"I have no pastoral gift, and Member Care is not my calling!" I almost yelled back at the members of the leadership team I was chairing. During the years I served as the West Area leader in YWAM, we were trying
to solve a difficult conflict that arose between a staff member and his leader. Someone suggested that I, as the overall leader, should step in and help solve the conflict.
Have you ever heard people saying things such as, "I'm not a member care person" or "Member care is not my responsibility"? Have you ever said that? Well, I said it more than a few times...
Down the line I realized that member care is not just the responsibility of a few so-called "member care staff". Yes, there will be a few of us whose primary calling is to care for the welfare of the YWAMers. But the truth is that member care is everyone's responsibility! It is obeying the biblical command to "love one another as Christ loved his disciples", to "carry each other's burdens", to "build up, encourage, protect, stir one another to love and good works".

Everyone’sResponsibility
To develop, preserve and restore kingdom workers for effective service – Bruce Swanson, CB International
Many people think that member care is a synonym of counseling. Well, counseling is part of member care. But member care is much more than counseling.
Dr. Bruce Swanson defines member care as "the formal and informal efforts to develop, preserve and restore Kingdom workers for effective service". Some may be more competent to restore people when they go through a crisis, which includes counseling (marriage, singles, career, etc). Others are more skilled to help preserve or prevent people from "falling off the cliff", which includes prayer, spiritual retreats, debriefing, personal visits, seminars, etc. And others may feel that their calling is more to develop people through staff training and orientation, providing guidelines and structure, etc.
Therefore, the question that each of us should ask is not "am I called to do member care?" but "In which ways can I provide member care to my fellow YWAMers?"
As you read this edition that covers different aspects of member care, my prayer is that you will become more aware of and enthusiastic about being part of blessing each other's lives, for God's glory and for the extension of His Kingdom!

A few months ago I was preaching in Krakow, Poland. A few miles from Krakow is the major Nazi camp, Auschwitz. One and a half million people died in 3+ years. This camp was absolutely isolated. Isolation had serious consequences then, and it still does today.
Walls of SeparationAt the time when the apostle Paul wrote to the Galatians, there were at least three real social conflicts in the middle of society. He wrote in Gal 3:27-28, For all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. There is neither Jew or Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus.
But in the time of the Apostle Paul, there were very big differences. Big walls separated and divided Jew and Gentile, slave and free, male and female. Paul was teaching that these differences were a commandment of society, but from our perspective, as Christians, we must live in another dimension. Ephesians 2:14 says, ‘For he himself is our peace who has made the two one and has destroyed the barriers, the dividing wall of hostility.’
The main focus of the devil is to build up walls. From the beginning the main strategy of the enemy is to produce division, misunderstanding, confusion, and to destroy relationships. We can see this every day, even inside the Body of Christ, even inside our bases and our own families. This is the expertise of the enemy, to put walls among every group and between each person – making us islands.

What is an island? An island is a portion of earth completely surrounded by water. Islands are completely disconnected. Because there is no link between the island and the continent, it is totally isolated. The enemy focuses on producing islands. We begin to doubt and compare, “Oh, my ministry is not working. The other ministry is successful.” The enemy even uses real facts to promote his lies. When my life is isolated, when my ministry is isolated, when my relationship with other colleagues is isolated, when I lose the trust in my leaders, the enemy accomplishes his goal. However, Jesus, through the cross, made a bridge so we can be connected…no more walls!
The power of the cross is in destroying barriers. Today in our societies, we have a lot of barriers among us: walls among generations, among 1st and 3rd worlds, among nationals and foreigners, among rich and poor. Really, the devil is not interested in your financial situation. It doesn’t matter for him whether you are rich or poor. He’s not very interested whether you are sick or if you have good health. The priority of the enemy is to build a wall around you, between you and the Lord. He will use every strategy possible to do it. Remember Job in the Bible? ‘Oh, he’s serving You because You gave everything to Job’. The goal of the enemy was to put separation, division between God and Job.
IF WE HAVE 300 BARRIERS IN OUR SOCIETY, WE HAVE 300 OPPORTUNITIES TO CREATE PLATFORMS OF BLESSINGS.;fn gekjs lekt esa 300 #dkoVsa ¼nhokjsa½ gSa rks gekjs ikl vk'kh"kksa ds ik;nkuksa dk fuekZ.k djus ds 300 volj gSaA

