Prepare for the UCI As most of you know, 4th Air Force will be visiting us just
before and during our August UTA to give us a SAV for theupcoming UCI next year. I need each of you to make thatlast push to clean up any open items on your self-inspectionchecklist. The 507th made the move to the Managment In-ternal Control Toolset, which will help facilitate the self-in-spection process. This new system also gives supervisorsgreater oversight into the health of their own programs. We,as a wing, have made great progress in the last couple ofyears, so let’s prove to 4th Air Force how good we really are.
We are about one-third of the way through the 101 Criti-cal Days of Summer and so far so good. We need to continueto stress safety and ORM both on and off-duty. If you are ina vehicle, whether you are driving or a passenger, seat-beltusage is mandatory both on and off base. Most serious inju-ries and deaths are caused because seat belts were not used.BUCKLE UP!!
Last month we participated in a nation-wide exercise andour results were outstanding. For the first time in the historyof the 507th we generated eight aircraft in record time. Iappreciate the hard work that all of you gave to make thisexercise such a success. Even though this was mainly anoperations and maintenance exercise, we would not have beensuccessful without the support group’s help. Numerous indi-viduals from LRS, Services Flight, Communications Flight andSecurity Forces came in for a second weekend last month tohelp. Thanks to all for such a GREAT EFFORT.

Instructors at Altus Air Force Base,Okla., have one of the most crucial mis-sions in the Air Force, training the world’sbest aircrews for global reach missions.
Those instructors will soon havepartners in that mission when a smallReserve unit is activated at Altus in the2010 fiscal year.
In FY 2008, Altus instructors trained8 KC-135 Stratotanker boom operatorsand 38 pilots for Reserve units. Addi-tionally, 49 loadmasters and 91 pilotswere trained for Reserve units flying theC-17 Globemaster III. Incorporating re-servist instructors will give these Airmengreater insight into what their unit envi-ronments will be like.
While the Reserve instructors willgive the schoolhouse more of a TotalForce atmosphere, the core curriculumwill remain unchanged. “Today, our cur-riculum is designed to provide high qual-ity mobility crew members across theglobe,” said Lt. Col. Jim Dittus, 97thTraining Squadroncommander. ”Changes in the curriculumare not necessary because Air Force
Reserve Command instructors providethe same high quality instruction as ouractive-duty instructors and are just ascapable of training students with the cur-rent curriculum.”
According to Lt. Col. Brian Ede, 58thAirlift Squadron commander, reservistswill provide several benefits to the train-ing process. “The instructors in eithersquadron will be interchangeable and theinstruction students will receive will beseamless,” he explained. “A reservesquadron brings a plethora of experienceand continuity to the schoolhouse that anactive-duty squadron cannot provide dueto the continual PCS cycles.”
This continuity will allow the reserv-ists to make an immediate impact, re-lieving the active duty manpower re-quirement and allowing more aircrewmembers to serve in operational wings. And their experience, said Colonel Ede,will continue to ensure that the studentsreceive the best training possible.
“It is important to all parties to en-sure the active-duty and reserve person-nel find a balance between training andflying operational missions,” he said. “Itis the only way we can continue to pro-vide the best training possible to our stu-
dents. They deserve nothing less.” Colonel Ede will rely on the experi-
ence of others to help ease the transi-tion period for the incoming instructors.“I have not been through this type oftransition, however many bases in AirEducation and Training Command have.I fully expect to be calling Vance andLaughlin Air Force Bases to see howthey did their transitions and get theirlessons learned,” he said.
The new instructors will enter a re-warding but very demanding job. “In-structors need to have excellent abilityto fly the aircraft, while simultaneouslyproviding instruction on their maneu-vers,” Colonel Dittus explained. “Thisrequires great technical knowledge,strong flight skills and exceptional situ-ational awareness. They also must beable to closely supervise student perfor-mance to anticipate errors and preventdangerous inputs. On top of this, I ex-pect unquestionable professionalism toset the right example and champion theAir Force story.”

