AWARDS AND BURSARIES Please list any awards or bursaries presented by your committee in 2015 and indicate any which will be open for nomination/application in 2016.
Other information/comments:
RSC-WC appointed a new executive council (EC) in April 2015. There were fresh appointments to
the post of Chairman (Prof. Girjesh Govil), Vice-Chairman (Prof. Suvarn Kulkarni), Secretary (Dr.
Ravindra Venkatramani), Treasurer (Prof. Ramakrishna G. Bhat) and EC members (Dr. Nitin Patil).
With the exception of Prof. Girjesh Govil and Prof. Deepa Khushalani, all other members were
serving in the RSC local section for the first time. The transition delayed the allocation of RSC
funds, as the new committee revisited events and the budget set by the outgoing EC. Finally RSC
funds arrived only by August 2015 and the first event was organized by RSC-WIS during the same
month at Vaze College. Despite the late start RSC-WIS has been able to setup 13 events for the
financial year April 2015 – March 2016 as listed above. Detailed reports and pictures of RSC-WIS
events are attached at the end of this document. A couple of highlights are mentioned in the
following paragraphs.
In 2015 RSC-WIS has made a concerted effort to reach out to college teachers and students in the
interior areas of the section. As part of this effort outreach events were organized at Jalgaon,
Maharashtra (North Maharashtra University) and Raipur, Chattisgarh (Pt. Ravi Shankar Shukla
University). Eminent chemists from all over India and the local section participated and enaged
with over 300 participants from interior areas through lectures and training workshops. Through
the events, participants were exposed to the latest advances in chemistry and chemical
technology in terms of research topics, instrumentation, and national facilities. Participants were
also made aware of online RSC resources and the role of RSC in promoting science education and
outreach through its local sections.
Over the year the new EC has worked together well as a team, coordinating diverse events which
span the West India region. The EC has streamlined procedures to transparantely review
proposals for events and allocation of budget per event. Since October, the EC has adopted a
tech-savvy approach to conduct meetings via Video-Conferencing (VC) link between TIFR, IIT-
Bombay, and IISER-Pune. The VC link has significantly cut down on travel and hospitality costs,
thereby optimizing the use of RSC funds for outreach activities. The VC link has also facilitated
member participation in meetings with tremendous savings in time and effort.
In the coming year, we hope to diversify the EC further, including industry and student
representatives. We will continue our mission to promote outreach in interior parts of the region
adding new areas to our existing base.

COLLABORATION
The issue of communication and collaboration between all member networks has been raised by members at recent events including the regional meetings and the general assembly. There have been instances of committees running very similar events when, had they known about their shared interests, they would have preferred to work together and to share their experiences. As all of the networks cover such a broad range of topics it would be helpful if you could complete the following information to assist staff in proposing potential collaborations. Please include the topic of an event which you would consider collaborating on with another committee and the contact name for that area (if left blank we will assume that the contact is the Secretary). To facilitate communication if you are happy for us to pass your contact email on to the appropriate person to discuss potential collaboration please indicate below. This information will be shared with all other member network committees.
