Type of video: Narrative/ConceptualPurpose: Communicate meaning of lyrics to the viewer, create emotion for the viewer, to tell a story Inspirational: Special FX used, type of shots, storyline of videoReflection: Contains shots that reflect on lyrics, however there’s elements of a narrative in the video, these can create certain emotions
Throne– Bring Me The HorizonAlternative Metal, Metalcore, Deathcore
• Type of video: Conceptual/Performance• Purpose: To show performance, shots may deliver certain messages to
people, has an unsettling effect due to some shots in the video• Inspirational: Simple settings as they have a huge impact on the shots• Reflection: Band perform the song, shots cut to other settings and other
people, dark and light backgrounds (black and white)
Rap God – EminemRap
• Conceptual/Narrative/Performance• Purpose: Be modern, connect to the audience, type of clothing, settings
etc• Inspirational: The fact that Eminem is so famous and well-known and the
video is simple yet there’s a lot of unusual settings and special effects used• Reflection: Elements of performance (solo), in streets with other people
and a technology based narrative

• Type of Video: Conceptual• Purpose: Communicate meaning and emotion to the viewer• Inspirational: How unique the video is• Reflection: Symbolic to the lyrical content, creates an emotional reflection
for the viewer
Grenade – Bruno MarsPop, Rock, Reggae, Soul, R&B, Funk
• Type of Video: Narrative/Conceptual• Purpose: Tells a story of lust, love, feelings, emotions etc to the viewer and
makes the viewer feel sorry for the main character (Bruno Mars)• Inspirational: Props and settings used along with storyline in video• Reflection: Video tells story which relates to lyrics, conceptual, it creates
emotion/feeling to audience
Moving On – Asking AlexandriaMetalcore, Heavy Metal
• Type of Video: Performance/Narrative• Purpose: Tell a story of the band on tour, how they feel, what they do,
shows them performing and how the act and how enthusiastic they are towards the audience when they are on stage
• Inspirational: How the band opens up to the audience about their true feelings
• Reflection: Performance in a few venues and concerts, band members express emotions on signs to the camera and tour journey is shown in time lapse
Stronger - Kanye WestHip Hop
• Type of Video: Performance/Narrative• Purpose: Video is based off of other artists/films, combines these
together, tells a story to the audience• Inspirational: Filters used, effects used, clothing of the woman• Reflection: Kanye West is singing on a street, woman walks in Japanese
streets lit up with signs and lights

• Type of Video: Narrative• Purpose: Contains action, makes the video exciting, tells a story (fictional)
however based upon real events• Inspirational: How they use historical settings and events• Reflection: Nothing to do with lyrics, however the song title reflects on
time period, shows Roman setting in a coliseum

• Type of Video: Performance/Narrative/Conceptual• Purpose: Shows performance by Katy Perry, to create emotion and
communicate these emotions to the viewer • Inspirational: Costume that Katy Perry is wearing, setting used• Reflection: Katy Perry is singing and she also has fireworks coming out of
her chest which reflects upon the lyrics

• Type of Video: Narrative/Performance• Purpose: Tells a story which takes a twist which is reflected upon in the
lyrics before the twist takes place• Inspirational: Costumes and unusual settings and people used in the
video, how popular the band is• Reflection: Video reflects upon lyrics (about bride), elements of singer
singing/performing in the video within the narrative
Car Radio – Twenty One PilotsAlternative Hip Hop, Electropop, Indie Pop
• Type of Video: Performance/Conceptual• Purpose: Create emotions for the viewer, mainly negative emotions, which
are communicated to the viewer by the images seen in the video and the lyrical content which have a huge connection
• Inspirational: Performance on stage, how they get the audience to join in• Reflection: Conceptual footage leads into performance at a large venue
with a large admiring crowd then leads back to conceptual setting
Bangarang – SkrillexDubstep, EDM, Electro-house, Post-Hardcore• Type Of Video: Narrative• Purpose: To seem comical to the viewer, storyline in the video is not
serious and is not very realistic• Inspirational: How comical and unusual the video is• Reflection: Kids are causing trouble an ice cream man and they steal his
ice cream using small bombs

