Our health is in our hands“Health is wealth,” says an age old adage. But more and more wealth isneeded to look after health especially for Medical Care. We all live longer, weall aspire to keep healthy, therefore more and more resources andinformation are of crucial importance for old age with dignity and as muchself reliance as possible. Most of the readers of this special magazine haveroots in the Indian subcontinent and more probably with Gujarat.

There is plenty of useful information inside on healthy living as well ashow celebrities look after their health and especially their figures. Commonsense precautions in diet and lifestyle are enormously important and helpfuland I would particularly like to draw your attention to pages 12 and 14 as wellas pages 16 and 17. Those who live in the UK are very fortunate to have oneof the best health services, which are universally acclaimed.

At the same time, for those who need prompt treatment at the earliest forsome acute ailments, those who have “Indian blood” in their veins and haveparticular affinity with traditional diet as well as with language issue forcommunication, are very often considering health care options in India.Gujarat is becoming a preferred Medical tourism destination.

The combination of prompt and advanced medical facilities and servicesat competitive pricing and additional exotic natural bounties has led to Indiabecoming an ideal destination for Medical Tourists. A large number ofpatients from UK, USA and other countries, look to India and Gujarat inparticular, because they experience possible delays in the countries of theirresidence for some treatments.

For example, a UK patient, a violin repair craftsmen from Bradford wastold by his doctor that the waiting period for his heart bypass would be sixmonths or he could have a private treatment for £19,000. He opted to fly toIndia and the total cost for transport and medical care was much less thanhalf and it was done promptly.

The dynamic Chief Minister of Gujarat Narendra Modi, has successfullypositioned his state as a health care destination. Ranked among the top 5destinations in the world, India plays host to more than 150,000 MedicalTourists ever year. A CII-McKinsey report expects Medical Tourism sector inIndia to experience astonishing growth rate of 30% per year and surpass $2billion this year. The World Travel and Medical Tourism Council have forecastthat Medical Tourism will grow at a fast rate for next 12 years. Medical Care, minor or major in India and especially in Gujarat, is available with ethical andprofessional standards. In case of any complaints the government promisesto act promptly to maintain and even improve the standards which are verywelcome. The profession is also well aware of its responsibilities.

Dear readers, I sincerely wish you a very long and healthy life. I pray thatyou yourself take command of your daily life (diet, exercise, positive attitudeas well as, all aspects of lifestyle). Yes we can. Up to a certain limit, we canlook after ourselves and also there are options available for help whereneeded – of course for those who can afford it.

Be positive, the rest will follow.

Yours sincerely,CB Patel

India is one amongst the strong contenders in fray to

attract people across the globe not just for the purpose

to see its heritage sites but also use its services in

healthcare which has gained repute due to availability of

skilled medical professionals. A good blend of top-class

medical expertise at attractive rates and prompt

services is helping a growing number of Indian corporate

hospitals attract foreign patients, including people from

developed nations such as the UK and the US. India is

pitted against Thailand, Singapore and other Asian

countries, which have good hospitals, salubrious climate

and tourist destinations. While Thailand and Singapore

with their advanced medical facilities and built-in

medical tourism options have been drawing foreign

patients since some time now, the rapidly expanding

Indian corporate hospital sector has been able to make

a big impression in the market recently.

Gujarat has the potential to become the gateway for

medical tourism in India. On an average 450,000 tourists

visit the state for obtaining medical care. With the kind

of capacity building lined up for health care sector here

in coming days we expect Gujarat to surpass Singapore

in medical tourism," said Jaynarayan Vyas, state minister

for health and tourism at a seminar organised by FICCI.

Gujarat to set up Medi cities to boost medical tourism

To attract people from all over the world for medical

treatment, Gujarat Government has invited expressions

of interest for setting up of Medi cities, which will

provide super-specialty health care. It also seeks

investments in IT services for health. The way medical

and paramedical colleges are proposed to come up in

the state no doubt Gujarat will emerge as a leading

health care tourism destination in coming days.

