What happens when agility turns into inactivity?Expecting mothers delight in feeling their baby’s movements in the uterus, because they know it means: the baby is feeling well. Normally developed children and adolescents have a natural impulse to be active from birth, which makes it almost impossible to keep still for any length of time. People with a physical disability are frequently unable to work off that natural need for motion. But long periods of lack of exercise quickly set off a vicious circle. Strength and condition suffer and the muscles begin to become wasted. In case of additional spastic cramps the tendons and ligaments are shortened, which lead to contractures and mal-position. The consequence is that men women and children move less frequently, which only

accelerates the process. A cycle that has a negative effect on all things of everyday life (hygiene, dressing, eating, …). It is essential to start in good time to cancel these drastic effects. And there are very effective ways of moving without a great deal of effort.

44How can I bring more movement into my life?

Better today than tomorrowIf you wish you can start right away! Physicians and thera-pists have had a positive influence on your general condition or have possibly restored lost capabilities. At the end of this intensive clinical therapy phase it is essential to maintain or even increase the reached “level” at home. It is possi-ble, and that should be your goal. Physician, physiotherapy, medicinal therapy and apparatus therapy are a sensible supplement. Therapeutic targets, such as the avoidance of contractures can best be achieved e.g. by physiotherapy, but strength and condition can most easily be increased by daily apparatus therapy.

Therapy without side effectsActive-passive motion trainers such as the THERA-vital can be used at home as often as you wish and as long as you feel well. Negative side effects must not be anticipated if used properly. You stay in your wheelchair/chair, fasten in your legs and press the green START button – and off you go. The motor gently and passively moves your legs. As soon as you wish you can actively participate, even with low residual muscle strength. You can watch your muscle activity on the colour monitor – separately for the right and left leg. Resistance, speed and rotational direction can be individually adapted to your needs. A highly sensitive

Safety – without any compromisesAs far as safety is concerned, THERA-vital can hardly be beaten. The best example for this is the voice-controlled safety cut-off installed as standard for many years. In many situations, particularly when training the torso, this STOP substitute offers additional safety for the user. A further example is the sensitive anti-cramp switch – which can be individually adapted for each user to the type (extensor/flexor spasti-city) and strength of the cramps.
