These are the results of over 150 local authorities' member induction programmes set against a benchmark of a best practice checklist available from www.21stCenturyCouncillor.com/tests. The results were presented to Capital Ambitions one day conference on member induction for 2010 elections in London.TRANSCRIPT

x14 responses say their council doesn't offer any kind of 'day one' basic support, like tour of building, carparking, security passes or email
x12 don't provide IT facilities
x6 don't issue induction packs
x4 don't take photos
X 40 don't introduce new members to the CX or service heads
x106 offer PDP's to their members
x 71 facilitate political mentoring
x 45 offer ward/division 'walks' with officers and members
x 36 run sessions on effective opposition / administration
x 101 provide detailed information at ward level
x 87 provide guidance on community leadership roles
x 92 encourage members to go to regional and national conferences and events
x 118 convene a member development steering group
x 135 review all induction materials after election
x 136 incorporate views of members into the ongoing induction plan
