• Honesty is paramount – even if it means bad news.

• Remember that knowing what is happening is sometimes more important than our gut reactions to it.

• Parenting is sometimes like poker. Kids will troll for your reactions by divulging pieces of a scenario to get your reaction. Keep your poker face on.

• Your household is not a democracy.– You are the parent and must be one– It is easier to build a skyscraper from the bottom up –

start young– This means clear media boundaries, with a foundation

laid early that you get to know everything they do and say online and via text message

– Trust is earned, and privileges can be given and taken away based on rules of a household being followed

Protecting Kids OnlineProtecting Kids Online• Remember that the computer is not a TV, it can be used as a means to access an entire virtual world.

• Passwords on the computer accompanied by household rules become the locks and clear boundaries for acceptable use of the computer.

• Setting clear rules and empowering kids to “help” set the rules (depending upon their age) encourages communication about this area.

• Decide if you want to limit access to certain Internet content and activities.

• Then decide if you want a keykey for access to theirtheir car on the information superhighway.

Protecting Kids OnlineProtecting Kids Online• Set the rules from the start and post them. Consider signing them along with your kids.

• Make sure that they know that they can come to you.

• Rule #1: If they are in a dangerous situation, they can call you if you promise not to overreact

• Computers with Internet access are in open areas of the house…not in bedrooms.

• You are an administrator, your child is not.

•Wireless internet?

•Make it secure

•Consider using a fixed terminal with monitoring software installed

• Change your password regularly and make it hard.

• Regularly explore your computer and Internet browser and review what has been viewed.

• Set rules about locking the taskbar, deleting browser history, access settings and so on.

• Learn the Alt + Tab trick so you can hide the Solitaire game from your boss.

• Recycle Bin = deleted files

• Browser History File = websites visited

• Computer rules should include that you are the only person who can delete items from any of these areas

• Computer rules include mass media storage and storage devices

• These include I-Pods, RAM Memory sticks, memory cards and so on

• facebook likes their privacy settings to be a pain in the ass, although they are simpler than they used to be

• Check them often

• Only one profile per person

• You must have unrestricted access to your child’s profile, therefore you are their “friend” whether they like it or not
