However, a current law prevents Medicare from negotiating with drug companies to lower prices. But rather Medicare must purchase drugs at the retail value, even though other groups, including other countries, are able to negotiate lower prices for drugs. Giving the Secretary of Health and Human Services the authority to negotiate prices for prescription drugs covered by Medicare could potentially save billions of dollars.
