The switchgear enclosures are provided with the following compartments:

The all-purpose BusbarCompartment

The all-purpose busbar compartmentis located at the top, at the rearand includes the all-purposebusbar placed on the load switchdisconnector terminals withinsulating shrink tube and siliconeinsulation in areas of contactwith the upper terminals of thedisconnector.It is separated from the secondarycircuit compartment by a metalpanel and from the by the cableconnection lower compartmentthrough the disconnector’s housing.Access within this section is notallowed in normal operation of othersubstation panels.

The Load Break SwitchDisconnector Compartment

This section is the GSC-24 indoor switch disconnector itself, sealed inside the insulating resinhousing.

The enclosure materialprovides good insulation featuresand resistance to moisture andatmospheric contaminants.The insulating housing consists ofupper shell and lower shell, tightlyclosed and the interior is filled withSF6 gas at a pressure of 0.4 bar minimum. The GSC-24 indoors medium voltage switch disconnector can be set in one of the following positions: „closed”, „open”, „earthed”.

Connection Compartment

The connection compartment issituated at the lower side of theenclosure and may include, dependingon panel type: the lower terminalsof the switch disconnector, thecapacitive voltage dividers and thecable terminals. For the fused switchdisconnector panels, the fusesare situated in this compartmentalongside the earthing disconnector below the HRC fuses..The compartment is metal enclosedfixed with special rivets andscrews. Access to this section shallbe realised only if the earthingdisconnector is closed by openingthe compartment’s door. The medium voltage connections are done via single phase conductors enabling the cable terminal. For shielded cables is possible to link the shielding wire

to the earthing busbar by means of a special provided screw.

Secondary Circuits and Operation Mechanism

The Secondary circuit compartmentis located in the front top part ofthe panel and is accessible in normaloperation of the station. For secondary circuits of low complexity, they are partially located in the mechanism’s sector, but also in two adjacent sectors, each protected by metal or plastic plates, easily accessible and that can be opened with a tool. For secondary circuits of higher complexity the enclosure can be provided with an additional circuit panel fitted above the enclosure, in line with the front panel. The additional secondary circuits panel is provided with side access door, that can be handled by hand, which closes with key and lock. The devices placed in the secondary circuits panel are accessible after opening the door. The switchgear block diagram is placed on the door of the joint mechanism and secondary circuits compartment..

Load Break Switch Disconnector

GSC-24 with Type K mechanism GSC-24 is an indoors SF6 disconnector for 24kV rated voltage, using SF6 for arc extinguishing medium as well as for electrical insulation.

GSC-24 is characterized by a small size, convenient to install and operate, and which allows good adaptation to the requirements of integration into existing installations.

The GSC-24 load break switch disconnector has the function of control and protection of the electrical equipment in power networks and transformer substations.

GSC-24 is manufactured in accordance with the following standards: IEC 62271-1, IEC 60265-1, IEC 62271-105, IEC 62271-102 and GB 3804.

The switch disconnector is provided in two variants:

• with Type K mechanism designed to equip line switchgear panels;

17Switchgear description

Switch Disconnector Main Circuit

The main circuit of GSC-24 indoors switch disconnector is sealedinside the resin enclosure.

The enclosure material provides goodinsulation features and resistanceto moisture and atmosphericcontaminants. The insulatinghousing consists of upper shell andlower shell, tightly closed and theinterior is filled with SF6 gas at apressure of 0.4 bar.

A safety valve is provided at thebottom rear of the casing. This isa protection measure to a faultsituation, where the high pressure,internal gas can come out throughthe safety valve without affectingthe operator or the switchgear.

The GSC-24 switch disconnector can be configured as per below:

Arc extinction

The GSC-24 load break switchuses SF6 gas as arc extinguisher.Whilst in on or off position, theelectric arc will spin through theaction of a magnetic field given by apermanent magnet. Subsequentlythe arc will be cooled andextinguished by SF6 gas.

Operating mechanism andinterlocking functions

There are two types of mechanisms used for GSC-24:• The type K, spring operated

mechanism, is used together with the GSC-24 load switch, for line switchgear.

• The type A, spring operated mechanism, is used for the GSC-24 load switch combined with fuses, for transformer panels.

1. The type K spring operated mechanism

The operating principle of type K spring operated mechanism is based on the compression and release of the main spring of the mechanism (see Figure 1, Open Position).

