Yucca Plantation,now known asMelrose, is a 200-
year old cotton and pecanplanta t ionlocated onthe banks ofCane RiverLake.
The storyof romanticM e l r o s ePlantat ionbegins withthe legendof MarieT h e r e s eC o i n c o i n ,who wasborn, in1742, aslave in thehouseholdof LouisJuche reaude St. Denis,the first commandant of thepost at Natchitoches.
Marie Therese became thematriarch of a family offourteen children-four blackand ten of Franco-Africanblood—and the founder of aunique colony of people.Along with several otherchildren, she was sold toThomas Pierre Metoyer, who later freed her andeventually all her Metoyerchildren.
Between 1794 and 1803,she and her sons received anumber of land grants; thelands forming MelrosePlantation being recorded inthe name of her son LouisDescendants of theMetoyers live along theriver today, a people proudof their heritage and culture.
Louis Metoyer originallyacquired the land in 1795.Metoyer was the second sonof Jean Baptiste Metoyer, aFrench planter, and MarieThérèse Coincoin anAfrican slave owned byMetoyer and later freed by
him. He and his descendentsbuilt and managed a planta-tion here until 1847, when itwas sold to the Hertzogs,
the family that ownedMagnolia Plantation. JosephHenry later acquired theland and moved his familyonto it in 1898.
He died the next year andthe property was passed onto his son, John HamptonHenry, and his daughter-in-law, Cammie Garrett Henry.
Miss Cammie, as she wasknown, was a college-edu-cated woman who was fondof culture and society. Shestarted an art colony at theplantation that became oneof the most popular in theSouth, entertaining suchfamous names as WilliamFaulkner, Lyle Saxon andWilliam Spratling.
During the Henry era, famed “self-taught" artistClementine Hunter also gother start at Melrose, whereshe worked as a cook andpainted in her spare time.Hunter, one of the south’smost primitive artists, beganpainting the people, life, andscenes of Cane River.
She was in her 50s whenshe began painting and con-tinued until a few monthsbefore her death in 1988.
Clementine is Louisiana’smost famous folk artist, andher paintings are on displayat the plantation.
She became the firstAfrican American to have asolo exhibit at the NewOrleans Museum of Art.Her work depicts daily lifein the rural South prior to
the mechanization of agri-culture.
The oldest of the buildingson what is known, as
M e l r o s ePlantation isYucca House,built between1796 and 1814.
This FrenchCreole cottageserved as thefirst big housefor the planta-tion. The secondbuilding is theAfrican House,c o n s t r u c t e ds o m e t i m ebetween 1800and 1830. Manyhave speculatedthat it was builtto resemble tra-ditional African
homes, althoughothers claim its
inspiration comes fromFrench barnsThe Yucca House remained
the large structure on theplantation until 1833 whenthe main house, known asMelrose, was built.
This bousillage (a mixtureof mud, Spanish moss anddeer hair) building has been
remodeled numerous timesand has several additions, including two distinctivehexagonal towers, known asgarçoniéres, flanking thefront gallery. In 1971, the plantation was
donated to the Associationfor the Preservation ofHistoric Natchitoches(APHN).
The organization has con-ducted numerous repairsand restorations through theyears. APHN still maintainsthe plantation and givestours of the grounds daily.
The Association for thePreservation of HistoricNatchitoches has undertak-en the careful restoration ofthe eight structures compos-ing the Melrose complex. In1971, in the interest ofmaintaining Melrose as amonument to Louisiana his-tory,
Southdown LandCompany, which hadacquired the plantation.conveyed the six-acre siteand complex of buildings tothe Association.
In 1974, the Cane Riverplantation was declared aNational HistoricLandmark.
