Forty years of Triple JJ

anuary 2015 marks 40 years since the launch of what was then Double J. In the time that’s followed, the station

has undergone a major rebrand and a national expansion. “In the beginning, Double J was just in Sydney. The original plan was to have a national network, but it took another 15 years or so before that could roll out. Triple J rolled out across Perth, Melbourne, Brisbane and Adelaide, then to the major regional centres but it wasn’t until around the mid-1990s that Triple J finally reached a lot more of those regional and rural parts of Australia. That’s definitely been a big thing for us, to represent the national culture around Triple J and Australian music,” station manager Chris Scaddan told Mediaweek.

“The network’s digital side has definitely been the biggest change of the past 10 or so years. For many

Forty years of Triple Jyears, FM transmissions were the only way. In the early 1990s, Triple J was one of the very first radio networks in Australia to have a website.

“More recently, that’s evolved into digital radio broadcasting and web content, video content and digital radio. We launched Triple J Unearthed [in 2011] and we’ve launched Double J, a rebrand of Dig Music. It’s really gone full circle – Double J started in 1975, and became Triple J. Now Triple J has relaunched Double J, thanks to the technology that’s made that possible,” he added.

The national youth broadcaster went all out to celebrate the milestone. “The anniversary itself was January 19, at 11am to be precise. That was the time of Triple J’s first broadcast, all those years ago in 1975. We did

quite a bit on-air at both Triple J and our digital sister station, Double J. Double J had a whole lot of Triple J programmers and on-air talent from over the years to come in and reminisce about the different eras of the station.”

The radio station also held a concert in Sydney’s The Domain with high-profile acts including You Am I, Daniel Johns, Megan Washington, Gotye and Midnight Oil singer turned politican Peter Garrett with over 25,000 fans in attendance. Additionally, the ABC took a deeper look at the impact of Triple J on Australia in a one-hour documentary that screened the same night. “It shows how Triple J both influenced and reflected the youth culture of Australia for the past 40 years,” explained Scaddan.

Charlie, Andrew and Shaynna are back on our screens visiting properties in New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia, Queensland and Western Australia. The top-rating, ASTRA-award-winning series was viewed by 274,000 people, with the spinoff format Inside Selling Houses Australia also making the top 20 shows of 2014 with 168,000 viewers. Jay Walkerden has been appointed to the role of general manager at Nova 106.9 in Brisbane. He has been in the role as acting general manager since July 2014, and will continue to act as program director as well as GM.

Seven has appointed David Porter as the network’s director of TV operations. He will report to CEO Tim Worner in the newly created role, which is a promotion from his previous role as general manager, news and public affairs operations.

iSubscribe’s director of content and client solutions Paula Vinogradov is leaving the company after 14 years.

Shelly Horton is joining Mia Freedman’s Mamamia Women’s Network as a host and producer of the soon-to-launch Mamamia TV. She will also continue her regular media appearances on behalf of the network.

Following three years at the public broadcaster, television director Tony Iffland will leave SBS. Under his leadership, the network has launched NITV

and relaunched SBS2. After Iffland leaves at the end of the month, SBS will undergo an organisational restructure resulting in chief digital officer Marshall Heald taking on the newly created role of director, television and online content.

their own perceived (and widely-reported) demise over the past few years. “I don’t think we’ve been particularly good at selling ourselves in the newspaper industry. Maybe that’s because we’ve come from a long dominant period, but now we have more competition for people’s time. We got a little bit complacent,” he said.

“What we’re doing at The Courier-Mail is really engaging with our readers, and hearing what they want to read about. Early on in 2014, we realised that we weren’t doing enough of a good job of promoting ourselves and we’ve taken steps to change that. Whenever you hear a television ratings story, especially one from a network, they are always talking about which shows they have beaten. We’ve realised The Courier-Mail reaches a similar audience to some of those big shows [when compared to Queensland audiences]. The networks didn’t like it at first, but it’s to reinforce that we really have a huge reach.”

As well as reiterating its considerable reach, The Courier-Mail also made a number of changes in 2014 to better establish itself for the future, including a major digital revamp. “The Courier-Mail is principally a newspaper. As we develop, we’ve building our

online brands – for instance, www.couriermail.com.au is a growing digital space, it’s really increased its audience over the past 12 months.”

