services as the best security for their future influence. Itis perhaps necessary to observe that there must be a perfectconsolidation of the medical staffs of the Poor-law Boardand the Privy Council. The registration of disease, thesupervision of hospitals (whether workhouse or public), theinspection of medical relief, and the sanitary inspection ofmatters relating to the prevention of disease and the spreadof epidemics, must be in the hands of the same inspector;and it is to be hoped that the two staffs will cordially sup-port this view, for a want of harmony might lead Mr.Stansfeld to tolerate the existing want of organisation aslong as possible.

Mr. M’LAGAN moved the second reading of his Fires Bill.It provides that every fire about the origin of which thereis any suspicion, shall be reported by the police to thecoroner, and that the coroner shall hold an inquiry onreceiving such a report, or when he is directed by theSecretary of State, or when application is made to him bypersons who have suffered by the fire. The Home Secretaryis empowered to appoint an assessor to sit with the coronerand the expense of the inquiry is to be paid from the ratesThe Bill was read a second time.

We mayobserve that the musical accessories are exceptionally good,and can point with pleasure to the really clever musicalsketch which brings the entertainment to a close, as beingentirely free from the insane trash and vulgarity whichgenerally go to make up the representations of "leadingcomics."
