What is DNA?

DNA stands for deoxyribonucleic acid

DNA is our body’s instruction manual that tells us how to grow and develop.

DNA is made up of letters G, C, T, A

Almost every cell in your body has DNA.

DNA

Long stretches of DNA make up genes.

Genes make different things for our body.

They are packaged up into chromosomes

Chromosomes are like a big recipe box for our bodies and DNA is the recipe!

A DNA spelling test?

There are 3 billion letters in our DNA.

We have spell checkers that make sure we don’t make too many mistakes…

But sometimes mistakes happen and that can be good or bad.

My job

I am a doctor that specializes in people who have problems in their DNA.

I try to solve the mystery of what is wrong with them by looking at their DNA.

Knowing something is wrong with their DNA can help them, their families and their doctors take better care of them.

I love my job because I get to help people of all ages.

I get to teach patients, their families and their doctors about genetics.

I can be a risk taker because I get to do research and discover new things… even new genes!

Maybe I’ll find the gene for awesome second grade teachers…
