THE 40TH ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING OF THE FOUNDATION WILL BE HELD ON SATURDAY, THE

1. To consider and adopt the Audited Income and Expenditure Account for the year ended March 31, 2018 and the Balance Sheet as at that date together with the Report of the Auditors thereon.

2. To consider and adopt the Annual report of the Foundation for the year 2017-18.

3. To appoint Auditors and to fix their remuneration for the year ending 31st March 2018.

4. To elect Members to the Board of Management in the vacancies caused by the retirement of the following members, who being eligible offer themselves for re-appointment

Their term of appointment expires in September 2018. As per 11(v) of the Bye-laws of the

Foundation read with Section 15(5) of the Tamil Nadu Societies Registration Act 1975, they

are eligible for reappointment to the Board of Members. They have offered themselves for

reappointment.

As per bye laws of the Foundation 10 (c) Ms. Rajashree Birla being the nominee member of

the M/s Essel Mining and is automatically entitled to be re-elected on completion of three

years.

Due to the demise of Dr. B. R. Barwale, a vacancy has arisen in Patron member category.

Dr Barwale represented M/s Jamwadi Investment Trading (P) Ltd on the Board of Medical

Research Foundation. Any member nominated by M/s Jamwadi Investment Trading (P) Ltd

will be entitled to be elected as member of the Board of Management as stipulated under

clause 10(c) of the bye laws. The nominee of M/s Jamwadi Investment Trading (P) Ltd will be

elected to the Board during the AGM.

The Hospital Collection this year was higher by Rs.1565 lakhs compared to 2016-2017 with an

increase of 9%. After meeting all the expenses including depreciation, Net Income over

Expenditure was Rs.(74) lakhs compared to the Net Income over Expenditure of Rs. 609 lakhs

of 2016-17.

Donations received during the year amounted to Rs.1109 lakhs. The corresponding figures for 2016-17 were

Rs.1318 lakhs.

Additions amounted to Rs.770 lakhs in which equipment for updating of technology and replacements

accounted to Rs.638 lakhs and EDP Equipment / Software of Rs.131 lakhs.

Corpus fund Investments in RBI Bonds and Fixed Deposits as at 31st March 2018 is Rs.4007 lakhs compared to

Rs. 3923 lakhs as at 31st March 2017.

EYE BANK

The number of free surgeries in the FY 2017-18 was 23245 against 20201 in FY 2016-17. Number of free

surgeries as a percentage of total surgeries done was 37% in the FY 2017-18 and 34% in the FY 2016-17. The

revenue foregone through free services and waiver / concessions amounts to Rs.4020 Lakhs. Last year the

corresponding amount was Rs.3720 lakhs.

"The Details of Corneal Transplant services during the period April 2017 – March 2018 are as follows:

1. Total Number of eyes Collected: 1280 numbers

2. Total Number of Corneal Transplant surgeries performed: 684 No's

3. Amount Received from Reliance Dhristi Project towards performance of free corneal transplant:

Rs. 6,54, 000 (Rs. Six Lakh fifty four Thousand only)" pending amount 1,20,000. (Rs. one lakh twenty

thousands only)

The Mobile Surgical Units (MESU) were designed by collaborative effort by Sankara Nethralalya and Indian

Institute of Technology, Madras, one of India’s Premier Engineering Institution. MESU is a unique project with

all assured safety features offering most modern state of art Cataract surgery. After surgeries, MESU also

provides ambulatory care to people to people at their door steps, who otherwise would not go to a hospital to

undergo the required surgery. We have deployed 2 units, one for the State Tamil Nadu and the other at

Jharkhand.

The Chennai Unit which became operational in the year 2012, has so far conducted 57 camps, screened more

than 45,000 patients and performed 7,550 cataract surgeries. This was mainly possible due to the generous

support from many organizations.

1. A monthly meeting attended by the Management Representative – Medical,

Management Representative – Non medical and the Medical Director is held to go

through individual Quality Indicators for the Centres. This is a major step forward in

systematically ensuring Quality Standards of the hospital

2. All committee Meetings held in defined schedules

3. Patients Feedback is systematically analysed and patient’s issues sorted to a

greater extent.

4. Patient Safety Training is provided for all staff involved in direct patient care.

5. Patient Shadowing introduced to experience what patient is experiencing within

the facility during their treatment journey.

6. Facility Audits done to ensure patient safety

7. Ensured to conduct Code Red ,Code Blue and Code pink mock drills.

The Jharkhand Unit which became operational in the year 2016, has so far conducted 32

camps, screened more than 16,200 patients and performed over 3,500 cataract surgeries.

This project is entirely supported by Tata Trusts.

