MEDIATION

James Baker voiced a concept that mediation – control – of a media piece works in three ways. Those are selection, organisation, and focusing. All point towards the representation within media – in the editing process, we select particular shots so that they convey a particular idea. We plan and edit shots into certain positions so that we get the point across, or if we have a narrative, we want to show it in a way that expresses our concept. And then we must consider if our ideas have made their way across to the audience and if our mediation has been successful.

This theory elicits that I look at my rough cuts and shots in general to see if I’m getting across my ideas and concepts. I don’t have a particular narrative. My main theme is independence, a wild youth idea in which my actor will be seen alone and fine with that situation. I also wanted to relate my shots to the lyrics of the song in location and weather conditions to show my perception of the lyrics. Dream pop transmits ideas of space and psychedelia to me; I am aiming to portray these ideas in my own production.

I planned my shots with my concepts in mind: the studio footage shows only my actor to express the idea of independence and youth freedom. The projection in this footage is all linked to the lyrics and overall sound of the song: hurricane footage links directly to the song title. This allows me to represent the metaphorical idea of the girl.

The organisation of each individual shot will be carefully chosen in a way to show my particular concept. I’ve chosen to have three different locations in my music video and though I don’t have a continuous narrative, the scenes will be organised in a way that makes sense and looks good. The focus will be on the actor as if she’s telling us about her life. The party scene too will link to this.
