All-star team vote opens as 50 nominees await fans’ supportWith only eight games remaining in this season, all handball fans can now have their say on the selection of the greatest stars of the VELUX EHF Champions League 2016/17 as the All-star team voting opens. For the first time the vote is presented by Salming, the competition’s official partner.

The past four editions of the vote generated a great interest and only in the last year over 80.000 handball fans took part. New opportunity to choose the star selection of the European top flight is here again. In its fifth year, the All-star team vote will again ask the fans to cast their online ballots for ten positions - the starting seven plus the best defender, the best coach and the best young player (born in 1994 or younger). There are five nominees in the selection for each position. Players and coaches from 20 clubs and from 17 nations in the current season have been selected. While six members of the 2015/16 All-star team can make it back to the elite company, there are no fewer than 25 new names (50 %) in the nomination list.

Fans who register before submitting their votes can win of 16 attractive prizes from the official partner Salming including the original award “The Spirit of Handball” created by the Swedish-American graffiti artist Shai Dahan. The artpiece will be handed over to the new All-star team members. The vote will be open until Tuesday 30 May 2017 (midnight) and for the first time also the media representatives and a panel of experts will contribute to the final selection. The combined choice of all three branches will be announced during the VELUX EHF FINAL4 event in Cologne on 3/4 June 2017.

Players have been nominated on the basis of their comprehensive performance throughout the season so far; not just their goal-getting prowess, but also their performance in defence, the number of blocks, assists and reaction in crucial moments during each match.

FC Barcelona Lassa (ESP) vs THW Kiel (GER)

• The overall balance between both sides in all competitions is fully equal since Kiel’s 28:26 win in the first leg - Barcelona and THW won 11 times each and drew twice.

• Both sides combined have eleven trophies in the EHF Champions League: Barcelona have eight, Kiel three. One player of each team has won the EHF Champions League each three times with their current club: Victor Tomas (Barcelona, 2005, 2011, 2015) and Christian Zeitz (Kiel, 2007, 2010, 2012). Besides, Viran Morros (Ciudad Real 2008, 2009, Barcelona 2015) is triple winner.

• Each side had eliminated the other as defending VELUX EHF Champions League champions in quarter-finals: Kiel lost in 2011; Barcelona in 2016. Barcelona also won the quarter-final against Kiel in the 2004/05 season.

• Kiel were part of the VELUX EHF FINAL4 six times (seventh tournament so far), Barcelona made it to Cologne five times. Since 2010, Kiel were finalists three times, winning the trophy twice. Barcelona were finalists four times, winning the trophy twice at Cologne.

• The duel is also the re-match of two EHF Champions League finals: In 2000, Barcelona took their fifth straight title, while Kiel struck back in 2010, at the premiere of the VELUX EHF FINAL4.

• Since the implementation of the current playing system, Barcelona have won 52 of 57 Champions League home matches. Kielce took one draw, Kiel, Löwen, Zagreb and Kielce took away victories in the last eight seasons.

• Since their debut in the EHF Champions League in the 1995/96 season, Barcelona have lost only one of 45 knock-out matches on home court: 26:22 against Celje in the 1996/97 semi-finals, but Barca had won the previous away match 29:24.

• Every time THW Kiel won the first leg in any knock-out match of the EHF Champions League, they always made it to the next stage - in total 21 times since the 1994/95 season. The only three times Kiel were defeated after winning a first leg were in their three Champions League Finals against Barcelona (2000) and Ciudad Real (2008, 2009).

• Barcelona just won their 118th straight match in Liga ASOBAL and they already took their 24th title. Coach Xavi Pascual and the players Jesper Noddesbo, Victor Tomas, Raul Entrerrios, Cedric Sorhaindo and Aitor Arino won their seventh straight ASOBAL trophy.

• After only scoring in total five times in his previous ten matches, Jicha netted four times in the first leg against Kiel last Sunday.

• Personnel: Domagoj Duvnjak is ruled out for six months after patella surgery, while Christian Zeitz is in question for Kiel; Barcelona can count on all of their players.

VELUX EHF FINAL4 Draw at the heart of Cologne

One month before the Opening Party of the VELUX EHF FINAL4 2017 in front of the LANXESS arena, the semi-final pairings will be determined on 2 May in Cologne.

After the draw took place in Palais Flora in 2015 and in The View in 2016 the event is moving to another location right at the heart of Cologne as the Steigenberger hotel will host the final draw of the 2016/17 club season. The heritage-protected building with its cozy atmosphere will be the right place for this event.

The Draw

Commencing at 12:00 hrs, Anett Sattler, one of the hosts of the VELUX EHF FINAL4 in the beginning of June, will present and guide through the draw. Besides the drawing of the lots, the new Salming merchandise will be presented. As a special guest Henriette Reker, mayor of Cologne, will attend the draw.

All four teams will be drawn from the same pot and the draw will be completely open, which means that two teams from the same country or from the same group of the group phase can play against each other in the semi-final.

Fans will have the possibility to follow the draw on different EHF channels. The event will be streamed live on ehfTV.com, on the youtube channel ehfTV as well as on the EHF Champions League Facebook page.

Playing times for the VELUX EHF FINAL4 have been already set and they stick the a tradition of the previous years as on both days the matches will be at 15:15 hrs and 18:00 hrs local time.

The European Handball Federation and EHF Marketing take great pleasure in inviting media representatives to the draw. If you wish to attend the event, please confirm your participation, stating your name and your media organisation to Vlado Brindzak ([email protected]) by Monday, 1 May 2017, 12:00 hrs at the latest.
