DEFICIENCY OF ARTILLERY SURGEONS IN INDIA.-The deficiency of medical officers in the East extends to theArtillery as well as to the Line. The Royal Artillery now inIndia exceeds in strength three Infantry regiments, and tothis force there is attached but one full surgeon; he is stationedin the Bengal Presidency, and holds the post of Superintending-surgeon of Royal Artillery for the whole of British India. Wedo not pretend to explain the circumstance now, nor even fullyto comprehend it. It may arise from the hitch which occurredwhen an attempt was made by the late Government to amal-gamate the medical departments of the Ordnance and armygenerally, or from some other cause which remains unex-

plained. The fact is merely stated as it has been given to uson unquestionable authority, and from the circumstance, weventure to draw the conclusion that the sooner the manage-ment of the whole department be overhauled the better.Strange to say, the Bombay and Madras Presidencies are un-represented by a single full surgeon of artillery. This branchof the service has been considerably augmented in India ; athousand men were lately under orders for the three Presiden- Icies. In the Bombay Presidency alone there are upwards of1800 artillery, with drafts daily arriving. Recent accountsfrom India mention the mortality amongst this valuable forceas fr om twelve to fourteen daily ; and whilst every regimentin India ought to have a surgeon and three assistants, theArtillery has to depend upon assistants solely.

ASSOCIATION OF MEDICAL OFFICERS OF ASYLUMS ANDHOSPITALS FOR THE INSANE.—The annual meeting will takeplace at Edinburgh, on Wednesday, the 28th inst, under thePresidency of Dr. Conolly, D. C.L.THE HOSPITAL OF THE COLDSTREAM GUARDS, VINCENT-

SQUARE, WESTMINSTER.—This establishment for invalids of theColdstream Guards is about to be considerably enlarged, ahouse adjoining it having been taken down. The opportunityfor the alteration is very favourable, as there is only one bat-talion of the regiment in town, the other two being at Windsorand Dublin.

QUARANTINE AT NAPLES.-" We are thrown into confu-sion here," says a private letter, " by the sudden and most un-expected circumstance of quarantine being placed on all vesselsarriving from France, Malta, Constantinople, &c."

RE-VACCINATION.—The Paris correspondent of a dailypaper writes that re-vaccination does not seem to have agreedwith the French army. In the 10th regiment of Artillery, operated on at Toulouse, so many men are said to have been laidup in consequence, that the Emperor has sent his physician,Dr. Larrev. to see about it.

THE COOLEST PARTS OF ENGLAND.-The residents ofTorquay, already famous as a town of cool and pleasant retreatduring the summer months, are endeavouring to establish itsclaims to peculiar advantages in respect to temperature. The

people of Sidmouth are disposed to claim the superiority inrespect of coolness for their own town. The following is atable of relative temperature, during last week, when, in

many parts of England the thermometer stood at 100°. It issupplied by the Rev. S. Henneken, who has kept such recordsfor more than twenty years.

A CAUTION TO SURGEONS.—An elderly man, named (atpresent) John Jones, has been brought up before the magis-trates at Marlborough-street for falsely representing himself tobe L surgeon in the Rines who has been at Malta, and who isnow in a destitute state. He is stated by the officer of theMendicity Society to be an ingenious begging-letter impostorwho has baffled the Society for years. He has been’ threetimes convicted, and in his possession a paper was found whichshowed that he had recently obtained from Mr. Stanley, Brook-street, £1; Sir Benjamin Brodie, .=61; Dr. Watson, Henrietta-street, £1; Mr. Propert, New Cavendish-street, £3; and others. The prisoner was remanded for a week.PazPEa LUNATICS.— A Bill of Mr. Hardy, Mr. S.

Estcourt, and Mr. Knight repeals the 14th section of the Act18th and 19th Victoria, cap. 105, and makes pauper lunaticswhose settlements cannot be ascertained, chargeable on theborough where they are found.THE epidemic prevalent at Bengazi is stated not to be

plague, but a malignant kind of typhus fever.

EXCLUSION OF QUACK MEDICINES FROM RUSSIA.-Anotice from the Board of Trade appears in Tuesday night’sGazette stating that a despatch has been received from He°Majesty’s Charge d’Affaires at St. Petersburgh, announcingthat the importation of various "medicinal substances" intoRussia has been prohibited. Amongst the excluded articlesare Morrison’s Pills and Revalenta Arabica.

ARTIFICIAL RESPIRATION IN CHLOROFORM POISONING.- A case has occurred in Paris in which artificial respirationwas resorted to with success, to obviate the eftects of an over-inhalation of chloroform.

CASUALTIES IN THE RUSSIAN ARMY IN THE CRIMEA.- A St. Petersburgh letter of July 5th, says :-‘ Fresh andharrowing details have just been published of the casualtiessuffered by the Russian army during the war in the Crimea. It appears that in the affair of the Tchernaia alone, on the 16thof August, 1855, there were 5048 wounded, amongst whomwere 246 officers and seven generals. At Fort Nicholas, wherethe first hospital for the wounded was organized, as many as200 amputations were performed in a single day, and one sur-geon had often 500 patients to attend to. Most of the menwho evacuated the Simpheropol hospital died on the marchhomewards. These revelations, proving how defective theRussian military administration is, have made a great sensationin St. Petersburgh.ESTIMATES FOR ARMY MEDICAL IMPROVEMENTS.—A

supplementary estimate of £133,000 (vote 14) is required forbarracks, &c.--viz., .657,000 for sanitary improvements inbarracks; £70,000 for erecting a new hospital at Netley (Hants)for 1000 patients; and X3000 towards carrying out the mainsewer of that hospital.TYPHUS FEVER.—The parish of Little Clacton, Col.

chester, is suffering under a severe visitation of typhus fever. In one family, the father and an adult son and daughter havefallen victims to the disease; and there are said to be upwardsof 60 suffering from the attack.CONVALESCENT INSTITUTION.-The receipts during the

past year were X2445 16s. 3d. ; the expenditure X2437 14s. 4d.DEATH FROM INOCULATION.—At the late Meath assizes

Mary Moran was indicted for the manslaughter of a child byillegally inoculating it with small-pox. She was found guilty, and sentenced to three months’ imprisonment.HEALTH OF LONDON DURING THE WEEK ENDING

SATURDAY, JULY 17TH.-The deaths in London in the weekending July 17th were 1173. Those from the zymotic classof diseases last week were 403. Amongst these the diseasemost fatal at the present time is diarrhoea, the deaths from whichwere 126; those from cholera decreased to 4; and 3 of these 4occurred to children, and were caused by summer cholera. Allof the 126 cases of diarrhoea, occurred amongst infants, withthe exception of 9. This complaint was prevalent, apparently,in two of the North Districts, Marylebone and St. Pancras, especially the former. Measles and scarlatina were most fatalin the East Districts and in those of the south side of the river. The deaths from scatlatina were 73, or double the averagenumber. Three deaths from diphtheria are returned.
