Introduction

Member recognition is a critical part of what we do at Life Saving Victoria (LSV). There are several reasons why this is so: to celebrate great contributions and achievements; to showcase our values and the things that are possible; and to say thanks to those who give selflessly to others.

To recognise and acknowledge those individuals who have made an outstanding voluntary contribution to the lifesaving movement, LSV has adopted a range of awards.

This manual identifies awards available through LSV. Each of the awards is designed to recognise the efforts of those who devote countless hours week in week out, year after year to provide a safe and enjoyable environment at all levels of lifesaving. Recognition is available for all LSV personnel; this includes club members, service members, LSV’s associates, staff and supporters.

The manual has been prepared by the Honours and Awards Committee and endorsed by the LSV Board of Directors. I take the opportunity to acknowledge the significant contributions made by those who have developed, contributed and/or advanced the aims and objectives of this manual to create awareness of recognition, encourage participation in the award scheme and lift the profile of LSV and its volunteers, staff and supporters.

I encourage all members to support the recognition of the great contributions made by members and supporters of the organisation by using this manual.

Overview The LSV Members Recognition Manual provides a clear and sound understanding of awards available for member recognition. The awards recognition program is to:

increase the awareness of available recognition awards outline the requirements and criteria of awards outline the application processes and due dates provide award information and presentation details provide guidance on the nomination process

Award Summaries

This Recognition Manual outlines each award and provides a description of the award, the selection criteria, due dates, selection processes and presentation. Electronic Nomination

Where required, electronic nomination forms must be completed and submitted as below:

Submitted by a Club Committee, Club Member, Council Executive members or by an individual member of LSV

Selection criteria addressed and answered Supporting documents e.g: qualifications, awards and digital photos are included in the nomination Submitted to LSV by due date

Note: The relevant Club President will be notified of received nominations Due Dates

The awards have a specific due date to align with internal due dates and to comply with external schedules. Due dates have been selected to ensure nominations are submitted and processed prior to the Awards of Excellence evening. The specific due dates will be advised each year as part of the circulated information on each award.

Nominations received after the advertised closing date will not be considered.

Nominations

Nominations will be called for annually. LSV members will be notified via Club Mail, Circular, Social Media and advertised on the LSV website. Personal details within the nomination form will be kept confidential. LSV’s communication and PR team may use the information from the nomination to promote the award and recognise the winners utilising various media platforms.


Presentation of Awards

LSV annually conducts a range of functions to recognise the members who have made an outstanding contribution to the delivery and development of lifesaving activities.

The Awards of Excellence Evening This event held annually recognises and acknowledges the achievements, contribution and commitment that our people make to their clubs, communities and LSV. These achievements reflect LSV’s position as a vital rescue, emergency and community service organisation and how their actions position the movement as a valued and beloved organisation across the state of Victoria. Valuing Volunteers Evening This event is generally held during the annual National Volunteers Week. This function is held to recognise the efforts of our club members who have provided volunteer service to their club, area or state. Awards not presented on either Presentation Evening will be awarded at other appropriate forums.


Life Membership Life Saving Victoria (LSV) Life Membership recognises those individual members whose volunteering has rendered a distinguished, sustained and conspicuous service to LSV over a period of at least fifteen (15) years. The Honours and Awards Committee annually forwards to the LSV Board of Directors recommendations for Life Membership.

Following a resolution by the LSV Board of Directors to accept the nominations presented for Life Membership, the successful nominee(s) will be notified and invited for presentation at the Awards of Excellence evening.

NB: Life Membership is regulated under LSV Constitution: Rule 7.3 and By Law 3.3

Essential Criteria

Must be a financial member of an affiliated lifesaving club Must be an LSV member of good standing The point of distinction to this recognition is the nature of the nominee’s contribution to LSV at state

level over a period of at least 15 years which sets the nominee apart and ahead of other members.

Interpretative Criteria

Will have maintained a sustained level of conspicuous service at a level that brings distinction to that service

Will have made an individual contribution that can be classified as unique and which can be attributed to that person as opposed to being a member of a wider group of members

Will have given distinguished service to LSV over a period spanning as least 15 year. The unique and distinguished nature of the service can be at different levels of LSV provided that the

nomination evidences exemplary and distinguished service that can be seen as a unique contribution to the advancement of lifesaving in Victoria

NOTE: Club service MAY be considered within the nomination, should the nature of such service be of innovation and leading best practice and was provided to assist in the development of objectives of LSV.

