The American Board of Medical Quality, with the cooperation of the American College of

Medical Quality, offers physicians and other eligible professionals a certification examination to test basic knowledge in medical quality management. The content of the exam is based on the textbook Medical Quality Management: Theory and Practice and other materials listed on the website.

The CMQ exam will be offered in conjunction with the ACMQ annual national conference, Medical Quality 2018.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this conference, attendees should be able to:1. Recognize obstacles, expectations, and requirements

10. Identify the difficulties, and solutions, in/to maintaining consistency across multi-site collaborative safety systems.

11. Describe general human factors principles and how to apply these principles to health care safety and quality.

12. Implement human factors principals on teamwork and team processes.

13. Outline the challenges with health IT usability, steps for improving health IT usability, and specific high risk components of health IT usability.

14. Describe basic adult teaching techniques.15. Interpret the changing political, economic, and

regulatory health care environment to continue appropriate and viable application of high quality medical care.

2018 Founders’ AwardIn recognition of long standing national leadership and exceptional ability to foster and support health care quality.

Benjamin Chu, MD, MPHDr. Chu has more than four decades of experience as a clinician, administrator and policy advocate. Throughout his career, he has placed strong emphasis on physician integration, population health, patient experience, and health systems innovation to drive for better outcomes and performance. He has been a strong proponent of the integration of health information technology to help drive

delivery system change.

Dr. Chu recently joined the Health Practice at Manatt Health Solutions as Managing Director. He is Chair of the board of directors of The Commonwealth Fund and sits on the board of the National Committee for Quality Assurance. Prior to this, he served in many senior level leadership positions including President and CEO of the Memorial Hermann Health System and the Executive Vice President and Group President for Kaiser Permanente's Southern California and Georgia. He was a Robert Wood Johnson Health Policy Fellow in 1990 serving as Legislative Assistant for Health for Senator Bill Bradley of New Jersey. Dr. Chu earned his medical degree at New York University, a master's degree in public health from Columbia University and a bachelor's degree from Yale University.

ABIM Foundation for the Choosing Wisely® initiativeAccepting Award: Daniel B. Wolfson, Executive Vice President and COO, ABIM Foundation

The ABIM Foundation’s work focuses on exploring how physician leaders, health care organizations, and public policy can foster medical professionalism at all levels as a means to improve health care for everyone. They recognize that obstacles to fulfilling the ideals defined in the Physician Charter can occur not only on the individual level, but also within an organization and

throughout the profession.

The Choosing Wisely® campaign is one of the ABIM Foundation’s most well-known initiatives. It was originally conceived and piloted by the National Physicians Alliance through an ABIM Foundation-funded Putting the Charter into Practice grant in 2009.

The goal of the campaign, launched in 2012, has been to promote conversations between clinicians and patients about overuse in health care and that help patients choose care that is: supported by evidence; not duplicative of other tests or procedures already received; free from harm; and truly necessary.

It galvanized medical specialty societies and other clinical organizations to identify tests or procedures commonly used in their fields whose necessity patients should question and discuss with their physician. More than 80 specialty societies have published over 550 recommendations regarding overused tests, treatments and procedures. The campaign and society recommendations received more than 1,700 mentions in journal articles in 2017; thousands of media articles have referenced Choosing Wisely since the campaign began.

Building on its success, the Foundation’s efforts have begun to focus on stimulating health care delivery systems to implement Choosing Wisely recommendations on a large scale.
