ApprentiApprenti provides a proven, reliable pipeline for underrepresented groups such as minorities, women, and veterans to gain training, certification, and placement within the talent-hungry tech industry. Unlike traditional job-training options, Apprenti combines paid on-the-job training and education for placement in a high-skill occupation. We worked with the tech industry to identify mid-tier jobs ready to be filled by highly competent people — regardless of educational background. RecruitingWTIA is ready to help you find your purple unicorn (with wings)! Give us a challenge! Let us help you achieve your goals.
Our recruitment service is aimed at finding these unicorns from outside of the state so you won’t be competing with the benefits from the company next door. Training Camp & Draft DayTraining Camp & Draft Day represents an effort to help solve the tech talent gap. Draft Day is a recruiting program that helps expand the tech talent pool, increase accessibility for new entrants to the industry, and support diversity. The program pre-selects candidates who are nominated by their instructors or supervisors, provides interview training, and gives recruiters a chance to have ‘blind’ interviews with the candidates, eliminating bias around their background and educational pedigrees.

“I didn’t know about most of these companies. If it weren’t for Draft Day, I would never have known there were so many small tech companies out there. I got to learn about what they do and I learned not to limit myself to big names. As a college grad, I want to get my foot in the door anywhere.”— Draft Day candidate, Daniel Browning, St. Martins graduate

Tech CrawlWTIA’s Tech Crawl brings together students and job seekers, as well as members of the community, to hit the pavement and explore participating hiring companies. These events encourage companies to open their doors to the public and give attendees a candid look at how their team and office operates. These events give attendees the unique opportunity to get face time with hiring managers and employees from companies that they’re interested in- before their resumes go through the HR approval process. This unique opportunity gives job seekers a way to make a powerful, off paper, first impression.

FullConTechFullConTech brings together action-oriented people from tech, government, education and nonprofit organizations for networking, learning, brainstorming, and collaborative problem-solving on issues facing all Washingtonians. Each conference focuses on a different issue area that the tech industry can positively impact. After each FullConTech, WTIA creates a Playbook that presents a list of “plays” and project ideas that emerged from discussions during the conference. Plays are projects that could be completed within 6-12 months by teams of volunteers WTIA organizes.

“FullConTech was spectacular. I loved my breakout group (full of smart, diverse, thoughtful people I would never have met otherwise). This is a wonderful thing for WTIA to be doing.”— Ed Lazowska, Bill & Melinda Gates Chair, UW CSE
“WTIA’s ability to convene the brightest minds of technology to help address the pressing issues facing the industry is unmatched.”— Suzanne Dale Etsey, President & CEO, Economic Development Council of Seattle & King County
Thought Leadership 14
IonWTIA’s Ion facilitates civic collaboration to solve community challenges. In order to do so, the program places tech employees, public servants, and nonprofits on teams. WTIA manages these small, cross-sector teams of volunteers to focus on practical projects that can demonstrate progress in less than 6 months.
The objective is for each team to prototype useful solutions that government agencies, nonprofits, or businesses will adopt. Ion also strengthens the interconnectedness of our community by building networks of unlikely partnerships and contributing to the language and practice of civic collaboration. Teams include Economic Vitality, Accessibility, and Livability that are made up of representatives from organizations such as Moz, Amazon, City of Seattle, King County Council, Goodwill, SEIU6, and Data for Good.
If you, or someone you know, want to get more involved please reach out to Julie Pham at [email protected].
Public PolicyWTIA acts as a unifying, independent voice of a very large, but diffuse sector to inform and motivate industry, education, and government peers about public policy matters and to collaborate productively to build a strong economy.
The persistent, urgent demand for talent is our primary focus. This emphasis on talent drives our policy priorities. The Washington tech sector creates jobs ten times faster than our local schools can supply people ready to take those jobs. Meanwhile, very capable workers remain underemployed due to limited access to career paths into tech. Therefore, the majority of WTIA programs and efforts are focused on helping tech companies with talent recruitment, workforce development, and employee retention.
WTIA also serves as a convener, collaborator, and subject matter expert on other policy areas that affect industry: federally, state and locally. Focuses include:
FederalTech apprenticeships, workforce diversity, immigration reform, cyber security regulations, privacy regulations, tax code revisions
StateComputer science education, tech apprenticeships, workforce diversity, rural broadband access, privacy regulations, portable benefits, autonomous vehicles, blockchain regulations, drone regulations, labor regulations, tax code
CityCivic collaboration, workforce diversity, labor regulations, entrepreneurship support