Nominations can be submitted by a Club Committee, Club Member, Council Executive members or by an individual member of LSV using the online nomination form

Nominations received after the closing date will not be considered Nominations lodged with the Honours and Awards Committee will be verified for accuracy of the

Selection Criteria Regarding the Nominee

Service What distinguishes this service beyond that of others?

Contribution What makes this person’s contribution(s) unique amongst LSV membership? What contribution(s) are directly attributable to this person (apart from others)? How has this contribution(s) advanced LSV’s mission across Victoria?

Length of Service Has this distinguished service spanned at least 15 years?


Process

The Honours and Awards Committee will consider all nominations for LSV Life Membership The Honours and Awards Committee will provide a recommendation for Life Membership to the LSV

Board. Successful recommendations will be recorded in the minutes of the relevant Board meeting Life Memberships are awarded annually and will be announced at the LSV Awards of Excellence

Evening Following the appointment to Life Membership the successful nominee will be informed and invited

to the Awards of Excellence Evening Proposers will be contacted regarding success or non‐success of their nomination There will be no feedback from the Honours and Awards Committee on any nomination Unsuccessful nominations for LSV Life Membership may be resubmitted for consideration after two

(2) years Presentation Award winner will be announced at the LSV Awards of Excellence Evening.


John Wishart Memorial Medal – Lifesaver of the Year The John Wishart Memorial Medal Award (Lifesaver of the Year) recognises the LSV member who has made an outstanding contribution to the delivery of frontline lifesaving services as a patrolling lifesaver and who can be presented as an identifiable ambassador for Life Saving Victoria.

This award perpetuates the memory and the deeds of John Wishart of the Sorrento‐Portsea Surf Life Saving Club who was taken by a shark at Portsea Beach in March 1956.

The winner of the John Wishart Memorial Medal Award will be the Victorian representative to the SLSA National Recognition Awards – SLSA Lifesaver of the Year. The award qualification period is from: 1 May – 30 April annually. Essential Criteria

Must be a financial member of an affiliated lifesaving club Must be an LSV member of good standing Must hold a current SLSA Bronze Medallion



The relevant Club President will be notified of received nomination/s Nominations must include: ‐ copies of patrol hours achieved during the qualifying period and the previous season

‐ copies of SLSA patrol qualifications and awards ‐ a digital photo of the nominee

Honours and Awards Committee may seek clarification from across LSV to verify all or some of statements/claims contained in the nomination

Selection Criteria

Consider and address the follow criteria

1. One key achievement relating to active patrolling 2. Involvement and achievements relating to the Club’s patrol duties and responsibilities 3. Roles (relating to patrolling) held at the Club and achievements in these positions 4. Personal development achieved e.g. training, workshops, conferences attended, and skills developed

in relation to patrol duties 5. Rescue related activities or experiences inside and outside patrol hours 6. Future ambitions relating to lifesaving at the club, area and state levels 7. Involvement ‐ relating to lifesaving in community programs e.g. school, CALD/education 8. One or more current or perceived challenges to active patrol duties


Process

All nominations received will be considered by the Honours and Awards Committee and a short list of nominees will be compiled for interview.

Short listed nominees will be notified by email of the date and time of their interview Interviews

Nominees are required to attend an interview with members of the Honours & Awards Committee Nominees will then be asked questions on the answers contained in the nomination The estimated length of interview would be 25 minutes

Presentation Award winner will be announced at the LSV Awards of Excellence Evening.


Youth Lifesaver of the Year The Youth Lifesaver of the Year Award recognises and rewards a young member aged between 15 – 21 years, who has made an outstanding contribution to the delivery of patrolling lifesaving frontline services.

It is aimed at active a youth lifesaver undertaking lifesaving duties and who can be identified as an ambassador for Life Saving Victoria.

NOTE: Age is taken as of midnight on 30 September.