A. Closing the main circuit

Through operating the handle, entry 2 (Figure 1), clockwise, the lower cam rotates, compresses the spring, which accumulates energy.Upon reaching maximum compression, the continued rotationof the crank activates the energy of the main spring and so connecting the mobile contact on “Closed” position of the main circuit.

B. Opening the main circuit

Through operating the handle, entry 2 (Figure 1), counter clockwise, the energy accumulated in the main spring is released and the disconnector switches the main circuit to “Open”

C. Earthing circuit operation (EC)

Closing the EC can be done only by manual operation, inserting the handle in entry 1 (Figure 1), rotating clockwise, the upper cam rotates, compresses the spring, which accumulates energy.

Upon reaching maximum compression, the continued rotation of the crank activates the mechanism that releases the energy of the main spring and so connecting the mobile contact on “Earthed” position of the main circuit.

Opening the EC can be done only by manual operation, inserting the handle in entry 1 (Figure 1), rotating counter clockwise, as per the label affixed to the front cover of the switch disconnector.

The type K operating mechanisms can be motorized, upon request, for opening/ closing the main circuit switch disconnector.These commands can be done remotely or via buttons placed on the front of the enclosure.

19Switchgear description

2. The type A spring operated mechanism

The operating principle of type A spring operated mechanism resembles the type K mechanism, adding the tripping function after tripping by the fuse (striker pin tripping). For the type A operating mechanism, electromagnetic tripping is also available, upon customer’s request.

The dimensions and the elements listed for Type K are valid for Type A, except those marked in Figure 3.

A. Closing the main circuit

Through operating the handle,clockwise, the lower lever 1 rotates,compresses the closing spring12, and the opening spring 8,simultaneously in order to providethe required energy for the closingoperation.When the lower lever 1 activates thetripping pin and the lower slidingwheel and releases the closing springcausing the closing of the maincircuit..

B. Opening the main circuit

To open the main circuit pressthe opening red push-button.Alternatively the fuses tripping pinor the opening electromagnet canactivate the tripping pin 2. Theseoperations cause the release of theappropriate spring and the openingof the main circuit by the load switchdisconnector..

C. Earthing circuit operation (EC)

The EC operation for the Type Amechanism is similar to the one forType K mechanism.

The type A operating mechanisms can be motorized, upon request, for opening/ closing the main circuit switch disconnector.

These commands can be done remotely or via buttons placed on the front of the enclosure.

Warning!For both mechanisms types K or A, only when the switch disconnector is open. one, and only one, of the following operations can be performed:

1. Closing the switch disconnector, manually or electrical, or

2. Closing the cable terminalsearthing circuit, manually.

The SF6 insulated GSC-24 type,indoors medium voltage switchdisconnectors, including the fusedvariant are provided with followinginterlockings:

A.When the switch disconnector is closed the earthing circuit cannot be activated

B.When the earthing circuit is closed, the switch disconnector in open position for the main circuit cannot be operated.

C.Padlock provision for blocking the main circuit and/ or the earthing circuit, to prevent forcing the mechanism.

D.The interlocking between the position of the switch disconnector and the lower compartment, the cables compartment: the cables compartment cover can be removed only if the disconnector is set to “earthed” position. Decoupling the disconnector from the “earthed” position and switching it to the “open” position, can be done only if it is installed correctly, with the cables lower compartment cover in the normal operating position.

The Switchgear are environmentallyfriendly and do not pose a risk thelife, health and safety of operatingpersonnel.

This is achieved by the fact that theproducts have been designed, builtand tested to protect the operatingpersonnel against:

• electric shock – by enclosing the electrical equipment in housing with protection class IP 3X, use of protection barriers (screens) and linking to all conducting inactive parts (not live) to the protection circuit;

• internal arc – The switchgear panels were tested in ICMET Craiova laboratories on front and side free arc resistance. The panels provide internal arc protection to EN 62271 - 200, and are classified IAC: AFL 16 KA 0.5s;

• overloads and short circuits – via appropriate sizing of the electric circuits and the usage of HRC fuses or of protection blocks;

• fire hazard – by using fire and heat resistant materials and by avoiding the risk of occurrence of sources generating heat;

•mechanical hazard – by the absence of sharp tips and edges, of moving parts that can cause injury, by providing mechanical rigidity and sufficient stability of the product;

• improper manoeuvres – by Mechanical interlocks and by appropriate labelling indicating correct operation and warnings.

