IEEE Membership

Overall membership remains behind last year by –1.4%, and the last three months it has been in this same general range. Since we ended the 2017 membership year with a lower number of members overall (due to declining retention as well as recruitment), the strong gains we are seeing simply have not yet offset the deficit we started with.

In looking at the chart on page 1, we see that the current retention rate and raw count of renewals is exceeding last year by almost 3,000. However we will not see the impact of retention gains until the service deactivation in February. Currently all members active for 2017 are in still in the active member counts. Once unrenewed members are removed from active membership counts in February, we will have a clearer picture of retention’s impact on overall membership growth. All channels of membership development retention, recruitment and reinstatement—are very healthy at the three months into the membership year.

Recruitment

Overall recruitment gains remain positive, ahead +1.9%. Although this leveled off from October’s +3.4% gain. This was due to undergraduate recruitment which had a very strong, early start this year however those gains were simply realized earlier and are now leveling off. (The annual IEEEXtreme Programming Competition occurred in October and as participation has grown each year, so did the gain in recruitment that we saw then as a result.) Both higher grade and graduate student recruitment are ahead of last year by significant rates.

See more detail on recruitment, page 6.

Retention

Renewal activity is off to a very strong start. Higher-grade retention saw a big bump in October due to an increase in the number of members enrolled in the automatic renewal process (which took place the second week in October), and is well ahead of same time last year. There was an increase of 4,500 members that were auto-renewed this year versus last year. (Students are not eligible for automatic renewal.) If higher retention remains ahead, this will be a big factor in achieving overall membership growth this year—because higher grade members account for about 75% of total membership, in addition to having significantly higher retention rates compared to students.

Another bump in November was due to the early renewal drawing deadline on 15 November, as we typically see a big spike in renewal activity once again leading up to it. Then, in late November, the second paper renewal notice was mailed to all unrenewed HG members, so we should see another bump in December.

See more detail on renewal, page 5.

Communicate the value of membership. Take time to remind your members about the value they get from being a member in your Section. There are many ideas that are easy to implement. Need help or ideas? Contact [email protected], or visit the MD portal, www.ieee.org/md.

Society Membership

Overall Society memberships ended the membership year also down –1.4%, and like IEEE Membership has stalled at this level the last three months. The top Societies in terms of percentage growth in the 2018 membership year thus far are: Intelligent Transportation Systems (+13.5%), Systems, Man & Cybernetics (+11.1%), and Industry Applications (+7.6%).

Society membership details are on page 9.

Membership Development goals are created for each individual Section for both recruitment and retention. In this report, we will track progress to goal on the Region-level. You will find the Section levels goals and progress in your monthly Region MD report. These reports are sent via e-mail once monthly. If you are not receiving your Region MD report, please contact your Region MD Chair.

For 2018 goals, we reviewed up to five years of history. Each Section has a unique goal based on different dynamics - whether the Section has had growth or decline, as well as the overall size and location of the Section. Note that reinstatement goals are assigned on the Region level only.

For a complete listing of Section goals, go to the MD portal, www.ieee.org/md.

Section Recognition Awards

Each Section that meets their goal receives special recognition in the form of an electronic banner to be placed on Section websites, in newsletters, and even in e-mail signatures. Banners are distributed to the Section’s Membership Development Chair, and/or Section Chair.

These Sections are also recognized in the MD Monthly report, region-level MD reports and on the MD portal, www.ieee.org/md.

Banners include the membership year and Section name in the graphic. A silver award is given in either the recruitment or retention category once met. A gold medal of recognition is given once both goals are met.

A special gift and certificate of recognition are mailed to those who earn the gold award. Certificates of recognition are also mailed to those who earned a silver award.

2018 Membership Goals—Region-Level Progress

A big chunk of renewal activity

occurred already, and why we

see the bigger progress to

goal—this is not a sign that

retention is tracking far ahead.

The goals for retention growth

are reflective of the last five

years history, and are rather

aggressive.

Eight of the 10 Regions are tracking above

goal. It will be critical to maintain the strong

recruitment momentum that we have started

the year with.

Reinstatement activity is starting strong this

year, and is currently ahead by more than

15% YoY.

The goal is to grow reinstatement by 5%,

which is the 4-year average historical growth

rate.

Find the full list of Section-level goals and progress online at www.ieee.org/md or in your monthly Region MD report.

