From the Principal
Dear Tornado Friends and Family,
My excitement for this new journey as principal of North Medford High School has
grown over the past two weeks. At every turn I see new possibilities emerging as I
meet our students, staff, and families. Students in classrooms, teachers teaching,
athletes competing, and seeing our student government in action is truly impressive.
Our foundation of tradition has made way for innovation, inclusion, and most
importantly, a strong sense Black Tornado Pride as we give our best in every way;
every day!
North Medford High School programs have long been recognized as being among the
very best in Oregon. Academic excellence for our students has been nurtured and
developed through rigorous programs such as AP courses in mathematics, English,
history, social studies, sciences, and fine arts. Our commitment to career and technical
courses such as engineering, robotics, business, manufacturing, automotive technology,
early childhood education, culinary arts, and many more courses, some of which
qualify for college credits, create a well-rounded experience for our students.
Innovation is helping us improve our graduation rates as we find better ways to help
struggling students meet requirements and demonstrate proficiency on demanding state
standards. An important indicator of our success is how well our students score on
these tests. The recent release of state scores show that North Medford High School
students achieved the highest scores of all schools in our district in math, reading, and
science. While these marks show improvement, we have more work to do to help our
students achieve mastery in all content areas.
I have begun to hear staff and students alike speak in terms of “we” instead of “me”
here at North Medford. It does my heart good to know that every student matters, and
each person counts – everyone is included. We are not individual tornados; it takes us
all to make the one. WE are the Black Tornado.
Our sense of pride is borne from effort. We trust that everyone is doing their best to
meet the challenge of success head-on. We welcome your support and hope that you
too will share in our sense of Black Tornado Pride.
Sincerely,
Daniel P. Smith

Student Attendance
541-842-3671
Regular and timely attendance has a very positive effect on learning. This is a benefit that helps students achieve their full potential. We believe school and home should work together to emphasize the importance of attending and actively participating in school.
If a student does not attend school regularly, parents/guardians may be contacted to take part in a conference where we will discuss the students attendance and what can be done to help them succeed in school. When we feel there is a need to help a student be more successful, we will do whatever it takes to help and encourage them.

Accreditation is a voluntary method of quality assurance developed more than 100 years ago by American universities and secondary schools and designed primarily to distinguish schools adhering to a set of educational standards. Today, the accreditation process is used at all levels of education and is recognized for its ability to effectively drive student performance and continuous improvement in education.
This year, North Medford High School will gather information both internally and externally in order reflect upon our strengths and challenges and refine our school improvement goals. Part of this process involves asking parents, students, and teachers to provide feedback.

Student Safety - House Bill 3197 Dear Parent/Guardian,
Student safety is Medford School District’s number one concern. We want to make sure that students are safe at school during school hours and on school days. The Oregon legislature enacted a law to help support schools in ensuring the safety of our students.
This law, House Bill 3197, requires every school to contact a parent/guardian any time there is an “unplanned absence.” An unplanned absence is when any student is absent and the school has not been notified. Any time this occurs, the school will call a parent/guardian to verify that the child is absent. If the school cannot contact a parent/guardian personally, a message will be left asking that you call back as soon as possible. If the school does not hear back from a parent/guardian by the end of the day, the district attendance specialist will be asked to help contact you.
Unfortunately, there have been instances across the country where a parent/guardian thought their child was safe at school only to find out they were not. This system will support communication between parents/guardians and schools when we don’t know why your child is not at school.
If you call or email the school in advance or on the morning when the student stays home, that is consider a “planned absence” and you will not be contacted. We ask that you work with us to make sure we know where your child is during school hours.
Here are some helpful tips:
1. Always notify the school when your child is absent or going to be absent for any reason. 2. Make sure the school has your most up to date phone number(s) and other contact
information, including emergency contacts. 3. If you would prefer an alternate person to be contacted regarding unplanned absences, make
sure the school has this information.
If we work together, we can ensure your child is safe during school hours and school days.

As you know, we take drug and alcohol use at North Medford High School very seriously. To assist in the ongoing pursuit of creating a safe and drug-free school setting, we are working with the Medford Police Department to bring trained narcotics dogs on campus. We will conduct searches quarterly.
Here are a few things we want all parents and students to know:
The police dogs are highly trained and use their sensitive noses to sniff out drugs.
When these dogs go on alert they sit down passively. The dogs will be used throughout our facility, including lockers, parking lots, and
surrounding areas.
The dogs will be accompanied by local law enforcement in the event any illegal substances are discovered.
As always, our greatest concern is the safety and well being of our students. It is our hope this will be a deterrent to illegal drugs at school and will encourage our students to make safe and healthy decisions.

CDC recommends a three-step approach to fighting the flu.
CDC recommends a three-step approach to fighting influenza (flu). The first and most important step
is to get a flu vaccination each year. But if you get the flu, there are prescription antiviral drugs that
can treat your illness. Early treatment is especially important for the elderly, the very young, people
with certain chronic health conditions, and pregnant women. Finally, everyday preventive actions
may slow the spread of germs that cause respiratory (nose, throat, and lungs) illnesses, like flu. This
flyer contains information about everyday preventive actions.
How does the flu Spread?
Flu viruses are thought to spread mainly from person to person through droplets made when people
with flu cough, sneeze, or talk. Flu viruses also may spread when people touch something with flu virus
on it and then touch their mouth, eyes, or nose. Many other viruses spread these ways too. People
infected with flu may be able to infect others beginning 1 day before symptoms develop and up to 5-7
days after becoming sick. That means you may be able to spread the flu to someone else before you
know you are sick as well as while you are sick. Young children, those who are severely ill, and those
who have severely weakened immune systems may be able to infect others for longer than 5-7 days.
What are everyday preventive actions?
Try to avoid close contact with sick people.
If you or your child gets sick with flu-like illness, CDC recommends that you (or your
child) stay home for at least 24 hours after the fever is gone except to get medical care or
for other necessities. The fever should be gone without the use of a fever-reducing
medicine.
While sick, limit contact with others as much as possible to keep from infecting them.
Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in
the trash after you use it.
Wash your hands often with soap and water. If soap and water are not available, use an
alcohol- based hand rub.
Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth. Germs spread this way.
Clean and disinfect surfaces and objects that may be contaminated with germs like the flu.
If an outbreak of flu or another illness occurs, follow public health advice. This may
include information about how to increase distance between people and other measures.
What additional steps can I take at work to help stop the spread of
germs that can cause respiratory illness, like flu?
Find out about your employer’s plans if an outbreak of flu or another illness occurs and
whether flu vaccinations are offered on-site.
Routinely clean frequently touched objects and surfaces, including doorknobs, keyboards,
and phones, to help remove germs.
Make sure your workplace has an adequate supply of tissues, soap, paper towels,
alcohol-based hand rubs, and disposable wipes.
Train others on how to do your job so they can cover for you in case you or a family
member gets sick and you have to stay home.

gets sick and you have to stay home.
If you begin to feel sick while at work, go home as soon as possible.