Be Aware of Enemy TacticsThe enemy is not stupid. When he sees that he can’t destroy your life through conflicts or difficulties, he will try to do it through prosperity. When we have problems we seek the presence of God. But when everything is going well with our finances, our health, in our ministry, or in everything we do, be careful! Very few people can stay humble when they prosper.
SOME SITUATIONS THAT CONTRIBUTE TOWARDS ISOLATION:
A SPIRIT OF CRITICISMWe judge other people in everything. We must be careful with our expressions and our words for they have the power to build a bridge or to create isolation
OUR OWN SINS come to produce a wall
A SPIRIT OF REJECTION Those with a spirit of rejection attract more rejection, like a magnet, asking others to reject them.
LACK OF TRUST
INDIFFERENCE “I don’t care about him. Oh, I have no problems with him.” Well, this is the problem! The Lord called me to love. Indifference is lack of love. When we have a conflict, we know we need to resolve it. But often there’s no conflict, it’s just a wall of indifference. It’s very simple. I’m not interested in what happens with him. This is a lack of love! This is a very dangerous attitude to adopt.
ON THE CROSS JESUS DESTROYED ALL THE BARRIERS, THE WALLS, AND THE ISOLATION OF OUR ISLANDS TO TRANSFORM THEM INTO PLATFORMS OF BLESSINGS. Øwl ij ;h’kq us lHkh #dkoVksa dks] lHkh nhokjksa dks rFkk gekjh i`Fkdrk ds }hiksa dks u"V djds mUgsa vk'kh"kksa ds ik;nkuksa esa ifjofrZr dj fn;kA

We must be aware of the enemy’s tactics of separating us from one another. Don’t allow anything or anybody to build a wall between you and the rest of the YWAM family. Love is a commandment. There are no excuses, no reasons to build up walls of division. The spirit of the Bible is INTERDEPENDENCE – to depend on each other. In the New Testament the expression ‘each other’ is repeated 26 times. Love each other, carry each other’s burdens, pray for each other, encourage each other. Say, “I need you!” We are not islands. We are builders, we are constructors of bridges. What we have in the middle of our differences is a platform. We can transform our limits into platforms of blessings.
If we have 300 barriers in our society, we have 300 opportunities to create platforms of blessings.
God’s Word to UsThe root of this nation is completely full of divisions. The churches in India are full of divisions. This spirit of division is fighting with us in YWAM. We need to recognize this strategy of the enemy. You know what happens to some of our YWAMers? They receive good training in our schools. They have a vision to enter and disciple the society, but a year later the environment of this society swallowed them because they were isolated – an island.
Who are you? What are you doing? Don’t be an island. Don’t be isolated.
Dear YWAM brother and sister. Don’t allow anything to separate you from God, from the Body of Christ, from YWAM, from your family, from the ministry, from His Word. Don’t walk alone. Don’t be independent. You don’t need to suffer alone. Do not let yourself get cut off as those in the Auschwitz prison camp. You are part of the wonderful body. No walls with the society. No walls between bases, between one city and another, between one ethnic group and another - no walls - no barriers.
On the cross Jesus destroyed all the barriers, the walls, and the isolation of our islands to transform them into platforms of blessings. Destroy the spirit of indifference in your life and ministry.
This is very key for this season we are entering now as YWAM India. This is a personal word of God. Destroy the personal prejudgment you have about other people. If not, your prejudgment will destroy you.
For this reason I want to pray for the Lord to send a baptism of love in the middle of us, in my life, in my family, with my colleagues, in our base, with other bases, within the Body of Christ.

