The heartbeat of the Midlands, it is, along with London, the most ethnically diverse city in the country with around 30 per cent of the population non-white.

That diversity is reflected in the cultural and culinary identity of the city, which includes its famous Balti Triangle and popular Indian restaurants. According to the Birmingham Mail, the city’s Sikh celebrations of Vaisakhi are the largest in Europe and the Eid celebrations to mark the end of Ramadan are believed to the biggest in the United Kingdom. Birmingham’s St Patrick’s Day parade is the third biggest in the world after Dublin and New York and the city also welcomes the UK’s largest two day LGBT+ party, Birmingham Pride.

In the mid-18th century, the Lunar Society brought together scientists, philosophers and other thinkers and by 1791, Birmingham was declared “the world’s first manufacturing town” by economist Arthur Young.

Notably, the steam engine was developed in Birmingham by Matthew Boulton and James Watt. William Murdoch, who worked for them, invented gas lighting.

Its central – as opposed to coastal – location required means of transport and the first canal was built in 1769 to connect Birmingham with the coal mines at Wednesbury and the Black Country (the area west of Birmingham that includes Wolverhampton). The canal network expanded rapidly over the coming decades.

In the 20th century, Birmingham became the centre of Britain’s car manufacturing industry. The Mini was first produced at 1959 at Longbridge, south-west of the city centre. In the 1960s, the Longbridge plant employed 25,000 workers though production finally ceased in 2016. Some of the major international businesses which now call the city home include Jaguar Land Rover and HSBC.

Birmingham’s industrial heritage can be seen in the city’s Jewellery Quarter and the Cadbury chocolate manufacturing plant.

In 1976, the National Exhibition Centre was built on the eastern outskirts of the city by Birmingham Airport. It is the largest exhibition space in the United Kingdom and comprises 20 halls and an arena that is a prime concert venue.

By 1791 Birmingham was declared the world’s first manufacturing town.

Birmingham has undergone major renovations

that have revitalised, among other places, the famous Bullring

shopping area.

Birmingham has undergone major renovations in recent times that have revitalised, among other places, the famous Bullring shopping area, where there had been a market for 800 years, and New Street Station. The two landmarks combine to form one sparkling new destination, Grand Central.

In sports, as well as possessing one of England’s most atmospheric international cricket venues, Birmingham has two major football clubs, Birmingham City and Aston Villa, who both played in the second tier of the English game in the 2018-19 season. There are other football clubs close to the city, including Wolverhampton Wanderers (aka Wolves) of the Premier League, and West Bromwich Albion. Lawn tennis was invented and first played in Birmingham, while to the north of the city The Belfry’s Brabazon course has hosted more Ryder Cup tournaments than anywhere else in the world.

The city hosted the World Indoor Athletics Championships in 2018 and is hosting the Gymnastics World Cup in 2019 and the Commonwealth Games in 2022.

Birmingham is the only UK city outside London, which can boast its own Symphony Orchestra, Royal Ballet and Opera Company. Each organisation stage many events throughout the year at major world-class venues including Birmingham Hippodrome and Town Hall Symphony Hall.

Places of worship, such as churches, gurdwaras, mosques, synagogues and temples can be found in many areas of the city. For more information, please contact your hotel reception.

What are your favourite places to eat and drink in and around Birmingham?I lived around Brindley Place, just off Broad Street by the canal, for about eight years. There’s a restaurant called The Bank (www.individualrestaurants.com) which was our favourite when we lived there. Cathedral Square has a number of restaurants, including The Ivy Temple Row (www.theivybirmingham.com) and Gaucho (www.gauchorestaurants.com). Moseley is quite quirky and Harborne with The Plough is nice too.

And what about shopping? The city is developing all the time and the Mailbox is a great place. Digbeth is a really cool area, just off the beaten track.

What do you like about Edgbaston? The city’s central location makes Edgbaston a great ground to visit and I think the ground provides the best atmosphere in the country. I think all teams will get great support at Edgbaston during the tournament. Spectators now have the Skyline Terrace in the new stand, which is fantastic and there are loads of different excellent places to watch cricket from. From a player’s point of view, when the Hollies Stand gets going, the noise is like nothing else in the country. The facilities are as good as anywhere in the world now – dressing rooms, viewing areas, the nets, the gym.

