MEMBERSHIP PACKET 2017

XtremeWinds is excited to welcome you to the 2017 season! For decades, percussion and

color guard performers have been offered a strong and vibrant indoor competitive experience

tailored to the off-season winter months. The advent of WGI Winds has now kicked down the “final

wall” of the indoor activity with the inclusion of a competitive arena for our brass and woodwind

players who share a passion for the marching arts. We at XtremeWinds see this as a golden

opportunity to form a lasting partnership with our local music education community in the Mid-

Atlantic region by offering a national-level competitive Winds unit.

World-class equipment, a highly experienced design and instructional staff, competitive

tuition fees, a weekend-only rehearsal schedule, local competition in the Tournament Indoor

Association, and participation in the WGI World Championships are just a few of the many

wonderful things that XtremeWinds has to offer! We are ready to hit the ground running and

cannot wait to bring our unique vision to life in our inaugural 2017 season. We hope that you will

become a part of it!

XtremeWinds is currently casting for the following performers:

Flute - Clarinet - Alto Saxophone - Tenor Saxophone - Baritone Saxophone

Trumpet - Mellophone - Baritone - Tuba - Synthesizer - Drum Set

Vibraphone - Marimba - Percussion

The goal of this membership packet is to give each prospective performer an idea of what

XtremeWinds is all about, explain the responsibilities that come along with joining the ensemble,

and provide all necessary information for the lead up to our Membership Weekend on November

26th and 27th, 2016. Be sure to like us on Facebook for ongoing information, and don’t hesitate to

XTREMEWINDS IS A SUBSIDIARY OF XTREME DRUM CORPS; A NEW JERSEY 501(C)3 NON PROFIT CORPORATION

WHAT IS XTREMEWINDS?

XtremeWinds was founded in 2015 as a subsidiary of Xtreme Drum Corps with the goal of

putting out a highly competitive WGI Winds teams for the 2016-2017 season. We have spent the

last year building an organizational base and developing a strategy for success; both short and long-term. Our overall philosophy as an organization is such:

“Xtreme Drum Corps strives to achieve these three basic goals: The first goal is to attract, train and further the

artistic skills of men and women of all ages. The second is to teach life skills that include teamwork, conflict

resolution, leadership, and time management, skills that forever change the lives of our participants. The third

basic goal is to give a diverse group of people the opportunity to not only hear wonderful music and witness an

extraordinary performance, but also to give them the opportunity to become a participating member of this very

special brand of combined art, music, and pageantry. Our programs produce not only dedicated and talented

artists, but also self-sufficient, confident people who forever carry with them the positive effects that their

behavior and talents have created.”

Design Philosophy

The XtremeWinds design philosophy is to present a program that is modern, unique, and relevant

to the 21st century pageantry arts. Use of many electronic voices, a heavy investment in a modern

movement program, and a musical score that combines wind ensemble, jazz, and rock influences

reference the trends that young performers are seeking in the ‘new pageantry’ world. We are

inspired by teams such as The Bluecoats Drum and Bugle Corps, Carolina Crown Drum and Bugle

Corps, RhythmX Percussion and Winds, Aimachi Winds, Music City Mystique Indoor Percussion, and

Pride of Cincinnati Winterguard. Our goal is to provide our members with a vehicle that will not

only provide an amazing performance experience, but will also help them learn and grow in to top performers in this activity.

Staff and Faculty Philosophy

When putting together our faculty and staff, our philosophy was to combine professional educators,

strong leaders, and seasoned performers with one goal in mind: to make XtremeWinds the

premiere Winds venue in the Mid-Atlantic region! On the leadership end, our Assistant Director

Zachary Gursky is a seasoned Drum Major, and has led both the Phantom Regiment Drum and

Bugle Corps and the Windsor Regiment Drum and Bugle Corps. Our Music and Woodwind

Specialist, Michael Drobish, is a saxophone and Music Education graduate from the University of

the Arts in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and has been a band director at Mechanicsburg High School

and Bensalem High School. Mr. Drobish is currently the band director at William Tennent High

School in Warminster, Pennsylvania. Nicole Franklin, our Performance Specialist, has her BFA in

Acting and Performance from Otterbein University, and is a founder of the Cincinnati Shakespeare

Festival. Our Movement Specialist, Jaclyn Dolan, is an alumni of the Field of View Winterguard,

the Blackwatch Winterguard, and was a color guard staff member for the C2 Drum and Bugle Corps.

Music and Brass specialist Eli Mudrick, a graduate of Temple University, was a long-time Trumpet

performer in the Cadets Drum and Bugle Corps, completing his tenure with the now legendary

Angels and Demons production. On top of our in-house faculty, XtremeWinds will be bringing in

top consultants to evaluate and educate our performers with the very latest in music education teaching philosophies.

Training Philosophy

XtremeWinds has invested a lot of time in to putting together a ‘Three Point Training Program’

that will enable our performers to engage the audience and judging community at the highest level.

Our Music Training will be a hybrid of the Xtreme Downey Method (Blue Devils) and the H2KSound

Method (Carolina Crown and Avon High School). Our Movement Training will be based on the

Laban Movement Analysis philosophy that engages the “whole body approach” meshed with both

modern and traditional dance principles. Our performance style will use the Coarse Acting

Method that reinforces a grand style that will reach the audience at the top of the stands. We are

confident that this approach to training will prepare our performers not only for a successful

XtremeWinds experience, but also put them in a position to be at the top of their game when they

return to their local school programs or prepare for future DCI endeavors.