Dore also spoke of a change in editorial direction that guided The Courier-Mail for the end of 2014, and will continue to in 2015. “We’ve been making the print edition more engaging throughout the past months. Sometimes there’s a bit of a joke on the front, like our Jacqui Lambie cover.

Following a hugely successful 2014, editor Chris Dore and Brisbane daily The Courier-Mail

are certainly starting 2015 off on the right foot. The News Corp paper was celebrated throughout 2014, scoring two major awards. The Courier-Mail was awarded the 2014 PANPA for metro daily Newspaper of the Year, taking the crown from 2013 winner The Age. The paper also received the internal Newspaper of the Year award from News Corp, in recognition of its innovation in digital story-telling and coverage of the Allison Baden-Clay and Daniel Morcombe murder trials. The newspaper is also Australia’s fifth-most read newspapers, with 3.3 million readers across its print and digital assets.

Other 2014 highlights for The Courier-Mail include the launch of a new publication, Queensland Business Monthly, and the Journalism Matters campaign in support of jailed Al Jazeera journalist Peter Greste. Dore also relaunched the paper’s website and mobile sites, and introduced a member benefit scheme.

“It was a really successful year for us. In a way, we’ve managed to get the newspaper world back on its feet a bit. We went through a period in our industry where there was a fair bit of negativity around newspapers over the past two to three years. There was lots of talk about circulation and readership getting away from us. [But] Queenslanders have come back to us, and we are doing really well. We’ve changed the focus of The Courier-Mail in some respects, to kind of reawaken our title to change and adapt to the nature of the changed media industry and the dominance of social media. These trendy things are popular, but we shouldn’t lose sight of the fact a lot of important newspapers are still sold in Australia, and a lot of people are still reading,” Dore told Mediaweek.

He suggested that newspapers had contributed somewhat to

newspapers continue to reach more readers than digital. Over four weeks, 14.5 million people read a printed newspaper, which equates to 82% of Australians aged 14 years and older.

uA PAROCHIAL PAPER?When Mediaweek asked Dore if he thought The Courier-Mail was parochial, he denied it. “We’re a proud Queensland paper, but I haven’t actually ever heard that before. But it becomes more apparent around State of Origin time. We had a bit of fun last year, after years of winning we lost to NSW. One of the biggest, most popular papers of the year was the day after. Instead of wallowing in defeat, we made it all about how we have a better lifestyle, better food and better everything than NSW. We declared that Queensland was winning at life, and it was very well received. There’s no doubt that Queensland was very upset to have lost Origin, but to turn it around and produce a stunt like that obviously captured people’s attention. We will always focus on what has the attention of Queenslanders.”

From that, we’ve seen a significant increase in purchase from places like Woolworths or Coles or the pertrol station, where people might just pick it up. By changing our front pages and making them more interesting, we have really widened our appeal. That’s been a real highlight.”

He suggested that this change in editorial direction was in part responsible for the paper’s impressive trophy cabinet. “The awards were definitely partially due to the new approach we are taking. What distinguished The Courier-Mail is that we’ve changed from a broadsheet style to a tabloid paper. While much of my background was spent at The Australian, The Courier-Mail’s change to a tabloid size has really helped us to rebrand. It’s very effective to have a tabloid product, and I don’t mean that in a pejorative way. We’ve shown you can have a strong newspaper that’s read by a lot of people in tabloid form, along with our sister papers in Sydney and Adelaide.

“That recognition from the PANPAs was because there’s no doubt there has been a fresh change to the paper. We’ve certainly been more prominent in national debates, and we’re tackling federal policies pretty heavily. We’re making an impact, and we’re in the public’s minds. I was really proud to win that PANPA, which also acknowledged that we’re able to do big circulation figures. We were down on circulation, but we’ve had quarter-on-quarter growth for the first time in five years. It’s tricky because obviously people’s readership habits are changing, but we still compel people to read the paper.”

He noted that 2015 would be no less busy for the paper. “We are definitely continuing on the journey of transitioning and evolving our newsrooms to adapt to the new technology that makes a journalist’s job both easier and more challenging. How we structure our newsrooms will also change – we’ve seen this big jolt in mobile and app technology over the last five years, and that’s what we’re going to focus on. We will particularly concentrate on video content for tablet and mobile.”

Revenue will be a focus for Higgins too. “Nationally Melbourne has always been really strong. The strength of Nova is its network and Melbourne has done a sensational job under Andrew Will as sales director. There is a lot of upside though for local sales in Melbourne.”