We have in scripture and in history wonderful models of people who were sold out 100% for Jesus, whose lives made an impact for God. William Borden of Yale was one young man with such an attitude. Born into a wealthy family, educated at Yale University, he
had a bright future ahead of him. God had called him to preach the gospel in Asia, but he never made it to his destination. He died in North Africa of malaria. He was 25 years old. Yet, because of his going, many young people from North America and Europe offered themselves to serve the Lord Jesus. BILLY GRAHAM SAID OF HIM:a. No reserve - didn’t hold anything backb. No retreat - no turning back from his appointed callc. No regrets - nothing he was ashamed of, or that he wished he had done differently in his life.
A sociologist once surveyed elderly people, of 95 years and above. He asked them that if they could live their lives over again, what would they have done differently. Again and again these three answers came up:1. I’d take more risks2. I’d take more time to reflect 3. I’d do more things that would live on after I die.
These are folks who wanted to finish their lives well. Are there things that the Lord has put on your heart to do that are risky? Are you afraid to say “yes”? Are you taking regular time sitting in the Lord’s presence, looking at where your life is going, allowing Him to speak to you? What investments in eternal things are you making? In your children, in other people, in your ministry? The apostle Paul had a focus in his life to finish well. He saw his life as a race:
1. To the Ephesian elders he said, “if only I may finish the race and complete the task the Lord has given me.” - Acts. 20:242. To the Philippians he wrote, “Not that I have already obtained all this or have already been made perfect, but I press on...forgetting what is behind and straining on toward what is ahead. I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward, in Christ Jesus.” Phil. 3:12-14
3. At the end of his life he testified to his friend and son in the Lord, Timothy, “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.” 2 Timothy 4:7 He finished his life well.
Finishing wellFinishing wellTO FINISH WELL DOES NOT MEAN TO REACH PERFECTIONvPNk var djus dk vFkZ fl)rk rd igq¡puk ugha gS
SPICECOM.ORG /7
To finish well does not mean to reach perfection, but like Paul, to keep pressing on. So that when our time comes to an end, we’re still growing in our love for Christ, and intimacy with Him, still pressing on to make Him known, still living as his disciple and loving the people he places in our lives, and pressing on to know and do God’s will.
CHARACTERISTICS OF POOR FINISHERS
Paul said in 2 Timothy 4:7-8 “I have fought the good fight.Jesus Himself said in John 19:30 “It is finished”
WHAT ARE THE CHARACTERISTICS OF POOR FINISHERS?
1. RESISTANCE TO STRUCTURE - Feel that submitting to discipline of a plan is a putdown.
2. FEAR OF SUCCESS. Over-concerned that success will cause others to envy and criticize.
3. LACK OF FOLLOW-THROUGH. Much more interested and excited about the birth of an idea or project than turning it over to others to execute it.
4. DISTRACTIBILITY - Unable to focus on a project the entire time until it is done. Concentration skills are poor.
5. INABILITY TO DELAY GRATIFICATION. Unable to work through the pain of a project. Want to go directly to the pleasure. Don’t experience the satisfaction of a job well done.
6. INABILITY TO SAY NO TO OTHER PRESSURES. Unable to say no to others. Don’t have time to finish any job well.
Bobby Clinton of Fuller School of World Mission said those who have finished their Christian lives well have the following characteristics:
1. They had perspective which enabled them to focus. It is the ability and vision to see the big picture, or to relate what is happening to a long-range view. People who influence their world are people who can focus in appropriate areas and not get sidetracked.
2. They enjoyed intimacy with Christ and experienced repeated times of inner renewal. The power to lead and minister comes from the inner life. The apostle Paul’s lifelong pursuit was to know Christ - spending time with Jesus and seeking to obey

Bethelhim. The Bible speaks of guarding our hearts, for out of it are the issues of life. Integrity areas are vital, as well as times of refreshing in the Lord.
3. They were disciplined in important areas of life. The dictionary defines discipline as “training that develops self-control, character or orderliness and efficiency.” In order to finish well we must be self-controlled and channel our energy in a certain direction. Discipline for intimacy’s sake, for growth’s sake, for ministry’s sake, for Christ’s sake. - this includes prayer, Bible study, fasting, tithing, etc.
4. They maintained a positive learning attitude throughout their lives. Learn something new every day, continue to be inquisitive and curious, be a reader. A leader is a reader. Learn a new hobby and develop it.
5. They had a group of friends and leaders and several important mentors during their lifetime. People who spoke into their lives, encouraging them in the Lord and who cared for their lives.
The goal is not just to finish, but to finish well. Not just at life’s end, but each day, each month, and each year. We could add a 6th characteristic of those who finish well. I believe these people help others to finish well too.

