nople.-Dr. Hans Schmid, surgeon to the Bethany Hospital,Stettin, where he contracted septicaemia while opening a foulabscess. He had been in the Servio-Bulgarian War, havingcharge there of a hospital in Belgrade. He had written a greatdeal on surgery, and only a short time before his death hehad contributed an important article on the surgery of thekidneys and ureters to a well-known enoyclopsedia. He wasonly forty-three years of age.-Professor Hartelius, Directorof the Central Institute for Curative Gymnastics in Stock-holm.-Dr. Schneller, a well-known ophthalmic surgeon inDantzig, where he had an important private hospital.

DIPHTHERIA IN LONDON.-The deaths regis- I

tered from diphtheria in the county of London last weeknumbered 60, and were 10 in excess of the corrected (

decennial average for the forty-ninth week of the period1886-95. Not only so, but they exceeded the total of each (of the two weeks preceding, which was 59 in the earlierand 48 in the latter of the two weeks. The usual

(disproportionately large number of deaths in very youngpersons was witnessed again, and the deaths were also Ionce more widely distributed throughout London, there

having been 5 in persons belonging to Islington as

well as to Hackney; 4 in persons belonging to Camber-well ; while Limehouse, Poplar, Bermondsey. Lambeth, andGreenwich sanitary areas were each credited with 3 deathslast week. On Saturday last there were 805 persons ill ofthe disease in London hospitals, the admissions to which inthe week included 115 cases of diphtheria. In GreaterLondon the total registered deaths from the malady lastweek numbered 73, there having been 13 in outer London, ofwhich 6 were of persons residing in the West Ham registra.tion district.

KINGSTON - ON - THAMES AND DISTRICT PHOTO-GRAPHIC SOCIETY.-On Dec. 2nd, at the invitation of theKingston Photographic Society, a large number of medicalmen in the Thames Valley district witnessed a demonstra.tion of the x rays by Mr. Mouland. A number of surgicalcases were radiographed and viewed through the screen.

FOOTBALL CASUALTIES -At Henley, on the21st ult., in a match between the home team and theClerkenwell Club, the Henley centre forward sustained acompound fracture of the right leg.-At Sunderland, on the15th ult., during a match on the Town Moor, a youthreceived a kick on the knee and was taken to the Infirmary,where he died.

GLASGOW MEDICO-CHIRURGICAL SOCIETY.-Ameeting of this society was held on Nov. 27th, Dr. E. L. Reid,President, being in the chair.-Dr. Middleton showed as afresh specimen the parts from a case of Abdominal Aneurysm.The patient was a man aged twenty-nine years who attributedhis illness to a strain received in May, 1895. When seen inJune, 1896, he had epigastric pulsation which disappeared onrest, with severe pain. Eventually pulsation appeared in theregion of the lower ribs to the left of the middle line with agradually increasing tumour non-pulsatile in the left abdo-men. The diagnosis lay between an aneurysm and a rapidlygrowing tumour. Post mortem a small smooth-walled

aneurysmal sac was found projecting from the aorta.between the pillars of the diaphragm, and outside this was.a large false sac filled with partially organised clot and fluidblood. The vertebrae were extensively eroded. Some two-years previously the patient had a collection of fluid in hisleft pleural sac which on aspiration was found to be blood-stained.-Dr. Middleton showed a man aged twenty-ninayears with Acromegaly. The chief evidences of the disease:were in the hands and feet; the face was but slightlyaffected, and there was no thickening of the neck or enlarge-ment of the tongue. The visual field was not appreciablytcontracted.-Dr. Edgar read notes of a case of Hyper-grophic Pulmonary Osteo-Arthropathy and showed photo-nraphs and skiagrams of the limbs.-Dr. A. Napier readdotes of six cases of Chorea in young women with twoeaths.
