Why Is This Night Different ?

Melrose B’nai Israel Emanu-El

by Rabbi Charles S. Sherman

This year, in particular, the question, as well as the answer, takes on greater relevance. In years past, we talked about the matzah, the bitter herbs, the vegetable “dippings,” “reclining” around the seder table.

But when we ask this question now, with a global pandemic, the questions and answers are about what we do now, how we do it, or even if we do it.

In years past, I would be leading an MBIEE community seder. There would be the traditional foods, conversations, text study, lots of singing. The second night of Passover I would be having family and friends at our home for a seder, a little more informal, lots of stories, even some silliness, while still fulfilling the regulations of the seder.

When this whole thing broke out, the first thing to go by the wayside was the community seder. It would be too thoughtless, and not safe, to bring people together. Certainly, I thought to myself, we would continue on with our family seder.

But then several days ago, we had to make a decision -- that even the family seder would not take place. It would be putting us in danger. So this year it will be Leah and myself, a seder for two.

I am sure many of you share with us the sadness of this reality. We had hopes of being with grandchildren and family. There is a sense of isolation and loneliness. In Jewish tradition there is a recognition that not everyone has someone to be with – if you have a seder for one, do the questions still need to be asked?

I find myself at an intersection – what do we do in this unchartered territory? Are there limitations? What is forbidden, what is allowed? What I am guided by is the directive we all know, “Choose Life.”

Here are my Rabbinic suggestions, what I am going to

do this year. I hope you will follow my lead.

On Passover cleaning, just do the best you can. Your best is fine. Do not throw away hametz. We do not know how long this thing is going to last. If you want, you can simply cover the hametz up, place it in another cabinet; perishables can be kept on designated shelves in your refrigerator or freezer.

Some of us truly will be alone. Technology is an incredible thing. While some of us do not use technology on Shabbat or Holidays, this year I certainly intend to do so. Many of us have cell phones that we can put on speaker. I would urge you to connect with family or friends through your seder.

MBIEE will offer a virtual seder. And Leah and I invite you to join us at our virtual dinner table. At this point, it looks like the best vehicle is Facebook live. We are aggressively researching other platforms, such as Zoom. There are other virtual seders that may be at a better time for you. I will make the information available to you (on how to access those) once it comes to my attention.

We will be offering Passover services either through the Melrose community, other synagogue communities, or a combination of both. That information will be made available to you in the very near future.

As you know, when we end the seder, what we say to each other is “Next year in Jerusalem.” These words end the seder on a hopeful note, looking with optimism to the future. Jerusalem becomes a state of mind. Next year in Jerusalem is about rebuilding our dreams, hopes and opportunities. It is about renewing our faith and belief and envisioning a time when all things that are broken can be repaired.

President’s Report In this unsettling time of isolation and social distancing,

let’s start by focusing on those moments of joy and celebration we experienced together in the past weeks.

On Saturday, March 7, 170 of us were treated to an exuberant evening of Hebrew, Israeli, and American folk songs performed by Cantor Stephen Freedman in our very own MBIEE cabaret. Having been to Kabbalat Shabbat services, we know that he is a

talented guitar player. What we didn’t know, and soon discovered to our delight, is that in addition to his being a versatile song stylist, the Cantor is a charismatic showman. He had the audience laughing, singing and even dancing in

the aisles. Joining him in a few selections was his wife, Randi. What a lovely and welcome surprise that was. We thank him for bringing us together in spirited song, joy and community at a time when we most needed it. The spontaneous standing ovation he received was testament to the gift all in

attendance felt privileged to receive. We are deeply grateful to a most dedicated committee for making this evening possible.