“COME WITH ME BY YOURSELVES TO A QUIET PLACE AND GET SOME REST.” - MARK 6:31
Youth With a MissionGoa, India
OUR VISION IS TO SEE GOD’S SERVANTS FIND REST, REFRESHMENT AND RENEWAL AS THEY DRAW APART FROM THE PRESSURES OF LIFE TO SEEK THE LORD ON AN INTIMATE LEVEL.
Bethel Retreat House is a comfortable, home like setting provides sacred space for adult guests who desire to experience quiet and solitude. It offers hospitality, beauty to nourish one’s spirit, and encouragement to listen to the Lord. Bethel is a place of new life, where disciples are nurtured and affirmed in their relationship with Jesus.
Bethel is not a guest house or a place for vacations and holidays, but a warm and welcoming place set aside for a personal encounter with God. It’s available for teams, to finish their outreaches to unwind and debrief; as well as process their experiences before they go back. We offer guided retreats for individuals and small groups as well as re-entry and debriefing. It is convenient for short seminars and training programs for small groups.

FINISH WELL
FIELD WORKERS
vPNk vUr djus esa LFkkuh; dk;ZdrkZvksa dh lgk;rk djuk
I have been with Youth With a Mission since 1978, having served in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, in Budapest, Hungary, in Kathmandu, Nepal and in Pune and Goa in India. But most of my time has been in South Asia, living more than 22 years in India and Nepal. Much of my
experience has been in member care and staff development for church planters and other long-term workers, and I am currently leading Bethel Retreat House in Goa, a specialised kind of member care ministry.
Several months ago, while I was in the High-Tech City area of Hyderabad, I noticed a large billboard with a picture of a young couple. The caption on the billboard caught my attention: “When is the best time to have a heart attack?” The answer? - “40% of heart attacks are between the ages of 25-35.” And then was listed the name and phone number of a hospital in Hyderabad. What a shocking statistic.
Still stunned by this billboard, the next day I mentioned what I had seen to a young professional woman from Odisha, in her twenties, who was on her way to Mumbai. She was not at all surprised or taken aback at what I related. In fact, she told me that two weeks earlier her own cousin died of a heart attack at age 22!
However, I personally, am still reeling from that conversation and that billboard. It is well documented that busy lifestyles, unhealthy eating habits, lack of exercise, and high stress jobs all contribute to heart attacks, stroke, diabetes, and other health problems that we are seeing in India.
WHAT IS THE SITUATION AMONG CHRISTIAN WORKERS IN INDIA? How do we fare? Are Christians having some of the same health issues? Sad to say, yes, we are seeing the same kinds of things.

One Christian leader told a new team member that in Christian ministry, “it is a 24 hour, 7 day a week job. We’re always on call and ready to serve.” The staff person listened and then respectfully requested to have one day off a week, which was granted. The team leader continued with his own stressful lifestyle, ignoring health problems, and he subsequently died of a heart attack in his mid-fifties.
In an article from Missionary Upholder’s Trust magazine, there was a list of missionaries who had been “called home.” Out of 15 deaths, 5 of them were due to heart attacks. They ranged in ages from 38 (massive heart attack) to 42, 44, 45 and 56. I was stunned to read of how young these field workers were. I am saddened that some of these deaths could possibly have been prevented, with regular health checks, taking rest, and days off, and times of renewal and refreshment.
Travelling around South Asia I’ve visited a large number of teams, individuals, and couples on site. I’ve been shocked and saddened over the years to see the health problems, the burnout, the interpersonal conflicts, the discouragement, and the personal and family problems of these dear people. Some of them have left the field because of these issues.
HELPING LEADERS FINISH WELL - BETHEL RETREAT HOUSEAbout 8 years ago, a vision re-emerged in my heart to do something to prevent some of these problems, so that our workers can finish strong and finish well in their ministries. This vision birthed Bethel Retreat House, a place especially for Christian workers for rest, refreshment, retreats, and personal spiritual renewal. My passion is to see field workers rest and take time away from their responsibilities for personal refreshment and spiritual renewal so that they finish well! I’m using all my energy to promote spiritual retreats, rest, and days of reflection and prayer as a means to thriving and finishing well.