The hospitals of Gujarat have state of art facilities

and excellent brainpower covering experienced medical

fraternity. The combination of world class infrastructure

and medical fraternity make Gujarat one of the best

medical tourism hubs. Gujarat is one of the most

industrialized states in India and 30% of Indian doctors

in USA are having roots in Gujarat.

With world class health facilities, zero waiting time

and most importantly one tenth of medical costs spent

in the US or UK, Gujarat is becoming the preferred

medical tourist destination and also matching the

services available in Delhi, Maharashtra and Andhra

Pradesh.

The state has various advantages and the large

NRG population living in the UK and USA is one of the

major ones. Out of the 20 million-plus Indians spread

across the globe, Gujaratis boasts 6 million, which is

around 30 per cent of the total NRI population. The

specialized clinics and hospitals especially in the private

sector is gaining popularity through word of mouth, and

this is contributing to the inflow of medical tourists.

Among the other advantages are the highly qualified

specialists in the field of Ophthalmology, Urology,

Embryology, Orthodontics, Oncology and Orthopedics.

The facilities and equipment available at the hospitals

are comparable with the best available in the country

and even in the world.

Apart from low cost and best world class medical

facilities, the hospitals are offering pick and drop

services, ambulance services, telemedical service,

insurance, online appointments etc. Such health

facilities are attracting the patients from Africa, America

and the UK where waiting period is

between 6 to 18 months.

The major factor for increasing

medical tourists to the state is the

low costs for cardiac surgery,

angiography, joint replacements,

radiation and other medical

services, which are one tenth of

the costs incurred abroad. For

instance, joint replacement costs

125,000 to 150,000 in US. In

Gujarat and the same surgery is

done for $20,000. Similarly a

cardiac surgery is done for $4000 in

Gujarat and the same is done for

$25,000 (apprx.) in the US.

Similarly In-Vitro Fertilization costs one-fifth in Gujarat

when compared to USA.

Medical tourism is a recent concept in India and

Gujarat has been able to match world standards in

almost all areas of treatment.

Global healthcare companies vie for space in Gujarat

A number of leading global healthcare brands are

lining up to manufacture from Gujarat. After Vicks and

Colgate Palmolive, US-based Abbott Laboratories plans

to set up a manufacturing unit in Gujarat to produce its

nutraceutical range- Ensure and PediaSure at Jhagadia.

Abbott has acquired 45 acres of land for the plant, which

will be its second unit in India. It will be set up with an

initial investment of `3.60 billion.

Israel's Teva Pharmaceutical

Industries along with the US-based

Procter & Gamble is setting up a `5

billion plant to manufacture its Vicks

range of products in Sanand. Scotland-

based pharma and life sciences

companies are also eyeing Gujarat for an

entry into the Indian market. Mark Dolan,

country manager, Scottish Development

International attributes the trend to the

quick materialisation of discussions.

"Gujarati and Scottish businesses hold

many common values and attitudes.

Every opportunity to meet and discuss

business is maximised with discussion

quickly getting down to detail." Dolan met a couple of

pharmaceutical and lifesciences companies in

Ahmedabad. Singapore-headquartered Biosensors

International, too, plans to start manufacturing from

Gujarat. The medical device company specializes in

developing, manufacturing and licensing technologies

for cardiological procedures.

Amneal Pharmaceuticals has set up a formulation unit

along with a research and development centre near

Changodar and plans to start operations out of its facility.

New Jersey based Apicore LLC, manufacturer of

specialty active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) have

also expressed their plans to set up base in the state.

"A foreign company looks at state government's

investment friendly policies, labour availability and

customer base in the region. Gujarat is a perfect

destination for foreign pharma companies as the state

offers single-window approval, low cost land, skilled

labour and is a hub for pharma and generic medicines,"

said Ankit Suri, associate vice president, Tecnova India,

a management consulting firm specialized in designing

'India entry strategy' for international players. According

to HG Koshia, commissioner of Food and Drugs Control

Administration (FDCA), the state has seen a surge in

enquiry from international pharmaceutical companies

after the introduction of the e-governance initiative.

Gujarat is the first state to announce a healthcare

tourism policy.

Amarjit Singh, commissioner (health), Gujarat

government, said the state had been pioneering in this

sector and has set a benchmark for other states.