One of the most striking things to foreigners visiting ourcountry is the incredible number of choices we have as con-sumers. The rest of the world simply doesn’t have them.And choices are multiplying. For example ...
* In 1975 the typical supermarket had 9,000 products;today 30,000 +!
* The average household in 1975 got 6 TV stations;today more than 30.
* In 1980 there were 564 mutual funds; today nearly3,500.
Never in the history of mankind has any group ofpeople had the choices we as Americans are privilegedto have. In fact, that’s how some would define free-
dom—as choice! Choose whether or not to complete apregnancy. Choose what substances I take into my body/mind. Choose who, how many, or what gender mysexual partners are. But unlimited freedom of choicedoes not mean true freedom whatever we choose. Somechoices we make are bad for us.
There was a movie once where a group of men wereshipwrecked and had to spend many days on a life raftin the middle of the ocean. It was hot and their freshwater ran out. Men became thirsty beyond all reason.One night, while the others were asleep, one of the menignored the warnings and started drinking seawater. Hequickly dies. A good drink of seawater contains seventimes more salt than the body can safely take in. Ironi-cally a person dehydrates because the kidneys demandmore water to flush salt out. The more you drink thethirstier you get! That is the way sin is – it never giveswhat it promises.

Alarm levels, MOPP levels, take cover, incomingcasualties...these were the resounding echoes heard through-out the 507th Medical Squadron (MDS) on June 6th. Over70 members in the 507th MDS participated in an all-day train-ing and mass-casualty exercise.
Early in the morning, Lt. Col. Thomas Franklin, 507th MDScommander, took charge of the deployed medical squadronduring a scenario-based deployed exercise. Personnel re-ceived briefings which ranged from Cultural Familiarizationto Medical Ethics/Detainee Operations. Tech Sgt. RodneyJones, 507th CES, also provided an excellent briefing onMOPP Ensembles, UXO identification and PAR Sweeps.
The real action took place in the afternoon, when overseven Disaster Teams were tasked with hands-on retrievaland care of victims. AFTSO, patient care, and patient move-ment skills were also demonstrated. The realistic moulagetechniques perfected by Senior Master Sgt. Marie Pollardand her team, enhanced the sense of urgency in the ‘treat-ment’ of 10 critically injured patients. The clinical and techni-cal skills of the personnel assigned to the 507th MDS areoutstanding—they are the “best of the best.”
In a constant effort to ensure ‘warrior readiness,’ the507th MDS continues to participate not only in Wing directedexercises, but seizes additional opportunities to enhance spe-cific AFSC Readiness Skills for all assigned personnel.
At the end of the day — lessons were learned and unitcamaraderie was enhanced! Who could ask for more?

Train like you mean it

Whether you realize it or not, each of you play acrucial role in the defense and security of the UnitedStates. That’s why it is vital that each of you are fullyprepared to perform your Air Force duties. And at thetop of the list of being prepared is the timely comple-tion of technical training and warfighting skills train-ing. So much is riding on your ability to perform yourAir Force job correctly and efficiently. Not only is theAir Force relying on you to complete your training ontime so you are fully qualified to do your job, it is alsorequired to progress through the ranks. Completing yourCDC’s on schedule, and the core tasks required in youron-the-job-training curriculum must be your focus if youare in upgrade training for the 5 or 7 skill level. Afterall,you cannot do your job until you’re trained, qualifiedand signed off to do so. Also, promotion to the nexthigher grade is contingent on completing training in mostcases. Trainees, trainers, and supervisors; please con-tinue to make job qualification training a top priority.During our hectic daily routine, it’s easy to overlookthe awesome responsibility each of us vowed to acceptwhen we raised our right hand. Take time to considerwhat you agreed to do when you signed up for militaryservice. I believe this is an excellent way for each ofus to “reenergize” and keep us on track to do our verybest.
Even though it is not said often enough, the Ameri-can people appreciate what you do, and they are count-ing on you to know exactly what to do when the chipsare down. So, make time, become an expert in yourchosen career field, and then sharpen your skills ondrill weekends by practicing your trade so you’ll beready when called upon. Thank you for all you’ve doneto make the 513th ACG a great unit to be a part of.

Not all of today’s mid-level NCOs have extensive first-hand supervisory experi-ence in a reserve environment; therefore, the instruction in this course is intendedto improve the students’ military supervisor capabilities and understanding oftheir positions as related to the USAFR. The major said that when he en-tered the education field his goal wasto teach and then go into elementaryadministration. “The Putnam Cityschool district was my number onechoice,” he said. He stated he real-ized the first part of his dream in 2005when he joined the district as ateacher. “The other part of that wishbecame a reality June 1st. I am verylucky to have such a wonderful dis-trict standing behind me, my Air Forcecareer, and especially my family. Mystaff, co-workers, and leadership havebeen nothing but supportive of my mili-tary deployment.”
Pierce finished stating, “My goal isto get back home, reunite with my fam-ily, and get to work in August. I’m look-ing forward to getting back to thestates and meeting the students, staff,and parents. My Air Force career hasprepared me to lead. I get to live andteach the Air Force core values ev-eryday to my staff and students. It’sgoing to be a great year.”