It is a pleasure to note that IT& Systems is now dedicated in honour of our former Board

Member Late Dr. B. R. Barwale and is now named as Dr. B. R. Barwale Center for Technology

and Innovation. The center was inaugurated by Mr Raju Barwale on 27th Jan 2018 at a grand

function held in Chennai and we re-dedicated ourselves in pursuit of developing innovative

technology solutions to improve quality and reach of ophthalmic care for the masses.

EMR & Hospital Management solutions

The country witnessed a major change to a newer tax regime with the implementation of

the GST. The implications on GST in terms of billing, inventory across various functions of the

hospital and integration into the Financial modules was seamlessly done and to a very tight

schedule. The teams from SN also had to educate the users of the software in other

locations who have implemented our EMR / HMS solutions and also carried out changes in

those systems in record time.

HMS – EMR was updated for newer functionalities which include the following:

1. Specific requirements for Appointments and follow up.

2. Automatic fixing of surgery fixing

3. Enhanced rules for billing, payments and waivers and escalation for exceptions

4. Customized reports for MIS to catering to various user departments

5. More billing templates for corporate customers

6. Additional billing reports for collection and follow up

7. Additional functionalities for LAB and reports for tracking TAT and NABL compliance

processes

APPRAISAL Online - A completely new system was developed for Appraisal for SN employees

and integrated with Rubrics. The entire SN appraisal system went online providing end to

end visibility of status of appraisals and printing of reports and was rolled out in less than 3

months from start.

IT Infrastructure

SN thrust on adopting modern technology got a significant boost with the addition of Modern

day storage systems for its Data center coupled with high performance HP 3PAR systems now

form part of the core Data center technology giving us the edge to compute in a secure and

faster manner. The new computers are configured for fail over capabilities gives enormous

advantage in providing more reliable services with higher uptime for IT services to users.

The Wide area network and Internet bandwidth across SN branches has also been upgraded

to much higher capacities to provide significantly improved access to EMR and other patient

information to the users.

We continuously strive to protect the IT security from threats and vulnerabilities.

Significant upgrades were made to our Antivirus systems to stay protected against virus and

malware threats, besides hardening the networking for intrusion detection and VM Ware

upgrades for high availability and failovers.

As part of internal IT automation developed tools for ticketing, asset tracking and

preventive maintenance and for reporting and compliance to NABH processes.

The Maryland chapter of the SN OM Trust organized a grand fund raiser concert by Padma

Vibhushan Dr KJ. Jesudas on the 17th of September 2017. The event was a huge success and

the 1000 seat capacity Lassiter school auditorium was filled to capacity. The event helped in

raising significant funds for SN’s cause

After the concert, Dr. Ram Sriram, President of the Carnatic Music Association, said that it

“was a scintillating two and a half hours of music.” Sriram related how each composition

that Yesudas sang during the concert inspired an emotional and spiritual feeling in the minds

of the listeners. He remarked that “only when an artist feels the emotions in his own heart,

can he, in turn, inspire such feelings in the hearts of the audience.”

The Washington chapter of SN OM Trust conducted a Bansuri Flute-ViolinJugalbandhi fund

raiser by Violin Maestro KamalakiranVinjamuri and Eminent Bansuri Flute Maestro Shri Ronu

Majumdarat at the Sri Bhaktha Anjaneya Temple, Washington DC. The event was a grand

success, leading to significant fund raising and awareness collection

The Washington chapter of SN OM Trust conducted a concert blending Carnatic and

contemporary music by Maestro Shri TM Krishna on 9th April, 2017 at the Shri Bhaktha

Anjaneya Temple, Ijamsville, Greater Washington. The concert drew a large audience and

helped in significant donations to the SN OM Trust

Human Resources, with its effective organizational practices has contributed in

maximizing employee performance levels and productivity in the Institution. Through its

employee engagement and welfare programs, the department has constantly been

motivating and enriching the employee’s career progress.

Sankara Nethralaya has always believed in recognizing the performance of employees

through its excellent reward and recognition programs. The best Man & Woman employee of

the year, the best Department and the Outstanding performers in each department are

chosen and rewarded at the Independence Day celebrations held every year. The

recognition of the number of years of service put in SN is also given to commemorate the

hard work and dedication of the employees of SN. Ms. A. Yasmeen Begum of the Patient

Service Department and Mr. Koushik Adhikary of the Teleophthalmology Department

adjudged the Woman and Man of the year 2016.

Sri Srinivasa Sankara Nethralaya and Mobile Eye Surgical Unit Jamshedpur were chosen as

the Best Department for the year 2016.

Employee Satisfaction Surveys were conducted to understand employee morale and job

satisfaction levels across all departments of SN.

Children of employees who had scored 80% and above were given merit awards on Republic

Day to further motivate them.