Two nights later, we had our remarkable Philly Purim celebration, one that will not soon be forgotten. Rabbi Robert Alpert did a dynamic and moving Megillah reading. The packed sanctuary responded with overwhelming enthusiasm. We were also entertained that night by our very own Purim Players who performed a skit, “Yingle Bell Rock,” written, produced and directed by Alan Berson. It was a fast paced and stirring production, well received by all. Kudos to the cast! Following this, the festivities continued as the Fralinger String Band marched in joined by the costumed Rabbi Sherman and Cantors Freedman and Tillman. All were on their feet as our clergy danced, sang and then led an animated line of congregants through the sanctuary as the band played from the Bimah. Clearly, we at MBIEE know how to throw a party! Following the revelry, we moved to the social hall for Philly treats: Rita’s water ice, pizza, soft pretzels and so much more. Reluctant to see the evening come to an end, many stayed on for some time to socialize, eat and drink. Much appreciation to Rabbi Sherman for his vision, Warren Nachmann for coordinating the refreshments, and Cantors Tillman and Freedman for their passionate participation.

For many of us, one or both events represented the last time we gathered in a large group. How appropriate that we were able to come together in a communal setting with our

MBIEE family. We hosted many guests on both occasions who commented on how warm and welcoming we are. We did ourselves proud! Upcoming programs that had to be postponed will be rescheduled.

It was only three days after our Purim celebration that guidelines for dealing with the potential spread of

Coronavirus were put in place. We immediately sent a letter both electronically and through the mail with our response. Within hours what we wrote became obsolete as the Governor and later the President requested that all large public gatherings regardless of precautions taken be canceled. With the consent of the Executive Committee, we adhered to the directives. Rabbi Sherman immediately began to make provisions for our congregants who

want to stay spiritually connected during this time. Every weekday afternoon, Rabbi Sherman and Friends provide a Torah inspired lesson. He and Cantor Freedman conduct Kabbalat Shabbat Services on Friday afternoons. Both can be accessed through Facebook. Also, our Board is contacting all members to find out how they are doing at this time and to offer whatever assistance and support MBIEE and the Rabbi can provide. Through these calls, we’ve also received additional offers of help, so typical of “our little shul with the big heart.” As of this writing, we have many more options planned for the immediate future and beyond. You will learn of them shortly.

I recently read an article by Rabbi Bradley Shavit Artson from the Ziegler School of Rabbinic Studies. Writing about Jewish wisdom for a time of pandemic, he closed with the following words: We do not venture into this fray alone. We walk with one another, carrying a Torah of wisdom and bearing the Divine image.

We will get through this together. Know that we at MBIEE are here for you. Please reach out. Stay safe and healthy.

I look forward to greeting everyone face to face again in the comfort of our community.

B’Shalom, Fran

Coronavirus Special

Page 6 The Shofar Volume LXI, Number 4

In mid-December, people starting getting sick in the city of Wuhan in eastern China, about 300 miles from Shanghai. The disease was a rapidly-developing pneumonia that was sometimes severe and sometimes fatal. From January to the publication date of this issue of the Shofar, the disease, now known to medical scientists as Covid-19, spread around the world. So far, very few of us have gotten ill. Nevertheless, it has changed our lives.

MBIEE Response to Covid-19

All MBIEE services, daily minyan and Shabbat, have been cancelled until the emergency is over. All events and meetings at our shul have been cancelled until further notice. The Congregational Seder, first night of Passover, has been cancelled.

To make up for the loss of our shul, Rabbi Sherman is live-streaming a teaching/learning opportunity that he calls, "Higher and Higher.” It can be seen each weekday at 1pm, and is accessed through the MBIEE Facebook page. These brief moments of learning allow us as a synagogue community/family to embrace and encourage one another in the context of Torah and faith during these most challenging times.

Also, each Friday afternoon at 4:00 pm Rabbi Sherman and Cantor Stephen Freedman will be live-streaming an abbreviated Kabbalat Shabbat Service with uplifting music and liturgy. This will include reading a prayer of healing and the Mourners Kaddish.

Finally, we are beginning a new initiative of calling all our members on a weekly basis. We want to know how you are doing and whether you have any needs that we can fulfill. We are monitoring phone calls and emails remotely every day from 9am to 5pm. Feel free to call or email, asking for help or discussing problems or concerns.