Goodmanadded that on the day he returnedhome, Colonel Fulton and his wife methim at the Oklahoma City airport withcookies and a hero’s welcome home.“Colonel Fulton continues to thank mefor my service in Iraq as well as thank-ing me and the Airmen with me for ourservice in a war zone,” he said.

507th MOFBeing enlisted in the United States Air Force Reserve, we
have an investment in the Community College of the Air Force(CCAF). This post-secondary or tertiary education is a non-compulsory educational opportunity provided to us for our in-tellectual growth and continued advancement within the en-listed grades.
The United States Air Force (USAF) has always recog-nized the positive effects of education on Air Force personneland has continually established various programs to meet theneeds of the Air Force, its personnel and society as a whole.One of the most notable programs is the CCAF. The college
is one of several federally chartered degree-granting institutions;however, it is the only two-year institution exclusively servingenlisted personnel. The college awards the Associate in AppliedScience degree after a student successfully completes a degreeprogram designed for an Air Force specialty. The CommunityCollege of the Air Force is accredited through Air University bythe Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Col-leges and Schools to award the associate degree.
We can obtain an associate degree in our job-related Air ForceSpecialty Code by completing the academic requirements listedfor that chosen field. This degree will not only be the continuingmeasurement for the Air Force to support upward movementwithin the ranks of the enlisted members, but also assist in theretention of servicemembers. We all know that education is thekey to opportunity and it will help build the enlisted force thatpropels the Air Force forward into the future.
How do you get started? All you have to do is decide that youwant to have a degree and make the commitment to changeyour life as necessary to obtain your degree. Once you make thedecision to make the sacrifices and put in the hard work you willbe on the way to learning and acquiring the skills. You mightignite a passion for learning that drives you to continue the pur-suit of more knowledge.
For those of us in pursuit of higher education from the begin-ning of our Air Force careers, it is imperative that you take a lookat the list of courses you need for your associate degree. Youmight already have the course work completed or just need afew classes. This might be the degree that will boost your careerupward or the catalyst that assists with a transition to a careerlater in life. Or you could find yourself being drawn into interestsor areas of study that produce new life passions. That’s the at-tractiveness of continuing education; it can help advance per-sonal and professional goals while offering lifelong learning.
CCAF opportunities enable reservists to pursue their educa-tional and professional growth goals at the same time they aremeeting military obligations. This is another great available op-portunity that should not be overlooked. CCAF opens the doorfor reservists to increase their training in a given field or to tran-sition to a new career. Through continuing education, you canenhance your own skills and hence, your employability.
Sen. Evan Bayh (D-Ind.) put education, in general, succinctlyin perspective when he noted, “A good education is the key tonational economic growth, as well as personal opportunity, and itis what sets America apart from other nations.”
Stop the procrastination! Take the time to find out whichclasses you need and take a few nights out of the week toattend class. Before you know it you will have what you needfor that degree.
Airmen are workshop’s top priorityIf the advance planning is any indicator, Airmen attend-
ing a half-day Enlisted Workshop this September should bein for a treat.
The 507th Air Refueling Wing’s Human Resource De-velopment Council is conducting its first ever TinkerReserve Enlisted Workshop from 7-10:30 a.m. Saturday atTinker’s Base Chapel building 5701 near the base theater.
The workshop coordinator is Senior Master Sgt. DavidLiszeski, HRDC Senior Enlisted Co-Chair. Guest speakersare planned from the Veterans Administration, the Air ForceSergeants Association, Wing Chaplain (Maj.) DwightMagnus and others. Space is extremely limited and theworkshop will only be able to host 50 applicants.
To help with workshop planning, the sergeant attendedthe Third Annual Career Enlisted Workshop at WestoverAir Reserve Base held June 7th – 9th, in Chicopee Massa-chusetts. “I wanted an opportunity to work with a McNeilAward winning HRDC workshop coordinator to help en-hance our vision for the upcoming workshop and to buildprofessional working relationships with HRDC leaders fromthe 22 Air Force,” Liszeski said.
“Observing how their workshop was run gave me anopportunity to meet with those involved in coordinating theevent and the attendees. I used this opportunity to learnmore about how we can conduct a fun, meaningful, wellthought out workshop,” he said

