Annual Memorial Service Helps Many
We held our annual Memorial Service on April 12. The Reverend Jim Martin began the service with prayers, poems, and praise. As I called off the names of loved ones, family members and friends lit a candle in their memory and shared fond memories. Reverend Martin, who has helped many through the grieving process, tells of the benefit of the service. Reverend Martin believes the ser-vice we have helps with the grieving process by allowing friends and family the opportunity to talk about their experiences. Following the service refreshments were served as guests mingled and shared with one another.
Throughout the year do-nations are made to the Mecosta County Com-mission on Aging and Senior Center in memory of their loved ones. These donations assist with supporting pro-gramming for Home De-livered Meals, Medical Transportation, In Home Services and Senior Cen-
ter activities. We are blessed to have so many think of us in their time of grief and this memorial ceremony gives family and friends a time to share and remember those who are near and dear to their hearts.
If you would like to make a donation to the Mecosta County Com-
mission on Aging and Senior Center please call us at 231-972-2884,
or stop by. We are located at 12954 80th Avenue just 2 ½ miles north
of Mecosta.

Celebrate Older Americans Month
In Home ServicesIn Home Services
Reinvent Yourself- Today, older Americans are living longer and more healthfully than ever before. What does this mean for our notions of life after a career? Many retirees are finding new inspiration in second careers, helping others, discovering new interests, and pursuing dreams. Reinventing yourself can be fun and rewarding. Even better: it is also good for your mental and physical well-being. Whether you are planning for retire-ment or simply looking to get involved in new activities, start by thinking about your skills, dreams, and passions.
By 2029, more than 20% of Americans will be of retirement age
FOLLOW YOUR PASSION, USE YOUR SKILLS Careers after retirement can be rewarding, personally and financially. First, determine whether you have the skills needed for a new venture. If so, update your resume and start looking at job posts. If not, seek out classes and training—online or at a local college. Remember to ask whether financial assistance is available.
Express yourself through the arts. Learn to paint or draw, dust off those dancing shoes, or put your musical talent to use. Take a class in stand-up comedy or acting, or finally write that story. Even if you never felt artistic, everyone has the ability to be creative. As a bonus, studies show that the arts can improve brain health.
Keep learning and growing! Learn a new language or take a computer class. Or, maybe you have always wanted to travel and discover other cultures. No matter what you choose,
pursuing a new interest will help keep you happy, healthy, and connected. Consider using your years of experience to serve others. Volunteers meet a range of community needs, from mentoring at-risk youth to providing job training to helping families recover from disasters. Find opportunities by visiting a local organization or charity or go to:
www.nationalservice.gov/serve or check with the Senior Center for volunteer opportunities.

NUTRITIONAL NEWS
Time for sowing those seeds and plants:
Not only are herbs low in salt, and calories, but they
add zest AND health benefits. Try these easy to grow
herbs in the following ways, or create your own…
BASIL Benefits: Anti-inflammatory, antibacterial
and magnesium. Uses: Great in pesto, on white
meats, combined with fruit, or added in stir-fries.
REMEMBER add it at the END.
DILL Benefits: Contains iron and calcium.
Uses: This aromatic herb is best with salmon, added
in stews, on a variety of vegetables (like cucumbers).
CILANTRO Benefits: It's a good source of fiber
and iron. Uses: Has a slightly citrusy taste. Its best in
salsa, guacamole, and combined with citrus.
CORIANDER SEEDS Benefits: Helps blood sugar
and cholesterol. Uses: Great added to soups, fish, and
smoked meats, like turkey.
ROSEMARY Benefits: Contains fiber, iron, and
calcium. Uses: Works well with roasted meats (like
chicken, pork, and salmon) or mixed into sauces.
SAGE Benefits: Contains antioxidants and helps
enhance the memory. Uses: Good with sweet fruits
and veggies, like apples and squash, it also adds a
punch to sausage and cheeses.
THYME Benefits: Contains vitamin K, and it pro-
tects cells. Uses: Add it to bean, egg, and veggie
dishes. For meat, try lamb. It blends well with parsley.
TURMERIC Benefits: Source of manganese, helps
arthritis pain. Uses: This colorful spice is most
commonly used in curries, but it adds flavor to stir-
fried veggies or rice.

CURIOSITY
A three year old accompanied his dad to see a litter of kittens.
On returning home, he rushed to his mother and breathlessly
informed her of what he had seen and also that in the litter
there were two boy kittens and two girl kittens. “Well how did
you know that?” his mother asked. The little fellow immedi-
ately responded and said, “Daddy picked them up and looked
underneath, I think it’s printed on their bottom!”

Spring has sprung...
That usually means garage sales, cleaning
closets, basements, nooks & crannies. What do you do with all the useful stuff
you just don’t want anymore?
Bring it to the Senior Center!
The drop off tent will be up after Memorial day so all you have to do is bring all your unwanted gently used items and drop them off in our tent!
Please no TV’s, encyclopedias or items that do not work!