Rabbi Sherman is available to congregants who need him. Email him at [email protected] or call him at 315-727-3806.

Useful Information for the Concerned and Distraught The editor organized this information based on an article

posted online on February 20 on Covid-19 that is directed at lay people. The complete post, authored by Ricki Lewis, Phd, can be found at https://blogs.plos.org/dnascience/2020/02/20/covid-19-vaccine-will-close-in-on-the-spikes/. Other good sources of reliable facts are found at https://www.cdc.gov/and https://www.fda.gov/

The plague, Covid-19, is caused by a virus, SARS-Cov-2. It is a member of a family of viruses called “corona” viruses, because under a powerful electron microscope we see what looks like a crown (see next column). The “spikes” allow the virus to attach to our cells and penetrate them.

Despite what you may hear on cable TV, corona viruses are not new, but have been known for about 50 years. There are 7 of these beasts that infect human beings. Four cause mild, non-fatal diseases, such as the common cold; the other three are more serious. Readers with a few miles on their odometer will remembers SARS (now called SARS1), which came along in 2002, causing severe pneumonia and affecting more than 8,000 people world wide and causing 774 deaths, a mortality rate of almost 10%. Fortunately, SARS1 was not so contagious; even more fortunate, it went away and never came back. MERS (Middle Eastern Respiratory Syndrome) emerged in 2012 in the Arabian peninsula; it was often fatal, but has remained rare.

Viruses, including our present invader, are simple little beings of 120nm diameter (about one-tenth the size of your average bacterium). The “body” of the new virus is just a genome (collection of genes) composed of RNA, instead of the more familiar DNA. The genome is surrounded by several proteins, one of which comprises the “spikes.”

It may be comforting to know that corona viruses, not our current virus, infect other animals, including dogs, pigs, cows, horses, whales, and chickens. There are other animals that carry corona viruses, including SARS-Cov-2, but are not sickened by them, most importantly, bats. Some scientists think that our current nemesis originated in bats. If you were thinking of adopting a bat as a pet, now is not the time.

Currently, pharma and biotech companies are charging ahead to test anti-viral drugs and create vaccines. But vaccine and drug development take time. Until then, treatment remains supportive. As most of us know, Covid-19 is a danger mainly to people older than age 60 and is great danger to those who are in their 80’s and 90’s. People whose immune system is compromised by disease or drugs are also in the danger zone. Young folks and children usually get very mild disease that is often not even noticed.

A final optimistic note: Corona viruses are usually seasonal, fading away in spring-summer. Let’s hope that this beast follows that pattern.

Sisterhood and More

Sisterhood Report Most Sisterhood events—Sisterhood Shabbat (May 2), Book

Club/closing affair (May 17) and Torah Fund event (early June)

have been postponed because of the Covid-19 emergency. We will let you know when they are rescheduled. Let's hope

things to return to normal soon. We will keep you posted as to the status of these events. Helene Katz and Margo Kuno, Co-Presidents, [email protected]

Inclusion Committee The Inclusion Committee is really proud. On February

29th we presented a wonderful and successful Inclusion Shabbat program. Regina Levin, a social worker, treated us to a discussion about her life’s journey living with a hearing impairment. She provided congregants with meaningful strategies to use when interacting with a hard of hearing individual. Regina gave us a lot of food for thought. Thanks to our committee for your help, especially

Janet Eisenberg for creating her decorative centerpieces. We all enjoyed a festive Kiddush after the service

The Inclusion Committee has recently completed two important projects- one in memory of Sheila Pressman and one that could benefit anyone in the Melrose community.

The ROMEO group donated money in memory of Sheila. They asked that the money be used for something at Artis Senior Living where Sheila was a resident for several years. After discussion with the Artis staff, it was decided to provide our friends with an electric Shabbat candlestick and an electric Hannukah menorah. Phil Barrish constructed a beautiful wooden box to store the candlesticks. This gift will be delivered to Artis when it is possible to do so.

Irv Gellman made the committee aware that the mezuzot in our building are not accessible to people in wheelchairs. After discussion within the committee and consultation with Rabbi Sherman, three new mezuzot have been purchased and will be dedicated at a later time.

