If you are not able to pay the $10, you may still submit an intention for our daily Mass. Please contact Fr. Munshower at 968-7362 or Father Zahn (968-7456 for details and arrangements. Father also requests that, if you contract a Mass, that someone from your family tries to be in attendance on that day.Morning Masses begin at 7:00 a.m. in the Cathedral Chapel. Father John Zahn, Chaplain, will be offering Mass on Monday mornings and during the school

day on a rotating basis. This will allow your children to take advantage of a daily mass during their resource periods some days.

At this time, all of the Masses for the week of August 15th are available, if you have a petition for which you want a Mass offered.

He received two third place ribbons for his performances in the jazz and original composition sections. On August 15, Michael was featured at the Home and Family Arts Building in a public performance for being one of the finalists in the overall contest. Great job to a very talented student musician!

Announcements:

On Thursday, August 25th, we will have our “Meet the Teacher Program” to allow parents to experience their children’s schedule, walk the daily path which their children travel and meet each teacher for a nine-minute class designed to give a bird’s eye view of the course which will be presented this year. Teachers will be giving an overview of their course including methods of instruction, technology to be used and primary means of parental communication.

Each year, there is congestion on the hill as we near the 7:00 p.m. starting time. To alleviate this, we are offering shuttle service beginning at 6:00 p.m. from the parking lot by the former O’Malia’s grocery store at the corner of Emerson Way and 56th Street (just west of the Cathedral entrance). This will allow you to have a larger parking space and a quick ride up the

hill. The shuttles will take you back to the O’Malia’s parking lot after the end of 8 th period.

In order to arrive on time to your child’s first period class, please plan on arriving no later than 25 minutes (or at 6:35 p.m.) before the scheduled start time. Upon arrival, you may pick up

your student’s schedule at the front entrance of Father Kelly Hall or at the entrance of the Student Life Center (by Media Center). It would be highly advisable to discuss the classroom locations (and shortcuts) ahead of time with your son or daughter. We look forward to seeing you on Thursday, August 25 th!

Over the course of the next few weeks, we will be refining the product and our goal is that you will begin receiving that piece in late September. This will mean incorporating much of what you would have received in the monthly Insight, such as month-at-a-glance calendars and good news, allowing us to retire that newsletter.You don’t need to do anything to receive the new newsletter – we’ll use the same distribution list already in place. Service Outreach News:

The spirit of our service will be guided by Matt 25:35-36: “I was hungry and you gave me food. I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was naked and you clothed me. I was homeless and you gave to shelter. I was ill and you came to see me.”

“Woe to you…Blind Pharisee, cleanse first the inside of the cup, so that the outside also may be clean.” Matthew 23:23-26. This scripture prods us to recall how we should shape the inner layers of our being to imitate Jesus, as it is our duty and glory. By our faith, service is our opportunity to share a loving heart with others and with our Lord, as we strive to keep our foundations strong and centered.

Class Service Projects Class service projects in September become perfect service opportunities for off-season sport groups and families. Details on all of these class service projects are noted below in Service Opportunities. By supporting these projects on Saturday, Sep 10 at the Cathedral Soup Kitchen (10:30-1:30), and on Wednesday, Sep 14 at Anna’s House (4:00 PM-7:30 PM), we show a unified force of Irish hospitable generosity in the community. Our August events were very moving experiences: Jonathan, one of our lunch guests at the Cathedral Soup Kitchen, sang a very touching prayer sharing his joy of worship with God. At Anna’s House, the very robust attendance of neighborhood families who came for spaghetti dinner inspired us all.

Habitat for Humanity-Get Ready For Woodshack! Could there be a more vital way for us to support community needs in Indianapolis than to support low cost housing? Cathedral will help to construct our ninth and tenth Habitat for Humanity homes in Indianapolis this fall. Our Habitat for Humanity chapter, led by Co-President seniors Natalie Dickman, Grace Waltz and Claire Welch, will host Woodshack, our Shack City event, on September 9th as a dynamic fundraising/educational experience in homelessness and the need for low cost housing. This project helps us to raise $5,000 by our Habitat chapter to support the annual fall Habitat home that Cathedral undertakes as an important community outreach each year. Thanks always for your support of Habitat! The registration and permission slip forms are linked here.