Nova Entertainment has had two strong years of growth and Higgins is forecasting that will continue. “We had double digit growth in 2013 and 2014 and I don’t

Nova Entertainment shuffled its executive team in December last year which resulted in the move of COO Louise Higgins to Melbourne

where she also took on management of the Melbourne radio stations, replacing Helen Davies after three years looking after Nova 100 and launching smoothfm in that market. Higgins started work in Melbourne in early January and spent some time with Mediaweek at the end of her first week.

About the move to Melbourne, Higgins explained, “We are now in a place at head office with a strong executive team and we want to have a bigger presence locally in Melbourne. We had been thinking about our executive structure for some time and it became obvious that there would be a lot happening in Melbourne this year. The time was right to have a broader national executive footprint and a stronger Melbourne profile. What happens in Melbourne in 2015 will influence the rest of the country. Having the Nova Entertainment COO based in Melbourne seemed right.

“It wasn’t a quick, knee-jerk decision where we thought we had to get the COO to Melbourne, but a decision that had been considered for some time.”

Higgins’s COO role does change with the move to Melbourne. She still has the Nova general managers in each market reporting to her. She loses though some of her other reports – HR, legal and finance. “I add direct responsibility for Melbourne. This is now the third time I have had a dual role. I was group general manager as well as being Sydney GM in 2012 and I looked after Brisbane for the first six months of 2014.”

Melbourne could be the place to be in radio from now on. Higgins explained: “Over the coming years in both audience size and revenue, Melbourne will be the biggest market in Australia.”

When asked what she is looking forward to in Melbourne, Higgins talked about the opportunities. “Nova’s Meshel and Tommy are only starting their second year and there is a lot of upside there. Having Rohan Brown as the new PD is important and we will be ensuring Nova Entertainment has a strong presence in market.

“In the past there has been a balance in my role about the internal operations and the external profile. This year will be much more about the external profile and championing the Nova and smooth brands and Nova Entertainment as a company.

WHAT HAS the company learned from smoothfm? Higgins: “It dawned on us how much of a lifestyle brand it was. It moved away from radio very quickly and we soon had a smooth book club, smooth wine, smooth holidays, smooth fitness and smooth travel. We are already starting to head that way with Nova and there is a lot more we can do with it as a brand.”

anticipate that being any different in 2015. Radio revenues are growing and it is not coincidental there is so much interest in radio. It is a dynamic, attractive medium that is attracting a lot of investment from new advertisers.” Higgins said Nova is expecting commercial growth from all parts of the business. “There will be much from Nova, smoothfm and new business. There is still a big awareness job for us to do regarding smooth. Marketing will be very important and an education process for agencies and direct clients around the smooth model.”

As to initiatives away from the core radio business, Higgins reminded us there had been plenty of them in the past two years. “There has been a big shift long before our name change. When clients come to us it is about talent integration off the air. A lot of the experiences we offer outside of the breakfast shows are of real interest to them. What the radio does is amplification – enhancing and promoting. What we have been doing off air with clients has been very successful.

“We didn’t change the name to Nova Entertainment until we were operating like a media company.”

Higgins said the Nova Entertainment structure in Melbourne is very sound. “The only change this year is having Rohan Brown as the PD and Peter Clay looking after smoothfm. It is now about taking the expertise we have and getting them out into the market – getting more profile, more events.”

The pace looks like it could be frantic too with four events under way in Melbourne in the third week of January.

uNOVA RADIO SCHOOLWhen Nova started there were claims it was being run by former Austereo staffers. These days the Nova graduates are making their way into other networks – Dan and Maz to 2Day breakfast, Hughesy and Kate to ARN networked drive.

“That is great for the industry,” noted Higgins. “The more interest there is in radio the better. What we saw when Kyle and Jackie O moved was a lot of media buyers having to reconsider their spend and they tried different brands. 2Day may not have benefited, but Nova and ARN certainly did. People who haven’t been here before are also coming to radio because of the interest.”

uNOVA ENTERTAINMENT: STATE OF THE NETWORKIn Sydney Nova Entertainment is looked after by group operations director Luke Minto. “That reflects that the rest of the group executives are based in Sydney,” said Higgins.Jay Walkerden has just been appointed general manager in Brisbane.

Peter Maynard looks after Adelaide and the legendary Gary Roberts remains in control in Perth.