At this difficult time, we hope that everyone remains safe and healthy.

Jean Lisman and Honey Zazoff, Inclusion Co-Chairs

Cantor’s Café Melrose B’nai Israel Emanu-El hosted a Cantor’s Café on

March 7, 2020. No, it wasn’t The Gilded Cage or the Main Point, but it was MBIEE in Elkins Park.

Melrose’s own Cantor Stephen Freedman, who started out as a folksinger and sings and plays his own guitar, treated an audience of about 170 to all kinds of songs — American, Israeli and Hebrew.

Cantor Freedman began with grand renditions of Hallelujah, Shehecheyanu, Ma Tovu, Leaving Mother Russia; these were followed by beautiful surprise duet of I Still Believe, which he sang with his wife, Randi. Cantor Freedman continued with Naomi Shemer’s Y’rusahlayim Shel Zahav, and other Hebrew favorites.

We had the unexpected pleasure of listening to James Taylor and Carol King singing You’ve Got a Friend. Wait. No, it was Cantor Freedman and Randi taking the roles of James and Carol. Cantor Freedman ended the memorable event with My (His) Way, appropriate because he has a style all his own.

It was a great evening for one and all. We hope that the future holds more singing with Cantor Freedman and Randi and even a possible hootenanny.

Security Update We were advised that all of the items requested for

MBIEE in KI’s grant application to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania were approved. Some relate specifically to MBIEE and some are for the benefit of both shuls. Specifically approved were the following:

• removal of the frosted glass in the entry doors in the parking lot and replacing it with clear safety glass

• installation of cement bollards at the entry doors in the parking lot and on Old York Road (the bollards prevent an attacker from crashing his vehicle through our doorways)

• enhanced lighting in the parking lot

• additional security monitors in the lobby of MBIEE and inside the Sanctuary /social hall area which will cover the various entrances to our part of the building.

• enhanced ability for MBIEE office personnel to view various entrances on the monitor in the office

• a central monitoring station in the area of the main entrance to the KI lobby which will allow the KI security guards to monitor all entrances to the building, including those of MBIEE

KI is in the process of beginning these renovations. Due to the current health care crisis, it is anticipated that there may be some delays in completing the work If you have any questions, please feel free to contact either Fran or Mitchell. Please stay safe and be well during these most unusual times.

Men’s Club News

On Sunday, March 1, Men's Club held a wine-tasting and food pairing with wines and foods matched to bring out the

flavors in each. Reuvain Rosenberg of the Rosenberg Blue Star Wine Company acted as our guide to the wines served. This was a nice intimate affair. The menu was interesting and tasty with our thanks to Boscovs for selecting the

menu, which was as follows:

1) Adama Rose (served with a vegetable soup) 2) Bartenura Prosecco (served with melon salad, garnished with mint) 3) Baron Herzog Sauvignon Blanc (served with flounder in lemon sauce, garnished with tarragon) 4) Ramon Cardova Rioja (served with sliced prime rib and roasted potato) 5) Yarden T2 Port (served with a dessert of mixed nuts and dried fruit)

We hope that the event will spark interest in the wines the synagogue has available for sale. Any of the wines listed below can be ordered and purchased from the Men’s Club. If you fill out an order form, available on the table in the lobby, the order will be filled and ready for pickup any morning after Minyan and on most other days, except Shabbat and Yom Tov. You can visit the wine shop (in the cloak room) after weekday Minyans or by making an appointment with our sommeliers. Mitchell Pinsly ([email protected]) and Ben Burrows ([email protected]), Co-Presidents

Old Wine - New Ways of Purchasing Now, for the first time, new and exciting wines also can be purchased on-line by going directly to Rosenberg’s Blue Star Wine Company (KosherWine Marketplace.com). You can order one bottle, a full case, or a mixed case. Your wine will be delivered to our shul, and arrangement will be made for you to pick up and pay for it at a convenient time.

