TEAM OUTLOOK Sprints, hurdles AnD relay• One of the younger event groups for the

Lobos, the short sprints don’t lack for talent. Junior Peri Moran is the top returner and will be joined by sophomore Erynn Caldwell and a duo of freshmen, Abby Smith and Samantha Woodman

• While the short sprints are youthful, the quartermile is one of the more veteran groups. Holly Van Grinsven won the 400 at the 2015 Mountain West indoor meet, and has Haley Sanner, Zoe Howell and Faith Cobb alongside. Freshman Larimar Rodriguez can step in right away.

• Holly Van Grinsven has a shot at making the NCAA Championships in the 60 hurdles, but needs to cut a few hundredths of the second off her personal record. She was the MW runner-up in 2015.

Middle distance AnD distance• The distance team that won the 2015 NCAA

women’s cross country title is different indoors. Alice Wright, Rhona Auckland and Calli Thackery are the headliners, and all three can make the NCAAs between the mile and 5000. Health in a short season is key for this ultra-talented bunch.

• Sophie Connor was the 800-meter leg in the Lobos’ school-record distance medley relay team from last year. Along with Emily Hosker-Thornhill, she can score points in the middle distance at conference.

• The long distance has some potential, but health is critical. Anna Burton showed flashes in 2015, but didn’t compete in cross country. Lindsey Andrews is a D-III All-American looking to make it big at D-I.

Jumps AnD pole vault• Casey Dowling did the multis in 2015,

but she’s a tremendous long jumper, too. Replacing Aasha Marler (who only has outdoor eligibility) won’t be easy, but Dowling has shown she can pop big jumps.

• She’s done damage in the triple jump at the conference meet both indoors and outdoors, but the goal for Jannell Hadnot might be breaking 13 meters. She’s close, and this might just be the season she jumps further into the postseason.

• Annie Stirling is consistent in the pole vault and leads a group that features Alissa Söderberg and Katherine Whiting. Lots of talent, but equal room for improvement.

Combined events AnD throws• With Samantha Bowe only eligible

outdoors, it’s up to Kyra Mohns and Casey Dowling to make up points in the multis. Mohns scored at the MW meet in 2015, and could be in store for improvement in 2016.

• As usual, not many throwers, but Amaris Blount and Allison Mady both redshirted last year and could be in store for strong marks in 2016.

TEAM OUTLOOK

Sprints, hurdles AnD relay• Quite possibly the deepest group on the

team, the short sprints can carry the load for the Lobos. Ridge Jones is eyeing a strong follow up to his MW title and NCAA berth from 2015. Allan Hamilton and Scott Bajere can both score at the conference meet.

• With three seniors in the group, Carlos Salcido and Josh Burbank will one day be the go-to sprinters. For now, they add depth and can chip in conference points.

• Mark Haywood scored in the 400-meter dash in 2015, while Chris Kline did the same in 2014. Can this group (which also includes Cheyne Dorsey and Mustafa Mududa) come together at the right time?

Middle distance AnD distance• Looking for a third-straight NCAA bid in

the mile, Elmar Engholm is the star of this group. Freshman Josh Kerr could possibly join him, but might need time to develop into an elite-level miler.

• Graham Thomas proved his value in cross country last fall. He’ll look to transition that success to the track and score points at the conference meet.

• Adam Cotton and Dan Milechman are Harvard transfers that can contribute right away. Matt Bergin was great outdoors in 2015, but needs consistency. What’s the ceiling of the rest of the distance runners (Zac Castillo, Jesús Mendoza, Taylor Potter, Adam Monroe)?

Jumps AnD pole vault• Allan Hamilton is a dangerous man, and

could win the long jump and the triple jump indoors. He did it outdoors in 2015, but his focus will be on the long jump. He was All-American last March, so the chase is on for honor No. 2.

• Senior Yannick Roggatz looked like he turned a corner last May. He’s always been good, but now is his chance to be great in the long jump. He’s also projecting to high jump, too.