“Gujarat is the first state to have announced a

healthcare tourism policy. We have also signed around

eight MoUs worth `20.92 billion. Gujarat has very well

realised its role and has been doing its best to develop

this sector,” said Singh.

Gujarat Health City

Gujarat Health City is an idea floated by Kosansh

Health Solutions to give instant health options and

luxurious living to everyone. A Health City plan that will

have Retirement Homes, Hospitals and modern

technology enabled and environment friendly luxury

living for Seniors and other patient families.

A team of entrepreneurs of a top business school in

Ahmedabad is working with Kosansh Health Solutions

to draft a proposal which will be later sent to Gujarat

Government for their inputs and approval. ◙

Surrogate mothers of Anand, Gujarat, have delivered

countless headlines in India by being part of a

pioneering initiative to rent wombs to childless

couples across the globe. They were also the stars of

the Oprah Winfrey show.

Although split data is not available for each state,

according to the NARI report, Gujarat recorded the

highest number of surrogacy in 2006, with 110 cases.

Nonetheless, a WebMD report dubs this

phenomenon “reproductive tourism” (similar to

medical tourism) of India and reveals that surrogacy

costs about $12,000 in India, including all medical

expenses and the surrogate’s fee, whereas in the US,

the same (in-vitro fertilization) would cost up to

$70,000 to an infertile couple!

Thus the biggest advantage for infertile couples in

getting their treatment done in India is not just cost

saving (which of course is substantial) but also an

easy availability of womb-donors who can’t be so

easily recruited in the West. The cost consideration

apart, childless couples across the globe choose India

because of the refined cultural background of the

middle-class surrogate mothers. Dr Nayna Patel of

Anand has brought about surrogacy boom in India.

Total Knee Replacement has been

practiced for over half a century

now. The number of people

undergoing this life changing surgery

has increased exponentially in the last

decade in all parts of the world.

Awareness and acceptance of the procedure are purely

based on gratifying results. Implants have evolved over

the years and engineering finesse is smoothening out a

lot of the problems which were faced in the early years.

These days no operation theatre list is complete without

some joint replacement surgery.

Surgeons in India were struggling to sell the idea of

knee replacement to patients a decade ago. There has

been a sea change since, with patients of all age groups

coming to doctors asking to undergo the surgery at the

earliest. The incidence of osteoarthritis seems to be

increasing with an increased pool of elderly population.

However, younger patients are flocking to out-patient

departments with symptoms affecting their day to day

activities. Approximately 80,000 Total Knee

Replacements are being undertaken in India every year.

Annually there is an addition of 20% to this figure.

Knee replacement in India is very successful. Latest

techniques are used to ensure complete return to

normal activities at the earliest. Gender specific knee

replacements, partial replacements and high flex total

knees are routinely done. The design of the high flex

implants closely replicate normal knee. Rotating knee

replacement implants can swing backward and forward

thus giving the knee flexibility to move forward and

outward.

High flexion gives patients the freedom to the

extent that they can even squat cross legged and sit on

the floor.

Minimally invasive surgery is performed, which

decreases post-operative pain and ensures speedy

recovery. Computer

assisted surgery using

a specialised

navigation system

increases accuracy of

the bone cuts, better

alignment of the joint

and limb, decreases

bleeding and operative

time to increase the

longevity of the

artificial joint.

In computer

assisted Knee

Replacement, the

computer guides the

surgeon in precisely

planning the exact amount

and angle of bone to be

removed during surgery.

This, in conventional

method is done by simple

eye-balling.

This technology helps

to perform the surgery

through small incision

(Minimally Invasive

Surgery) with 100%

precision, eliminating

"Human Error" during

surgery and helps in

perfectly aligning and

balancing of knee joint

(with accuracy of 0.5 mm

and 0.5 degrees). It also helps in increasing implant

longevity (20-30 years). Patients experience a feeling of

freedom of ease of movement as their own natural joint.

These days patients are coming to India from all over the

world for even technically demanding revision surgeries.