The SN family celebrated the Foundation Day, Republic Day, Sports Day & the International

Women's Day with all joy and enthusiasm. Doctor's Day was also celebrated with and to mark

their special day, sweets were distributed to all the doctors at SN.

The Sri Srinivasa Sankara Nethralaya (SSSN) which was established in the year 2009 by

Sri Srinivasa Sankara Nethralaya Trust by Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam (TTD). This center

has screened more than 11,642 new patients and has performed 3,004 cataract surgeries

during the financial year 2017 -18. (FY 2016 -17: 11,424 new patients and 2,519 surgeries).

Mission for Vision Trust is also playing a major role in mobilizing patients for free cataract

surgeries at SSSN. Sankara Nethralaya is also exploring the possibilities of expanding the

services offered at SSSN in the near future, with support from TTD.

1. Kamalnayan Bajaj Sankara Nethralaya, Kolkata, West Bengal:

This new facility at Rajarhat, Kolkata was inaugurated on 27th February 2017. Since

then this center has shown tremendous growth prospects. All the services under this

facility is fully functional now and we hope with this expanded facility, we would be in

a position to cater to the ever growing demand for our services in the eastern region.

This center has screened more than 59,000 new patients and has performed 3,578

surgeries during the financial year 2017 -18.

Aditya Birla SankaraNethralaya has grown further in its stature by catering to more

number of patients through its base hospital and as well through its community

outreach programs. This center has screened more than 1, 46,000 new patients and

has performed 10,471 surgeries during the financial year 2017 -18. (FY 2015 -16: more

than 90,000 new patients and 11,663 surgeries).

Our center at Sri City, catering to the needs of industrial workers and also the needs of

The ‘Temple of the Eye’ celebrates the ‘spirit of giving’ with great aplomb!

There could not be a more momentous occasion to an institution and its Founder ingrained

with the quality of gratitude and reciprocity than acknowledging the deeds and honouring

the great men and women who have empathized with its cause and made it what it is today.

The Sankara Ratna and Dr. M. S. Subbulakshmi awarding ceremony being held at the stately

Rajendra hall at the ITC Grand Chola on the 27th of January 2018 reflected this in no small

measure. The high profile of the awardees and the Chief Guest conferring the awards had

quite naturally raised a lot of expectation and made it a most keenly awaited event within

and outside the institution. If the smooth flow of the proceedings were a testimony to the

excellent planning that had gone behind the event, the spirited observations and

spontaneity of the awardees and the Chief guest made it exceed all expectations, keeping

the filled to capacity hall absorbed, informed and entertained.

The close to 3 hour program turned out to be an epic of sorts, little wonder that it did so,

given the fact that the achievements, name and fame of the man and woman being

honoured had assumed epic proportions and the award was being conferred by a legend.

Srimathi Akila Ganesan, Director, Administration, Sankara Nethralaya set the tone for the

evening with a succinct note on the awards, as the gesture of gratitude and honouring by an

institution created for the people and by the people, to the great men and women who had

empathised with its cause and supported it in its journey of providing quality eye care to

those who could pay and those who could not!

Dr. K. S.Vasan, Managing Director continued the Sankara Nethralaya saga where Srimathi

Akila Ganesan had left, with a most interesting account of how the institution had grown

from its humble beginnings to a world class, tertiary ophthalmic centre encompassing

clinical care, research, teaching and training and community eye care within its fold. He

traced the inception of facilities in the city and other parts of the country, the steady growth

of an institution committed to reaching out its services without diluting its quality,

principles and philosophy. The senior Sankara Nethralaya official touched a chord in every

heart with his emphatic account of how the Founder and Chief steward of the institution

Dr. S. S. Badrinath was seized by a single idea, dream and mission and how it controlled his

life, brain, muscles as advocated by Swami Vivekananda and how it became a reality in the

form of Sankara Nethralaya. Dr. Vasan closed his talk with a strong emphasis on the social

and economic impact of the innovations and service rendered by the institution and a strong

appeal to join its mission.

The awarding ceremony was a spell binder with interesting, inspiring and amazing glimpses

of the day’s awardees and the celebrities assembled to honour them flowing as a steady

stream. Less known, inspiring, moving facts like Shri. A. M. Naik the hero of corporate Indian

folklore bequeathing 75% of his wealth to charity and how the Naik and Nirali trusts founded

by him were revolutionizing the countryside with their trailblazing health and education

initiatives. The deep commitment of Shri Deepak Parekh, the voice of corporate India, to

the values of humility, accessibility, accountability and transparency and his simple logic

and conviction that ‘corporate giving’ was a natural concomitant to ‘corporate earning’.

The memorable day when legal legend Nani Palkhivala summoned Shri Deepak Parekh to his

home and in a gesture of boundless generosity and faith requested him to divest his life

savings in the form of shares and other holdings and transfer the same to Sankara

Nethralaya, after just one visit to the ‘Temple of the eye’.

