OUR MISSION STATEMENTThe Chamber is a not for profit, action oriented business organization

incorporated to (1) promote a favorable business climate for its membership

and community; (2) work with other interested organizations to develop

effective mechanisms for taking action on issues of community interest; and

(3) provide business leadership for improvement of the economy, political

environment and quality of life.

When we look back over 100 years of business and life in Greater Fort Lauderdale, your Chamber has been a beacon of connectivity and leadership. First called the Board of Trade, the Greater Fort Lauderdale Chamber of Commerce has matured into an organization with the collective strength of its investors.

Our reach extends internationally as our position in the global economy expands. Now the largest cruise port in the world with an ever expanding cargo base, Port Everglades’ economic impact is vast. Over $14 billion is generated annually, impacting more than 140,000 Florida jobs.

Beyond international expansion, our Chamber is continuing its efforts to make Greater Fort Lauderdale the place for commerce. Regulatory reform, workforce and education development, and transportation solutions equate to employment retention and expansion.

While we remain a top tourist destination and continue to nurture our marine industry, we are ripe for diversification through targeted industries. Our regional business partners, like the Greater Fort Lauderdale Economic Alliance, the Broward Workshop, the Regional Business Alliance and Riverwalk Trust, coupled with our public sector partners—Fort Lauderdale, Weston, Oakland Park, Wilton Manors, Broward County, and the Downtown Development Authority, position us for the next century and a legacy of sustainable growth.

To our active Chamber investors, thank you for your continued support and belief in our mission. We wouldn’t be where we are without you. To those considering being part of the future with us, we are honored and encourage you will be part of our next century.

Sincerely,

Daniel H. Lindblade, CAE President & CEO

Officially, Jen Klaassens is vice president of programs at The Wasie Foundation, a family philanthropic organization that provides grants and support to Broward nonprofits focused on health care, children’s medical problems and education. She’s the go-to person for nonprofits in Broward County, the connector who brings together people in business and charities to boost funding, services and collaboration for the good of the community. But you’ll also find her leading a monthly meeting of 100-plus nonprofit leaders at the Fort Lauderdale Chamber of Commerce, serving on nonprofit boards, sponsoring events and lunching with executives. Plus, she recently trekked part of Mount Everest to help raise funds and awareness to fight human trafficking. Here’s an edited interview with the 40-year-old dynamo, who retains her Texas twang.

Q. Why is it important to connect businesses with nonprofits?People want to connect, but they often don’t know where to go. I classify myself as a Match.com version of volunteerism and engagement. It’s so much easier to get involved when someone can offer an introduction. We’re trying to build win-win partnerships. A for-profit can give a nonprofit time, talent and energy and open a network of opportunities for their own business. You get to know people on the nonprofit’s board of directors, which hopefully can lead to a successful business relationship. And the nonprofit gets the for-profit’s expertise, services and experience.

For example, I introduced 211 Broward, the social services hotline, and Dan Rubenstein, who has a gourmet coffee business, Just Java. Dan donated his coffee for a 211 breakfast for 250 community leaders, who did not know the product. From that, he went on a 211 site tour, fell in love with the organization and offered his expertise to create and develop their website — just from a simple introduction. You never know where a relationship can go, and if a nonprofit fosters that relationship properly, the sky is the limit.

Q. Why are those connections not fostered more?Just as in the for-profit world, there’s a sense of competition in the nonprofit world: “This is my donor. I can’t introduce you. We can’t share the wealth.” But to be a smart and strong sector, you have to collaborate. There’s unfortunately a lot of duplication of services in the nonprofit world in Broward County. And obviously, there’s not enough money or funders, so you have to learn to work together and share resources and ideas.

The monthly nonprofit breakfast we hold has allowed people in nonprofits to get to know each other, not as organizations but as people. When you know people, you can pick up the phone and ask. Now, we have people bouncing ideas off each other and working together.

Q. What trends do you see in non-profits in Broward County? There’s a different way to engage the younger generation and speak to them. They are definitely more social-media driven and cause-related. They want to know the story before they open their checkbook. Broward is an event-driven community. You can go to a charity event every day of the week, come season. The challenge is to get away from the chicken-dinner concept and still raise funds and awareness. There is such a thing as event fatigue.