Competitive Philosophy

While the education of our performers is at the pinnacle of our priorities at XtremeWinds, we are

fully invested in to putting out a highly competitive program in YEAR ONE! You can be assured as a

performer that your designers and staff will have a complete, highly-produced program ready to be

put on the floor at the very first rehearsal. We are seeking performers that are committed to a

vision of excellence at the highest level. This will require hard-work, a rehearsal mantra of doing

the right things for the right reasons, and a strong dedication to your craft. By seamlessly weaving

music, marching, movement, and performance in a unique and creative way, our goal is to offer our

performers an unparalleled artistic experience and provide them with the complete training

necessary to make it come to life!

STEPS TO MEMBERSHIP

Step 1: Familiarize!

Take some time to see what Winds is all about. We suggest viewing ensembles such as Aimachi Winds, RhythmX Winds,

and Avon High School Winds on YouTube to get an idea of the possibilities of this still-growing activity! Does this inspire

you? Is this something that you would like to be a part of?

Step 2: Evaluate!

Go through the Calendar and Financial Responsibilities pages of this packet. Is XtremeWinds something that you are

ready to fully commit to? Is this something that you can afford with fundraising?

Step 3: Socialize!

Like us on Facebook to receive updated information on XtremeWinds! Get the word out to your friends about this

amazing opportunity! It’s always better to perform with friends!

Step 4: Register!

Contact us at XtremeWinds.org to receive your instrument-specific Audition Packet. Make sure to include any questions

that you or your parent/guardian may have, and don’t forget to let us know what instrument(s) that you would like to

audition on!

Step 5: Pre-Audition! (optional)

Check out the Audition Process pages of this packet to find out how to secure your spot early! Pre-Auditions will be

accepted starting September 15th, 2016!

Step 6: Membership Weekend!

Get ready to have a blast on November 26th and 27th, 2016 at XtremeWinds Membership Weekend! Our dedicated

faculty is committed to your growth and development! Make sure to have your Membership Form, Medical and Liability

Form, and $50.00 Membership Day Fee upon arrival!

XTREMEWINDS AUDITION PROCESS

XtremeWinds is excited to offer two methods of audition for the 2017 performance ensemble:

Pre-Audition

Due to many inquiries regarding video auditions, performers will be able to submit their audition via Youtube

from September 15th to November 15th, 2016. Audition Packets will be sent out to those who have

registered on September 12th, 2016. This video should be of excellent sound and video quality and include:

A performance of the C, Bb, Eb, and F concert scales, two octaves if possible in quarter and eighth

notes. Also include the chromatic scale starting at concert Bb, two octaves if possible, performed

in eighth note triplets

A long tone exercise from your Audition Packet

An excerpt from any solo piece for your instrument – 45 seconds to 1 minute long

A full demonstration of the show excerpts from your Audition Packet

A demonstration of your marching technique (any style accepted) showcasing both your upper

and lower body technique

A demonstration of the plié, tendu, and relevé from your Audition Packet

There is no pre-audition for percussion due to the heavy use of electronics in our program

Upon review by our show designer, XtremeWinds will either offer you a tentative spot, or give you pointers

on what to improve upon for resubmission. To qualify for pre-audition, performers must have paid their

$50.00 Membership Fee and submitted both their signed Membership Form and Medical & Liability Form.

Performers who successfully complete the pre-audition process are still required to participate in

Membership Weekend, but will forego a formal one-on-one audition. These performers will be evaluated

solely on ability to take instruction, work ethic, positive attitude, and overall maturity. Barring any issues in

those areas, the performer will automatically be offered a spot in XtremeWinds.

We believe that this approach will be beneficial to several types of performers:

Those who experience severe anxiety in a formal one-on-one audition setting

Those who want an honest assessment of their skills before auditions

Those need extra time to get ahead on their financial responsibilities

Those who would like to audition on more than one instrument

Instructions on submitting your pre-audition will be posted to XtremeWinds.org on September 12th, 2016

Membership Weekend

Performers that would like to forego the pre-audition will audition during Membership Weekend on

November 26th and 27th, 2016. This will be an education-based weekend focused on training,

performance, and team-building. The XtremeWinds staff will teach and review all skills that will be

evaluated in your formal audition, both musically and visually.

Performers will be evaluated on the following during the course of the weekend:

Music

Visual

General

Sound quality

Intonation

Rhythmic Accuracy

Articulation

Posture

Horn Carriage

Marching Technique

Body Awareness

Ability to apply instruction

Work Ethic

Attitude

Maturity

All performers who plan on attending XtremeWinds Membership Weekend must have their $50.00

Membership Weekend fee paid in full upon arrival on November 26th, 2016. Auditioning performers must

also have their Membership Form and Medical & Liability Form completed at this time.

Performers who are auditioning at Membership Weekend are encouraged to request their instrument-

specific Audition Packet at XtremeWinds.org

XTREMEWINDS FINANCIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

At XtremeWinds, we are extremely lucky to have a strong parent organization that allows

us to charge less per performer than most other ensembles that compete in the Winter Guard

International Championships Arena. Xtreme Drum Corps provides XtremeWinds with our

equipment truck, brass instruments, percussion and electronic equipment, website hosting, and our

necessary insurances. Due to their generosity we are able to pass these savings along to our membership.

That being said, the organization still has major expenses due to rehearsal space rental,

transportation fees to and from shows, hotel fees for championships in Dayton, meal expenses, staff

expenses, circuit registration fees, instrument repair expenses, costume and design expenses, and many other small but necessary costs that make a successful non-profit organization run smoothly.

While we aim to assist every eager performer with financial restrictions, it is necessary to

cover these expenses, and a combination of early planning and dedication to our many fundraising

opportunities should make XtremeWinds affordable to every member! We encourage performers

that have a financial restriction to participate in our Pre-Audition process so that they can begin their fundraising endeavors early.
