A Brand StudioAt A Brand Studio I’ve been fortunate enough to dip my feet in every aspect of the
branding and design pool. I started off as a young design intern with little knowledge
of type hierarchy or packaging rules. Since then, I’ve learned more than I ever
imagined I could stuff my creative brain with. Not only have I perfected my typography
and can call myself an expert on packaging, I also have found a love for web design
and hand lettering.
A the studio, I have been able to contribute concepts for every project, communicate
directly with the client and attend meetings, art direct my creative director, head the
production side for every project, and assist in photoshoots. I’m also able to practice
my visual art skills through illustration, iconography and logo design.
The creative side of design isn’t the only thing I’ve learned a lot about during my time
at A Brand Studio. I often find myself in a management role for many projects, as well
as around the studio. I think it’s safe to say that I wear many hats and love them all.

One of the first projects I contributed on at A Brand Studio was for our own website where I lead the design for all the work pages.
It was my job to figure out the best way to organize all of the client work in a way that would best show our unique creative process.
I decided it was important to show our process in chronological order because that’s how we actually work with our clients -- we start with strategy + discovery and work all the way through expo.
This was the best user experience for site visitors that could potentially be future clients. I wanted to make sure they could have the full branding experience that A Brand Studio offers.

TXPOSTI started working for the Texas Partnership for Out of School Time (TXPOST) in 2012 as their communications and operations intern. They soon discovered my graphic design skills and hired me on part-time as their designer. I continue to provide my design services for this education advocacy non-profit as a freelancer.

While working for TXPOST, I designed their 2012 Annual Report. The organization’s identity in the past has been very playful with lots of photography and graphics. I wanted to keep this identity in their annual report, but clean it up so that they would have an easy to read and alluring report to share with their board members, sponsors, and partners.
The goal of this project was to take something that is usually not so interesting and create it into something that the target audience would want to read. With bold, colorful call-outs and interesting but simple graphics, this goal was achieved.

NurturMeNurturMe is a line of delicious and nutritious organic baby food based out of Austin,
TX. A Brand Studio was lucky enough to start off the branding process at the very
beginning with NurturMe and continues to help the company grow by assisting in all
their design and rebranding needs.

With the knowledge that the company is more of a lifestyle brand with playful graphics, I have been able to produce social media posts and help concept packaging, collateral, and expo material.
After my creative director creates the final design for all these pieces, I take lead in all of the production changes that need to happen, often working one-on-one with the client.
In Spring 2015, the company decided to redesign some of their website pages to become more in-line with the new Quinoa campaign. I was able to design these pages based off the new quinoa snack packaging and content we created for the campaign.

Introducing:
Oatmega BarOatmega Bar is a nutritional protein bar company that was looking to rebrand their entire business. The founder, Trevor Ross, was passionate about giving back to the community and wanted to incorporate this into his business by donating their product to local food banks. They came to A Brand Studio for all of their branding needs.

This project started off with packaging and logo redesign. I was given the opportunity to design a concept to show the client. I started off by sketching different logo ideas and mocking up a few grid structures for packaging.
To represent the new giving back aspect of their company, I created a hand logo that also resembled a heart. Above this logo are flavor icons for each bar.
I created a stylized icon set to illustrate the flavors and benefits of the protein bar. Each icon was also accompanied by a specific color correlated with that flavor. I had to choose color based on taste and made sure each one would really respond well with consumers.

Not only was I able to be a designer for this client, I was also the lead production artist for packaging, print collateral, clothing, shipper stand, and website.
This project was a collaborative experience with my creative director where I learned a lot of my production skills. These skills included packaging and stationery rules, how to set up website files, and the organization and management of a large project.
As part of Oatmega’s rebrand into a giving company, we helped direct their video and photoshoot. We filmed the process of giving their product to local food banks as a way to show consumers the transparency of the company. I was lucky enough be a part of this as an assistant to my creative director and an extra in the video.

Stubborn FoodieAmanda Rales, founder of Stubborn Foodie, came to A Brand Studio
with no brand and a product that was still just an idea. We helped her
turn her ready-to-bake cake batter into a marketable brand that would
stand out in the refrigerated section at Whole Foods.

I was able to contribute packaging and logo concepts for Stubborn Foodie. After several rounds of logo design, my creative director and myself created the final logo for the client. She came up with the typography while I created the circle symbol. I also helped tweak the typography to make it a more ownable mark.
For the packaging concepts, I really wanted to play up the humor in the headlines by making them very large in a handwritten typeface. I illustrated the flavors in a line-drawing style in order to create a harmony with the playfulness of the type and copy.
Because the product was so new to the market, I really wanted to make sure the customer would be able to know what the end result would be. So for one concept, I decided that the best way to show this was through final product photography.
In order to make the product easy to understand for the consumer, I created simple icons to show just how effortless it takes to make. These were incorporated on the final website and one-sheet.

During the photoshoot, we focused on showcasing the clean, simple ingredients used in the product in order to highlight the fact that the brand doesn’t compromise for quality.
The taste-factor of the product was also an important component to the photoshoot. I helped with the food styling to ensure that the product always looked delicious.

Being a part of this project from the very beginning made it easy to work on the production for packaging, website and print collateral. I worked directly with the client for most of the change rounds and learned how to work more efficiently and accurately with her demands.
I was also able to work directly with the printer for packaging, and even went to the facility to view proofs and learn about the process of digital vs offset printing. This was an important experience for me because it has since helped me educate other clients when they need to go to print.

