Time Inc.Time Inc. is based in New York and publishes over 90 magazines, such as Time, Sports Illustrated, Fortune, All You and Entertainment Weekly. It also has the rights to LIFE. Life was originally a humour magazine until Time bought the rights, turning it into a weekly news magazine focused on photojournalism. Time Inc. owns the magazine house Time Inc. UK, who publish What’s On TV, NME and Country Life. Time Inc. was established in 1922, was bought out by Time Warner in 1990, but spun off again in 2014.

Time Inc.Time Inc. has a wide variety of magazines to attract a wide audience. Sports Illustrated is aimed at men, while All You is aimed at women . Time magazine is not aimed at a gender, but is aimed at an adult audience, shown by the classic font used and red colour scheme. They also print Sports Illustrated Kids, which is aimed at children. This will attract a wide audience, increasing Time Inc.’s revenue stream.

NMENew Musical Express (NME) is the main music magazine of Time Inc. It is aimed at teens, and is based in London. Magazine sales have being declining, so a Twitter account has being created, making the magazine multi-platform and more accessible to its target audience. NME also has a website, which contains music news, music reviews and a showcase of new music.

NME has a mainly red colour scheme and a simplistic logo, which will attract teens as it doesn’t seem to serious or too young. Unlike Bauer Media, they only have one media magazine, which could decrease profits.

Bauer Media group

Bauer Media is a media conglomerate based in Hamburg, manages over 600 magazines, 400 digital products and 50 radio and TV stations and extends into 17 countries. The UK magazine has been managed by 5 generations of the Bauer family. Bauer has a 50% stake in Box Television, with the other half owned by Channel 4. The large amount of media platforms owned by Bauer will result in a larger revenue.

Bauer own Empire magazine, a free film magazine at Empire Cinemas, Closer, aimed at women, Grazia, Yours, aimed at women over 50, and Motorcycle News. This provides a wide range of demographics, increasing revenue streams.

Bauer Media groupBauer Medias’ two main music magazines are Q and Kerrang!. They are both aimed at music fans, but Q is aimed at fans of indie, rock and alternative music, while Kerrang! Is a popular rock/metal magazine.

Both Q and Kerrang! Have their own websites, which, like NME, will help them appeal to their target audience by making them multi platform. Unlike NME, there are two magazines for two different styles of music. This could increase revenue. Kerrang! Has a shattered and broken logo to show the rebellious nature o rock music, while Q has a simplistic logo to fit with the different music styles.

Future PLCFuture PLC are a magazine company based in Bath, Somerset. They specialise in tech magazines, such as the Playstation magazine and ImagineFX as well as PC Gamer. Therefore their target market is current but niche, so they not make as much revenue as Bauer or Time Inc. It was sold to Pearson PLC in 2007.

It also has various websites, such as GamesRadar, Gizmodo, TechRadar, and MusicRadar. This makes it multiplatform, increasing revenue streams.

Future PLCFuture PLC own Computer Music, a music magazine dedicated to electronic, computer generated music. It is the best selling, but it is not a crowded field as it is niche market.

Computer Music

The magazine has its’ own website, like NME, Q and Kerrang!, and contains tutorials and demos. The magazine used to come with a CD-Rom, but it is now featured on the website.

Unlike the other conglomerates, it does not contain rock music, which will give it a brand identity, but could decrease revenue stream.

My ChoiceMy choice for the publishing house to publish my magazine would be Time Inc. as they only have one music magazine, NME, which is now free. By introducing a new magazine, they will increase revenue streams. There are many rock, pop and indie music magazines, but very few electronic music magazines, so introducing one would appeal to a different market, and expand the brand identity. If Time Inc. published it, they would be able to compete with Future PLC. Time Inc. is also a well established brand, so it will help my magazine be successful.