Grants from United Way Students interested in submitting grants for service projects should contact Mrs. Halstead about the early September workshop and grant deadline at the end of September. Historically, groups from Cathedral are awarded over $10,000 in grants for community projects.

10

NOLA Our fall mission trip to New Orleans will represent our fourth trip to the Gulf area to help with post-Katrina reconstruction and community projects. We will depart at 6 PM on Wed, Oct 26 and return on Monday, October 31. Student leaders from last year’s trip are planning our work outreach in the NOLA area for our upcoming mission trip and invite you to their call out meeting on Tuesday, Sep 6 in the SLC at 3:20. Students from all four grades are welcome on this trip and it promises to offer wonderful outreach in a city still needing assistance. Questions, please contact Mrs. Halstead.

Service Chapters and Clubs Call out meetings for clubs and chapters that perform service are taking place now. These are fun opportunities to develop leadership and to express a compassionate heart in areas of need. Below are some of these clubs and chapters and their call out meeting dates, as known:

ACTS (Aug 24 ) Best Buddies (Aug 24) Habitat 4 Humanity (Aug 24)Kids Against Hunger (Sep 13) Make It Mine (Oct 19) Mentoring Magic (Sep 7) (like Big Bro..Big Sisters) Miracle Place Promise To Keep (Aug 25) Timmy Foundation (Aug 30)

Service Hours on Power School Normally, service hours may be viewed on Power School. They are current for all hours received since the start of school. There is a slight interruption in our ability to view service hours in Power School just yet. Our technical staff will be resolving this problem shortly. You can send me an email or have your student come to my office to confirm their hours currently shown as completed in our data base. For the 2011-12 academic year, service hours for seniors are due December 1, 2011 to meet their total graduation requirement. For the academic year of 2011-12, freshmen, sophomore and junior hours are due March 1, 2012. The service hours for all students will be shown on their fourth quarter report card. If the hours for this year are completed by April 1, hours earned after April 1 may be credited to the next year’s requirement. We are accepting service on a project basis as well. After Sep 1, hours will not be accepted more than sixty days after the date of service performance. Click here to go directly to service opportunities on the web and for problems with below links. Opportunities areaunder On Campus/Service Outreach.

Please continue to turn to the most compelling areas of need to perform your service stewardship. Thank you for supporting your class service projects with enthusiasm and compassion. Should you desire to pursue an outreach project with an agency not listed, you may also consult the list of service agencies available by clicking here. By working with diligence and interest on your service, you should find yourself achieving about four hours of service each month. The balance of 2011 and 2012 provides rich opportunities to direct helpful hands and hearts to aid our community needs. Service Reflection They say it takes a minute to serve a special person, An hour to appreciate them, A day to love them, But then an entire life to forget them.

May your Cathedral service personally enrich you and your spirituality, as we seek toaddress challenges faced by our brothers and sisters in our immediate community and world-wide.