My job in India is to lead a retreat house for Christian workers so that weary ones can have a place to come and seek the Lord.
The Bible is filled with many examples of rest, refreshment and retreat, in both the Old and New Testaments. God wants to refresh His people. It is in His heart that they not be bowed down by cares, stresses, and burdens. Jesus said that He has come that we might have life and have it to the full. (John 10:10). Full life includes rest and refreshment.
1 Kings 19:1-18In this passage, Elijah had just experienced a spiritual victory over the prophets of Baal. Queen Jezebel gave a death threat to Elijah, which deeply frightened him. He told the Lord, “I’ve had enough.” He had experienced so much opposition, he just felt that he couldn’t take any more. So he fell asleep. God sent an angel to touch him and tell him to get up and eat. He ate and drank and then lay down again.
Here we see a man who had worked hard in the spiritual battle, had experienced victory, and subsequently became quite frightened when his life was threatened. Elijah’s response was to run away and to sleep. This is a very common response to those who are overworked and oppressed in spiritual warfare. But the antidote given by the angel was to touch him and say, “Get up and eat.” Good food after a good rest was what helped him. He lay down again after eating and drinking (vs. 6).
Then twice he went into a cave (I Kings. 19:9 and 13). Both of those times the Lord came and spoke with him, encouraging him. When people are depressed, they may at times want to retreat to a “cave,” wanting to hide and just be alone. But the

Lord spoke to Elijah both times: “What are you doing here, Elijah?” (vs. 9 and vs. 13.). Elijah answered that he had been very zealous, he felt so alone, and that he was the only one left. The Lord said to him in both cases, “Go.” In verse 11 it was “Go out and stand on the mountain in the presence of the Lord, for the Lord is about to pass by.” And again in vs. 15 “Go back the way you came…” and then He told Elijah was he was about to do.
What lessons can we learn about rest, retreat, and renewal from this passage? There are several.
1After a tremendous victory in our lives, we can experience increased harassment and opposition. I’m
wondering if Elijah was tired and thus when he was threatened, he was afraid and ran.
2It’s okay to rest when we are tired. It might even be that an angel of the Lord will touch us while we are sleeping!
3It is important to get good food. Eating and drinking are a means of being renewed and restored when we are down
spiritually and emotionally (vs. 6 and vs. 8). Fresh fruit and vegetables are important in maintaining good health.
Elijah was depressed after his spiritual battle. His reality was distorted (vs. 4, 10 and 14) He said such things as “I am no better than my ancestors.” And, “I am the only one left.”
4Even when life seems distorted and we want to retreat to a “cave,” the Lord can speak to us and bring
encouragement and strength. God said to him: “Go out and stand on the mountain in the presence of the Lord, for the Lord is about to pass by” (vs 11). And vs. 18 “Go back the way you came, …I reserve seven thousand in Israel – all whose knees have not bowed down to Baal and all whose mouths have not kissed him.” So when we are in a spiritual cave, the Lord often speaks to us to come out, and then He can speak again to go back to our own place, with renewed strength, having heard the Word of the Lord.
5Elijah got a new co-worker, someone who could share the load with him. Elijah asked Elisha to join him, and then
mentored him, and poured his life into his younger disciple, eventually passing on the mantle of spiritual authority to him.
It is my heart that all in ministry would find time to be renewed and restored, and that they would live life to the fullest, as God intended.

W e are created for love and for relationship. Marriage is one of, if not THE closest human relationship between two individuals. This ‘closeness’ however, does not happen automatically and has to be worked at. Marriage is under tremendous attack
in our society today. There is an alarming rise in the divorce/separation rate. Living in an ever-increasing consumer society, the attitude towards ‘throwaway’ marriages isn’t an alien one. Those who do get married are finding it increasingly difficult to stay married and ‘finish well.’ So how can we work towards not just surviving in our marriages but rather experiencing first hand growing and thriving ones and in turn being able to facilitate others the same way? We would like to explore two possible areas:

Pre-emptive measuresMARRIAGE PREPARATION (for engaged couples)
When we want to learn a new skill (driving a car, operating a computer) we take lessons. Sadly when it comes to marriage, very few steps are taken to acquire new skills or to sharpen the skills already there. The church at large has taken a back seat in the past, and yet there seems to be a slow yet steady growth in awareness in the importance of marriage preparation. Whether an arranged alliance or a ‘love marriage’, the truth is that the feelings of being in love will eventually wear off. Marriage prep gives an opportunity to get to know each other on a deeper level, to learn about our backgrounds, our values growing up,
and our goals for the future. It gives an opportunity to share what commitment means to us individually and a chance to look together and discuss the marriage vows. Other issues that could be explored include resolving conflict and handling anger effectively, dealing with finances, and building the sexual relationship to name a few. Exploring these and more issues together can help start the relationship on a strong foundation. We cannot stress enough the importance and benefits of planning and setting aside some preparation time before you get married!
In hindsight, before our own wedding 20 years back, we do wish we would have had a chance to sit with someone and have some input in terms of some basic marriage preparation and acquiring some basic skills. This could have possibly avoided some heartaches especially in the first years of learning to adapt and adjust with each other and our first child, who arrived soon after. We were given a number of books to read on marriage and family life but with the busyness and anticipation of getting married, they inevitably stayed on the bookshelf!