The Sankara Ratna awardee’s invaluable role in bringing illustrious members from the

nation’s business capital to empathize and support Sankara Nethrlaya, of whom was

Dr. B. R. Barwale, the father of India’s seed industry, whose company contributed to the

setting up of the clinical care block at the SN main campus named after it as Mahyco block

(Maharashtra hybrid seeds company). A touching account of how this key player in India’s

green revolution donated the entire prize money he received with the ‘World Food Prize’ to

research in agriculture. Srimathi Vani Jairam’s warm note on her experiences with M S Amma

after whom the award she was receiving is named, the rich compliments she received for her

manner of singing from the immortal, legend. Touching accounts of how the ‘Meera of

Modern India’ had toured large parts of rural Maharashtra, propagating social values and

causes through her golden voice, travelling all the way to Iowa to render the invocation at

the function honouring Dr. Barwale with the ‘World Food prize’ known popularly as Norman

Borlaug award.

The evening marked a giant leap in leveraging technology for better dispensing of eye care

by the two times winner of the prestigious NASSCOM-KPMG awards for ‘Best IT adoption on

the healthcare sector’ and ‘Best Electronic Medical Record (EMR) solution’ with the

dedication of the Dr. B. R. Barwale centre for ophthalmic technology and innovation, which

would focus on developing and implementing technologies to enhance reach and quality of

eye care to the masses. Speaking on the occasion Chief Technology Officer

Shri Chandramouli explained on how the new centre will endeavour to make the enormous

data available with the institution actionable for practitioners and stakeholders.

Speaking with a strong sense of nostalgia a visibly overwhelmed Dr S S.Badrinath recalled

that he came to India with just four dollars and times have been indeed been very good and

eventful and he considered himself very blessed to have been able to give shape to his

dream of starting a world class eye care institution, he expressed that the past has been very

good and the present is also very promising and hoped that the future will be good too. He

thanked his colleagues for the hospital being rated as the best in its kind and went on to

highlight a few major Sankara Nethralaya landmarks like the success of the MESU which

reported absolutely no complications, being the only eye care institution providing

technology support to 9 eye care institutions, the impact of Polymerase Chain Reaction

(PCR) process aided by artificial intelligence developed by the institution. He recounted

with gratitude Sankara Ratna awardee Shri Deepak Parekh’s rare gesture of sanctioning a

huge loan from the HDFC to Sankara Nethralaya by instructing his officials from the USA,

when it was negotiating for the acquisition of the erstwhile lady Willingdon Hospital.

While it was natural that the evening resonated with the greatness of the great

personalities whom the ‘Temple of the eye’ had chosen to honour on this momentous

occasion, the inspiring and laudatory references on the host institution, the detailed

account of its services and achievements and the need to support it, made by the awardees

and the chief guest and the guest of honour made one wonder if even the representatives of

Sankara Nethralaya could have made such a strong case about themselves, as its friends and

well wishers gathered on the occasion had done. The spirited references to the institution

in their acceptance speeches by the awardees and the chief guest’s address made one

wonder if Sankara Nethralaya was felicitating its friends and supporters or was being

felicitated by them on this memorable day! A glorious example of the Bard’s immortal lines

‘The quality of mercy is twice blessed; it blesseth him that gives and him that takes’.

CONCLUSION

The year 2017 – 2018 saw the Foundation stepping into its 40th year of operation. This

remarkable achievement of service to the country has been due to the commitment and

dedication of all the Employees of the Foundation supported by the Members of the Board of

the Foundation under the towering leadership of the Founder, Dr. S. S. Badrinath. The 40

year journey has been made possible by the support of Well-wishers, donors and

Philanthropists, who have kept their faith in the philosophy and the work of the hospital

over the years.

The Foundation has recorded yet another satisfying performance with the hospital

collection showing a growth of 8.3% in comparison to the previous financial year. The year

saw the finalization of the agreement with Larsen & Toubro to build the new community

hospital at St. Thomas Mount, Chennai. The new centre in Rajarhat, Kolkata, which was

inaugurated in February 2017, showed a steady increase in both Out-patients and In-

patients. With the road transport connectivity increasing manifold in the Rajarhat area with

the opening of many companies and residential complexes in the area, reach to the hospital

has become easier, adding to the good growth of the hospital

A special feat of note last year was the performance of the Mobile Eye Surgery Units in Tamil

Nadu and Jharkhand. The two projects performed a total of 4198 totally free cataract

surgeries in villages and tribal areas of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Jharkhand,

compared to 2374 surgeries performed in the previous financial year. The team is Jharkhand

is especially reaching out to many tribal areas that are un-served with eye care. The Tamil

Nadu MESU project completed 50 camps, the 50th camp being held in tiny hamlet of

Sappanipatti, on the Krishnagiri – Salem highway. The relevance of MESU in combating rural

blindness could be gauged by the fact that none other than the Governor of the State, His

Excellency Shri Banwarilal Purohit, presided over a function held on 12th February 2018, to

commemorate the 50th camp, as the chief guest.