Have you ever noticed that some-times you turn in a DD 2813 (Record ofCivilian Dental Examination), and itwell…. disappears into the “black hole”of medical administration? Worse yet,the system still says you’re overdue foryour exam, and your 1st Sergeant isabout to take you out back and “explain”things to you. Would you like to know whythat happens? Maybe even how to pre-vent it from happening again? Below issome information that might help.
FYI - Periodic medical and dentalexams come due in your birth month.You have until the end of your birthmonth to have them done. After thatyou are overdue and may be placed on“no-pay, no-points” status until your ex-amination is caught up.
Any member more than six months
Black Hole theory and DD 2813soverdue for their dental exam who triesto submit a DD 2813 must be careful.If the date of the exam on the DD 2813they submit is more than six months fromtheir NEXT dental exam due date (endof the upcoming birth month and fivemonths prior), the system will reject it asbeing too old. (If you have ever turned in aDD 2813 and next month you were stilllisted as overdue, this may well by why…
How do you prevent this? If you aremore than six months overdue for your den-tal exam (that is, the end of your last birthmonth), DO NOT submit a dental examdated greater than six months from the endof your upcoming birth month. (That is, noearlier than five months from the begin-ning of your upcoming birth month.)
Another reason your DD 2813 may“disappear” is because this was the yearyou were supposed to have your dentalexam done by a military dentist. A DD
2813 can’t substi-tute for a militaryexam. How do youknow which yearsto get what??...Just remember:members age 19and then every 3rd year after that mustget a military dental exam. It doesn’t mat-ter when during the year their birthdayfalls, just the age they are ON THEIRBIRTHDAY. For the years in-between,use a DD 2813.
Hopefully, this information will help younavigate around the “black hole” of medi-cal administration. As for your First Ser-geant, just try and navigate around him/her until you get your exam updated….

507th Air Refueling Wing members will head off July 19 to24 to participate in Air Mobility Command’s 2009 Rodeo compe-tition at McChord AFB, Washington.
Four aircrew members and 12 maintenance members willrepresent the wing against more than 40 teams and the esti-mated 2,500 participates from the U.S. Air Force, Air ForceReserve, Air National Guard and selected foreign countries.
Additionally five members from the 72nd Aerial PortSquadron and four members from the 507th Security ForcesSquadron will be participating in the competition. Col. MichaelMahon will represent the Wing Commander and Senior Mas-ter Sgt. Lisa Ortiz will serve as an umpire on the AMC team.The last AMC Rodeo competition took place in July 2007.According to Maj. Marvin Ashbaker, 507th Operations Sup-port Flight and Team Chief for the 507th team, the 507th hasnot participated in this competition in nearly a decade.
“Rodeo is an international competition and focuses on readi-ness,” the major said. He stated the event features airdrops,aerial refueling and other events which showcase the uniqueand wide-ranging capabilities of military security forces, andaerial port, maintenance and aeromedical evacuation person-nel. Rodeo 2009 will include over 50 competition events cov-ering air mobility flight and ground specialties. Aircrew eventsfocus on combat skills.
Historically, 10 international teams compete with an addi-tional 10 nations sending observers. Frequent participants in-clude: Belgium, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, SaudiArabia, and the United Kingdom.
Maintenance events involve aircraft inspections, timelyrepair, and aircraft launch and recovery. Aerial Port eventsconcentrate on speed and accuracy of loading and unloadingcargo. Security Forces events include a combat endurancecourse, and rifle and handgun competitions. In accordance toAMC rules, wing members began practicing for the comple-tion May 1.
Rodeo provides a forum for U.S. and international teamsto share the best of tactics and techniques, further preparingmobility forces for future engagements. An example of suc-cessfully sharing tactics and techniques can be found in hu-manitarian operations by the Pakistani Air Force immediatelyafter the severe earthquake of 2005. The PAF observed air-drop capabilities at Rodeo 2005, and in fact stayed past rodeoto learn more about airdrop.
“Historically the lessons learned at this completion justifyRodeo,” Major Ashbaker said. “It ensures we train the sameway we fight and allows us to measure our improvements intactics, techniques and procedures. Rodeo also allows ourAirmen to become familiar with our allies and joint partners.”

I believe that is why we havemade goal eight straight yearsand the only component of theservice to do so I might add.