Whereas a knee replacement costs up to 10,000

pounds in UK, $65,000 in USA, in India it costs only

$7,500 to $13,000. No wonder the number of Non-

resident Indians and foreigners coming to India for their

surgeries is steadily increasing.

India is becoming the ultimate destination for knee

surgeries as it has top class Doctors who have

experience of performing over 10,000 joint replacement

surgeries; World Class Hospitals having the latest

technology like Computer Navigation, 64 slice CT, High

end MRI, Neoro-physiology, etc; finest quality implants,

prosthesis and consumables imported from the best

international companies; specialised physiotherapy and

rehabilitation services. Our patients return to work

between two to three weeks. Patients are generally

kept in hospitals a bit longer after their surgeries. This

gives them a chance to recover their health in a safe

environment. This ultimately helps hasten the recovery

process. The co-morbid medical problems are also

better and adequately managed in the hospital setting.

Doctors and nurses generally give a lot more time to

their patients in India in the post operative period.

Knee replacement makes it possible for patients to

get back to driving, working and an independent way of

life. This is the demand of society today with an ever

increasing number of nuclear families. People are

becoming conscious of the potential side effects of long

term pain medicine use and instead opting to rather

have knee replacement surgery and returning to a

productive life. ◙

Healthy living doesn’t have to be hard; it was never

created to be. But it does require a small amount of

commitment and a big love for being refreshed.

∙ Drink 8-10 Glasses of Water a Day- This cleans out

toxins and helps the body function much better.

∙ Add Movement to Your Life- Park further so you

walk between the car and the stores, take steps instead

of elevators, and take longer routes to your desk.

∙ Eat a large variety of fresh produce or supplement

your diet with vitamins and minerals.

∙ Take Time to Relax- Allow you to de-stress at least

once a day.

∙ Sleep 6-10 hours a night (or until you are well

rested).

∙ Wash your hands often. Minimally wash hands

before eating and after using the restroom.

∙ Laugh- Let humor enter your life - one of the

easiest ways of good health.

Healthy living on the go

If you are a busy entrepreneur or employee who is

usually on the go and doesn’t have a lot of time, but

want to keep yourself healthy:

8 Exercise on the go- If you are doing lot of

deskwork, get up every 30 minutes and move a bit. Do

some desk exercise. Take stairs. Get your blood flowing

and your muscles moving. Even if it is just a walk at

lunch time it will help both your mind and your body.

Breathing hard, moving your body, and getting away

from the work environment for a few minutes, allows

you to wake up and gives you a new perspective and

solutions to your daily tasks.

∙ If you are always facing the computer screen, give

a break to your eyes by closing it for a while. Fluttering

it and divert them every few minutes.

∙ Drink herbal teas/nuts/juice. Do not match junk

food and work-mates, as you will tend to eat more. Take

a break, it only needs to be 10 minutes, but make sure

you step away from the computer, the phone and

everything else for a little mini-break to have a cuppa or

eat your lunch. You’ll feel so much better if you do.

∙ Take a powernap! 10-20 minutes are usually more

than enough. Studies show that our energy drops most

after lunch. A short nap will help you recover. You’re not

losing time, but gaining it

∙ You wouldn’t run a machine 24/7 without some

preventive maintenance. Taking time off, or at least the

occasional long weekend, can be done if you’re

organised and often makes you more effective and

efficient

∙ Deep breathing - inhale and count up to 5 seconds,

hold it for a few seconds, and release slowly. Exchange

of oxygen and carbon dioxide is one of the best things

we can do for our blood and cells.

∙ Hydrate – This is very important. If you are only

drinking water when you feel thirst, you are most likely

dehydrated. Drink at least half your body weight in

pounds, in ounces. (eg. if you are 140lbs, drink at least

70 ounces of water daily). Coffee, bottled juices, soft

drinks and alcohol do not help

∙ Peer support is a great way to share your

challenges with like-minded colleagues. The feeling of

being “lonely at the top” may sound clichéd but it

affects us all from time to time.Always keep a punching bag in office. So that, in

moments of stress, you can punch the bag instead of

punching your co-workers.