Wild GoldWild Gold has been a client of A Brand Studio’s for 2 years. The company is an all-natural, Camelina based horse supplement product line. They came to us for a rebrand of their website as they added new products to their brand.

I was the lead designer for the website rebrand design for Wild Gold where I took the wireframe of the old site we had designed and reworked it to better fit the demands for an expanded product line.
The new product line was more robust because there were multiple types of consumers. In order to design a user-friendly, easy to navigate website, we needed to think through all the different target markets to determine what benefits were most important to call-out.
After designing the website, it was easy to take this strategy across all brand touch-points, including all print collateral.

We at the New Vocations Racehorse Adoption Program at the Marysville, OH facility have been using Wild Gold for 4 months now and we’ve seen a difference in the quality of their coats. Camelina oil is the foundation of all of our Wild Gold products. Extracted from sustainable Camelina
sativa plants that are harvested from small family owned farms, the oil is produced under cold
compression to insure its beneficial nutrients are maintained.
Research has shown that the omega fatty acid profile of camelina oil positively impacts cell membrane
composition. The omega-3 alpha-linolenic acid found in camelina oil is the same form of omega-3
fatty acid found in the horse’s natural plant-based diet. The problem is that the majority of horse diets
today are made up of dried forages that contain very little omega fatty acid due to the fact that these
fatty acids are not heat stable. This means that while horses may consume plenty of omega-3 fatty
acids from good quality pasture, when grass is dried to make hay the omega-3s are lost. Many of the
oils and fat sources we have traditionally relied upon in equine diets such as corn oil, canola oil, and

Research has shown that after 90 days, canines fed supplemental DHA had lower levels of markers
associated with joint inflammation. In other studies, supplementation with omega-3 fatty acids showed

In collaboration with my creative director, I was the lead production artist for the website and packaging. Working directly with the client via email and phone calls, I was able to successfully produce print-ready files for the final packaging for each product line and deliver final, layered web pages to our web developer.

Peace Officer FilmPeace Officer is a feature documentary film about the increasingly militarized state of American police as told through the story of William “Dub” Lawrence, a former sheriff who established and trained his rural state’s first SWAT team only to see that same unit kill his son-in-law in a controversial standoff 30 years later. The film premiered at the SXSW film festival and was a Grand Jury winner as well as an Audience Award Winner. Scott Christopherson and Brad Barber, the directors of Peace Officer, came to me directly to be their web designer for the film. I excitedly took this freelance job after viewing the thought-provoking film.
A major theme of the documentary is the thin line between ignorance and corruption. The film evoked this theme visually with a dark setting that had an air of mystery. I wanted to keep this look and feel throughout the site to draw in the attention of viewers and keep them interested so they go to a screening of the film.

KitchKitch is a grain free granola product that went through a major rebrand to create a more succinct look and feel that catered more to the owners’ vibrant personalities and chef-inspired recipes. A Brand Studio was responsible for leading the rebrand, from discovery through production, however I was able to take part in the concepting phase for packaging.

My packaging and logo concepts focused on the chef-inspired aspect of the brand because I really wanted to play up the unique flavor combinations of the product itself as well as the fact that the owners’ have chef backgrounds.

During the photoshoot, we focused on showcasing the clean, simple ingredients used in the product in order to highlight the fact that the brand doesn’t compromise for quality.
The taste-factor of the product was also an important component to the photoshoot. I helped with the food styling to ensure that the product always looked delicious.

Teo GelatoInspired by the recipes and flavors in Italy, Tèo Gelato has offered the finest gelatos and sorbettos to Austinites since 2003. Founder, Matthew Lee, came to A Brand Studio for a new logo design in spring of 2015.

I contributed 2 logo and packaging concepts for this client. I wanted to play up the swirls in the gelato as well as flavor, but also keep it modern and simple for the first concept. For the second concept, I practiced my hand typography by creating a script style font that was contemporary, but also had a traditional Italian look and feel.

Veggie Noodle Co.Veggie Noodle Co. started with the idea that spiralizing vegetables doesn’t have to take time and effort. The first in it‘s category, Veggie Noodle Co. is a pre-spiralized, packaged vegetable noodle product. The company came to A Brand Studio at the grass roots and we helped build a brand that focused on the nutrition, versatility, and convenience of the product.

I was able to use my hand type skills again for this fun logo design. A bold, all caps logo really stood out against the bright noodle photography. I added a white shadow to really make the logo pop.

Olive View RanchOlive View Ranch is an extra virgin olive oil company that grows, harvests, and mills their own olives on a beautiful 55 acre ranch in Hallettsville, Texas. The company is still in the process of producing their first harvest, but they decided to get the ball rolling on building a brand so that they can start selling their product in stores as soon as possible. They came to A Brand Studio for all of their branding needs.

This was the first project I was able to concept, design, and art direct myself for the client presentation of concepts. I designed three different logos, packaging designs, and website layouts to show the client a brand overview look and feel in order for her to get a better idea of how the brand would look cohesively.
The first concept touched on the heritage aspect of the brand story. The client is very traditional and I wanted to keep this in mind while also staying modern and clean.
The second concept focused on the bold authenticity of the product and company. The product has a high-end price range so I wanted to design a brand that looked expensive, yet approachable and credible.
The final concept was a more feminine approach that had an artisan look and feel. I wanted a balance between high-end and craftsmanship to show the traditional aspect of the brand and the high quality ingredients.