On performance, Higgins said: “Brisbane and Perth continue to do very well. Also Star FM on the Central Coast. [GM] Paul Moltzen had a fantastic 2014 and is not a forgotten part of our portfolio. There is room to grow in Sydney and Melbourne. We could also do more in Adelaide. Nova 919 is #1 under 50 and with continuity in the Fiveaa lineup we have two great brands which can do more externally. We should be owning the town in Adelaide as we are #1 the under 50 and over 50 markets.”

As to any chance of Fiveaa being for sale, Higgins said it is a brand that historically is very important to Nova. “We don’t think it is an odd part of our lineup. It was our first metro asset and remains very important to us. Fiveaa complements Nova very nicely in Adelaide and gives us a very important extended footprint.”

KIIS, we think Gold has plenty of potential after going #1 last year. Brig and Lehmo have plenty of potential and we don’t see why we couldn’t be #1 and #2 in a very competitive Melbourne market. I don’t believe for a second what happened in Sydney in terms of survey one will happen in Melbourne, but I do believe over time that we could get there.

“We want to hold and strengthen our positions in Brisbane and Adelaide and then integrate Perth into our overall offering from a commercial perspective.”

Although Nova Entertainment and Southern Cross Austereo perhaps talk more about their digital and other media ambitions, ARN have an eye on that space too. “We are fortunate that we still see growth in our core assets. The work we are doing is attracting a lot of dollars to the radio industry. We are also

It took quite a while, but the owner of the broadcast licence for the Melbourne FM frequency at 101.1 acknowledged last year that to get the station firing they needed

to change the name. The station has arguably underperformed for many of the years it was known as Mix 101.1, a brand adopted after the name TTFM was dropped in 2001. It was just a matter of waiting for the right brand to come along.

The success ARN had with KIIS very quickly in Sydney made it a pretty easy decision in the end. “We used a lot of what we learnt in Sydney from the launch of KIIS,” ARN chief executive Ciaran Davis told Mediaweek about the launch this week. “Along with our content director Duncan Campbell we have been using KIIS content director Derek Bargwanna to oversee the launch of the brand. Although we are pulling on our experience we have a very strong local team who will be letting the station develop its own Melbourne flavour as well. You will see that coming through in the shows a lot more and in the marketing that is being rolled out as well.”

Davis admitted that as far back as 18 months ago they were planning to roll out a different network nationally to what Mix was. “Melbourne was an underperforming market for us, but we will be very keen to make sure that KIIS 101.1 is not KIIS 106.5. Localism that makes radio so powerful will be an important part of the new station.”

The commercial takeup has been strong so far for the Melbourne KIIS, with Davis telling Mediaweek there were more brands on board at this stage in Melbourne than there were in Sydney a year ago. “We have been very active in the marketplace with our sales teams visiting agencies and clients. Agencies are very supportive because they understand the work we did and how it rolled out in Sydney. Many will still wait for a book or two before they fully commit.”

As to what is the focus now for 2015, Davis said in Sydney there was still room for KIIS 106.5 to grow. “At WSFM too with Jonesy and Amanda in their 10th year it would be great to see them build on that success. Melbourne is obviously a big focus for us. As well as being very ambitious with what we want from

uARN BUYS 96FM FOR $78MARN already sold network ads for 96FM so it was well acquainted with its proposition. Davis said 96FM is not unlike 97.3 and ARN will integrate it as part of the KIIS Network. ARN is even looking at introducing the syndicated Kyle and Jackie O hour every day. “We know the brand well and we know the station well. Our sales teams are well versed on the format and it allows us to do true five-market metro integration which clients are looking for more and more and we weren’t able to do that until know.

“96FM is a very successful station in its own right, its ratings are very strong, its local positioning is very strong and its local sales are very strong. The benefit for us will be in the national offerings which will help us take what we feel is our fair share of national revenue.”

When it comes to ratings, Davis is confident of growth. “As we get to grips with the station and understand the market a bit more, we have plans to become much more aggressive from a ratings perspective.”

uARN’S KIIS NETWORKAlthough only two of the four stations carry the KIIS name, ARN has changed the marketing and branding collateral to make both 97.3 Brisbane and Mix Adelaide look like they belong to the same network. Davis: “What we have to be very careful of is that we have the #1 station in Brisbane and the #1 station in Adelaide which are very successful stations with slightly different formats. Overall when you look at our 25-54 offering it makes KIIS the #1 network. We are not going to do anything that jeopardises our positions in Brisbane and Adelaide.”