• Sam Trigg can take over the conference in the triple jump right away if can carry over his talent from the UK. Markus Miller is tasked with replacing NCAA qualifier Django Lovett in the high jump.

• Two true freshman will take aim in the pole vault. Can either Jason Atencio or John Harari make an immediate impact?

Combined events AnD throws• Daniel Lam and Andris Sturans scored

in the heptathlon in 2015. Beau Clafton had some superb moments outdoors. But freshman Ryan Chase might top them all. Lots of youth and talent in this group that hasn’t seen it since Richard York.

season.

Overall, it’s the first indoor athlete-of-the-week honor for New Mexico this season and the 10th since the MW expanded the number of conference athletes of the week from two to four (track athletes and field athletes for both genders) last season.

Hadnot opens with strong

showing in triple jump

Jannell Hadnot, a junior from Oakland, Calif., opened the 2016 season with a strong performance in the triple jump at the Cherry & Silver Invitational. She leaped 41-8 3/4 (12.72 meters) to win the event, moving her to 18th in the NCAA.

It’s her best season-opening mark of her collegiate career, just edging her 41-8 (12.70m) mark from her freshman year. She leaped 38-9 3/4 (11.83m) in her 2015 season debut.

Overall, it’s her fifth-best jump indoors in her collegiate career, and her best since recording a pair of 12.82-meter jumps at the Don Kirby Elite Invitational on February 14, 2015.

Hamilton and roggatz debut in top-40 in NCAA in the long jump

Lobo long jump duo of Allan Hamilton and Yannick Roggatz both claimed strong opens at the Cherry & Silver Invitational on January 22, as they both leaped into the top-40 of the NCAA standings in the event.

Hamilton, a senior out of Edinburgh, Scotland, leaped 24-9 1/2 (7.55 meters) to take second overall and first collegiately in the event, while Roggatz, a senior from Birkenau, Germany, jumped 24-2 1/2 (7.38m) for fifth overall.

Hamilton, a 2015 NCAA All-American in the long jump, moved to 19th in the NCAA in his specialty, with Roggatz not far behind in 38th. Hamilton also leads the Mountain West, with Roggatz in third place.

Hamilton continues to dominate the Mountain West in

the long jump

Allan Hamilton has competed in the long jump at six indoor meets over the last two seasons while at New Mexico. During that span, he has never not lead the Mountain West in the long jump.

Last season, he opened with a mark of 25-2 3/4 (7.69 meters) in the long jump at the Lobo Open, which stood as the best mark in the conference for the entire season, until he one-upped himself with a mark of 25-4 3/4 (7.74m) at the NCAA Indoor Championships.

The next best individual last season was teammate Yannick Roggatz, who leaped 24-4

1/4 (7.42m).

This season, Hamilton made his 2016 debut with a mark of 24-9 1/2 (7.55 meters) registered at the Cherry & Silver Invitational. It’s tops in the conference.

Blount climbs the all-time weight throw rankings

Amaris Blount, a redshirt freshman from Rio Rancho, N.M., made a big impression her first meet as a Lobo. Competing in the weight throw at the Cherry & Silver Invitational on January 22, Blount tossed the ball and chain 54-4 3/4 (16.58 meters) to move to third all-time in the event. Her mark is the sixth-best performance in New Mexico history

She’s the first athlete since Tami Williams in 2010 to enter the all-time top-10 rankings in the event, and Blount is the first Lobo to break 50 feet in the event since 2005.

Also joining in on the fun was fellow redshirt freshman Allison Mady, whose mark of 34-5 3/4 (10.51m) puts her 10th in New Mexico history.

Women’s 4x400 relay scoots to 10th-fastest time in School

history

New Mexico’s women’s 4x400 meter relay team opened up its 2016 season with a solid performance at the Cherry & Silver Invitational on January 23. The quartet of Larimar Rodriguez, Zoe Howell, Haley Sanner and Holly Van Grinsven ran a time of 3:49.32 (converted for altitude) in the event to place fifth overall.