And what are your most memorable playing experiences there?Any time we beat Australia was pretty special! The 2005 Ashes game was one of the best Tests at all time. In 2013, we beat Australia in the ICC Champions Trophy and that was one of my favourite ODIs.

Who’s your favourite Warwickshire cricket personality?I was very lucky to grow up watching the great teams of the 1990s which didn’t have many stand-out stars – except the overseas brilliance of Brian Lara and Allan Donald – but were just really good all-round teams.

EDGBASTONEdgbaston hosted arguably the greatest ICC Cricket World Cup match of all time, indeed one of the greatest of all ODIs.

The semi-final between Australia and South Africa in 1999 ended in an extraordinary tie after a mix-up between Lance Klusener and Allan Donald led to a run-out. The result sent Australia through to the final (and ultimately the trophy) and South Africa crashing out because the Aussies had finished above them in the Super Six, albeit on net run-rate. Steve Elworthy, ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 Managing Director, was part of the South Africa side that day.

The ground, which hosted its first Test match in 1902, has also witnessed two of the finest Ashes Test matches to date.

In 1981, with Australia cruising to victory, Ian Botham took five wickets for one run in 28 balls, to grab a win for England and set them on course for an improbable series victory.

In 2005, England beat Australia by only two runs in a Test match for the ages. Without that victory, which levelled the series, England would not have been able to complete their historic series win, their first over Australia for almost 20 years.

Edgbaston has developed into a favourite ground for the England team. Roared on by the often vociferous crowd – especially from the Hollies Stand named after the leg-spin bowler Eric Hollies who dismissed Don Bradman for a duck in his final innings in 1948 – England have an impressive record here.

The last Test they lost was to South Africa in 2008 when Graeme Smith scored the highest of his record four centuries in successful fourth-innings chases. His 154 not out gave South Africa a five-wicket win and an unassailable 2-0 series lead, a score-line that led to the resignation of England captain Michael Vaughan.

Edgbaston is also a stadium of innovation. From 1981 until 2000, the ground used a vast pitch cover known as the Brumbrella that covered almost the entire playing area.

The tied semi-final in 1999 between

Australia and South Africa is one of the greatest

of all ODIs.

The home of Warwickshire CCC, Edgbaston was where,

in 1994, Windies legend Brian Lara made 501 not out,

a record first-class score.

It hosted the first senior domestic day/night match in England, between Warwickshire and Somerset in 1997. And, in 2017, England played the Windies in the first day/night Test match in the United Kingdom. In 2018, the first Test of the series between England and India was the 1,000th England men’s Test match to be played.

The ground hosted the final of the ICC Champions Trophy in 2013, and also the group-stage fixtures between traditional rivals India and Pakistan in that edition as well as in 2017.

It has become the home of the English domestic T20 competition finals day and back in 1973, in the only women’s ODI the ground has so far hosted, England beat Australia to win the inaugural Women’s World Cup.

The home ground of Warwickshire CCC and its T20 incarnation, Birmingham Bears, Edgbaston was the venue where, in 1994, Windies legend Brian Lara made 501 not out, a record first-class score.

In 2011, a new South Stand was built that provides outstanding facilities for spectators, players and media. The ground’s spectator capacity of 24,500 makes it the third largest venue in England and Wales after Lord’s and The Oval.

Warwickshire’s brief but total dominance of county cricket in the mid-1990s was remarkable and unparallelled before or since.

WARWICKSHIRE COUNTY CRICKET CLUB

The last of these was another record, his mammoth 501 not out against Durham beat the global first-class record of 499 set by Pakistan’s Hanif Mohammad in 1958-59.

The following season, with South Africa paceman Allan Donald back as overseas player, they won 14 of 17 matches to retain the title. They also won a one-day trophy and finished second in the one-day league on run-rate.

The 1995 trophy was the fifth of their seven Championship titles, the first of which came in 1911 under the captaincy of 22-year-old, Birmingham-born Frank Foster.

Later that year, Foster, a left-arm seamer, played for England for the first time and took 32 wickets in a 4-1 series win in Australia, forming an impressive partnership with the great SF Barnes, who took 34.

