wenty years ago current club vice president Mike Brawn attended an LCB meeting and spoke in support of a Lancashire wide pyramid structure for league cricket. There is still some way to go on this but 2016 saw Bury

Cricket Club take our place in the Greater Manchester Cricket League, the biggest shake up of league cricket in the region in all our life times, and I am including Dave and Graham in that statement.

sts, The 1st XI, under the leadership of Karl Belston, took their place in the Premier League. The season was not without challenges; the departures of Simon to Australia, and last year’s captain, and other senior players.

Our 1st XI, in recent years, have got used to challenging for titles and cups and playing in a struggling side was a new experience for a lot of players. It was undoubtedly a demanding season and the 1st XI were only outside the bottom 4 twice all season; before a ball was bowled and after the last ball of the season. Despite the struggles there were undoubted highs. Only a few years ago we would have scoffed at beating the likes of Greenmount, Heywood and Unsworth but we defeated all three on our own turf. At home we had the best record in the league, beating the Egerton the GMCL champions and Denton West the Lancashire KO champions. We also inflicted the only defeat on Clitheroe all season, in a run that saw us reach the last quarter finals of the LCB cup; a first for the club.

There were also disappointments; we failed to win a game away from home all season, went out of the Derek Kay Cup in the first round and on occasions one or two players let themselves and the club down with their behaviour which undoubtedly upset team spirit. It was no surprise therefore that when these players had moved on that performances improved dramatically and the great escape was engineered.

Of the 12 players who at various times were on the field at Ramsbottom when we beat Edgworth to stay up 7 were home grown and an eighth has played here for longer than I can remember and he probably cares to let on. It is fair to say that lessons have been learnt. Credit must go to Karl for leading the side so well in what were never easy circumstances. He was ably assisted by Neil. On the batting front new recruit Mohammed Jamal led the way with 432 runs which does not include a magnificent hundred against Clitheroe. Bowling wise Alex Breckin led the way with 28 wickets.

nds, The 2nd XI started the season in Division 4 West with what looked to be a reasonable chance of promotion. They were once again led by Chris Potts who once again had the unenviable task of juggling player availability.

Nearly 30 players turned out for the 2nd XI during the course of the season. Going into the last game of the season needing to win at Walshaw to go up, the batting frailties, that were evident for much of the season, reared their head one final time with fatal consequences for the promotion bid. Narrow defeats away to champions Whalley Range, and runners up Elton Vale proved decisive, whilst the toss at home to Whalley Range probably decided that encounter. The 2nd XI exited the cup at the first round stage. Leading the way on the batting front was Dominic Morris with 539 runs, but crucially no other batsman managed 200 runs. The bowling attack was once again led by Majid Mohammed (38 wickets) and Arshad Raza (36 wickets) with captain Potts and Sam Massey both passing 20 wickets. A number of juniors had their first taste of 2nd XI cricket this season and this augurs well for next year.

rds, The 3rd XI were back playing wholly on a Sunday in regional divisions. They finished a more than creditable 3rd behind Greenmount and Edgworth. The team was initially led by Paul Belston, with Joe Mitchell taking over

midway through the season before various stand in captains filled in when Joe

returned to university. My thanks go to everyone who helped produce a successful season. On top of the success in the league there was a cup run that ended in a narrow defeat at home to Elton in the semi-finals. Upwards of 40 players were used during the course of the season, the vast majority of them under 18. This can only bode well for the future. On the batting front Fraser Parr, Usama Akram and Gary Foreman all scored over 200 runs whilst Chris Potts, Usman Afridi and Lleyton Belston all took more than 15 wickets. Next season the 3rd XI will be playing in a tiered structure rather than regionalised and we will be competing in the 2nd tier.

ractice, Having watched senior practice this year I think we can all agree that it was somewhat chaotic. There was little structure and I am not sure that rolling the net cage out onto the square time and time again is the best

use of our time. It was disappointing to note the lack of players from outside the first team who regularly attended practice. Equally, when non-first team players did attend in any numbers there appeared to be a clear divide. Once again we have listened to feedback from those who attended practice and have decided to appoint a club coach to run sessions on a Thursday evening. After interviewing several candidates, we have appointed Sam Holt. Sam is a Level 3 coach who has worked with Lancashire age group sides and comes highly recommended. He will be in attendance at nets tomorrow night. We thank Steve Dublin for his recent work for us and I hope we still see him around the club.