That mark is the 10th-best in New Mexico history, and the second-fastest 4x400 time by the Lobos in the month of January (3:47.65 by Tawsha Brazley, Mickey Brown, Rachel Kelchner and Shirley Pitts on January 21, 2012).

New Mexico men and women ranked top-50 through 1 week

New Mexico track & field placed both its men’s and women’s team in the top 50 in the first regular-season U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) preseason computer rankings released Jan. 25. The women’s team is ranked 40th, and the men are tabbed 50th.

The ranks (not polls, as no one votes) are determined by computing athlete’s best marks from the 2015 indoor season, which are presented as point totals.

The Lobo women are tabbed 40th (20.33 points) in the rankings, with the women’s distance medley relay team (9.26 points) and Calli Thackery (8.97) contributing the majority

of the points. Also adding points were Holly Van Grinsven (0.69), Jannell Hadnot (0.45), Alice Wright (0.91) and Samantha Bowe (0.05).

The New Mexico men were led by Elmar Engholm (10.00 points in the mile), Ridge Jones (6.60 in the 60-meter dash) and Allan Hamilton (1.21 in the long jump) for a total of 17.81 points.

Men’s xc and Track Finish 7th in 2014-15 Program OF THE Year

Standings

New Mexico men’s cross country and track and field placed a program-best seventh in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association’s John McDonnell Program of the Year award standings for the 2014-15 academic year.

The Lobos cross-country and track and field program combined to gain 84 points to place an unprecedented seventh in the final standings, which combine the teams’ finishes from the 2014 NCAA Cross Country Championships, 2015 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships and the 2015 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships.

After taking 36th place at the 2015 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships last weekend, the Lobos, under head coach Joe Franklin, were able to notch their sixth consecutive recognition for the award. Cross country placed 14th and indoor track placed 31st.

The Lobos also finished in the final standing for the award the past six years, dating back to 2010. Last year, New Mexico placed a 11th, with a 11th-place finish in cross country, a 45th-place finish in indoor track and a 44th-place finish in outdoor track.

In 2013, New Mexico finished the season ranked a 13th in the standings, while in 2012, the Lobos took 11th. 2011 saw New Mexico take 14th overall, and the Lobos also placed 11th in 2010.

New Mexico is one of only two schools to finish in the final standings each of the last six years, along with Texas. Oregon and Florida State are the only other schools to earn the honor six times in non-sequential years.

WOMEN’S XC AND TRACK FINISHES 14TH IN PROGRAM OF THE YEAR

STANDINGS

New Mexico women’s cross country and track and field placed 14th in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association’s Terry Crawford Program of the Year award standings for the 2014-15 academic year.

The Lobos combined to gain 99 points in the final standings, which combine the teams’

finishes from the 2014 NCAA Cross Country Championships, 2015 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships and the 2015 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships.

It’s the second time in program history that the Joe Franklin-coached women earned the award, after placing 16th in 2012.

The cross country team placed third to start the 2014-15 campaign, followed by a 46th-place finish at 2015 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships and a 48th-place finish at the NCAA Outdoor Championships.

UNM is one of just seven schools with both the men’s and women’s programs in the final rankings (Oregon, Arkansas, Florida State, Wisconsin, Michigan State and North Carolina).

FRERICHS RECEIVING RECOGNITION ON BOWERMAN WATCH LIST

New Mexico senior Courtney Frerichs is receiving consideration for the Preseason Women’s Bowerman Award Watch List, which was released Jan. 5 by the Bowerman Watch List Committee.

Frerichs, a senior from Nixa, Mo. by way of UMKC, placed second in the 3,000-meter steeplechase last June at the 2015 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Eugene, Ore., and finished the calendar year ranked 27th in the world in the steeplechase.