Service hours for freshmen, sophomore and junior students for the academic year of 2011-12 are due on March 1, 2012. Seniors graduation hours for the academic year of 2011-2012 are due on December 1, 2011. Click here for the 2011-12 Service Documentation. Click here for the 2011-12 Service Documentation form. Click here for the Service Hour Criteria. Hours will not be accepted more than sixty days after the date of service performance. Please check the service criteria because neighbor help, family help and working for a business without pay is not accepted as service hours. We always encourage our students to help their families and neighbors but we do not accept these efforts as service hours. We seek to perform our service in the spirit of Matthew 25:35-36.

~~~~~School Lunches at Cathedral this year:
If you think your child(ren) may qualify for free or reduced lunch fees, please click on this link, fill out the form,http://www.cathedral-irish.org/uploaded/Files/mealtime.pdfand submit it to:
Dr. Tom GreerCathedral High School5225 E. 56th Street, Indianapolis, IN 46226.
Lunch- All checks delivered to the front office must be received by 8:00AM so that they can be processed by 9:00AM. If not then they will be process for the next day.
Ed Sahm has sent the new menus and ala carte prices to include for the parents. His goal is to get as many kids eating in the cafeteria as possible. He knows that getting this information to you, the parents, is vital. If you knew what their kids could be eating for $2.80, $4.00 or $4.50, I know a lot of them would quit packing lunch.
All students are welcome to bring a lunch with them, or they can purchase lunch each day from the school cafeteria. In addition to being able to pay for lunch with cash, students can use MyMealTime.com. With this program, students are assigned a student number within PowerSchool to allow parents the option to deposit money into a student's account to be used for lunch purchases. Checks or cash for deposit may be dropped off in the "lunch money" mailbox by the main office. BE SURE to include the student's name or ID number. Deposits may also be made with the designated cashiers at lunchtime. Parents can track purchases made with account funds or deposit money online by setting up a user name and password at www.mymealtime.com. There is no charge to access your student's account. If you choose to deposit money online, the site will charge a 4.9% user fee. If you deposit $100 or more, the cafeteria will credit the user fee amount to your child's balance.
16
In an effort to speed up meal service and offer privacy and convenience, students may opt to use a four digit pin code to identify themselves and use deposited funds for meal purchases. This system
offers complete privacy and use of the device is 100% optional.
For information about the meal service system, visit www.mealtime.com.Cathedral High School is a proud participant in the National School Lunch program. Cathedral, the USDA and the State of Indiana are equal opportunity providers and employers.
Tony Matthews named head coach for Lady IrishIndianapolis, Ind. — Jim McLinn, Cathedral High School athletic director, announced today that Coach Tony Matthews is the new Lady Irish softball coach.
“We’re extremely pleased to get a coach with Tony’s skill and passion for the game,” McLinn said. “We expect he’ll advance the great work that Coach Roessler began and help to solidify a bright future for our Irish.”
Matthews, a former Irish assistant coach, is head coach of the Indy Edge Travel Team and owner of Champion’s Edge softball skills training facility. Under his watch, the Indy Edge have been named the Grand Champions, as well as runner-up, at the National Softball Association Super National Tournament, and are four-time American Softball Association State Champions. Matthews’ former athletes include Morgan Mellow, a former Miss Softball Indiana who lead the nation in strikeouts while playing for Indiana University and Emily Wethington a former Gatorade Softball Player of the Year who played at Ohio University and is presently coaching at Champion’s Edge.
“I am honored and humbled by being named head coach,” Matthews said. “It is literally a dream come true for me. I can’t wait to get to work to continue the legacy of great success and pursuit of state championships for the Lady Irish Softball program.”
Matthews and his wife Sandy are the parents of five children, three of whom are Cathedral grads — Heather ’97; Christopher, ’00 and Colleen, ’01.
You will see heaven opened. (John 1:51)
Under a fig tree. That’s where Nathanael (Bartholomew) was when Jesus “saw” him (John 1:48). What was he doing there? Eating lunch? Thinking about his to-do list? Daydreaming? Some have speculated that because it was traditional to study the Scriptures under a fig tree, Nathanael may have been meditating on God’s promises. If so, it was the perfect prelude to meeting Jesus.
For centuries, God’s promises had sustained Israel with powerful visions of hope. A radiant bride, a city and temple shimmering with the glory of the Lord—the images pointed to a peaceful future when God would live among his people and make them into a light to the other nations. Nathanael must have drawn strength from reflecting on this life to come, even as he suffered under Roman occupation. Perhaps this gave him eyes to recognize Jesus as the “Son of God” and “King of Israel” who would set things right (John 1:49). And Jesus replied, in essence: Keep watching. Have faith. You haven’t seen
anything yet!
That’s what Jesus tells us, too. Like Nathanael, we have wonderful images of the life to come. And we even know that this life has already begun. Baptized into Christ, we have been saved, made into God’s people and citizens of heaven. Now, as St. Catherine of Siena said: “All the way to heaven is heaven.” Just as Nathanael sat under a fig tree contemplating God’s promises, we too can set aside time for quiet, hopeful contemplation. We can try to imagine what heaven will be like. We can
imagine Jesus surrounded by the angels and saints. We can even think about our loved
ones who have gone before us and picture them with Jesus, praying for us, cheering us on, and rejoicing every time we act in faith.
Today, then, go and sit under your fig tree, wherever that may be—an armchair, your prayer corner, the Adoration chapel. If you don’t have one, find the place wherever prayer comes easiest. Lift your heart to the Lord and let his promises fill your mind. Then be still, and listen for his voice.
“Jesus, by your cross and resurrection, you have thrown heaven wide open. Let me see your glory and follow your gospel!”