ARN has decided though to drop the successful local drive shows in Brisbane and Adelaide to replace them with a network drive offering. “That was a hard decision, but we are delighted Campo has decided to stay with us in Brisbane. In Adelaide Sean Craig Murphy was leaving and we wish him every success. The offering for a drive show is slightly different to a breakfast show. Other syndicated shows we have done throughout the network have seen their audiences increase. Audiences have gone up for the syndicated 3pm Pick Up, Ryan Seacrest and Kyle and Jackie O. While we will lose some localism in drive, the national brand that Hughesy and Kate have will be a strong offering.”

absolutely focused on our digital strategy and iHeartRadio will get a very big push and we expect enormous growth. We have big plans to take it beyond the airwaves into a more digitally focused asset.

“In some respects our digital strategy last year was about catching up because our numbers were pretty poor. We are not just looking for numbers, but targeted numbers. We have introduced some strong digital marketing capabilities to the business that we will be rolling out to market in about six weeks’ time. Our digital revenues were up over 60% last year with our audience up about 200%.

“It is important to stay focused on the core assets while building up other areas of the business to give us the long-term position that we want.”

Compton: “If people like our show they can consume it in so many different ways now. It’s not just being in a car on your way to work listening to the radio.”

Debuf: “Some people might just think we have the best Instagram and have never heard the radio show.”

When asked if the new Sydney breakfast team was ambitious, Debuf made some Harry Potter analogies mentioning Slytherins and Gryffindors. “I don’t know what that means,” laughed Compton.

Debuf: “We want to do a great job and we love new opportunities.”

Compton: “We have said yes to every door that has opened.”

Debuf: “We love what we do and we are constantly talking and texting each other and our team with ideas and messages. We never switch off and the team is like that as well.”

When we wondered if there was a serious side to Dan and Maz, who crack as many gags as Hamish and Andy do during an interview, Debuf replied: “What do you want to hear? About a sad clown who cries himself to sleep at night?”

The last time Mediaweek caught up with Dan Debuf and Maz Compton they were still trading as Maz, Dan and Shane as a very successful Nova

Adelaide breakfast show. We interviewed them a little over two years ago as they hosted three weeks of Nova national breakfast out of Sydney during a survey break.

No sooner had they returned to Adelaide from that visit and Debuf and Compton were poached by Southern Cross Austereo. They embarked on a journey that saw them hosting national evenings and then drive before ultimately landing the 2Day Sydney breakfast show.

“We both moved from Sydney to Adelaide to do Nova breakfast,” Debuf told Mediaweek. Compton added: “Our goal was always to get back to Sydney. We had done two years and had some success and we felt like we were ready to go home.”

Debuf: “We moved back to Sydney, I bought an apartment and moved in with my girlfriend and my chihuahua. But then just six weeks after we start renovating our dream property, SCA’s Craig Bruce tells us to get excited about Melbourne.”

Compton: “We headed to Melbourne to host a national drive show [taking over from Jules Lund and Fifi Box]. Ten months later we hear that same voice, ‘Guys…it’s time to get excited about Sydney…again’.”

Debuf: “This time it really feels like we are home.”

Compton: “This is our sixth year on air together and everything we have done has been building to this. It is perfect timing for us and it’s Sydney…breakfast. We are stoked.”

When we asked Debuf about the size of the Sydney audience they were inheriting from the previous 2Day FM breakfast show, now rebranded as hit104.1 2DayFM, he said they had been able to find an upside. “You can find positives in anything. There are not many people listening, but that is a great point to grow from. The people who do join in are going to be the people who love it.”

Compton: “Our fans seem to have been really supportive about the move. You can talk about numbers, but we already feel a buzz and excitement about our show.”

“We have 100,000 fans on Facebook,” added Debuf. “And 55,000 on Instagram. There is a broader conversation to be had with the audience. Having people ticking a box isn’t the world’s most amazing way of assessing what is going into people’s ears. But we are here to talk into a microphone, not to reform radio data collection!”