The Sankara Ratna and Dr. M. S. Subbulakshmi award ceremony was held at the stately

Rajendra hall at the ITC Grand Chola on the 27th of January 2018. Mr. Deepak Parekh,

Chairman, HDFC received the Sankara Ratna Award, and Smt. Vani Jairam, renowned

vocalist, musician received the Smt. M. S. Subbulakshmi Award. Mr. A. M. Naik, Group

Chairman, L&T presided over the function and gave away the awards. It was indeed a special

evening for Sankara Nethralaya, as the Dr. B R Barwale Center for Innovation was also

inaugurated. The family of Dr. B R Barwale attended the function. The program was well

attended by the doyens of Industry, friends, well-wishers and donors of Sankara Nethralaya.

During the program, Mr. A. M. Naik announced that his trust, the Nirali Memorial Medical

Trust, was planning to set up an eye hospital in Gujarat. He said that Sankara Nethralaya will

manage and run the hospital, thereby opening the first center for Sankara Nethralaya in the

West of our country.

The year also witnessed a number of the Ophthalmic Consultants in the hospital receiving

National and International acclaim and awards. The Indian chapter of Vision 2020, the joint

global initiative between the ‘World Health Organization’ (WHO) and the ‘International

Association for the Prevention of Blindness’ (IAPB) conferred its highest and most

prestigious award ‘VISION 2020: The Right to Sight- INDIA VISIONARY AWARD’ for year 2016 on

Dr. S. S. Badrinath, Founder and Chairman Emeritus, Sankara Nethralaya. The awards were

presented at the annual conference of Vision 2020 held on the 3rd and 4th June 2017

Dr. L. Vijaya, Distinguished Senior Consultant at the Glaucoma Department and Dr. Pukhraj

Rishi, Senior Consultant at the Vitreo-Retina department, Sankara Nethralaya have been

identified for being honored with this most coveted Fellowship by the Royal College of

Surgeons (Edinburgh).

Dr. Rajeswari Mahadevan has been elected as a member of the ‘Executive Board’, of the

International Association of Contact Lens Educators’ IACLE, the highest forum of the global

body dedicated to education and safe usage of Contact Lens.

professionals who have contributed to society through their service orientation, especially

to the socially and economically backward sections of society, with the ‘Mayan Awards’

every year. This the selection committee chose Dr. Rajesh P. S., Senior Consultant and

Dr. Gajendra Kumar Varma, Associate Consultant, Sankara Nethralaya in recognition of their

impeccable service to the indigent visually impaired in the most remote regions of the

country, through the ‘Mobile Eye Surgical Unit’ (MESU).

Threats & Concerns

Consistent efforts of the various consultants have improved the overall performance

amicably. Utilizations of our State of the art facilities have improved. The revised

compensation structure for staff and consultants were agreed upon and implemented.

Sankara Nethralaya standards of eye care have been accredited with NABH certification and

international recognition. However the increased presence of other eye care institutions

though is a good for the society, may pose a threat and reduce the utilization levels of the

hospital facility.

New Projects

Sankara Nethralaya is looking forward eagerly to the inauguration of its new community

centre in St. Thomas Mount, the expansion of the C U Shah Sankara Nethralaya and the New

Eye Hospital in Surat, Gujarat. With the donation of Suraj Hospital by Shri Surajmal Jain, in

Chetpet, Tiruvannamalai District, Tamil Nadu, Sankara Nethralaya is extending its reach to

the rural areas of North Arcot District in Tamil Nadu. The hospital will be called Suraj Sankara

Nethralaya and will extend both paying and free services to the people of that area.

Human Relations:

The Founder, Dr. S. S. Badrinath and Dr. Vasanthi Badrinath are the real force behind this

great institution, continuously guiding and monitoring the progress of the institution in

every sphere. Their concerted actions in the continuous development of Consultants and

their professional management style with succession plans have started yielding results.

Dr. Girish S. Rao, Medical Director – Administration & Vice-President, MRF has moved

comfortably into the role of heading the administration of the hospital under the guidance

of Dr. S. S. Badrinath. With the support of Chairman Emeritus and the Administration team,

he is working on managing the hospital functions. The Vice Chairman, Dr. T. S. Surendran,

Medical Directors / Senior Consultants Dr. Prema Padmanabhan, Dr. Pramod Bhende and

Dr. L. Vijaya, Dr. J. Biswas all share a common vision as that of the Founder,

Dr. S. S. Badrinath, which helps to continue the successful functioning of the Organisation.

