BerlinThe fabled capital of Germany and one of the great cities of the world with a cultural legacy second to none Berlin is also known as the capital of Nazi Germany and the scene of the final cataclysmic battle to defeat Hitler.

MunichHome to the world renowned ‘Oktoberfest’, the annual beer festival, it was here in 1923 that the young Nazi Party made its first attempt at gaining power with the infamous ‘Beer Hall’ Putsch. We visit the site of the putsch and lunch in the famous Hofbräuhaus am Platzl, arguably the most famous beer house in the world.

HamburgRemembered as the first ‘firestorm’ city of the Second War, it is here that we revisit the policies that determined Allied bombing strategy and visit a memorial to those who perished.

NurembergBecause of its rich religious and mythical history Nurnberg was chosen by the Nazi party to be the site for their annual rallies from 1927 though 1939. After the war, and because of the city’s relationship to the Nazi Party, it was decided that the relatively undamaged Palace of Justice would host the trials of German officials involved in war crimes and crimes against humanity.

Dachau Concentration CampThe first of the Nazi concentration camps, its purpose was later enlarged to include forced labour and eventually the imprisonment of Jews. Although never an extermination camp like Auschwitz, Sobibor or Treblinka it is estimated that over 200,000 prisoners died here as a result of malnutrition, disease or beatings. The camp has been kept open as a Memorial Site to honour the dead.

Colditz CastleIn 1158 the major building works began on a promontory above the town. The castle gained international fame as Oflag IV-C, a prisoner of war camp during WWII for ‘incorrigible’ allied officers who had repeatedly escaped other camps.

ViennaVienna is one of the great capitals of Europe, sitting astride the beautiful Danube - Europe’s second longest river. With a cultural legacy shaped by residents including Mozart and Beethoven this City of Music is also renown for its Wienerschnitzel, apfelstrudel and its many famous coffee houses.

Neuschwanstein CastleOne of the most picturesque of the upper Rhine castles Neuschwanstein or ‘New Swan Stone’ Castle was the template for Disney’s famous Sleeping Beauty castle. Built by Ludwig ll in 1868, and a perfect example of ‘castle romanticism’, it towers above the Alpine foothills in southern Bavaria and hosts more than a million people annually.

PeenemündeIt was here that German scientists, including the famous Wernher von Braun, who would later lead America’s race to the moon, first developed and produced rocket technology.

KielOne of the major naval bases and shipbuilding centres of the German Reich, Kiel was heavily bombed by the Allies during WW2. Here we visit a U-Boat Museum and tour through U-995, a surviving Second War ‘Unterseeboot’ that saw active service during the war.

BerchtesgadenThe site of Hitler’s ‘Eagles Nest Retreat’, the Kehlsteinhaus now has a restaurant with alpine views and a ‘Dokumentation Obersalzberg’ museum that chronicles the Nazi era. Your visit includes a guided tour and lunch reservations.

LübeckThe city of Lübeck can trace its beginnings back to nearly 10,000 BCE as a coastal trading port. It suffered damage during WWII from aerial bombing but much effort was made to restore its historical old town center, which is today a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