You might say “Our marriage is going well…” It might be, and good for you! However there is potential to make a good and healthy marriage even better. There is a concept that thinks,” After marriage, it is all downhill…” We do not agree. Yes there are pressures on every marriage. In the early years, as mentioned previously, the initial infatuation does wear off and you realize that your partner isn’t as perfect as you thought! If and when children arrive, this brings demands of its own, and often is a very exhausting time physically. Other couples may face the agony of not being able to conceive. The teenage years can be stormy and emotionally draining and the empty nest stage has a tug on the heart as well. Other common storms include sickness, financial hardship, ministry demands, and unfaithfulness, to mention a few. If we are honest, there are times when we think, ‘forget it…it is too difficult….I want out…’ So how do we make our marriage last a lifetime? What are the skills we need to integrate and reinforce to help enhance this God-ordained relationship?

• Spending regular quality time together – helps nurture understanding and romance
• Identifying specific ways in which your partner feels loved and proactively investing in those (love languages)
• Resolving conflict effectively and being able to forgive from the heart.
• Being able to relate in the best way possible with our parents/in laws as a family.
• Keeping sex alive all through marriage.
As someone said, “A marriage is somewhat like a car which needs to be serviced regularly to keep it running smoothly, and sometimes after a long stint it may even need an overhaul!”One of the challenges that we have had to work through has been how to manage our conflicts effectively or ‘fight fairly’. Our problem wasn’t explosive arguments as much as ‘cold wars’. There were times when we wouldn’t talk for days on end as a result of some conflict!! In fact about 6-7 years into our marriage, we did consider separation at one point and had to get help from outside. I (Regi) was very reluctant to seek help but did come to my senses as things were getting worse. We are still working on establishing new and effective patterns of resolving conflict, but it does get better over time as the skills become more an integral part of our communication styles.
Resource: For married couples - 7 sessions ‘Marriage Course’ run by Alpha. Check on the website www.alphaindia.org for more details or contact the Alpha office in Bangaluru to refer you to a facilitator in your area.
Over the years as we have been experiencing more healing and restitution in our own marriage, we are seeing Father use us to impart hope, encouragement, and life skills to help other couples and families within YWAM, the local church, and even families of other faiths. We do also help facilitate marriage/family seminars as and when we are able to.
RECOMMENDED READING ‘The Marriage Book’ authored by Nicky and Sila Lee. • How can we be happily married to one person for the
whole of our lives?• How do we resolve conflict?• How can we discover and rediscover sexual intimacy?• Full of practical advice, ‘The Marriage Book’ is easy to
read and is designed to prepare, build and even mend marriages.

I read this quote in the January 2009 issue of Reader’s digest ‘The heart is selfish, it does not sacrifice itself. Before it sends blood to the brain, lungs – anywhere – it sends blood to the coronary arteries. It feeds itself first so it is always there to keep pumping, no matter what. It is a good lesson
for many mothers, who sacrifice their own health for the sake of their children.’ Being a mother, the need to sacrifice is inevitable to a certain extent. But there are many mothers who sacrifice their health by not eating well, not resting enough and by not enjoying life. Take a look at the heart. It first supplies blood to itself then to other parts of the body. If the heart does not pump blood to coronary arteries first, the heart will die and eventually so will the whole body.
Eat Well MumThe culture of our society also influences the way we do things as a mother. A few years back the magazine India Today published a survey report on Indian women’s health. According to this report the health of almost seventy percent of Indian women was very poor compared to the health of Indian men. One of the reasons for that was because women gave the best of the food to the male member of the family and then ate whatever was leftover. Hopefully no mother is doing this. To properly care for their families, mothers need to eat well! Eating well does not mean a plateful of rice or many chapattis with a little chatni. In our culture we take a plateful of rice and in the corner of the plate we have a small amount of vegetables. The best would be to eat an equal amount of rice and vegetables. There are people who eat large amounts of meat and much less quantity of vegetables. Some eat food that is leaden with oil and some cook vegetables till you can’t tell the difference between a carrot and a cauliflower. It is important to learn to keep (or maintain) a well balanced diet. Our meals should consist of fruits, vegetables, proteins – meat, chana, rajmah, dhal and paneer, etc, and carbohydrates that come from rice and chapattis. Some people think that good food is eating a lot of meat, and it has to be cooked with ghee and with heavy spices. Mothers should learn about nutrition so that their families will be able to eat a healthy diet.