Our body is our temple, and we need to take care of

it to have a healthy life. Think of your body as your

physical shell to take you through life. If you repeatedly

abuse it with unhealthy food, your shell wears out

quickly. While you may look okay on the outside, on the

inside, your arteries are getting clogged up with

cholesterol and arterial plaque. That’s not a pretty sight!

Life is beautiful and you don’t want to bog yourself

down with unnecessary health problems. Today, your

vital organs (kidney, heart, lungs, gall bladder, liver,

stomach, intestines, etc) may be working well, but they

may not be tomorrow. Don’t take your good health today

for granted.

∙ Barefoot walking/running. There have been many

proven positive benefits of barefoot walking/running,

from better posture, less stress for your feet, less stress

for your joints, etc.

∙ Purge negative people from your life. Positive

mental health is an important part of a healthy life. You

don’t need toxic people in your life. If you feel that a

friend is overly critical or negative, then let him/her go.

∙ Avoid trigger foods. Trigger foods are the foods

that make you go berserk and binge like crazy after you

eat them.

Go organic. Organic food tends to cost more, but

hey – would you rather save some money and feed your

body with pesticides or pay a few extra dollars for a

cleaner, healthier body?

Go for low calorie, low fat alternatives. There are

many low-fat/non-fat alternatives today – from yogurts,

to salad dressing, soy milk, spreads, ice cream, etc.

Check out this comprehensive

list: Lower Calorie, Lower Fat

Alternatives.

Go on a vegetarian diet.

Going vegetarian doesn’t

necessarily lead to better health,

because there are many

unhealthy vegetarian food out

there (fried food, white carb

laden diets, etc). On that note,

there are many proven health

benefits of a vegetarian diet.

Become a vegan and see the

positive effects on mental and

physical health. Try it out for 21

days and see how it works out

for you. Get started now.

Go on a vegan diet. A

vegetarian is someone who

does not consume animal

products. A vegan is someone

who doesn’t consume animal or animal-derived

products. This means no dairy, honey, cheese, milk, etc.

So in that sense, it’s seemingly stricter, but it brings

about even more positive benefits on top of a vegetarian

diet.

Prepare your meals. When you prepare your meals,

you control what goes into them.

Learn to say no. Don’t feel like you’ve to eat just

because you’re out with your friends, or because other

people offer you food. Simply say no and say you’re not

hungry if you don’t feel like eating.

∙ Live life with purpose. Positive health starts from

within! Are you living a life of meaning? Are you living in

line with your purpose? Start it now and you can be

happier.

∙ Improve your posture. Good posture improves

your breathing and makes you look smarter and

attractive.

∙ Cut out soda and caffeine. Soda is unhealthy,

causes weight gain and an artificial stimulant. Ditch your

soda and go for plain water or fresh fruit juices instead!

Don’t drink alcohol. Like caffeine, alcohol is a

diuretic. Not only that, alcohol is repeatedly proven to

have negative effects on our body and health –

impacting the proper functioning of our brain, liver,

lungs, and other major organs.

Stop smoking. It has been extensively proven that

smoking is detrimental to health, severely increasing

the risk of lung cancer, kidney cancer, esophageal cancer

(of our gullet), heart attack, and more. Smoking “light”

cigarettes does not decrease health risks.

∙ Exercise good dental hygiene. Not only does good

hygiene make you a lot more desirable, it is linked with

better health. Brush your teeth twice a day, rinse your

mouth after each meal and floss your teeth at night.

∙ Join classes. Dance classes, aerobics classes,

tennis classes, ballroom dancing, scuba diving, wake

boarding courses, are all places to start off with. Going

there also lets you socialize with a whole new group of

people. ◙

Gagan Narang became the first Indian to win a medal

at the London Olympics. Narang’s potential was

never in doubt, but he always seemed to miss the cut

by just a little distance. So how

did he hit the bull’s eye this

time around? Shooting may

look like a sport that doesn’t

require a lot of physical

fitness or agility but that is

not true. Lately he had

started taking his fitness

more seriously. He repeated

the same exercises,

progressively increasing

resistance.He consciously

went on a strict weight loss

regime. More than anything

shooting is a mind game and

that requires training as well.

