MEMO FOR RECORD

SUBJECT: ENGINEERING Briefing for OH Personnel to be stationed aboard the

USSC-946 Ascendant Dawn (Scheduled Nov. 2219)

DATE: June 12, 2219

Given the recent media clashes between the USSC and the DCA over the nature of the

Outbound Hope Mission, High Command has requested a reminder to all parties involved

regarding the duties and responsibility of all USSC personnel.

Included in this memo is the text of the original briefing to all ENGINEERING personnel.

Please review both personally and with your staff, and refer all questions to D. Iger

(USSC) or J. Harris (DCA). High Command has requested avoiding contact with the DCA until

the political matter has been resolved.

With any of the three Refitted Roosevelt

Class Destroyers, there are System Inte-

gration Nodes that integrate original ship

systems with state-of-the-art Windfall re-

fits and upgrades. The Ascendant Dawn is

an ideal candidate for this mission not

only because she continues to be a touch-

stone of American ingenuity and commit-

ment, but she also was built to withstand

the rigors of combat maneuvers while em-

ploying the revolutionary Linear Skip

Drive.

During the period that she was decommis-

sioned and served as a declassified museum

ship, the Ascendant Dawn drew hundreds of

thousands of guests. Classified naval

technology and critical systems were

therefore removed from the vessel or iso-

lated from public access as part of this

transition.

Recommissioning the Ascendant Dawn for the

current Outbound Hope Mission is a multi-

faceted effort to bring security and unity

to the Outbound Hope Fleet as they begin a

new era in American Extraplanetary Colony

Expansion. The ship will serve a Naval Se-

curity and Command role as the Flagship of

the Outbound Fleet during the transit

phase of the Mission.

During this time and until Colonial Gov-

ernment is given full command of the Mis-

sion, the Ascendant Dawn will coordinate

and direct all fleet operations. She will

direct and command all military assets

within the Outbound Fleet under the super-

vision of all Flag Officers, culminating

with the Fleet Admiral.

With successful establishment of the 354-

PA Colony, the ship will return to her

role as an icon representing the heritage

of the new colony. It is the desire of the

USSC, the DCA, and the federal government

that the Ascendant Dawn once again act as

an orbital touchstone of American excel-

lence throughout the new star system’s

history. The museum will be reconstituted

so that future generations of colonists

and visitors will be able to learn about

how they arrived in the new system and be

able to view it as their forebears did.

THE ASCENDANT DAWN

O.H. MISSION BRIEFING: Phase ONE During Phase I of the Outbound Hope Mis-

sion, the Ascendant Dawn will serve as

Flag and Military Escort to the OH Fleet.

As crewmen in the Engineering Teams, your

role is to ensure safe and efficient oper-

ation of the ship at large, maintain and

repair ship systems, coordinate critical

resources, and serve in a damage control

capacity as required. Specific duties are

as follows:

ASSIST the Quartermaster: Engineering Crewmen will coordinate with

the Quartermaster to make efficient use of

ship resources. Repair and diagnostic

equipment, repair and replacement compo-

nents, and resources needed by outside de-

partments are to be allocated as needed

through the Quartermaster and Engineering

Crew. Sufficient resources for all contin-

gencies have been allocated in support of

your mission.

Maintain & Repair Ship Systems The Ascendant Dawn has been retrofitted

with current generation systems including

but not limited to:

• (SAI) Systems Artificial Intelligence

• Dedicated EarthSim NearGrav Plating

• Military-Grade Bootstrap Drive System

• 308kg Tungsten Americanium Railguns

• Mark 34 Series Variable Yield Missile

Ports

• CombatSys Series 17 Combat Drones

• Windfall Series 6 ’Franklin’

Multiconfig Drones

• State-of-the-art Crew and Command

Terminals

• V-Tech Ship System Integration Nodes

The upkeep and repair of these systems and

others is the primary responsibility of

Engineers. Most interaction with these

retrofitted systems will be through the V-

Tech SSINs. Built from modern materials

and fully integrated with ship systems,

these Nodes will allow Engineers to inter-

act with effectively all aspects of the

vessel’s needs with the advantage of using

current standard tools and diagnostic

equipment. This seamless integration will

greatly benefit Crew during the execution

of their duties by minimizing the need to

actively navigate between multiple genera-

tions of military hardware.

Direct & Queue Repair Drones The Ascendant Dawn is refitted with up-

graded automated Repair and Maintenance

Drones to operate in areas of the ship in-

accessible to the crew outside of naval

yard facilities. Allocation and direction

of these systems falls under the purview

of the Engineering Crew.

Operate System Nodes V-Tech Ship System Integration Nodes are

designed to serve as a seamless portal be-

tween the Engineer and attached ship sys-

tems. The V-Tech SSIN is a dedicated ac-

cess point to bridge the gap between the

original military hardware of the AD and

current technology, tools, and repair pro-

cedures. These Nodes are visually distinct

from the original AD systems and allow

Crew to perform diagnostics and repair

procedures using the latest in Windfall

and USSC technology. Replacing components,

manual reconfiguration, system bypasses,

diagnostics, and more can be enacted from

Nodes with standard Engineering tools and

equipment. (Nodes use integrated MolyCirc

and NanoTech components, and therefore

must always be shielded in the Class 1

field zone of an active Jump Buffer in the

event of Linear Skip Drive activation to

maintain safe operation.)

Assign Ship Resources Some ship systems utilize the semi-fluid

crystal helium thermal transfer medium

that was standard to USSC military vessels

during the end of the Solar Wars as a uni-

versal Coolant. Expended Coolant could be

reclaimed and used as reaction mass for

AIE systems or stored and eventually re-

processed in yard facilities. This system

was integral to Roosevelt design and is

still active. The AD maintains an active

supply of Coolant that Engineering is re-

sponsible for distributing to critical

systems on an as-needed basis. Weapon Sys-

tems, Emergency Life Support, Close Maneu-

vering and Emergency Maneuvering are exam-

ples of systems that tap into the Coolant

reserve. Allocation is made through appro-

priate Engineering terminals.

Reconfigure Ship Terminals In the event of damage or malfunction, En-

gineers can work with SAI and ship systems

to actively reconfigure one type of crew

terminal to serve as a replacement or

backup terminal. As an example; Primary

Navigation Control can be transferred to

an adjacent (or remote) station as re-

quired by Command should a terminal become

inoperable. This allows Command operation-

al flexibility in the event of emergency

procedures unforeseen circumstances.

Environmental Hazard Isolation and Mitigation Emergency Procedures include provisions

for shipboard environmental hazard and

quarantine eventualities. Should an area

of the vessel become an environmental haz-

ard, Engineering is responsible for secur-

ing the affected area and assessing threat

to crew and ship systems. Lockdown condi-

tions and procedures are included in crew

training materials.

Once the Colonial Government has been giv-

en authority and the Colony is estab-

lished, the Ascendant Dawn may be returned

to its status as an American Heritage

Site. All V-Tech SSINs are to be deac-

tivated as part of the AD stand down from

Active Military Service to its ultimate

role as a keeper of our sacred traditions

once again. This will stand down combat

readiness and deactivate combat capability

O.H. MISSION BRIEFING: Phase TWO aboard ship. Once complete, access to the

ship by personnel not carrying Roosevelt

System clearance and the civilian colonial

population will be permitted.

Sealed orders include stand-down proce-

dures that will disable combat systems and

secure classified technology as precursor

to complete Phase II transition.