Rest Mum Rest Another way to take care of yourself is to make time to rest each day. I used to tell my children that if they did not allow me to rest, I would become a monster. Naturally nobody wants their mother to turn into a monster, so they would allow me to rest. This can be more challenging if the children are very small. But still you could make an arrangement with your husband or someone to look after your children while you take a nap. Remember, you need it to be more effective as a mother. There are times when the children do not take up our time, but then
we use that time trying to make our house spick and span, rather than to take some rest. It is alright to have an untidy home for a little while, but get that rest! It will help you to do your job better, and you won’t be cranky and whiny all the time. If the mother herself is tired and worn out, how would she take care of the child who comes home from school? Your husband too would want your attention when he comes home, so it is very important to rest up and look good before he comes home. Remember, you are like the heart of the family that needs to keep on pumping.
Exercise Mum ExerciseDo not sacrifice all of your time working. Make sure to put aside half an hour to forty-five minutes for physical exercises each day. "But I am busy the whole day with a lot of work!" you may say. I guarantee you there is nothing like having a good 45 minutes brisk walk to give you that extra energy, freshness of mind, and feeling of lightness in the body that helps you get through the day.
You will also sleep better, and this is a good way to de-stress yourself. Over all, exercise is very good for you. As a bonus you will not become fat and you will have better skin, which every woman desires.

Fun Time MumAnd last, but not least, get out of your house without your children and do something fun. It may be just window-shopping, or going to the movies with your friends or husband. Do something that you really like. What did you really enjoy doing before you became a mother and wife? Plan to do that a few times a month, at least. It is worth it because it will revitalize you and you will be able to be a better mother. Mothers, please do not sacrifice all of your food, time, rest, sleep and hobbies. By taking some time for yourself, you will be able to be a better mother, who has energy, physically, mentally and emotionally.
A Few Words To FathersI am sure you want your wife, the mother of your children, to function in the prime of her health and energy. So after you are fed well and taken care of, do not forget to check if your wife is eating well. See how you can help her to catch a little nap. Your wife is the lifeline of your family. Do not allow her to sacrifice unnecessarily. Eating a balanced diet, getting rest, exercise and a break from her daily chores are very important things for her. If you help her do these things, she will love you more and you will be grateful to yourself that you are taking care of her in this way.

MANALI (HIMACHAL PRADESH, NORTH INDIA)
05My calling took a priority above all else – for
HOW HAVE THE SKILLS YOU LEARNED IN YWAM HELPED YOU IN YOUR WORK TODAY?
‘Worship and Intercession’. During the intercession school, I really got a heart for my nation. I saw India as a ‘worshipping nation.’ While Andy Byrd, founder of the Fire and Fragrance DTS, was sharing about revivals taking place all around the world, I became numb. When I opened my eyes, I was in India, though I was physically in the class in Germany. God took me for a walk in India. I could feel the heat, could smell it, Could feel my footsteps. I was brought to my own city, Hubli, and there the Lord told me to start a house of prayer - 24/7. I didn’t understand what God was speaking to me about. He shared with me about an open heaven in India through worship and intercession. After class I went back to my room to pray. That same evening, Sean Feucht (the founder of BURN 24/7) knocked on my door. I shared the vision with him that I just had had that day. He said “Hey, bro, why don’t you do BURNs in India?”
I prayed about it. I saw a BURN promo on Youtube. It says on their website "Burn 24/7 is a movement of burning hearts all across the globe returning back to their first love and then taking that love to the nations. Our core is communities unifying around the Presence of God for ’burns‘ consisting of 12 to 100 hours of nonstop worship and prayer at least once per month.” When I saw that, it moved my heart. I was in tears. I prayed, asking the Lord, I want to see this 24/7 worship happen in India. So I came back to India in 2009 and started BURN in India. I have been serving full-time with BURN since 2009.