In 1914, against Midlands rivals Worcestershire, Foster scored 305 not out in a day, which remained the county’s highest individual score until Lara’s 501 in 1994.

Eight of their 20 major trophies were won between 1989 and 1997, and, in 1994, they won three of the four trophies on offer. If they had won the toss – and thus, batted second – in the September one-day final against Worcestershire, they might well have claimed a clean sweep.

They found an irresistible combination in the cerebral and cajoling coaching of Bob Woolmer and the maverick captaincy of Dermot Reeve, the Hong Kong-born England all-rounder.

The summer of 1994 belonged to one man: Brian Charles Lara. He joined Warwickshire as an overseas player only following the withdrawal through injury of India all-rounder Manoj Prabhakar.

Lara’s first innings for the county came 11 days after his world-record Test score of 375 in Antigua for the Windies against England. His stellar form continued: kicking off with 147 against Glamorgan, he scored six County Championship hundreds in seven innings.

The coaching of Bob Woolmer and captaincy of

Warwickshire would wait 40 years for a second title and they made history in 1951 by becoming the first County Championship winners to have a side that was made up entirely of professional players (as opposed to amateurs).

Their leading wicket-taker was leg-spinner Eric Hollies, the man who bowled Don Bradman for a duck in his final Test innings in 1948. Hollies took 145 wickets at 17.69 in 1951, and 2,201 at 20.45 for Warwickshire – a county record – in a career that spanned 25 years, interrupted by World War II.

Success for Warwickshire was intermittent until the 1990s. They won the title in 1972 after an unbeaten season in which the great Windies batsman Rohan Kanhai scored 1,437 runs. His fellow Guyanese Alvin Kallicharan also chipped in with just under 1,000 while there were also significant contributions from great Warwickshire men, opener Dennis Amiss, the county’s leading all-time run-scorer, and MJK Smith, who led the side for ten years from 1957-67.

Kallicharan twice scored more than 2,000 runs in a season for Warwickshire, in 1982 and 1984, but the ‘80s were mostly a forgettable decade for the county.

The post-millennium years have been notable for Championship titles in 2004 and 2012 and the emergence of two batsmen, Ian Bell and Jonathan Trott, who were key players in the England Test side that reached No.1 in the world in 2011.

Bell is Warwickshire through and through, the South African-born Trott an adopted Brummie whose wife Abi is the granddaughter of Tom Dollery, a fine Warwickshire batsman. More recently, another local hero Chris Woakes, like Bell a passionate follower of Aston Villa FC, has represented the county with distinction at international level.

In 2014, Woakes delivered the nerveless final over that sealed victory in the T20 Blast competition. It was the first season in which Warwickshire played T20 cricket in their rebranded guise of Birmingham Bears.

Another member of that team was New Zealand spinner Jeetan Patel, who has taken more than 600 wickets across all formats in his nine seasons with the county. And, in 2018, he captained the Bears to promotion back to Division One of the County Championship.

Local hero and Aston Villa fan Chris Woakes

Media accreditationThe media accreditation process for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 ran in two stages.

The first stage (from 8 November 2018 to 14 February 2019) allowed for the written press, photographers and non-rights holding TV and radio broadcasters to apply online for the tournament media accreditation.

The second stage (from 1 to 28 February 2019) allows for the successful media to make requests to attend round-robin matches, as tournament accreditation alone does not provide access to venues on match days.

Requests for the semi-finals and final will be taken once the round-robin matches are complete. Priority will be given to media whose teams will feature in these matches.

To read more about the Media Terms and Conditions, and FAQs on media accreditation, please visit www.cricketworldcup.com/about

Pass collectionMedia can collect their tournament accreditation passes from the accreditation centres located at each match venue.

Birmingham is the home of the ‘balti’, the ubiquitous curry whose name is believed to derive from the Urdu word for bucket and refers to the type of dish in which it is served. The balti emerged in the 1970s and the area to the south of the city around Sparkhill (where England all-rounder Moeen Ali grew up) and Moseley is known as the Balti Triangle. Moseley, along with Edgbaston, is also the area for good pubs and craft beer. Digbeth, less than 10 minutes’ walk east of the Bullring, is one of the most fashionable and characterful areas of the city full of independent shops, bars and restaurants. Chinatown is adjacent to the Bullring.