Medical Research FoundationReport on the Financial Statements We have audited the accompanying financial Statements of MEDICAL RESEARCH FOUNDATION which comprises the Balance Sheet as at 31 March, 2018, and the Income and Expenditure account for the year then ended, and a summary of significant accounting policies and other explanatory information.

Management's Responsibility for the Financial Statements Management is responsible for the preparation and presentation of these financial statements that give a true and fair view of the financial position, financial performance of the foundation in accordance with the Accounting Standards. This responsibility includes maintenance of adequate accounting records in accordance with the provisions of the Act for safeguarding the assets of the foundation and for preventing and detecting frauds and other irregularities; selection and application of appropriate accounting policies; making judgments and estimates that are reasonable and prudent; and design, implementation and maintenance of adequate internal financial controls, that were operating effectively for ensuring the accuracy and completeness of the accounting records, relevant to the preparation and presentation of the financial statements that give a true and fair view and are free from material misstatement, whether due to fraud or error.

Auditor's Responsibility Our responsibility is to express an opinion on these financial statements based on our audit. We conducted our audit in accordance with the Standards on Auditing issued by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) .Those Standards require that we comply with ethical requirements and plan and perform the audit to obtain reasonable assurance about whether the financial statements are free from material misstatement. An audit involves performing procedures to obtain audit evidence about the amounts and the disclosures in the financial statements. The procedures selected depend on the auditor’s judgment, including the assessment of the risks of material misstatement of the financial statements, whether due to fraud or error. In making those risk assessments, the auditor considers internal control relevant to the foundation’s preparation and fair presentation of the financial statements in order to design audit procedures that are appropriate in the circumstances but not for the purpose of expressing an opinion on whether the foundation has in place an adequate internal controls system over financial reporting and operating effectiveness of such controls. An audit also includes evaluating the appropriateness of the accounting policies used and the reasonableness of the accounting estimates made by the management, as well as evaluating the overall presentation of the financial statements. We believe that the audit evidence we have obtained is sufficient and appropriate to provide a basis for our audit opinion.

1. The Foundation follows mercantile system of accounting and recognizes Income and Expenditure

on accrual basis.

2. Financial Statements are prepared under historical cost convention.

3. The Fixed Assets of the Foundation are valued at cost less depreciation.

4. Inventories have been valued at Cost.

5. The Foundation’s contribution to various schemes of retirement benefits such as Provident Fund

and Superannuation Fund are charged to the Income and Expenditure Account every year.

6. The expenditure on unavailed leave of employees allowed to be encashed by them as per rules of

the foundation.

7. Gratuity and Leave Encashment provision have been created on the basis of actuarial valuation.

8. Donation and Grants received towards Capital Purchases are accounted under Capital Fund.

9. Donations received for Community Services accounted under Income Statement.

10. There is an Income tax demand of Rs.908 lakhs for the Assessment year 2015-16 which is pending

with the Hon’ble High Court, Chennai

Schedules I to VI of the Balance Sheet and Schedules VII to XI of the Income and Expenditure Account

form an integral part of the Balance Sheet.

Previous year figures have been regrouped wherever necessary to conform to current year’s

classification.

Cataract Catalyst, April 29-30, 2017

Dr Prema Padmanabhan lights the auspicious lamp at the Cataract Catalyst-2017

Cataract Catalyst 2017 is a Sankara Nethralaya initiative to bring together accomplished

cataract surgeons from all across the country to discuss the optimum utilization of recent

technology in the management of complications in cataract surgery. The programme was

inaugurated on 29th April at ITC Grand Chola, Chennai by Dr T S Surendran, Vice Chairman

Sankara Nethralaya and the esteemed faculty members including Dr Jeewan Titiyal,

Dr Mahipal Sachdev and Dr Prema Padmanabhan, pioneers in phacoemulsification in India.

The conference was attended by over 300 ophthalmologists from various specialisations.

According to the Organizing Secretary, Dr Shikha Bassi, “This is the first time that a cataract

conference has integrated ‘the best of the best’ of ophthalmic sub specialities like retina,

cornea and glaucoma from across the country to give an all round perspective to the

management of complications in cataract surgery.

The two-day conference served as a platform for sharing ideas in the form of panel

discussions on the issues related to management dilemmas in complicated situations in

cataract surgery, anaesthesia and the related technological advances. The Cataract

Catalyst Gen Y segment of the conference was designed specifically for training the young

ophthalmologists and was attended by the residents from many government colleges of

Chennai. The skill transfer course of the conference spanned the basics to recent advances

in the cataract surgery. The course for the residents also included inspirational talks by

Dr Jagat Ram, Director, PGI Chandigarh and Dr Mahipal Sachdev, Director, Center for Sight.