The winner of the Youth Lifesaver of the Year Award will be nominated as the Victorian representative in the SLSA National Recognition Awards – Youth Lifesaver of the Year. The award qualification period is from: 1 May – 30 April annually. Essential Criteria

Must be a financial member of an affiliated lifesaving club

Must be an LSV member of good standing Must hold a current Bronze Medallion



Nominations submitted by an individual MUST attach a letter of endorsement from the club President or member of the Club Committee

The relevant Club President will be notified of received nominations Nominations must include:

‐ copy of SLSA qualifications and awards gained ‐ copy of patrol hours completed during the qualifying period ‐ a digital photo of the nominee ‐ letter of club endorsement

Honours and Awards Committee may seek clarification across LSV regarding the nomination Selection Criteria

Describe the nominee’s

All nominations received will be considered by the Membership & Leadership Development Council in conjunction with the Honours and Awards Committee and a short list of nominees will be compiled for interview.

Short listed nominees will be notified by email of the date and time of their interview

Interviews

Nominees are required to attend an interview with members of the Membership & Leadership Executive

Nominees will be asked questions on the answers contained in the nomination The estimated length of the interview would be 25 minutes

Graeme Long Memorial Medal ‐ Volunteer of the Year The Graeme Long Memorial Medal Award (Volunteer of the Year) recognises an individual's volunteer contribution which has significantly benefited their club or has enhanced the development of LSV's mission and values throughout the past year.

This award perpetuates the memory and volunteer contributions of Graeme Long of the Bancoora Surf Life Saving Club. Graeme was lost at sea whilst paddling back to Torquay after conducting an examination at Anglesea in 1998.

The winner of the Graeme Long Memorial Medal Award will be the Victorian representative to the SLSA National Recognition Awards – SLSA Volunteer of the Year.

The award qualification period is from: 1 May – 30 April annually. Essential Criteria


Must be an LSV member of good standing This award focusses on volunteer contributions to areas of lifesaving within the club, at state, national or international levels. Note: Applications which focus singularly on achievements in one area will not be considered if this area is also covered by other Member Recognition Awards (e.g. Lifesaver, Coach, Trainer and Assessor).



The relevant Club President will be notified of received nomination/s Nominations must include:

‐ copies of SLSA qualifications and awards ‐ a digital photo of the nominee

Honours and Awards Committee may seek clarification from across LSV to verify all or some of statements/claims contained in the nomination

Selection Criteria Consider the following criteria

1. Commitment to activities across the club 2. Achievements and positions held at Club, State and/or National levels (current season) 3. Challenges identified and overcome by the nominee which have made a significant or positive impact

or resulted in a positive cultural change to the club or at state level 4. Projects identified or improvements implemented by the nominees at the club or at state level over

the past three (3) years 5. Future ambitions in the areas of club, State, national and in the community 6. A single change which could be implemented to improve the volunteer experiences in the movement


Process

All nominations received will be considered by the Honours and Awards Committee (HAC) and a short list of nominees will be compiled for interview.

Club of the Year The Club of the Year Award aims to encourage and recognise outstanding achievements in club development which results in LSV clubs providing safer beach and aquatic environments for the community. LSV acknowledges that clubs produce many outstanding achievements through their members during each season, and that many of these initiatives are inspirational and supportive of our core business. The winner of the Club of the Year will be the Victorian representative to the SLSA National Recognition Awards – SLSA Club of the Year. The award qualification period is from: 1 May – 30 April annually. Essential Criteria

Must be a Life Saving Victoria affiliated lifesaving club Must have provided required patrolling services during the qualifying period Must be of good standing with Life Saving Victoria Australian Business Number


Nominations can only be submitted using the online nomination form All nominations must be endorsed by the Club President, which will be verified by LSV Honours and Awards Committee may seek clarification from across LSV to verify all or some of the

statements/claims contained in the nomination

Selection Criteria

Consider the following criteria – and address:

1. New initiatives, programs or events implement last season 2. Enhancement to and further development of the club’s strategic objectives 3. Development of members’ engagement with club programs 4. Implementation of improvement measures across areas of governance and leadership, 5. Delivery of lifesaving services 6. Development of members’ skills base 7. Club involvement within LSV programs/activities eg: Sport, Nippers, Training & Assessment 8. Community engagement or community support initiatives

Process

All nominations will be considered by the Honours and Awards Committee and a short list of nominees will be considered for interview

Short listed nominees will be notified by email of the date and time of the interview Interviews

Club representatives are to attend an interview with members of the Honours & Awards Committee Each club presenting can have up to three representatives attend the interview Representatives will be asked questions on the answers contained in the nomination The estimated length of the interview would be 25 minutes

Note: There are to be no audio‐visual aids used during the interview. Presentation Award winner will be announced at the LSV Awards of Excellence Evening.