Indie Rock, Psychedelic Rock, Post-Punk Revival• Type of Video: Narrative• Purpose: To give a message to the viewer (drug related), make the viewer
feel sorry the man as he’s being ignored• Inspirational: The message the song gives along with the video• Reflection: Person is high and/or drunk and is trying to get hold of
someone who is not replying to his messages. Goes to the wrong house and she ignores his texts
Happy Little Pill – Troye SivanDream Pop, Indie Pop, Synthpop, Electronic, EDM, Electropop
• Type Of Video: Performance/Conceptual• Purpose: Entertainment, shots in the video do not tell a clear story or give
any particular messages to the viewer, mainly for performance purposes• Inspirational: Simple shots and performance scenes• Reflection: Troye is singing in many shots, there are other shots with
different objects and scenes which could reflect upon the lyrical content and create meaning to the viewer
Smoke Break – Carrie UnderwoodCountry, Country Pop
• Type Of Video: Performance/Narrative• Purpose: Tells a story, performance is shown throughout the video as well• Inspirational: Bright setting, use of props (car)• Reflection: She’s singing whilst driving a car which breaks down so she has
to continue on foot, some narrative in the video
Ghosts N Stuff- Deadmau5Progressive House, Electro House, Electronica• Type Of Video: Narrative• Purpose: There is a story but it is mainly for entertainment purposes as it
is not taken very seriously• Inspirational: Simple, low budget look of costume instead of special effetcs• Reflection: Guy dressed as ghost walks around different places; hospital,
town centre, he is also skating on a skateboard
Speed of Light – Iron MaidenProgressive Rock/Hard Rock
• Type of Video: Narrative/Conceptual• Purpose: Entertainment, comical if you are a fan of the band as there are
references throughout the video• Inspirational: How unique the video is (video games)• Reflection: Video shows creature playing/going through video games
which reflects the eras and evolution of video games, collecting hearts, all animation, shows time span of band’s legacy through different games
Super Bass – Nicki MinajHip Hop, R&B, Pop
• Type Of Video: Performance• Purpose: Show off fashion/looks, connect to the audience as it is modern• Inspirational: Costumes used, styles of Nicki Minaj• Reflection: Performance of her singing in bizarre settings with large
muscular men, no real story line to the video
Umbrella – RihannaR&B, Pop, Reggae, Hip Hop, Dance-Pop
• Type Of Video: Performance, Conceptual• Purpose: Entertainment mainly, performance and shots which appear to
be entertaining and non-realistic• Inspirational: Special effects used, popularity of the artist• Reflection: Rihanna has an umbrella, links to title and words of the song,
she protects herself from incoming water onscreen
Little Monster – Royal BloodHard/Blues/Garage Rock
• Type Of Video: Performance• Purpose: Show performance of the band, and how the people are
enjoying their music and show• Inspirational: Simplicity of the video, how easy it is to film• Reflection: Black and white, shows band performing to a small audience in
a small setting, studio?
Ain’t It Fun – ParamorePop Rock/Pop Punk/Pop
• Type of Video: Narrative• Purpose: The video is unique, it shows how the band set out to break as
many world records as they could in one music video• Inspirational: How unique and different the video is• Reflection: The band break world records in the video. This makes it
unique as no other music video does this
Immaculate Misconception - Motionless In WhiteMetal/Heavy Metal
• Type of Video: Narrative/Conceptual/Performance• Purpose: Shows the band performing to an audience, however there is a
dark story alongside this, with some symbolic shots (someone on a crucifix)
• Inspirational: Stage costume/make-up, 3 different things going on at once in the video
• Reflection: Images reflect lyrics, there’s a narrative of how the band is hated and shows band performing, cuts between all these scenes
Earth Song – Michael JacksonPop
• Type of Video: Performance/Narrative/Conceptual• Purpose: Main purpose is to give a message to the audience/viewer on
how the world is coping and how we are causing so many problems on the planet
• Inspirational: How powerful of a message it communicates to the audience
• Reflection: Video tells story which also links to lyrics to communicate emotions to the viewer touched upon in the song
Bohemian Rhapsody – QueenRock
• Type Of Video: Performance• Purpose: Mainly entertainment purposes for fans/audience• Inspirational: How popular the video is and how simple it is at the same
time• Reflection: The members are in formation at the start, then kicks into
performing onstage, switches back and forth from shots of performance and formation scenes
One – MetallicaHeavy/Thrash Metal
• Type Of Video: Performance/Narrative • Purpose: Advertise a film and the band as well as there are performance
scenes alongside scenes from the film• Inspirational: Huge link between lyrics and video/film• Reflection: Switches between movie and performance scenes/shots.
Sometimes they overlap, lyrics relate to movie as the guy in the movie loses body parts, and this is reflected in the lyrics
Burn – Ellie GouldingIndie Pop, Synthpop, Folktronica
• Type Of Video: Performance, Narrative elements• Purpose: Tell a story which links to the lyrics (fire, burn, light etc),
entertainment for the audience• Inspirational: Props used (flares, lights, flames)• Reflection: Ellie is walking along singing while people arrive at a gathering
where there are lights and sparklers which reflect fire and burning and lights like in the lyrics
Na Na Na – My Chemical RomancePop Punk, Alternative Rock, Post-Hardcore
• Type Of Video: Narrative (small performance)• Purpose: To seem comical, entertaining to the audience as the video is
unrealistic due to weapons and costume• Inspirational: How comical the video is• Reflection: Rivalry between 2 gangs after a girl is kidnapped set in the
future, seen by the laser guns, odd video therefore can be unique
Adam’s Song – Blink 182Pop/Skate Punk, Punk/Alternative Rock
• Type Of Video: Performance, Narrative• Purpose: To tell a story of a specific person, create emotion and feelings
for the viewer• Inspirational: What they based the song and video on• Reflection: They perform in a studio filled with pictures, scenes of pictures
are shown by zooms and transitions, shows people’s lives, whether it’s the band or other people. Lyrics are about a fan who wrote to band and took his own life shortly after, so lyrics reflect upon his story

• Type Of Video: Narrative, Performance• Purpose: Symbolic meanings, messages, performance scenes entertain the
audience• Inspirational: What happens in the video, setting of the video• Reflection: Elements of singer singing, in a house, lights shining bright in
the house, strange happenings in the house
Dancing Queen – ABBAPop, Pop Rock, Disco
• Type Of Video: Performance• Purpose: To get people dancing, singers are dancing in the video and the
genre of the song at the time would have been popular at discos and parties
• Inspirational: How catchy the song is and how the video tells the audience what to do (dance)
• Reflection: The band perform the song, vocals and instruments are all shown, they are just having a good time performing the song