ON LAUNCH DAY, the Southern Cross Austereo executive team was watching the new Sydney breakfast team from the other side of the studio glass. Network producer Sam Cavanagh was taking notes, new 2Day content director Adam Williscroft was working with the producers, and network content chief Craig Bruce arrived during the last hour. They were also joined by SCA sales chief Andrea Ingham and SCA marketing boss Nikki Clarkson.

Compton: “There will be serious topics that will come up on the show and we can absolutely cover that. We find our own way of covering serious subjects, but our default is just to be funny.”

Debuf: “If people’s lives are getting serious they can always know that when they switch to Dan and Maz it is going to be fun.”

Listening to their initial Sydney breakfast shows, it seems the team is keen to keep things simple, not over-complicating things and offering plenty of music. “It might get a bit complicated if we dig ourselves into some weird burrow,” laughed Debuf.

Compton: “We have been told before not to over-complicate things. So far it’s like if it ain’t broke don’t fix it.”

Debuf: “It ain’t broke yet.”Compton: “We’ll find out in about eight weeks.”As to how ready the announcers are to go on

the road with the sales team, they both put their hands up. “That is absolutely part of the job,” said Compton. “We love meeting clients, going out to media agencies and putting on a show.”

Debuf: “We have no illusions that for many people we are new, despite working together for so long.”

uTEAM DAN AND MAZExecutive producer is Leon Sjogren and senior producer is Carly Humby who were formerly working with Dan and Maz on drive. Also working on the show is guru producer Sam Cavanagh. Debuf: “Leon will be the next big producer in radio. He’s a gun. He’s the hardest worker and when the shit hits the fan and it’s getting very intense he can still come up with more things he can do to make the show better. When the discussion started about who we wanted to work with on drive we both just wanted Leon because we had seen him working with Fifi and Jules.”

Anchor Michael Christian, MC, has been part of the Dan and Maz team for a while now too. Debuf: “We have had a different anchor every year almost. It’s like in every Harry Potter book there is a different defence against the dark arts teacher.” Compton: “He is such an integral part of the team we didn’t want to lose him. There is a vibe we are a gang of misfits and it wouldn’t be the team without him.”

Is it a challenge filming the content?Some days we are set the task of shooting 60-90 minutes of finished television content in a 24-hour period. That is a lot of filming. A lot has to happen, even with six cameras, to make an entertaining 90 minutes of television. Then they need clever ideas in post-production to make it engaging for the viewer. Otherwise it can be like watching paint dry!

You made two seasons of The Block in 2002 and 2003 before Nine cancelled it. How did you feel?The first series averaged over 2m viewers and was the highest-rating series ever. The second averaged 1.6m and was Nine’s #1 series that

year. Because it dropped Nine thought it would continue to fall. Everybody later realised audiences were declining everywhere and it wasn’t just on The Block. It was hasty of Nine to cancel The Block after two series, but looking back now I’m glad because if we’d continued we might have declined in line with the housing market. We were keeping pretty busy doing other things. [See box.]

The first three seasons of The Block were in

Sydney, but you have only ever been back once since.Correct – in Melbourne we went from Richmond to South Melbourne and then returned to Tamarama in Sydney for Allstars. Then we did South Melbourne again for two seasons, then Prahran and then South Yarra where we are now. In our last Sydney season we had 6,000 people at the open for inspection. At Dorcas Street in South Melbourne we attracted 40,000. The audience in Melbourne really engages with The Block. Melbourne people love the fact we are here, the ratings are strong here, as are they in other markets too. If we left Melbourne maybe those ratings wouldn’t be as strong here.

What has going from nine a year to 135 meant for post-production?The good thing about my relationship with David Barbour is that I run production and he runs post-production. His staff over the 10 series of The Block has increased from two people to about 60 people. We have always worked on the theory it takes one good editor one month to cut one episode of the show. When you are making 130 plus episodes you still want to give one month’s work to each episode which means throwing a lot more people at it. Part of the success of The Block is that the really talented producers who work with us, and who could perhaps be working in more senior

roles elsewhere, continue to come to work because it is as exciting for them as it is for us. They enjoy being around to see how it all plays out.

How is your reality show different to some others?We are not manufactured reality like some others. It is not pre-scripted to any degree. It has been proven time and time again on the auction day that we don’t know how it will end. We are always as surprised as anybody else by the outcomes. Shit just happens and we have a great team who can turn it into gold…great television. They find a way to tell the story and make it engaging.

will come off. We are on air soon, people could decide not to watch it. That day has to come. We make sure we try to reinvent the program each season where we strike a balance of the audience knowing they are going to get something familiar that they know and like, yet they also will get something of a surprise that will engage them.