Outstanding Achievement of the Year The Outstanding Achievement of the Year Award recognises a contribution, a program, or activity that has impacted on club activities or lifesaving across the state.

The award qualification period is from: 1 May – 30 April annually. Note: Nominees should ensure that their selection of this Award does not replicate another Award category which may be more suitable for recognition. Essential Criteria

Must be a financial member/s of an affiliated lifesaving club Must be LSV member/s of good standing




‐ a digital representational photo of the achievement or nominee Honours and Awards Committee may seek clarification from across LSV to verify all or some of the

statements/claims contained in the nomination

Selection Criteria Regarding the Achievement, the nomination must address the unique impact of the achievement.

1. Name of the Achievement 2. How was the Achievement identified? 3. Reason why the Achievement was progressed 4. Planning required 5. Resources required and/or developed 6. Impact of the Achievement 7. Outcomes of the Achievement 8. Ongoing benefits resulting from the Achievement

Beach Lifeguard of the Year The Beach Lifeguard of the Year Award recognises the Australian Lifeguard Service employee who has made an outstanding contribution to the delivery and development of a professional lifeguard services across Victoria. The winner of the Beach Lifeguard of the Year Award will be nominated as the Victorian representative in the SLSA National Recognition Awards – DHL Lifeguard of the Year. The award qualification period is from: 1 May – 30 April annually. Essential Criteria:

Employment as a Lifeguard by the Australian Lifeguard Service Must be an LSV member in good standing


Nominations can only be submitted by an area Chief Lifeguard or member of the Australian Lifeguard Service electronically using the online nomination form

Nominations must include: ‐ letter of endorsement from the area Chief Lifeguard ‐ copy of contract term and lifeguard hours (rostered and achieved) ‐ copy of patrolling hours (rostered and achieved) for the current and previous season ‐ copy of SLSA qualifications and awards ‐ a digital photo of the nominee

The selection of a nominee is based on the following:

Employment standing (position held and total years of service) Valuable contribution

Commitment to public safety Achievement Work ethic

Selection Criteria Consider and address:

1. One key lifeguarding achievement during the qualifying period 2. Roles held within the Australian Lifeguard Service 3. Personal development achievements with in the Australian Lifeguard Service 4. Contribution to the lifeguard service (e.g. assisted with training programs, mentoring other lifeguards

and trainees, gained additional awards, assisted with public relation event etc) 5. Commitment to public safety (e.g. community announcements, education programs, proactive

patrolling, media and public relations, appropriate set‐up on beach area etc) 6. Involvement in (e.g. rescues, major incidents, large number of preventative actions, commendations,

community recognition, etc Process

All nominations received will be considered by the Honours and Awards Committee (HAC) and a short list of nominees will be compiled for interview

Short listed nominees will be notified by email of the date and time of their interview Interview

Coach of the Year The Coach of the Year will recognise the volunteer coach who has made a significant contribution to the development of athletes and teams within lifesaving sport. The winner of of this category will be nominated as the Victorian representative to the SLSA National Recognition Awards – Coach of the Year. The award qualification period is from: 1 May – 30 April annually. Essential Criteria


Must be an LSV member of good standing Must hold a current Surf Sports coaching accreditation during the qualifying period

Can be a coach of any discipline within the aquatic sports competition


NOTE: Selection of Coach of the Year will be conducted in a two (2)‐stage nomination process. Nominees are invited to submit an initial electronic nomination addressing the 1st stage award criteria listed below. All 1st stage nominations will be considered by an Aquatic Sports Executive subcommittee and short listed. Short‐listed nominee will be contacted by email and invited to submit further nomination support information.


The relevant Club President will be notified of received nominations Initial nominations must include:

‐ copies of current Surf Sports coaching accreditation ‐ a digital photo of the nominee

The Aquatic Sports Executive may seek clarification from across LSV to verify all or some of the statements/claims contained in all nominations

Initial 1st Stage Selection Criteria Coaching within Aquatic Sports

1. Rank and list the nominee’s three main coaching achievements during the qualifying period 2. List the nominee’s coaching roles held at club, state, national or international levels

Coaching Education 1. List coaching clinics/conferences or courses which the nominee has attended/facilitated or presented

at club, state, national or international levels Athletes Performance

1. List specific achievements of athlete/s and or teams coached. For example: medal places at major events or series, state, national and international competitions.


