EXPLORE ENTREPRENEURIAL TERRAINS, STUDENTS TOLD
General Services Officer of the US Consulate, Chennai, Mark
Jasonides, at an interaction in Pondicherry University on Tuesday.
PUDUCHERRY: Encouraging students to enter into entrepreneurship, General Services Officer of the U.S.
Consulate in Chennai, Mark Jasonides, said entrepreneurs shape the world by conceiving and executing new
ideas.
Interacting with students of Pondicherry University on Tuesday to mark International Education Week, Mr.
Jasonides said it was important for governments and the private sector to foster innovation for people who
are bold, passionate, different and not afraid of failure.
Good global education would give students a solid base to build their entrepreneurial ventures. Global travel
is important, as travelling to a foreign country would teach them lessons they could use for life, he said. Stu-
dents need all-round education, without concentrating only on the subject of their major.
In this way, they could be the architects of their own education and grow as a person.

„COLLABORATION IN HIGHER EDUCATION IS MAJOR PILLAR IN
U.S.-INDIA DIALOGUE'
BANGALORE: “More than a hundred thousand Indians are currently studying in the U.S., and an increasing
number of Americans are discovering India as a quality education destination. When it comes to education, the
dreams and desires of the U.S. and India are one and the same. Collaboration in higher education is a major
pillar in U.S.-India strategic dialogue,” Anand Krishna, Information Officer, U.S. Consulate General, Chennai,
has said.
Mr. Krishna was addressing students of St. Joseph‟s College here on Tuesday, while promoting International
Education Week.
The initiative, which was started in 2000 and observed in over 100 countries, is a joint initiative of the U.S.
Department of State and the U.S. Department of Education “to promote programs that prepare Americans for a
global environment and attract future leaders from India and other countries to study, learn, and exchange ex-
periences in the U.S.”
The theme of this year's education week is “International education: inspiring students locally to succeed glob-
ally”.
Awards, fellowships
As part of this, Mr. Krishna, speaking on „Research collaboration, study and work abroad, and entrepreneur-
ship‟, said: “Promoting research and scholarship has been a hallmark of the U.S.-India partnership. Our two
governments are partnering to offer Fulbright-Nehru Awards, higher education fellowships for the most out-
standing students, academics and professionals in India and the U.S.”
“President Barack Obama and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh launched the Obama-Singh initiative during
the latter's State Visit to the U.S. in November 2009. Under this $ 10 million program institutions can propose
innovative projects to advance scholarship and teaching, and promote reliable, long-term communication be-
tween partner institutions. Over the next decade we can expect to see many fruitful outcomes from these part-
nerships,” he added.

US OPENS ITS DOORS WIDER TO STUDENTS
Bangalore: Despite all the gloomy news filtering out of the US ever since the 2008 recession, the country re-
mains a favorite destination for students.
Anand Krishna, Information Officer, Public Affairs Section, U.S. Consulate in Chennai, reassured students in
Bangalore: “The U.S. Consulate in Chennai issues more temporary work visas than any other Consulate in the
world. Even when the U.S. was recovering from the recession, the number of work and student visas re-
mained high. Just because a man came to the U.S. from another country for a job doesn‟t mean there‟s one
less job for people in the U.S. It‟s only creating more job opportunities,” he said.
Anand spoke to students of St Joseph‟s College on the educational goals of India and the U.S. as part of the
International Education Week. As part of this program, 20 officers from the consulate are speaking to stu-
dents at 20 institutions across Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Kerala and Puducherry.
“When it comes to education, the dreams and desires of both countries are the same. Promoting research and
scholarships has been the hallmark of our relationship. Not all education takes place in a classroom. Travel-
ling is important,” he said.
During the interaction, Anand said students would always be welcome to the U.S. While students expressed
concern over visa issues at the Chennai consulate, he assured them that things are streamlined. “My advice is:
don‟t be nervous. Demonstrate that you have a reason to come back to India. We want as many as legitimate
visitors as possible. Some apply fraudulently and make things difficult for legitimate ones,” he said.
Anand advised students not to be carried away by agents but to rely on credible sources like United States In-
dia Educational Foundation (USIEF), an education USA center affiliated with the U.S. State Department, Bu-
reau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. You can contact its Frazer Town [satellite center] in Bangalore at

GETTING IT RIGHT
The U.S. consulate seems to be taking extra care to make sure it gets Indian names and pronunciation right.
Sarah J Talalay, Vice Consul, who recently delivered a speech at Stella Maris College encouraging stu-
dents to study in the U.S., had pronunciation keys in her printed speech.
She spoke of actor Rajinikanth releasing movies simultaneously in Chennai and New York. Next to Rajni-
kanth‟s name was the phonetic, „Rah-gee-knee-kahnth‟. She then moved onto to how U.S.-India relations
had progressed and talked of U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton watching a dance performance at
Kalakshetra. Beside the word Kalakshetra was „Cull-uhk-shea-thra‟.
After the Maureen Chao episode, clearly the U.S. Embassy does not wish to ruffle feathers over cultural
differences.

GO AROUND THE WORLD FOR SUCCESS, STUDENTS TOLD
Bangalore: Students should visit other countries for study or leisure or work as the experience helps broaden
their horizon and makes a lasting effect on their perception of world, said Anand Krishna, Information Officer
at the U.S. Consulate General, Chennai.
“Not all education takes place in a classroom. When you visit another country, your experiences have a lasting
effect on your worldview,” Krishna told the students at the St Joseph‟s College here on Tuesday. He was speak-
ing at a function to mark International Education Week.
The occasion is being observed this year with the theme “International Education: Inspiring Students Locally to
Succeed Globally.”
Over the course of the week, officers from the U.S. Consulate Chennai will speak at 20 different institutions
across South India.
Krishna, an American citizen, quoted the 19th century US author and humorist, Mark Twain, as saying: “Travel
is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness.”
“It‟s true that global experience has become a central component to success across many professional fields.
We are all world citizens and with that comes a responsibility to learn about other cultures not just through
reading, but through experience,” Krishna said.
Krishna advised the students to start thinking about ways to travel for school work or leisure as they approach
the end of their degree program. The education one gets from the experiences is invaluable, he added.
17,000 fellowships
India has the largest Fulbright-Nehru Scholar Exchange program worldwide, with more than 17,000 fellow-
ships and other grants awarded to Indians and Americans since its inception. Other ways of co-operation with
the US include higher education fellowships for the most outstanding students, academics and professionals in
India and the US to study, research and engage in work experiences of mutual benefit.
The U.S.-India Educational Foundation (USIEF) offers students and their parents comprehensive information
and counseling services on higher education in the U.S. It also supports multiple education fairs each year fea-
turing US colleges and universities, Krishna explained.
More than one lakh Indians currently study in the US and more than half a million travel to the U.S. each year.
Likewise, more than eight lakh Americans travel to India every year.