Below is a summary by Region showing the goal and progress to goal, as of the current month. At

this point in the membership year the percent to goal benchmark (last column in charts below) should

be 25% or more.

Membership Retention Update

You can help improve higher grade retention in your Section by promoting Senior Member elevation, or by providing events and content that match your member’s needs and interests. Get to know your members –

there are pre-defined queries in SAMIEE that can help you do this.

Renewal activity is off to a very strong start. Higher-grade retention saw a big bump in October due to an increase in the number of members enrolled in the automatic renewal process (which took place the second week in October). This year, there was an increase of 4,500 members auto-renewed over last year. (Students are not eligible for auto-matic renewal.)

Another bump in November was due to the early renewal drawing deadline on 15 November, as we typically see a big spike in renewal activity once again leading up to it. Then, in late November, the second paper renewal notice was mailed to all unrenewed HG members, so we should see another bump in December.

Both graduate and undergraduate retention rates are just a tenth of a percent behind last year, while higher grade retention is ahead by +3.4%. In Regions 1-6, HG retention is ahead by over 5%. The second and thirds largest Regions 8 and 10 are also having an impact on the gains. Every Region is ahead in HG retention.

We will expect to see these gains level off throughout the membership year, as renewal activity has a finite opportuni-ty. If the renewal activity happens earlier, less will happen later. We will monitor this activity closely, but please make every effort to outreach to your unrenewed members.

Membership Recruitment Update

Overall recruitment gains remain positive, ahead +1.9%. Although this leveled off from October’s +3.4% gain. Under-graduate recruitment had a very strong, early start this year and those gains were simply realized earlier and are now leveling off. (The annual IEEEXtreme Programming Competition occurred in October and as participation has grown each year, so did the gain in recruitment that we saw then as a result.) Here is how each of the three categories im-pacted the overall result this month:

Undergraduate recruitment is down YoY –0.2% from +2.3% last month

Main drivers: Region 9 decline got bigger and Region 10 (India, specifically) recruitment gains leveled off

Typical Q4 recruitment spike occurred earlier (September) this year than last year, leveling off now

Last year at this time: undergraduate recruitment was +0.2%

Graduate student recruitment continued improvement, up +2.6% from +2.3% last month

Main influences: Regions 7, 8 and 9 increased gains

Last year at this time: graduate student recruitment was +0.4%

Higher Grade recruitment positive third month in a row, +9.9%, slight change from +10.0% last month

Main driver: Region 10 returning to pre-2016 levels so YoY shows big growth (last year was big decline) Regions 1-6 positive growth also continued, and is ahead 2.7%, up from +1.1% in October

Last year at this time: HG recruitment was –8.8%

IEEE Collabratec Recruitment Efforts

We now have a second year of data to be able to track the increases in engagement and recruitment through the Collabratec platform. In the 2017 membership year, the platform delivered 1.6% of total recruitment. Collabratec also drives very strong reinstatement activity—former members coming back—accounting for 6.5% of total reinstatement activity during the 2017 membership year.

Year-over-year: -21.8%

*Eligible referrals under the program rules.

Did you know? Sections can earn awards for top recruiting activity. To learn more, go to www.ieee.org/mgm or contact Denise Maestri, [email protected].

Important Note: MGM awards for the 2017 membership year were sent via e-mail in late September, to the member’s primary e-mail address on record. Awards must be used by 31 December!

We are pleased to recognize this month’s top program participants. The IEEE Member-Get-a-Member (MGM) program is popular with student members and therefore the program results often ebb and flow with the academic school year.

Green shading = year-over-year growth >1.0%; Yellow shading = +/- 0.99%; Red shading > (1.0%)

Overall membership is behind –1.4% YoY, was –1.5% last month

Main driver: Starting the year with fewer members, gains not yet offsetting the loss

Retention activity, though strong, does not yet impact the overall member-ship number; it will following the service deactivation in February

Last year this time was +0.7%

Higher-grade membership behind by –2.9%, was –3.1% last month

We continue to see the YoY declines shrink slowly; driven by recruitment and reinstatement

Last year overall HG was -0.1% YoY

GSM grade down –0.6% over last year, steady from last month

Main drivers: Recruitment gains staying steady

Last year this time was +0.1%

STU membership is positive +4.8%, was +5.6% last month

Main driver: Recruitment gains following IEEEXtreme diminished

Last year this time was +4.4%