2nd Stage Nomination Information Nominees short listed by the Aquatic Sports Executive subcommittee will be contacted by email and invited to supply further information on:

1. Significant innovations or achievements in the role of a Coach made by the nominee during the current season

2. Further information on the nominee’s coaching and lifesaving contributions 3. List dates, locations, number of participants and type/level of involvement in Aquatic Sports

accreditation and coaching courses Coaching Education

1. Further information relating to the nominee’s contributions to their own development and the development of other coaches within aquatic sports

Athletes Performance 1. Provide athlete/s names, age category, major carnivals attended and placings 2. Further information on athlete/s development from the nominee’s coaching that may not be

reflected in places and medals (500 words) 3. Methods by which the nominee encourages the development of athletes outside of aquatic sports

(500 words) Process The Aquatic Sports Executive subcommittee will consider all received 2nd stage further nomination information and recommend the Coach of the Year to the Aquatic Sports Executive for endorsement. Presentation Award winner will be announced at the LSV Awards of Excellence Evening.


Athlete of the Year (Open and Youth) The Athlete of the Year Award (Open and Youth) will recognise the individual athlete who has demonstrated outstanding achievements and excellence in their chosen lifesaving sport discipline at state, national and/or international levels. The winners of these awards will be nominated as the LSV representatives to the SLSA National Recognition Awards: Athlete of the Year (Open) and Athlete of the Year (Youth). NOTE: Open age athletes are categorised as those eligible to compete in Open Events as per the Surf Sports Manual. Youth Athletes are categorised as those eligible to compete in U15 – U19 events as per the Surf Sports Manual. The award qualification period is from: 1 May – 30 April annually. Essential Criteria

Must be a financial member of an affiliated lifesaving club Must be an LSV member of good standing Must have met the minimum required Patrol Hours during the qualifying period


NOTE: Nominations for both Athlete of the Year (Open) and Athlete of the Year (Youth) will be conducted in a two (2) stage nomination process. Nominees in both Open and Youth categories are to submit an initial electronic nomination addressing the 1st stage award criteria listed below. All 1st stage nominations will be considered by an Aquatic Sports Executive subcommittee and short listed. Short‐listed nominees will be contacted by email and invited to submit further nomination support information.

1. Rank and list the nominee’s three key lifesaving sport achievements during the qualifying period 2. Rank and list placings/results (including team events) at major competitions ‐ state, national and/or

international levels. Include event name/s Representative teams

1. List representative team/s of which the nominee has been a member Include event name/s and placings


2nd Stage Nomination Information Nominees who are short listed by the Aquatic Sports Executive subcommittee will be contacted by email and invited to supply further nomination support information on:

1. Contribution/s the nominee has made to the performance of the representative team (500 words) 2. Areas within the club or at state level where the nominee has contributed to the sport of lifesaving

(500 words) Process The Aquatic Sports Executive subcommittee will consider all received 2nd Stage further nomination information and recommend the winners to the Aquatic Sports Executive for endorsement. Presentation Award winners will be announced at the LSV Awards of Excellence Evening


U14 + U15 Athlete of the Year The U14+U15 Athlete of the Year Award will recognise the individual athlete who has demonstrated excellence in the sport of lifesaving. NOTE: Nominees in this category, who are also eligible in the SLSA Open Youth Athlete (U15 ‐ U19) as per the Surf Sports Manual, can apply for both the Victorian Athlete (14+U15) and the Victorian Athlete (U17 – U23) categories. The award qualification period is from: 1 May – 30 April annually. Essential Criteria

Must be a financial member of an affiliated lifesaving club Must be an LSV member of good standing Must have met the minimum required Patrol Hours during the qualifying period


NOTE: Nominations for U14 +U15 Athlete of the Year Award will be conducted in a two‐(2) stage nomination process. Nominees are invited to submit an initial electronic nomination addressing the 1st Stage award criteria listed below. All 1st Stage nominations will be considered by an Aquatic Sports Executive subcommittee. Process The Aquatic Sports Executive subcommittee will consider all received 2nd Stage further nomination information and recommend the winners to the Aquatic Sports Executive for endorsement. Presentation Award winner will be announced at a function to be advised. Note: For season 2019/20 the Nipper of the Year awarded at Junior State Titles will remain as U14 and the athlete who wins this award can also nominate for the Youth Victorian Athlete of the Year U14+U15 award. Commencing in the 2020/21 season, the Nipper of the Year award will be awarded to U13 Athletes.