He practises yoga and

pranayama. He stays away

from what he calls the

‘detrimental habits for shooters.’

Besides avoiding smoking and

drinking, the shooter also avoids

coffee because it can frazzle the

nervous system.

Gagan Narang : Focus fitBollywood's badshah Shah Rukh Khan looks so slim

with six pack abs is because he does 100 push

ups and 60 pull ups daily to maintain his abs. He

exercises up to four times a week

and also uses weights for half

an hour. The actor, however,

suggests that any exercise

that makes one sweat can be

followed.

The celebrity also has a few

diet secrets. Shah Rukh Khan

eats rice/bread, eats grilled

food and drinks lot of

water. The actor doesn't

drink alcohol and strictly

avoids desserts. SRK

follows a strict diet plan

and doesn't eat snacks

between meals. He also

advises his fans to slowly

cut down junk foods and

gradually nullify them in their

diet. Khan advises a 50

minute exercise and asks to

drink at least eight to ten

glasses of water for the body

to be well hydrated.

Shah Rukh: Fit at 40

Kareena Kapoor credits her waif-like body to a

balanced diet and a strict yoga regime as well. The

once curvaceous actress denies reports of starving

herself, she insists her body is the result of hard work

and healthy eating. She has religiously stuck to her

diet and is feeling more energetic, healthier and sexy.

“She wants her fans to know

that she has achieved her

body, over a period of time, by

being dedicated and

disciplined about her eating

and fitness habits. Kareena’s

dietician also reveals the actor’s

diet, “She has been eating

parathas, momos, cheese,

pastas, bananas. Foods which

most people perceive as

‘fattening’.” Kareena

practices Bikram Yoga, also

known as hot yoga. It is

performed in a room that has

40% humidity and is raised to

105 degrees F. The one and a

half hour session includes a

couple of breathing routines

and 26 different yoga

postures.

Kareena Kapoor: Zero figureIf ever there has been someone who could aptly fit

the nomenclature "evergreen", it is Sachin Tendulkar,

the cricketer par excellence. How does he do it? Food

and Tendulkar, Yeah, they go together, like runs and

also gaining momentum in our

these procedures and therapies in hands of our doctors

match the best in the world!

India: An Emerging Healthcare Hub in South-Asia

2 Major Areas of consideration for Healthcare ProvidersMedical Services: Medical tourists and foreign

patients expect the highest possible quality of care;

having travelled great distances to seek world-class

doctors and hospitals, skilled nurses and paramedical

staffs, state-of-the-art technology and medical

equipment, and accreditation ensures quality of care and

patient safety.

Non-Medical Services: Patients seeking overseas

treatment typically travel with their family members,

they are increasingly demanding a total consumer

experience even when seeking medical treatment; food

& beverage, hospitality, translators, airport pick up &

drop, visa assistance, Fixed price surgery,

attendant/companion comfort, Wi-Fi and internet

access, friendly atmosphere, sightseeing and other

auxiliary services.

Gujarat becomes the preferred medical tourism

destination: The state has various advantages and the

large NRG population living in the UK and USA is one of

the major ones. Out of the 20 million-plus Indians

spread across the globe, Gujaratis comprise 6 million,

which is around 30 per cent of the total NRI population.

Non -resident Gujaratis, popularly known as NRGs,

coming to India for personal and medical visits are also

marketing the health services available in the state.

Gujarat has potential to become the gateway for

medical tourism in India. ◙

Ministry of Tourism

recently announced that India's

Medical Tourism market is growing at

an annual rate of 25 per cent and is

expected to become a US $ 2-billion

business by end of this financial year.

Last year approx 200,000 patients came to India for

medical treatment. That number is growing at 30 -40%

annually. Government of India predicts that India's

health-care industry as a whole could grow 13% per

annum for the next six years, with the inflow of

international patients, industry analysts say it is growing

at 30% annually.

As we all know, India has emerged as one of the few

countries that have beaten the economic meltdown and

gloomy recession and strengthened its position as a

robust economy in the world. Amongst many of her

growth sectors which have propelled the economy,

health care remains a major contributor. Medical tourism

has gained momentum in India over the past few years, a

trend underpinned by the emergence of new high-quality

healthcare service providers and low-cost advantage.

