MAJOR REGIONAL MEETINGS:

APEC Haus will be constructed at a cost of K120 million, courtesy of gas exploring giant Oil Search. APEC Haus will be built over the

sea at Ela Beach and will resemble something like the Sydney Opera House. The unique design of the facility, which resembles a Mo-

Prime Minister Peter O’Neill has welcomed the ground breaking at the site of the new APEC Leaders’ Summit in 2018. APEC Haus will be built on reclaimed land at the juncture of Ela Beach and the Paga Hill Ring Road and is being undertaken by Oil Search Ltd through a tax credit scheme as was approved by the National Executive Council. Papua New Guinea will host three massive ocean cruise liners parked at Ela beach with 5000 beds to use for the 2018 Asia Pacific Eco-nomic Corporation Summit. This will supplement Port Moresby hotels already booked to accommodate the guests from 21 economies that will be here in PNG for the 2018 APEC Summit in November. Meanwhile on security, Mr Justin Tkatchenko said that the Australian Defence Force will help PNG beef up its intelligence capabilities before the 2018 APEC Leaders’ Summit. Source: PC, p3, 24/10/16

NATIONAL BUDGET 2017—PAPUA NEW GUINEA

The 2017 National Budget has been framed according to the country’s commodity prices says BSP CEO Robin Fleming. The Govern-

ment has to reduce certain key areas in expenditure in order to maintain the physical target of 30 per cent that is GDP ratio and maintain

deficit which is lower than previous years. PNG’s economic growth is projected to average 2.8 per cent in 2016-2018, after 2016 projec-

Australia’s aid program has rehabilitated 290 kilometres of roads maintained in 12 provinces. The Australian aid program concentrated in

the 11 coastal provinces of Momase, Southern region and sections of the Highlands Highway in Eastern Highlands Province for road

maintenance and bridge replacement program. Papua New Guinea signed an agreement with Australia to further establish a platform for

The National Museum and Art Gallery (NMAG) bid farewell to five masterpieces on loan from the National Museum of Australia (NMA)

for an exhibition in Port Moresby. The five pieces featured together with other cultural objects on the Build on Culture Exhibition at the Art

Gallery. The objects left PNG in 1916 to be stored in Australia for safekeeping and scientific research. The recent exhibition was the

MANUS REGIONAL PROCESSING CENTRE

Australia and US have reached a resettlement deal for asylum seekers held in

Papua New Guinea and Nauru. Under the agreement, the migrants there will

be assessed and the most vulnerable will be resettled in the US. About 1200

asylum seekers are being held in the asylum centres on Manus Island and

Nauru. Australia policy of sending migrants who arrive by boat to offshore fa-

cilities has been criticized. Announcing the deal with the US, Prime Minister

Malcolm Turnbull said the resettlement process would be gradual. Earlier this

year, Australia said it planned to shut the Manus Island asylum centre, al-