Masters Athlete of the Year The Masters Athlete of the Year Award will recognise the individual athlete who has demonstrated excellence within lifesaving sport. NOTE: Nominees in this category, who have also competed in senior carnivals as per the Surf Sports Manual can also nominate for the Athlete of the Year (Open). Team of the Year The Team of the Year Awards will recognise outstanding team performance/s in three (3) age categories across lifesaving sport. The Team of the Year award categories are:

‐ Youth U14 + U15 ‐ U17 to U23 inclusive ‐ Open – will include Masters

NOTE: Teams can only nominate to the age category in which they compete. NOTE: A team is defined as per the Surf Sports Manual (Section 2.10.12 Team Events). (Representative Teams will not be considered)


Must be financial members of a club affiliated with Life Saving Victoria Must be LSV members of good standing The team must consist of members from the same club Must compete as a registered team in team competition/s Must have presented a positive image as a team within lifesaving sports All team members must have met the minimum required patrol hours during the qualifying period

The winner of this category will be nominated as the LSV representative to the SLSA National Recognition Awards – Official of the Year. Volunteer Trainer of the Year The Volunteer Trainer of the Year Award recognises the Trainer who has made a significant contribution towards the training and education of LSV volunteers across Victoria.

Volunteer Assessor of the Year The Volunteer Assessor of the Year Award recognises the assessor who has made a significant contribution towards the assessment of lifesaving awards across Victoria.

The winner of this category will be nominated as the Victorian representative to the SLSA National Recognition Awards ‐ Assessor of the Year. The award qualification period is from: 1 May – 30 April annually. Essential Criteria

Nipper Program Volunteer of the Year The Nipper Program Volunteer of the Year Award recognises the LSV member who has made an outstanding contribution to the delivery of the club’s Nipper Program.

President’s Certificate

Life Saving Victoria’s mission is to prevent aquatic related death and injury. Our vision is that all communities will learn water safety, swimming and resuscitation, and be provided with safe beaches, water environments and aquatic venues.

The President’s Certificate will recognise and celebrate outstanding and significant service, action or contribution to LSV, lifesaving and the community that support, enhance or promote LSV’s mission and vision.

One or more Certificates may be awarded annually

Must be LSV member/s of good standing May be a member of the public May be a team or an organisation


Nominations can be submitted during the calendar year by a Club Committee, Club Member, Council Executive members or by an individual member of LSV using the online nomination form

International Life Saving Citation of Merit This award recognises a contribution, program, activity or accomplishment by individual, club, or team across all areas of lifesaving.

Innovation Award

This award is given to person or group in recognition of any development of equipment, procedures, or other innovation that in the opinion of the selection panel will improve any facet of lifesaving across Victoria.

The winner of the Innovation Award will be the Victorian representative to the SLSA National Recognition Awards. The award qualification period is from: 1 May – 30 April annually. Essential Criteria

The nominee must be a financial member of an affiliated lifesaving club Must be an LSV member/s of good standing Must be developed and delivered in conjunction with an external body/sponsor) The innovation should be befitting of the image and ethos of Life Saving Victoria The applicant, or the club the nomination is on behalf of, must own the innovation and its

components (eg you cannot claim to own an innovation that has been developed by another person or club).

Community Education Award This award recognises and rewards an activity and/or program which have significantly worked towards saving lives, creating great Australians and building better communities. The winner of the Community Education Award will be the Victorian representative to the SLSA National Recognition Awards.

Rescue of the Month The Rescue of the Month (ROTM) Award aims to recognise exceptional rescues performed and first aid treatments administered which are deemed to be over and above normal patrol duties and showcase excellence in lifesaving training, skills and procedures.

