Greetings Carrollwood Members,

I don’t know about you but I am quickly becoming more excited about our upcoming months. A drop in temperatures, some dryer weather, and an increase in activity at the country club and of course football season is here. Yes, I know I am probable rushing the weather thing but please work with me.

The recent weather has been a good test for our facility exposing our strengths and weaknesses on and off the golf course. Our golf course has proven to drain much better than most golf courses around us. The wet weather also has enforced the need for improvements to our golf course sand bunkers and drainage around our clubhouse. Due to damage from weather we were forced to replace part of our security system in the Recreation Center, and the main Clubhouse. In addition we replaced damaged sound amplifiers for the interior and exterior clubhouse music, and a burnt out sump pump under the clubhouse that protects us from flooding in the cart staging area. The addition of the golf mats on the driving range allowed us to reopen the practice facility following each major rain earlier than normal. Without the mats we would have been forced to remain closed or run the risk of creating additional damage to the practice tee that would have taken multiple weeks to heal.

I would like to take this opportunity to voice my appreciation to our membership that has played golf during the recent tough weeks of weather. I have been very impressed how our members have followed the difficult cart path only requirements when playing. By doing this we have been able to continue to play golf while avoiding additional damage to the wet turf. As you know it only takes one golf cart leaving the path under our recent wet conditions to create major damage. Thank you for your cooperation.

Carrollwood Country Club continues to be a great place to be a part of and we have some exciting things planned for the upcoming months. As always please let me know if I can assist you in any way. I look forward to seeing you at the country club.

Thank you,

Golf news

It has been one wet and hot summer! It’s tough enough to enjoy golf in the summer heat, but the rain this year made it impossible! I was beginning to think about building an ark in my backyard!

The WGA’s “WILD ABOUT GOLF” Sip and Socialize will kick off our season on September 10th from 5:00-6:30 PM in the Emerald Room. For new members of the CCC, please come join us and meet the WGA board and all our members for a very pleasant evening. For the existing members, we look forward to catching up on your summer adventures, reminiscing about past events and viewing the picture albums.

On 6/8/15 our team played the first of our six matches in Nassau. CCC was fortunate to win 9.5 to 2.5 over Temple Terrace. Cheval won 9.5 to 2.5 over Hunters Green. Quail Hollow won 9 to 3 over Lakes of Bernadette. The last two Summer Nassau tournaments were canceled due to RAIN! The games were rescheduled for the 17th and 20th of August. We are still in the running to win!

Our opening day for the WGA this year is September 17th and we look forward to another year of fun and games. This year’s theme for Opening Day will be “Swing with Bling”. The cost is $35.00 per person which includes golf, lunch and prizes. The format will be a scramble with teams arranged by the Pro Shop.

Halloween is always a fun event with the Orange Ball Game and our annual Holiday party is one event you cannot miss! Of course everyone looks forward to the annual Member-Guest tournament usually held in April.

Our new 2015 -2016 WGA Board welcomes everyone back this season and encourages anyone wishing to join the league with an established handicap of 40 or less to join us! We have a lot of fun, great events and it’s a pleasant way to make new friends! Please contact Kathy McGlone to join. Kathy’s e-mail is [email protected] or call/text her on her cell, 813-810-1829. The cost to join the league is $55.00 annually. We play 18 holes every Thursday and Saturday morning from September 17th through the end of May.

Don’t forget to come and join us for our Wild About Golf Sip and Socialize Cocktail party on September 10th from 5:00-6:30 PM in the Emerald Room.

I constantly get the question, how much rain did we receive yesterday or last night. The amazing answer to that question is, we received 37 inches between July 3rd and August 20th. As many of you already know the golf courses are very wet and in many areas unable to drain due to the high lake levels. Fortunately the turf conditions of the golf courses have held up well.  Of the damage that was created from the wet weather we have been able to complete most repairs in house.  Please be patient with us as we all get through the remainder of this rainy season. It has certainly been a wet one.

We are finishing up with our last rotation for aerification of the putting surfaces. This should be completed by the first week of September and we should expect to reap the benefits created from the process through next May. Our putting surfaces continue to be very healthy and in good condition. This is mainly due to our aggressive summer aerification program. As a result of this program we have experienced no disease or fungus issues that can be created when dealing with the high temperatures and wet weather we have experienced.