A large number of overseas Indians and foreigners

are visiting India, a very attractive health destination,

apart from tourism. According to CII McKinsey report on

Medical Tourism, India has the potential to attract 1

million tourists per annum, which could contribute up to

US$ 5 billion to the economy.

“India offers vast range of medical treatments - from

simple dental procedures to the complex cardiac

surgeries. Patients can save 60 to 90% of their

treatment costs by undergoing treatment in India.”

Forget the Bypass surgery or Knee Replacement

operations which we have been doing in large numbers,

the newer and costlier treatments like Bone marrow

transplant, Liver transplant and Stem cell therapy are

Woman walks in marathons aftertwo major strokes

Jennifer Beehan’s life changed in an instant. Just one

month after fulfilling her lifelong dream of becoming

an RCMP officer, she was at a kickboxing class when

she suffered a stroke.

A nurse who was also taking the class knew to call

9-1-1.

Just 23 hours later, Beehan, then 27, had a second

stroke. She was told by her doctors that she would

never walk again.

“Had someone told me I would graduate from

RCMP Depot at 27, and in less than a month be

paralyzed because of two strokes, I would have thought

they were crazy,” she says.

The Halifax native had been young and healthy, with

no family history of heart disease or stroke. Looking

back, she says the only indication that something was

wrong had been a headache she’d suffered for about a

week before her strokes. She thought the pain was due

to not eating or drinking enough while at work, but a

neurologist later told her that headache was actually a

warning sign.

Despite her doctor’s diagnosis, Beehan vowed that

she would regain the use of her legs. Within just eight

months of suffering her strokes, she defied all the odds.

Not only can she now walk, but in 2010 she completed

5 km walks in the Bluenose Marathon and Johnny Miles

Marathon.

Beehan, now 29, is tackling her road to recovery by

surrounding herself with positive people and by

maintaining a positive outlook on life. While she doesn’t

have plans to participate in another race in the

immediate future, she’s keeping busy with work and

rehabilitation. “Instead of looking at what you cannot do

or do not have in life, focus on what you can do and

what you have,” Beehan says. “I am just happy to be

alive.”

Let Jennifer’s story inspire you to Make Death Wait

– go for a walk today and record it as a healthy action.

Tips For Healthy Cooking

∙ Use skim or low fat varieties of all dairy products

(milk, yogurt, cheese, butter, cream, ice cream)

∙ If a recipe needs some oil/butter/ghee, use olive or

canola oil in small quantity. Make a habit of brushing or

spraying the oil in the pan instead of pouring.

∙ Use non sticking utensils for cooking.

∙ First heat the utensil, then add (preferably spray)

oil. A heated pan spreads the oil better.

∙ Substitute baking, barbecue or grill for frying, if

possible.

∙ Avoid reheating of the food as it destroys the

nutritive value of foods.

∙ Wash the vegetables with water containing

potassium permanganate to remove fertilisers and

pesticides. Then rinse them with clean water.

∙ Do not overcook the vegetables as the more they

are cooked, the less nutrition you will get from them.

∙ Onion should be cut and kept for at least 15

minutes before serving as oxidation helps quercetin, an

important phytochemical and antioxidant to get

activated.

∙ Look the labels on the food products carefully.

Look for labels of low fat or reduced fat.

∙ Don't be carried away by the words 'No

Cholesterol' on labels. Majority of vegetable products

are cholesterol free. It is the fat content of the item

which matters.

∙ Avoid conventional fast foods. Salads,

sandwiches, fresh fruits are best fast foods.

∙ When you go to a hotel, give instructions to add

only very small quantities of oils for cooking.

∙ Eat only when you feel hungry.

∙ Avoid eating while watching TV. You eat a lot and

you don't know while watching TV.

∙ Never use pots and pans made of lead or

aluminium. Lead can lead to severe digestive disorders.

Aluminium vessels can cause high levels of aluminium

in the brain tissue that may lead to Alzheimer's disease.