We hope that you will be pleased with these new choices of kosher

wine and the new internet purchase option. Any oenological questions can be directed to Ben, Mitchell or Andy Black by email or by leaving a note in the office (215-635-1505).

A Passover Recipe Contributed by Sharon Sussman, Food Editor

MATZAH TOFFEE BARK

5-6 pieces plain matzah 1 cup unsalted butter/margarine (parve) 1 cup sugar 12 ounces semisweet chocolate chips

Heat oven to 400 degrees. Line a cookie sheet with aluminum foil. Lay the matzah in a single layer so that it completely covers the bottom of the sheet. In a saucepan, melt the butter or margarine and sugar over low heat. Raise the heat and boil the mixture for 2 minutes. Pour the butter/margarine-sugar combination over the matzah and spread it with the back of a spoon. Place the matzah in the oven for 5 minutes. Remove the cookie sheet from the oven and immediately pour the chocolate chips over the matzah. Return the sheet to the oven for 30 seconds to melt the chocolate. Remove the sheet from the oven and smooth the chocolate evenly over the matzah with a spatula. Add chopped almonds or nuts if you’d like. Refrigerate for at least 1 hour or overnight. Break into pieces and serve.

Leftovers, if there are any, can be covered and stored in the frig for up to a week.

Enjoy and Bon Appetite

On-Line Contributions and Payments to MBIEE It is now possible to make contributions to MBIEE and

to make other payments (dues, congregation events) on our web site, www.mbiee.org, through PayPal. You will find PayPal buttons on the top of the home page and on the “Contribute” page that look like this:

Instructions: When you click on the button, you will be taken to a

payment box. Choose or type in the amount you wish to contribute/pay. Click on the arrow in the Optional box to choose the fund to which you want your contribution directed. Then click on one of the following options: Donate with Pay Pal – You can only use this option if you are registered with PayPal, or Donate with a credit or debit card – Choose this option for card payment.

The next screen presents a box where necessary information is entered. Please click on the “Write a Note” option. This will open a text box in which you can type the purpose of your donation; please include the name of the person you would like to memorialize or honor and, if you wish, include the reason for the honor, e.g., birthday or anniversary. The next box requests the usual credit card information, and the following box requests your address. Please click on the box that approves sharing your mailing address with MBIEE so that our office can contact you if necessary. Also, please complete the bottom box which requests your phone number and email.

You can also use this system to pay your synagogue dues or for an event. In the: “Write a Note” box simply type in text to indicate that your payment is for dues or for a shul event. You may wish to check the last box so that your information is saved on Pay Pal so that you don’t have to type it all again the next time you contribute or pay. Finally, click on “Donate Now.” Within a few minutes you will receive an email acknowledging your contribution/payment; this will serve as your tax receipt. Be assured that all of this information is kept confidential by PayPal, and only designated personnel (Treasurer) will see it.

We request that you add 3% to your payment amount to cover the fees charged to MBIEE for credit card payment.

If you do not care to use this web-based system, you may continue to call the synagogue office (215-635-1505) and provide your contribution/payment information to our office staff. Then, they will enter your information into PayPal using the procedure described above. If you have any questions about this new method of contribution/payment, feel free to contact Jay Rigberg ([email protected]).

Honor and Remember: It is fitting that a member of the family be present at the minyan on the day of the yahrzeit. Anyone observing a yahrzeit is entitled to an aliyah, which is arranged by contacting Warren Nachmann through the MBIEE office. Also, the name of the remembered is announced from the pulpit on the Shabbat morning preceding the week of the yahrzeit. The memory of your loved one can be honored by making a contribution to the MBIEE Yahrzeit Fund, sponsoring a Shabbat Kiddush, or purchasing a Memorial Plaque.

Memorial Plaques Memorialize your loved ones by purchasing a memorial plaque that will be displayed on the walls of the MBIEE sanctuary in perpetuity. A plaque guarantees that Kaddish will be recited on each yahrzeit. For details, call Gunther Kirchheimer through the MBIEE office.