We always try to do something different whether it be an office building, a movie theatre, a motel or what we are doing now in Triple Threat.

Allstars was successful but we haven’t done another one, Fans V Faves was successful and we haven’t done that again either. As soon as you start repeating yourself you risk seeing the audience decline. That’s perhaps what happened with MasterChef after a few years – although they have been able to work really hard and get people back.

Do you research your ideas?The network does, but not to test an idea. We all go with gut feeling. We do research to see how the audience feels about The Block generally. The network needs to get a sense of how many more years they can get out of it. We feel very lucky every time a new season rates, but the network is planning the next five years. If interest rates stay low and people continue to invest in property, then The Block is a very handy piece of television. It is full of inspiration for people looking to buy and sell.

If interest rates went up a few points and house prices fell, the steam could come out of the renovation market which could affect the show’s ratings. I don’t see any changes in the market though for maybe 24 months. The way we are going that is 300 episodes! By that time I’ll be done anyway…we’ll be exhausted [laughs]. We will be worn out possibly before the audience is.

Cress: “We filmed it and it was great fun, but when it was edited it looked so dangerous that we couldn’t put it to air. It looked like someone might have been injured. We try a lot of wacky stuff, some times we go too far.”

Kitchen Rules or Nine’s The Block. For 2015 we cover the latter as The Block commences its 10th season.

Nine will again show two series this year for the third consecutive year, after testing two seasons successfully in 2013 and 2014.

In 2012 Nine broadcast The Block Allstars for six weeks and then a full series of The Block Sky High. Last year The Block Fans v Faves ran for 11 weeks followed later in the year by The Block Glasshouse for 12 weeks.

Earlier this month Mediaweek got a tour around the South Yarra site of the new series – The Block Triple Threat – by executive producer Julian Cress. No spoilers here, but we can say viewers should expect to see another stunning transformation, but not one without its share of dramas along the way. After the tour Cress sat down in a nearby café to talk about the reality franchise.

That was a pleasant surprise to all of us as we were very nervous going into it.

We came up with the Celebrity Overhaul format and had a great time doing that and they were very successful. Deborah Hutton was the host. We also made a show that remains one of our all-time favourites – Celebrity Circus. That was also a big hit and has never been done again – don’t ask me why.

“At the end of 2005 Eddie McGuire took over Nine and David Gyngell went to the US working for ITV. We didn’t see eye-to-eye with Eddie and we left and went to the US. We spent three years there and did a series for NBC that we sold to them called The Chopping Block. David Gyngell came back to run Nine again and asked us to return too.

“We had just got settled in Los Angeles, but he wanted us back to help turn Nine around. We did a series called homeMADE with Neale Whitaker as a judge and Darren Palmer was the runner-up. That series didn’t do well enough to continue so we gave The Block another go with the Vaucluse series. “I talk every day with David and he is often visiting the site for room reveals. With him and his team locked in dark rooms we try and get many of them down to Melbourne as often as we can.”

The Foxtel and Seven joint venture Presto TV has been the first of three major new SVOD players to officially launch in Australia. Presto started providing video on demand to customers on Sunday January 18.

Presto TV joins Presto Movies, which features blockbusters and all-time favourite films from a constantly updated collection of movies.

Presto TV brings together a collection of TV shows from production houses including HBO, Showtime, CBS Studios International, Viacom International Media Networks and Hasbro Studios as well as a range of some of the local content from Foxtel, the Seven

Network and ABC Commercial.Presto TV will feature complete

seasons of programs which are available to stream and watch instantly on demand. Presto TV will be the only Australian SVOD service to offer HBO programming including full seasons of The Sopranos, The Wire, Sex and the City, Entourage, True Blood, Girls and Boardwalk Empire from HBO as well as Deadwood, distributed by CBS Studios International.

HBO has made the decision that Game of Thrones won’t be available on any SVOD services, worldwide, so have not licensed the program. Foxtel told Mediaweek the best place

to see Game of Thrones in Australia is on Foxtel or Foxtel Play!

Subscribers can also watch full seasons of Showtime original series from CBS Studios International including Dexter, The Borgias, Californication, Nurse Jackie and Ray Donovan with new seasons coming first to Presto TV for the stand-alone SVOD window.