While at UMKC, Frerichs earned All-American status on the track three times, including twice in the steeplechase. She ran her personal record of 9 minutes, 31.36 seconds in the steeplechase in her runner-up performance at the NCAAs last spring.

She ranks fourth in NCAA history in the steeplechase, and her personal record ranked sixth among all American athletes in 2015.

Lobos Record 2nd-straight Title sweep in 2015

By winning the men’s and women’s team titles at the 2015 Mountain West Indoor Track & Field Championships, the Lobos recorded their second straight sweep of the indoor crowns.

The Lobos also swept the titles last year. UNM has won three MW indoor titles on the men’s side and two straight for the women.

This sweep now gives New Mexico five indoor conference titles in program history.

BYU is the only institution to ever call the Mountain West home to have a similar streak. The Cougars had quite a few sweeps, achieving that 10 times (2000-01, 2003-05, 2007, 2008-11). There have been 16 years of championships in MW history.

UNM’s 2015 title Sweep streak best since BYU

Combined with the cross-country team’s sweep of the Mountain West cross country titles in November, the Lobos are the only school in Division I to have swept their conference’s cross country and indoor track & field titles in 2014-15.

The Lobos also did it last year, and were the only school in Division I to accomplish that then too.

It’s also the first time that’s happened in the MW since BYU accomplished it in 2006-07. The Cougars, now part of the West Coast Conference, managed it five times: 1999-2000, 2000-01, 2002-03, 2004-05 and 2006-07.

Head COACH Joe Franklin Claims multiple accolades

University of New Mexico head track and field coach Joe Franklin was named 2015 Mountain West Indoor Track & Field Coach of the Year for both the men and women after his teams swept the conference championships.

His honor as men’s COY came as a result of the Lobo men winning their third straight MW indoor title, which are the only three in school history. The men’s only other conference title was an outdoor crown in 1967.

He was recognition as the women’s COY for coaching the women to their second straight conference title indoors and the only two outright titles in program history. (The Lobos shared the HCAC outdoor championship in 1985.)

The Lobos had received just two conference COY honors prior to Franklin’s selection, counting his plaudit last year. In 2002, Matt Henry, the UNM coach from 2000-06, was named the men’s outdoor coach in 2002.

Franklin was also named USTFCCCA Mountain Region Women’s Coach of the Year, his third such accolade (2012, 2014).

Lobo cross country/Track racking up the titles

UNM has done pretty well for itself at the conference championships in cross country, indoor track & field and outdoor track & field, winning 14 of the last 16 Mountain West Cross Country Championships and sweeping the last two Mountain West Indoor Track & Field Championships.

Since the 2009-10 season, New Mexico has won 19 of a possible 36 Mountain West titles between cross country and track & field. By comparison, only one other FBS schools, Arkansas, has won more conference titles as an FBS school in the same span.

Lobos Snap up the weekly conference honors in 2015

New Mexico dominated the conference in their second straight sweep of the conference titles. But their reign of talent wasn’t confined to just the conference championships — it was prevalent during the entire regular season, as the Lobos earned nine weekly conference honors.

To start the season, Aasha Marler was selected as the Mountain West Women’s Field Athlete of the Week on Jan. 13. Ridge Jones earned MW Men’s Track Athlete of the Week on Jan. 13, too.

Sammy Silva was next, earning Mountain West Women’s Indoor Track Athlete of the Week on Jan. 27. A week later, Calli Thackery claimed honor No. 4 on the year, earning Mountain West Women’s Indoor Track Athlete on Feb. 3. Silva seized a second plaudit on Feb. 17 after her performance at the Don Kirby Elite Invitational in Albuquerque.

Elmar Engholm took home MW Men’s Track Athlete of the Week honors after the Don Kirby, while Django Lovett took home MW Men’s Field Athlete of the Week for the same meet.

Adam Bitchell claimed his honor on Feb. 22 after the NAU Tune-Up, and Alice Wright was the last Lobos to claim an award after her run at the Alex Wilson Invitational