From the Golf Course SuperintendentI know that some of you have given me examples of courses that only aerify once or not at all and asked why we aerify so much. My response to that comment is we aerify here three times during the summer months because we have too.  The aerification process creates much needed air circulation within the root system and allows both air and moisture to reach the roots of the grass. The great drainage that we have recently benefitted from is partially due to this process. Its certainly is not because I want too or my staff wants too.  The aerification process is extremely laborious and quite frankly not something that I enjoy doing but I do know the negatives do not outweigh the positives.

If you would like to discuss any of our Agronomic practices that we perform on the course, my office door is always open. I will be happy to answer any questions you may have. See you on the course.

One of the most important things a tennis player can learn in order to maximize his or her game is to learn how to how to effectively use their opposite hitting hand -- the right hand for the lefty / the left hand of a righty. Most top players use it extensively while lower level players usually do not use it all.

An “active” non-hitting hand actually moves and does the following:1. Keeps the racket head up and ready2. Changes grips3. Insures a proper wrist position before the hit4. Sets the angle of the racket face before the hit allowing the player to correct repetitive errors.

A “cosmetic” non-hitting hand doesn’t do anything -- it just holds the racket.Players with cosmetic non-hitting hands usually don’t acknowledge the wrong angle of the racket face as the main reason for missing the shot. They usually blame the mistake on non factors such as not watching the ball, not bending the knees, not taking the racket back, being too close to the ball, etc... As a result the real mistake -- the angle -- is never corrected and real legitimate improvement is never achieved. They remain stuck at the same level year after year.

Activate Your Non-Hitting Hand and Improve Your Game Immediately

Ineffective stroke lessons and practices, in my opinion, are ones where angles and angle corrections are not addressed. Its like teaching someone how to drive a car without mentioning the steering wheel!

To make sure you have an “active angle correcting non-hitting hand,” take a tennis lesson with any Carrollwood Country Club Tennis Professional between September 1st and November 1st and get 50% off your lesson! Have fun improving!!

Tennis News:

Our “summer” tennis will be over by the time you see this article. Team Tennis had a tough time playing their matches with all of the rain we had - Chris will report the final standings. Leagues are starting or have started by now.

Our Monday Ladies USTA 6.5 Combo league will be starting in September; Our Tuesday Suncoast League just started September 1st so no scores to report yet!  Same with our other leagues, which are:Wednesday - ALOT league and Interbay both started August 26th.The C5 group (USTA Ladies 3.5 night time league) won’t begin until Spring 2016, as well as our USTA Ladies 4.0 Friday morning league.

Our Men’s Leagues continue to stay active and are working on having two Combo leagues representing CCC in the fall - a 7.5 and 8.5 league. First Friday tennis socials will begin in September as well.

Always a busy time at our CCC tennis courts - and our Captains always remind me to ask - if anyone is interested in subbing on any of our leagues, please contact Tennis Director Chris Cary and he will point you to the appropriate captains.  Also, we have many working members who enjoy coming to the courts in the evening for some “fun” night play. If interested, please come join the group!

Will keep you posted in  the next newsletter for updated scores of our leagues.  Come enjoy some good food and fun at the Club as well with your tennis friends.

Good tennis everyone!

CONDO • RESORT

We’ve just completed a successful summer here at the Resort with strong occupancy numbers mixed with terric guest experiences. e heavy rains weren’t enough to keep our guests down as many of them enjoyed all of the amenities that Carrollwood Country Club has to oer. As I’ve

said in the past, we can’t thank you enough for being so welcoming and inviting to them. It really does give them a sense of belonging and helps to welcome them to this fabulous Country Club!

Along those lines, I am proud to announce that our Resort is currently ranked #1 (out of 160) on TripAdvisor.com for overall guest satisfaction. TripAdvisor takes into

account several factors to create this ranking, but mostly it is based on the comments and scoring of our recent guests. We’ve enjoyed being ranked at the top for several years now which is a credit

to both the Resort as well as the Club employees!

Did you know that Emerald Greens Condo Resort is a member of the Stash Hotel Rewards program? Stash Hotel Rewards is a frequent stay redemption company that gives its members the

opportunity to earn points towards free stays when they stay at Stash properties. All of their hotels have a TripAdvisor.com ranking in the top 15% of their respective markets. It’s free to join as a member and there are no restrictions, fees or dues associated with it. Best of all, your member

rate here at the resort helps contribute towards earning a free stay! If any of you have questions about Stash Rewards or how to become a member, feel free to visit their website at

www.stashrewards.com.

As you can see, we have quite a lot going on here at the Resort. We’d love to have you be a part of it, so please give us a call if there is ever anything we can do for you. Don’t forget that as a

member of CCC you are entitled to discounted nightly rates for you and your guests.

See you around the Club!Brent