This divide that I saw at practice also manifested itself at other times in the season. I appeal to all members to remember that we are one club working for the same goal. Inevitably, when all other things are equal, we prioritise the 1st XI over the 2nd XI and the 2nd XI over the 3rd XI. As an example this year we provided the 2nd XI with a new ball for each match. We continued to hold match fees at £5 which, given that every Saturday we are paying out approximately £200 to play two games of cricket, is a significant subsidy. It is also not tenable in the long term. It is, therefore, important that players help contribute to the cost of playing. It can either take the form of increased match fees, or preferably by players going out

and finding match ball sponsors. Also, when we do hold social and fundraising events your support is anticipated. Not all of these events are designed to make money; the December trip to watch Alastair Murray play for Preston Grasshoppers and the table tennis club are as much about team building exercises as anything else and I would urge you to support them where you can and suggest other events.

uniors. The junior teams had pleasing first seasons in the GMCL. It was heartening to see four U9s teams playing cricket on a Monday night and this was a great success. At the other end of the age spectrum our U19s went down

to a narrow defeat in the Nat West T20 Blast at Ormskirk at the quarter final stage. Thanks go as always to our junior managers and coaches, in particular the indefatigable Paul Belston. In 2016 we employed Mick Fletcher to provide junior coaching and he proved to be a great success. In was a source of some regret that we were unable to engage him for the 2017 season. We worked with Cricket Asylum who provided in-school coaching at a number of local primary schools. In truth the success of this was difficult to measure and we felt a little limited. Nevertheless, the challenges that cricket faces in promoting itself to young people in an increasingly crowded market place means, that after reviewing the programme with Cricket Asylum, we will look to re-engage them for the 2017 season. Sam Holt will also oversee our junior section. We will also hold practice sessions for our youngest juniors on a Friday night for the first time. A number of local clubs already practice on a Friday night with great success and it is hoped junior parents will take the opportunity to socialise whilst practice is ongoing. Additionally, with the encroachment of football into summer it was felt that this would throw up the fewest clashes.

corers, To our scorers James, Freddie and Josh a big thank you for embracing CricHq, everyone would agree what a fantastic asset it is and they are.

round, Late in 2015 the club were awarded a substantial grant to fund drainage work to the outfield. This proved to be as much a curse as a blessing as it was discovered that we would be unable to recover the VAT,

landing the club with a substantial bill should the work have gone ahead. Thanks to generous donations from members and friends, together with the hard work of Martin Kay the club has been able to undertake the work. Additional funding, in the form of a grant and a loan, has been secured from the ECB. Drains have been run the length of the ground and a large section of the outfield has been scalped, levelled and re-sown. There is still some work to place in the form of sand banding and shock waving but I am confident that the ground will be ready for the start of the season. I would like to thank Dave Leach for all his hard work on the ground up to the start of this season. Dave has handed over responsibility for ground preparation to Simon Carr who has done an excellent job in maintaining our standard. It would also be remiss of me not to thank Wayne for all his work around the ground as well.

uture, The first GMCL season might not have brought trophies to the club but it was successful. Unfortunately, across the “recreational” game, there are many clubs who are prepared to spend astronomical sums of money

on players. Bury CC feel that to follow this pattern would be foolhardy. Our playing and coaching budget is as large as it has ever been but to expand it further would be to put the future of the club at risk. Equally, it goes against what we have tried to build. To ship in and then ship out several different players each season is not good practice and we believe that a level of stability is good for the club. If players want to join us, and we always welcome new players, then they must want to join us for the right reasons i.e. we are an ambitious, friendly and well run club. We want to build a sustainable and successful club and we will only do so by focusing on attracting young people to the club, offering them quality coaching and promoting them at the appropriate time. Whilst other clubs may be happy to throw money at a player to fill a gap, that cannot be the Bury way.