Rescue of the Month/incident submissions are considered on a monthly basis. All nominated rescues/incidents must have been performed inside the designated time: i.e. a rescue/incident that occurs in November is only eligible for the November award. All rescue/incident submissions will be considered by the Life Saving Operations Executive. Only one (1) nomination per month will be communicated to the Honours and Award Committee for information and then forwarded to Surf Life Saving Australia. The award qualification period is from: 1 December – 30 November annually and the monthly submission scheduled is listed below. SLSA Meritorious Awards Meritorious Awards are awarded to affiliated clubs and/or their members and/or the public for outstanding deeds of bravery performed during lifesaving operations of Surf Life Saving Australia (SLSA) (during and outside of designated patrol hours).

Victorian nominations for SLSA Meritorious Awards must be endorsed by the Chair of the LSV Honours and Awards Committee or their delegate

Categories Meritorious Awards are established in two sections, Individual and Group or Club. Each category is divided into three grades, as follows: Meritorious Awards ‐ Individual

a. Silver Medallion

Very high level of risk to rescuer combined with optimal application of skills and supporting systems. Outcome for patient/s without rescue attempt = Definite fatality.

b. Bronze Medallion

High level of risk to rescuer combined with very good application of skills and supporting systems.

Outcome for patient/s without rescue attempt = High chance of a fatality

c. Certificate of Merit

Moderate level of risk to rescuer combined with good application of skills and supporting systems.

Outcome for patient/s without rescue attempt = Serious injury/possibility of a fatality.

Meritorious Awards – Group or Club

a. Certificate of Merit with Silver Medallion inset

b. Certificate of Merit with Bronze Medallion inset

c. Certificate of Merit

The Group or Club Award is issued for rescues of exceptional merit, in which a group of members are involved and where no individuals can be singled out for an award.

Valuing Volunteers Evening Awards The Valuing Volunteers Evening facilitates the recognition of service given by the members of clubs affiliated with Life Saving Victoria.

Recognition Awards

Club Service 100+ Hours of Volunteer Service (Patrol and Water Safety) State Service

The award qualification period is from 1 July to end of the patrol season annually.

Essential Criteria Must be a financial member of an affiliated lifesaving Must be an LSV member of good standing

Club Service Award This award is to acknowledge the volunteer contributions of a member whose service to the club is deemed to be sustained and distinguished during the qualifying period.


Nominations can be submitted for club service in any category e.g:

Patrolling Coaching Officials Training Assessment

Nippers Media/Publicity Competition General Service Committee/Board

Nominations can be submitted by Club Committee, an individual member of the club or a member of LSV All nominations must be endorsed by the Club Committee Nominations can only be submitted electronically using the online nomination form LSV Staff members may seek clarification from across LSV to verify all or some of the statement/s claims contained in

the nomination.

Presentation Club Service Recognition Certificates will be provided to Club Committees or presentation at a nominated club function. A request for an LSV representative to present these certificates can be lodged with Lifesaving Operations.


100 + Hours of Volunteer Service (Patrol and Water Safety)

This award will recognise the patrol service of club members who have contributed 100+ hours of volunteer patrol or water safety service from 1 July to end of the patrol season annually

Award Conditions

Service Hours will be recognised in the following categories

Gold Certificate Awarded to the top 20% across the state who have achieved 100+ patrol or water safety hours

Silver Certificate Awarded to the next 30% across the state who have achieved 100+ patrol or water safety hours

Bronze Certificate Awarded to the next 50% across the state who have achieved 100+ patrol or water safety hours

LSV staff members will obtain the required information on achieved patrol or water safety hours as per listings on Surfguard at the end of the current patrol season.

State Service

This award will recognise those volunteers who have rendered service to LSV in the State Service Recognition categories listed below for periods of 5/10/15+ years

State Officers Members who have held position/s as a State Officer on LSV Councils (Life Saving Operations, Aquatic Sports, Membership & Leadership Development, Council of Lifesaving Clubs, Community Education and Industry Engagement).

State Committee Members Members who have held position/s on a State Committee under the auspice of the LSV Board or LSV Council (as listed above).

Council Appointed Panel Members or Volunteers Panel Members and or Volunteers who have been appointed to State positions/s e.g. State Coach/Manager/Program Leaders/Officials under the auspice of LSV Council/s

Presentation Awards will be presented at the Annual Valuing Volunteers Evening.