The organizers are very grateful to the Sankara Nethralaya management, faculty,

participants, sponsors and well-wishers for a successful meet and look forward to hosting

another such enriching programme next year.

The main highlight of the program was MIGS – Minimally invasive glaucoma surgery. The course had experts from Singapore and London share with us their experience with MIGS, giving a brief overview of the technique, on patient and device selection and give tips to surgeons seasoned in performing trabeculectomy and tubes on the skills they would have to inculcate to transform themselves into MIGS surgeons.

The program was designed to cater to interests of all right from our postgraduate residents and glaucoma fellows to experienced glaucoma practitioners.

The scientific sessions were divided into 5 sessions with each session of 90 mins duration, with case presentations pertaining to the session were presented at the conclusion of each session and ample time for discussions were reserved.

The Tamil Nadu Dr MGR Medical University granted 20 CME credit points under category II for Sangam 2017.

SANGAM was well appreciated for its scientific content, format of the meeting, clinical discussions, and facilities provided. We received warm appreciation from all our attendees.

Seventeenth Dr E Vaithilingam Memorial scientific session – Feb 24 & 25, 2018

The 17th Dr EV Memorial session records a huge attendance

Elite School of Optometry (ESO) has been encouraging optometry research in India for the last few years in many ways. One of the main activities of ESO in this regard is the annual conference on vision science and optometry. Dr. E. Vaithilingam (fondly called Dr. EV) was a pioneer in the field of optometry, who served as the Principal of the Elite School of Optometry from February 1991-March 2001. He was an expert in multiple disciplines – clinical optometry, contact lens and low vision. Dr. E. Vaithilingam was the Head of Low vision services in Sankara Nethralaya and he wrote a book titled “Practice of Low Vision” which helps all the students and practitioners in the field of Low vision till date. He was an ardent researcher and pioneer with more than 100 publications to his credit. He was the first Indian to become a fellow of International Association of Contact Lens Educators (FIACLE) and to be honored as Fellow of American Academy of Optometry (FAAO). In 2002, in memory of Dr. E. Vaithilingam, ESO initiated a national scientific session to encourage optometrists and optometry students from across the country to present their research work. Every year, the quality and quantity of presentations have been increasing exponentially.

This year, ESO conducted the 17th Dr EV Memorial scientific session on the 24th and 25th February, 2018 that received an overwhelming response with participation from twenty optometry academic institutions, seventeen ophthalmic hospitals and 631 eye care practitioners from all over the country. Dr. Mitchell Scheiman, Dean of Research and Director of Graduate studies at Salus University, Pennsylvania was the keynote speaker for the event.

Dr. Mitchell Scheiman who has authored over 200 scientific papers and has served as a chair for the NEI funded clinical trials on Convergence insufficiency is known for his contribution through his book “Clinical management of Binocular vision” that serves as the textbook for Binocular vision across the world. He is a renowned clinician researcher and is a mentor and role model for many in this field. With his enthralling presence, the 2 days of event did receive a humongous response from students and practitioners.

On the 23rd February, the day started with the pre-conference workshop on “Clinical pearls

and tips to improve binocular vision diagnosis” conducted by Dr. Mitchell Scheiman at the

Jayshree Venkataraman Auditorium, Sivasailam Block , Sankara Nethralaya. With over 100

participants, the workshop inculcated clinical pearls and tips that form the foundation for

binocular vision testing and diagnosis. With a simplistic approach to the framework of BV

testing, the workshop helped the delegates to take home valuable messages and skills for

their clinical practice. The workshop also had a rigorous hands-on training of clinical

procedures in BV with 10 facilitators, coordinated by Dr. Mitchell Scheiman & Dr. Jameel

Rizwana Hussaindeen.

The second pre-conference workshop on “Empathetic communication for clinicians” was

conducted by Dr Sumathi Narayanan - President, Creative Communication & Management

Care and faculty of ESO, moderated by Dr. Rashima Asokan. This workshop is initiated since

2015 and continues to inspire the budding clinicians with Dr. Sumathi’s three decades of

expertise in the arena of communication.

The evening symposium on the 24th February, had exciting events that would remain as remarkable milestones in the history of ESO. One such event was the launch of a learning application named as “ECSELO – ESO's Case Scenario-based learning in Optometry”, lead by Ms. Najiya and Ms. Ashwini, Research associates at Sankara Nethralaya and probably the youngest editors in the Optometry world. EcSelO is an interactive mobile application that covers the key points to approach 45 common clinical conditions in optometric practice. This application was conceptualized with the help of Mr. Chandramouli –Head of IT Services, Sankara Nethralaya and executed with the support of Chennai publishing services and Prag IT. This application will serve thousands of optometry students and faculty all over the country and will continue to expand with more chapters and learning content. The second highlight was the launch of a website for color vision deficient individuals and the Dalton’s pseudo-isochromatic plates, a quick screening tool for color vision deficiency. This initiative was led by Mr. Mohan, an alumnus of ESO, mentored by Mr. Maruthachalam Manthiram – Director of Shrusty Global solutions and Dr. Krishna Kumar R – Principal, ESO. These two initiatives did inspire hundreds of young optometrists gathered during the symposium to contribute to the Optometry community in meaningful ways.