We must continue to move forward off the field, improving our coaching strategy and our facilities as this will aid the development of our existing players, both young and old and will help attract new ones. To this end I would welcome any ideas as to improvements that can be made to the club. Equally, I would be delighted if people wished to step forward to join the committee to help drive the club forward.

hanks, I would like to thank fellow committee members for all their hard work; Paul for his work with the juniors, regardless of title the man keeps producing quality juniors for us; Alan for keeping a close eye on the state

of our finances and ensuring our administration runs smoothly; Wayne for not spending too much money and his work, much of which goes unseen, without which we would struggle to function successfully, Matt for all great amount of work in the background and lastly and by no means least to Sue and Jackie for manning the counter and providing teas. They help make the club a friendly and welcoming place. A couple of final announcements concern fundraisers, the golf day will take once again take place at Pike Fold on 12 May. Your support for this crucial and popular fundraiser is welcome. We will be hosting a Mike Brawn sponsored walk on the 29

May, car boot sales will be taking place once more, the annual dinner

will take place on Friday 6 October. We would like feedback on the format of this event.

In addition, Wayne has managed to resurrect the annual tour to Wales in a slightly different format this year. On Tuesday 25 July we will play Bangor, Wednesday daytime is for golf and an evening 20/20 against Llandudno, whilst we play Colwyn Bay on the Thursday.

Code of Conduct and The Spirit of Cricket

Cricket is a game that owes much of its unique appeal to the fact that it should be played not only within its Laws, but also within the Spirit of the Game. Any action which is seen to abuse this spirit causes injury to the game itself. The major responsibility for ensuring the spirit of fair play rests with the captain.

1. There are two Laws which place the responsibility for the team's conduct firmly on the captain. Responsibility of Captains The captains are responsible at all times for ensuring that play is conducted within the Spirit of the Game as well as within the Laws. Responsibility of Players In the event that any player failing to comply with instructions by an umpire, or criticising by word or action the decisions of an umpire, or showing dissent, or generally behaving in a manner which might bring the game into distribute, the umpire concerned shall in the first place report the matter to the other umpire and to the player's captain, and instruct the latter to take action. 2. Fair and Unfair Play According to the Laws the umpires are the sole judges of fair and unfair play. The umpires may intervene at any time and it is the responsibility of the captain to take action where required. 3. The Umpires are authorised to intervene in cases of: • Time wasting • Damaging the pitch

Page 10: Members of the Greater Manchester Cricket League Fixtures ... · Bury Cricket Club 2017 Members of the Greater Manchester Cricket League Fixtures and Information . CLUB EVENTS BURY

• Dangerous or unfair bowling • Tampering with the ball • Any other action that they consider to be unfair 4. The Spirit of the Game involves RESPECT for: • Your opponents • Your own captain and team • The role of the umpires • The game's traditional values 5. It is against the Spirit of the Game: • To dispute an umpire's decision by word, action or gesture • To direct abusive language towards an opponent or umpire • To indulge in cheating or any sharp practice, for instance (a) To appeal knowing that a batsman is not out (b) To advance towards an umpire in an aggressive manner when appealing (c) To seek to distract an opponent either verbally or by harassment with persistent clapping or unnecessary noise under the guise of enthusiasm and motivation of one's own side 6. Violence There is no place for any act of violence on the field of play. 7. Players Captains and umpires together set the tone for the conduct of a cricket match. Every player is expected to make an important contribution to this.

matches

40 fixtures to choose from, please contact Wayne on 07856 355424 for more information.