It is recommended to follow the directions on the labels and in the operating instructions and not try forcing the mechanisms via other maneuvers.

After each manual maneuver remove the operation crank from the entry. Store the crank on a special support near the enclosures.

Operating mechanical interlocks

The switchgear are equipped with mechanical interlocks designedto prevent misuse. Familiarity withthese interlocking is essential beforeperforming any manoeuvre withmedium voltage switchgear.

The available interlocks are:

A.For the Switchgear The lower cover of the cables connection compartment can be only opened whilst the medium voltage cables earthing disconnector is closed.

B. For the Switch Disconnectors The SF6 insulated GSC-24 type, indoors medium voltage switch disconnectors, including the fused combination, are provided with the following interlockings: •When the switch disconnector

is closed the earthing circuit cannot be activated..

•When the earthing circuit is closed, the switch disconnector in open position for the main circuit cannot be operated.

The Switchgear must be stored in original packaging. The storage room must be protected from factors that could cause damage, such as water, steam, salt air, pollutants, micro organisms, insects, rodents, etc.

It is prohibited to store on the side and to over stack the enclosures.

Storage temperature must fall in the -25 to + 70 ° C range.

For the relays and electronic components of in the switchgear observe their manufacturers’ instructions, on the storage temperature range. If necessary, they should be stored separately, following storage temperatures indicated by their manufacturers.

After 12 months storage, qualifiedpersonnel must verify the state ofconservation of the equipment.

Preservation

The medium voltage switchgearmay be stored indoors, in awell-closed, dry and protected fromexternal atmospheric factors. Provided that the conditions aboveare respected, the switchgear do not require special conservation measures.However, to prevent corrosion,the mechanisms parts and thegalvanized components are greasedbefore packaging.

To reduce dampness a Silica Gel sachet is placed in each panel, not to be removed during storage.

Unpacking

Unpacking the medium voltageswitchgear should follow the belowoperations:• Remove the plastic covers or for the

crated products, the lid and sides of the crate;

• Remove from site all packaging materials;

• Remove the wooden pallets as follows:• open the bottom lid (respecting

the operational interlocks, if any earthing circuit is present, it must be closed);

• unscrew the 4 bolts fastened to the pallet;

• lift the enclosure, remove the crossbars and place in the final position.

The packaging materials fromproducts and accessories must beremoved from the operation site,managed as waste and disposed ofaccording to environmental regulations.

Connecting medium voltage cables

The medium voltage cable connection requires that cable channel depth to be sufficient so as to ensure the possibility of observing cable mounting bend radius allowed for the type of cable used.

Connecting medium voltage cables according to the following sequence of operations: • Open the access compartment

covers of the connection cables compartment;

• Remove the shutter pieces on the floor of the enclosure;

• Raising the cable from the channel through the enclosure, over a sufficient distance for terminating the connection;

• Terminating the cables .This instruction does not relate to making the terminal ends or the crimping of cable lugs. These operations must be done as recommended by their suppliers; Positioning and securing the cable to the appropriate terminals: Terminal screw tightening torque is recommended in the following table:

Switchgear Type P2490_1

Terminal Screw Type

Recommended tightening torque [Nm]

M12 / group 8.8 75

Switchgear Type P2490_2

Terminal Screw Type

Recommended tightening torque [Nm]

M10 / group 8.8 50

• After that reinstall the shutter plates to the floor and secure the appropriate cable with the fixing clamp;

• Connect the cable’s earthing straps to the earth bar;

• Fixing the cables must be done on their outer shell. No cables to be connected on terminations;

• Complete clean the cable compartments, removing all foreign bodies, then close, lock and secure with screws the compartment covers.

Fitting the secondary circuits elements

• Re-establish the electrical connections between enclosures as per the electrical diagrams;

• Install the devices that have been dismantled for transport and connect their connecting wires as per the electrical diagrams;

• Install, if appropriate, the voltage indicator lamps on the corresponding sockets ;

• The waste materials resulting from the assembly and connection operations must be removed from the area and from within the products, and managed as waste in accordance with environmental laws.