Apart from conventional scientific abstracts, to encourage evidence based practice and to motivate the clinicians to build the researcher instinct, the clinician to researcher sessions have been introduced since 2014. This year, 12 clinician to researcher presentations were shortlisted and 7 of these presentations pertinent to binocular vision were presented during the evening symposium. The evening then continued to move on with the Binocular vision potpourri where three interesting cases were presented by Dr. Jameel Rizwana

Hussaindeen – Head of Binocular vision clinic, Sankara Nethralaya- moderated by Dr. Mitchell Scheiman and Dr. Meenakshi Swanminathan – Director, Academics, Sankara Nethralaya. The potpourri covered the management aspects of three common clinical case presentations with an evidence based approach moderated by the 2 eminent panel members. The evening on the whole received an overwhelming response and feedback.

The 17th Dr E Vaithilingam memorial scientific session on the 25th February had a poignant start with the divine rendition by Ms. Lohitha Viswanathan, and lighting of Kuthuvilakku by the dignitaries present. Following this, Dr. Krishna Kumar R, Principal, ESO delivered the welcome address on behalf of Dr. Girish Rao, Medical Director and touched upon the highlights of Optometry practice in the institution and welcomed the gathering. Dr. Rajeswari, Assistant Professor, ESO shared about the progress and history of EV Memorial scientific sessions. The event continued with sharing of fond memories of Dr. E Vaithilingam, by Ms. Gomathy Ravi – Daughter of Dr. EV, Dr. Yadav KK, former colleague of Dr. EV at the Banaras Hindu University and Dr. T.S. Surendran- Vice Chairman, Medical Research Foundation.

The inauguration event was followed by the most awaited part of the day, the keynote lecture by Dr. Mitchell Scheiman. Dr. Jameel Rizwana Hussaindeen introduced Dr. Scheiman and recalled her acquaintance and able mentorship under Dr. Scheiman then presented his keynote lecture on “Convergence Insufficiency treatment trial (CITT) - Past, Present and Future”. The keynote lecture covered the review of research done by the CITT study group over the past decade and how the future holds promise for research in this field. Dr. Scheiman’s expertise in this field was very well appreciated and applauded by the delegates. It must have been a lifetime experience for the delegates listening from the horse’s mouth.

Every year, the quality and quantity of presentations have been increasing exponentially. This year, about 114 scientific presentations in various categories of free paper, e-poster, and clinician to researcher sessions were presented. The Go-Green initiative of e-posters did receive a good feedback from all the delegates as it saved the cost of printing, and reduced the need to carry it.

Scientific conferences happen all over the world year after year but the conversion of the conference presentations to publications are meagerly low. Converting the conference work to publication completes the successful journey and so recognizing this is as well becomes important! At the 17th Dr EV memorial scientific session, 8 optometrists who were successful in this scientific journey were recognized.

As every year, this year witnessed three innovative forums for students and practitioners to showcase their community connect and innovations.

The first was the display of posters by institution to showcase their social accountability. Nine institutions from across the country who were shortlisted proudly presented their community contributions. All the institution representatives were honored with the Optometrist community vision screening kit, sponsored by Orbis, India. The next was “Share your story”. this was again to showcase the community connect, where the institution’s community responsibility changed the life of a person with visual impairment. Two case stories shortlisted from over 40 entries were awarded during the event. The third event was the display of innovative prototypes applicable for binocular vision diagnosis and vision therapy, by undergraduate Optometry students. Eleven entries were shortlisted and two best innovations were awarded.

Beginning 2013, the EVM scientific session supports students through travel grants and this

year, 21 final year Optometry students from outside Chennai received the ESO- Essilor

student travel grant awards. As a token of appreciation to maximum participation by

students from SRM University school of Optometry and Sri Ramachandra Medical College

Optometry school, ESO's internally illuminated pocket vision screener was given to the

heads of the schools, to be utilized for their community vision programs.

The Scientific Session came to an end with closing remarks by Mr. Jothi Balaji , Senior

Manager, Sankara Nethralaya. The event was ably supported by sponsors Mr. Subashish

Choudary, Soham eye care and Silverline Contact lens laboratories. The e-abstract book

introduced during 2016 is successfully taken forward this year as well