In the Minneapolis area, where The Wasie Foundation is based, it’s different, not so event-driven. There are about 20 Fortune 500 companies based there. In Broward, we have one: AutoNation. When you have 20 Fortune 500 CEOs, you get the trickle down of their leadership, their executives getting involved with the community, their pro-bono services. ... It’s a big ripple effect. Q. What is the focus of your work at The Wasie Foundation? We fund nonprofits helping medically fragile children — schizophrenia, arthritis and cancer. My big push is schizophrenia and mental health. In mental health, we’re still kind of caught in the ‘60s, where no one is talking about it. I’m on the board of Henderson Behavioral Health and co-chairing their gala this year.

Q. How was it to climb to the base camp of Mount Everest in Nepal for charity?Craziest thing I have ever done in my entire life, and also the most rewarding — mentally, spiritually and physically. It’s amazing how far you can push yourself when you’re doing it for an amazing reason.

Businesses will be happy if 2014’s economic growth is as robust as this year’s has been, according to a report by the Greater Fort Lauderdale Chamber of Commerce’s Council of Economic Advisors.

Fort Lauderdale-area businesses will be happy if 2014’s economic growth is as robust as this year’s has been, according to the latest quarterly report by the Greater Fort Lauderdale Chamber of Commerce’s Council of Economic Advisors. “A lot of them felt that business is so much better this year than last year,” Richard Clark, chairman of the council, said of the April-June report released Thursday.

Higher long-term interest rates are a concern for only 24 percent of businesses surveyed. Most expect to post the same or higher revenue growth next year as they did in 2013. They anticipate little or no impact from federally mandated budget cuts or the one-year delay in having to comply with the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare.

The Council of Economic Advisors comprises 25 CEOs and other top executives in industries including restaurants, hotels, construction, banking, medical and advertising. The group meets quarterly to discuss the economy and reports its findings to the Federal Reserve.

Nearly 60 percent of businesses executives surveyed said they have no plans to change their borrowing decisions, even as the Fed raises long-term interest rates. One reason: Many businesses owners said they have set aside cash due to the uncertain economy, lessening the need for financing.

Keith Costello, president of Broward Bank of Commerce & Chair of the Chamber’s Downtown Council, said higher rates aren’t impacting loan demand at his bank. But, “we’ve got a long way to go until have real demand and real job growth,” Costello said, adding that the fact most council members are bullish on growth is reassuring.

Survey respondents said they expect revenue growth to be either the same (47 percent) or higher (53 percent) in 2014 compared to this year. Sixty-three percent said that over the next two to three years, they foresee higher growth. Thirty-one percent expect the same rate of growth. Only 6 percent anticipate lower growth. Sixty-nine percent reported they are confident in the outlook for their business, while 13 percent said they were “very confident” and 18 percent “not confident.” A whopping 73 percent expect no impact on hiring because of the one-year extension until 2015 of the full implementation of Obamacare.

While the residential and commercial real estate sectors are improving, a lack of available industrial space for manufacturing and warehousing is a concern, said Dan Lindblade, president of the Greater Fort Lauderdale Chamber of Commerce.

And while tourism has been strong, the CEOs are “seeing a softness in group bookings,” he said.Clark, the council president and an executive leadership coach, said with the economic recovery, local companies are finding it’s more difficult to find good talent, and are starting to steal top workers from each other. “We feel that companies are going to have to do a better job talking to their top talent. The war for talent is going to continue,” he said. By Marcia Heroux Pounds, Sun Sentinel

GREATER FORT LAUDERDALE CHAMBER OF COMMERCETESTIMONIALS FROM NON PROFIT BUSINESSESThe Pantry of Broward has been a member of the Fort Lauderdale Chamber of Commerce for 4 years now. And each year as we renew our membership, we learn more of how our Chamber is there to support not just nonprofits, but all of our community. Networking Groups, the Jen K Non Profit Breakfast (best deal in town), Business After Hours Cocktail parties, classes and seminars and the list goes on. The Pantry is only as good as the support we receive, and thanks to the Fort Lauderdale Chamber of Commerce we are GREAT. The contacts that we have made, the relationships, and the hands on attitude of the staff at the Chamber make our jobs a little bit easier, knowing we can count on them.

