The opportunities for our youth, our volunteers, and our 4-H Program continue to grow! With this growth comes the need to prepare and provide our parents and volunteers with the best resources and information possible. As our 4-H Program continues to expand and become more vital to the youth of Medina County, it is imperative that we effectively engage and empower parents and volunteers.
You are invited to “Enhancing the 4-H Experience” a Special Night for 4-H Parents and Project Leaders to prepare the new generation of 4-H parents and volunteers to lead and instruct our members. You will learn about 4-H opportunities, project information and fun “challenges” offered in 4-H. For more details about this event please call the Extension Office at 830-741-6180.
SALE offers contests outside the ring. Top winners awarded scholarships
Food Challenge: The San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo hosts a Food Challenge Show modeled after the hit TV Se-ries “Iron Chef.” This Food Challenge gives both FFA and 4-H students from across Texas the chance to showcase their cooking skills, but also requires the students to know preparation, nutritional facts, and origins of ingredients. Exhibitors compete as individuals in this competition in which they are randomly assigned into one of four categories: Bread & Ce-real, Fruit & Vegetable, Main Dish, and Nutritious Snacks. The top placing exhibitors in each category advance to the Final Challenge for additional prizes and awards.
Junior Judging Contests: Junior Judging Contests are popular to Texas 4-H and FFA participants because of their value in terms of developing critical thinking and communication skills. A broad variety of contests are hosted each year at the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo to meet the diverse interests of our exhibitors. Exhibitors may compete as indi-viduals or in teams in the following contests: Consumer Decision Making, Dairy Judging, Horse Bowl, Horse Judging, Livestock Judging, Meat Judging, Poultry Judging, Wildlife Habitat, and Wool Judging.
For schedules, additional information and rules see the SALE website. Entries and fees are due in the County Exten-sion Office by Friday November 15th.

NATIONAL 4-H WEEK and ONE-DAY 4-H What great year it is going to be for 4-H in Medina County! The Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service staff in Medina County and our awesome 4-H volunteers are committed to the education and development of the youth in Medina County to be the future leaders of our county, state, country and world.
We are proud of more than 105 years of providing life development opportunities and look forward to the future and the opportunities it brings to our program and our youth. Each year during National 4-H Week, October 6th - 12th, we encourage 4-H clubs and members to highlight program’s successes and showcase what the youth have gained from their membership in 4-H through activities and events. One way to showcase the value of 4-H to the public is to partici-pate in a community service through “One Day 4-H”. (See One Day 4-H information below)
oneday 4-H – October 12, 2013 One day 4-H is one day for all the 4-H members, parents, leaders, and volunteers to step out into their communities and county and say “thank you” by giving back to them for more than 105 years of support to 4-H in Texas. This day of com-munity service is whatever each 4-H members, club, or county 4-H Program wants it to be. It could be as simple as pick-ing up trash and mowing the lawn for senior citizens to elaborate as hosting a 5K Walk/Run and raising money for a cause.
How do you participate? 4-H members and their clubs/county programs should start now on identifying
and planning a community service project. Work to secure all the necessary supplies/equipment/resources to get the pro-
ject done. Advertise/market your project to locate media and others in the community so
they will know the difference you, and 4-H, is making. Sign your project up at the one day 4-H website Conduct your project and then report your successes at the one day 4-H website.
For more information go to: http://texas4-h.tamu.edu/oneday/index.php or call the Medina County Extension office at 830-741-6180
Skill-a-thon Workshop
FOOD & NUTRITION PROJECTS It’s time to fire up the grill and get cooking… the 4-H Food and Nutrition projects began in September. The food and nutri-tion project helps participants learn to make healthy food choices, improve energy and alertness, reduce disease and ill-ness risks, and gain knowledge of nutrients. Major learning experiences are centered around nutrition, menu planning, food buying, preparation and food safety, careers, and cultural influences.
Here are a few things you may want to get involved in:
4-H Food and Nutrition Quiz Bowl 4-H Food Show Food Challenge Recipe Rally SpecTra - Human Sciences Education (limited to 22 senior participants) Rules and Guidelines for the Food Show, Nutrition Quiz Bowl and Food Challenge are available in the Extension Office. The County Food Show and Nutrition Quiz Bowl will be held October 19th and the County Food Challenge will be on October 29th.
Deadline for County Food Show and Nutrition Quiz Bowl is October 9th. County Food Challenge October 18th and S.A.L.E. Food Challenge deadline Nov. 15th.
If you would like more information regarding any of these competitions please call the Extension Office at 830-741-6180.
The Skill-a-thon contests are knowledge based competitions designed to enhance the educational experience of exhibiting livestock by incorporating production and industry perspectives for the Texas 4-H. Contestants will be challenged with questions, skill stations, and a public speaking component encompassing various facets in the livestock industry. This contest is not only designed for those exhibitors who exhibit livestock projects, but also those students who simply have a strong interest in the livestock industry. Exhibitors compete in age divisions, Junior, Intermediate, and Senior with the subject matter tailored for that age group. There will be a Skill-a-Thon Workshop on Wednesday, October 16, 6:30 pm at the Extension office. Contact the Extension office at 830.741.6180 if you have any questions regarding this workshop. S.A.L.E. Swine Skill-a-thon Wednesday, February 5th, Sheep Skill-a-thon Tuesday, February 11th and Beef Skill-a-thon Wednesday, February 12th. Deadline to enter December 1st.

RECORDBOOKS It’s time to start keeping records for your 2013-2014 Projects. Keeping records is a great way to hold on to your memories about your incredible adventures in 4-H. Record keeping is also a great way to develop skills in time management, communication, setting goals and deadlines, money management and project evaluations. In an effort to update the current recordbook system a committee has developed an online program with a data entry system that easily allows for updates, editing and printing.
There will be three (3) levels of recordbooks based on 4-H age (junior, intermediate, and senior). Information requested for each level will progressively add on to each other. The junior & intermediate books are
significantly simplified from past recordbooks. The senior level book is similar to the past record book with some minor edits.
Parts of the report form will be standardized to allow for ease of completion and judging.
Much of the data from previous recordbooks that a member may have saved on their home computer may be “cut and pasted” into the new form
All 4-H members will begin using the new online forms or a new paper form that will be available for download from the Texas 4-H website.
Recordbooks will still be printed and turned in (in hardcopy form) to be judged by the deadline set by your local County Extension Office.
This system is available for use at: http://texas4-h.tamu.edu/youth_recordbooks