On Feb. 25 the Air Force Reserve Com-mand implemented a new program in orderto self-report close-call incidents simplyknown as “Close Call.” Studies in severalindustries have shown that there are be-tween 50 - 100 close calls for every minoraccident and 300 or more for every majoraccident and therefore provide warning ofan “accident waiting to happen.” A closecall is an unplanned incident that does notcause personal injury or property damage,but under different circumstances could havedone so. Experience with close call report-ing systems has shown that continual re-view of close calls can provide valuable in-formation for insight into a system’s vulner-abilities and help in the identification of ar-eas for system correction or improvement.
Senior Master Sgt. GaryBristol and JamesTempleman, 507th ARWSafety Office, hang a sign bythe flight line to remind unitmembers to report closecalls.
The same conditions that lead to mishaps alsocause close calls. So basically, close-callsand accidents have the same causes. Study-ing close-calls can help us understand safetyproblems and make corrective changes be-fore an accident takes place.
Under “Close Call,” military members willbe encouraged to anonymously report anyevent or observation that they feel identifiesa potential hazard to flight, ground, mainte-nance, or driving operations via an internetweb link. This new system will be taking theAir Force Safety program from its traditionalreactive role and create a new proactive rolethat will eliminate mishaps before they oc-cur. The Close Call Reporting System

If you were to walk through individual offices at the 507thAir Refueling Wing, you might be tempted to think everythingis calm and “business as usual.”
You definitely wouldn’t think the wing was helping to leada command-wide firestorm. But that’s exactly what’s takingplace as the wing takes an evolutionary role in a new systemdesigned to help reservists efficiently manage critical re-sources. Wing members are now 100 percent on board withthe command’s new Management Internal Control Toolsetprogram offered through ReserveNet.
Basically MICT replaces the old paper Self InspectionProgram process and permits individual offices or functionalareas to conduct semi-annual inspections and record resultsinto a central database. Through this system, wing leadershipmay review individual self inspections results to better sup-port mission objectives. Also, because MICT is web-based,command functional areas have rapid capability t o update orrevise their respective checklists online and deliver a mes-sage of those changes immediately to everyone assigned arequirement on a particular list.
“Even though we were not one of the pilot wings deploy-ing MICT, the 507th is 100 percent on board and now withinthe top third of the command supporting this new process,”said Lt. Col. Bonnie Tremblett, 507th ARW PerformanceManager. Tremblett said the 507th recently achieved a first in
the command by bringing 4th AF into the MICT process. “Weare the first NAF-Wing effort to implement NAF access toan assigned wing’s MICT program to allow electronic ac-cess/review of functional self-inspection program status aspart of our upcoming SAV visit,” she said. Eventually all com-mand functional areas should have the look down capability toassess individual offices or functional areas within a specificwing or organization without having to leave their desks.
“This AFSO21 project was intended to revolutionize theway we inspect,” Tremblett said. “If a wing’s programs arefunctioning properly then this reduces the need for inspectionvisits. The MICT program gives command and NAF func-tional areas the opportunity to see where problems exist andgenerate just-in-time Tiger Teams to help fix discrepancies orproblems. That is a much more efficient and cost-effectiveway of doing business,” she said.
Tremblett said that inputs from wing members are helpingReserveNet evolve beyond its original design. “Our wing mem-bers are constantly providing the ReserveNet team withfeedback…’can we change this, can you do that?’ The pro-grammers for the MICT process have let us know they arevery appreciative of our comments and support,” she said.
Where ReserveNet is now the central springboard for allAFRC computer-based training, MICT will eventually be-come a key “compliance risk mitigation tool,” Tremblett said,adding that even the Air Force is looking at the possibility ofadopting ReserveNet as a platform of choice.

After extensive prototype design testing, the following changesare on track for fielding new PT uniforms in September:
-- The improved PT running suit redesign includes a thinner,more flexible fabric to address common complaints about fabric“noise” and streamlines the design by removing the collar hood andshoulder vents. The improved design also reduces bulk by decreas-ing the amount of fabric in the running jacket mid-section and pantslower leg. Additionally, the new liner includes antimicrobial proper-ties and will shed moisture at a faster rate than the current version.
-- Improved PT shorts to be introduced this year feature asofter, more flexible fabric, side-pockets, increased inseam lengthand redesigned inner liner.
--An improved PT shirt resembles the current short-sleeveshirt but will feature a lighter-weight, higher-performance fabricwith moisture wicking properties and odor reduction.
-- The Air Force has also authorized optional PT gear for wear.A new long-sleeve T-shirt and sweatshirt are now available forpurchase through the Army and Air Force Exchange Service. Inaddition, optional running shorts will be introduced this summer.DoD launches official military blogging platform
The Department of Defense unveiled “DoDLive,” a centrallylinked and unified platform from which services can create andmaintain blogs. This tool will enable DoD organizations to com-municate on a more personal level and can be used as an exten-sion to their Web sites.
The department’s official blog is at http://DoDLive.mil and ismanaged by the emerging media directorate. Posts will cover aspectrum of content, including first-person updates from Penta-gon Channel reporters and senior Defense Department officials.