Keep up the great work.Terrence SmalleyDirector of Marketing & Online Services, The Pantry of Broward

Trustee membership at the Greater Fort Lauderdale Chamber of Commerce is the source for Angel’s Pediatric Heart House brand recognition in the community. I can say without hesitation that the personal and business relationships built were started through many Chamber members. The Chamber offers many quality opportunities, such as Leadership Fort Lauderdale, the Nonprofit Business and Breakfast and its many networking opportunities to forge new business relationships and collaborations. It is truly the pulse of the Broward business community!

Membership with the Greater Fort Lauderdale Chamber of Commerce is essential to any business, but is particularly vital to a nonprofit organization. Gilda’s Club South Florida has been actively involved with the Chamber since we opened our doors almost 15 years ago. Actively participating in the many opportunities the Chamber offers not only helps to increase name recognition for our organization, but also helps to grow potential partnerships. Through our involvement in the Chamber, we have partnered with other Chamber members on projects ranging from website redesign to photography services, have found new supporters and volunteers, and have even created relationships with other nonprofit organizations.

CEO Shelley Goren regularly participates in the Women’s Council Meetings while Development staff members Elisabeth Glynn and Kim Kohl participate in the monthly Nonprofit Committee Meetings, are members of the Power Partners Leads Group, and often attend additional Chamber functions including Biz Perks and Net @ Noon. Gilda’s Club has also hosted both the Power Partners Leads Group as well as LBGX group at the clubhouse. In addition, Gilda’s Club South Florida was awarded 2013 Small Business Of The Year – Nonprofit Organization by the Greater Fort Lauderdale Chamber of Commerce for “outstanding business practices and success.” Elisabeth GlynnDevelopment Coordinator, Gilda’s Club South Florida

Joining the Fort Lauderdale Chamber of Commerce has been one of the best investments we’ve made, and one of the most effective tools we’ve had to connect with area businesses that can provide support, affordable business solutions and key contacts. They provide so many opportunities for networking, friend-building and strategic partnerships that have all translated into solutions and savings for our organization. It’s also been a great way to meet new friends and prospective colleagues. Definitely worth the price of membership, no matter what profession you are in! Jaye AbbatePresident/CEO, ArtServe, Inc. Chamber membership facilitates connections we would simply not make in any other way. It is an important part of our efforts to remain abreast of community developments and challenges, and helps us nurture partnerships that make Broward better. Thor BarracloughVice President of Marketing & Communications, Community Foundation of Broward

Being a member of the Greater Fort Lauderdale Chamber of Commerce has helped our small non-profit immensely. We have attended numerous networking events, the most beneficial being the monthly non-profit meeting. By being able to identify and meet with other non-profits in the community has helped our organization find partners, donations, and potential sponsors. Another great benefit was being a part of the Small Business of the Year Awards & Summit. The nomination and award was an honor and we enjoyed being able to be a part of the process. All of the staff that we have worked with has been incredibly friendly and helpful. Joining the Chamber of Commerce as a non-profit has definitely been worth it.

My name is Jim and I have the privilege of representing The Salvation Army of Broward County Adult Rehabilitation Center throughout Broward County including the Greater Fort Lauderdale Chamber of Commerce. As I have mentioned to many nonprofits throughout Broward County, if there is any Chamber you need to join and any meeting that is a must, it is the Greater Fort Lauderdale Chamber of Commerce nonprofit meeting. I have said many times, just come as a guest the first time and you will soon agree that this monthly meeting is an absolute necessity.

Ms. Jen Klaassens has one of the biggest hearts of any individual I have ever met. Jen is fair, respectful of your time and wants what is best for each and every one of us. With 1.5 to 1.8 million nonprofits in this country, collaboration and teamwork among all three sectors (public, private, nonprofit) is essential for all of us to do the best for this country and for the individual communities and clients we serve. Ms. Klaassens is continually connecting organizations and people that have the potential to benefit each other. For those who care, want to share , this is exactly where you need to be every month.