Foxtel’s award-winning local dramas Wentworth, Love My Way and Tangle will be available as well as a range of programming from the Seven Network including Packed to the Rafters, All Saints, Always Greener, overseas dramas Mr Selfridge, Rosemary and Thyme and A Touch of Frost, as well as full series of a number of Seven’s locally produced factual, drama, comedy and entertainment programs.

Presto TV will also feature complete series of the hit CBS Studios International comedies Frasier, Cheers and Everybody Loves Raymond.

Presto TV will include full seasons of a range of ABC Commercial comedy, drama and kids titles including Summer Heights High, We Can Be Heroes and Ja’mie: Private School Girl, all starring Chris Lilley, A Moody Christmas, The Librarians and dramas such as Rake, Redfern Now and Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries.

Presto TV, Presto Movies and the Presto bundle are currently available across PC, Mac, iPads and via Google Chromecast, with selected Android tablets coming soon. Subscribers can register up to four compatible devices and watch two devices simultaneously.

Fox has two movies in the box office chart that have each grossed over $10m – Taken 3 and Night At The Museum: Secret Of The Tomb – and both represent the third and possibly final episode of their franchise. Meanwhile, the distributor’s new chart entry at #6, Birdman, has not only the week’s highest per-screen average but also nine Oscar nominations under its belt.

Warner Bros dominates the download charts with more than half the entries this week. In addition to Jane The Virgin, the studios are responsible for The Flash (five episodes), The 100 (three episodes), Pretty Little Liars (two episodes) plus no less than a Christmas episode from old favourite The Vampire Diaries.

THE HOBBIT TRILOGY ENDS WITH BIG DOLLARS

The final of a marathon six fantasy movies from New Zealand director Peter Jackson based on the work of J.R.R. Tolkien ended this summer

with The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies being released on Boxing Day. Jackson saw his first Lord of the Rings movie released in 2001 and until the final Hobbit release, his only other films were 2005’s King Kong and 2009’s The Lovely Bones.

For six of the years between 2001 and 2014 Jackson drove summer box office takings around the world. His final Hobbit film helped set a new January record in Australia with the first two weeks bringing over $80m to the box office, up 18% year-on-year. The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies had an opening week of $12.11m and after four weeks it had taken $31.93m, down slightly on The Desolation of Smaug’s $34.78m after its first four weeks.

However other key releases helped lift the Australian box office including Walt Disney’s Big Hero 6 with $18.06m after four weeks and The Water Diviner and Night at the

Museum: Secret of the Tomb which both had $13m after four weeks.

The most recent box office hit is Taken 3 which had racked up a very handy $10.37m after just two weeks which helped push the box office haul over $100m after three weeks of 2015.

Next week sees the release of American Sniper which has set January records upon release in the US.

Daniel Hill, managing director of Val Morgan, commented, “We expected 2015 to be a record year so this is a terrific start for our advertisers. The unprecedented lineup of blockbuster titles ahead is very exciting. In the next month alone we have Kingsman: The Secret Service, Fifty Shades of Grey and The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. Alongside delivering the best in entertainment, cinema provides a unique environment for advertising cut through.”

Other titles releasing from March include Cinderella, Furious 7, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Jurassic World and Ted 2 – all in cinemas before the end of June.

Recording devices linked to television sets have been lying dormant over the initial weeks of the new survey year. Just three programs managed to find an extra 100,000 viewers – Seven’s Bones and Nine’s Person of Interest and The Mentalist.

Just two other shows did over 60,000 – an episode of Seven’s Criminal Minds and the ABC’s coverage of the Sydney midnight New Year’s Eve fireworks. That makes the program one of the few live events to ever motivate people to hit the record button and then watch the event back.

Just three programs in the OzTAM consolidated chart for week 2, 2015 managed to attract a catchup audience over 100,000 this week.

The lack of first release drama and a plethora of live sporting events contributed to viewers deciding there wasn’t much they bothered to watch on time delay.

Attracting the biggest catchup audience was Nine’s The Mentalist, although the extra 116,000 is fairly modest compared to survey weeks. The other programs over 100,000 this week were Seven’s Criminal Minds and Seven’s Bones.

Incredibly, only two other programs in the top 100 managed to get extra audiences over 50,000 – ABC’s Sherlock (+83,000) and another episode of Seven’s Criminal Minds.
