MEMORANDUM A01 OF 2012 To: Heads of Examinations and Assessment
National, Provincial, District, Regional and Circuit AET Coordinators Umalusi Public Adult Learning Centre Managers
GETC: ABET LEVEL 4 EXAMINATION AND ASSESSMENT PROCESSES 2012/13 Dear Colleagues Your attention is drawn to the following examinations and assessment processes for the 2012/13 GETC: ABET Level 4 qualification. Kindly ensure that the issues raised are attended to. 1. This memorandum A01 of 2012 consists of 17 pages including the attachments.
2. The Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) approved June and November 2012
timetables, attached as ANNEXURE A, which are hereby handed over to the PEDs to ensure
that preparations for both examinations are done on time and appropriately.
3. The national marking memoranda discussion meetings schedules for both the June and
November 2012 examinations are attached as ANNEXURE B. The venue for all marking
memoranda meetings will be 222 Struben Street, Sol Plaatje House in Pretoria.
4. PEDs are requested to send both the chief marker and the internal moderator for every learning
area offered to the national marking memoranda discussion meetings. These officials must be
assisted to pre-mark 20 scripts and compile an analysis of the performances (ANNEXURE C).
You are advised to please organise pre-marking sessions in the provincial head offices in order
to manage the compilation of these pre-marking reports. The completion and availability of the
reporting template replaces the need to transport scripts to Pretoria for the meetings.
5. Please discourage learners from registering for seven or more learning areas because they only
need a minimum of five or six learning areas depending on the correct combinations. This is
determined by the credit allocation as specified in ANNEXURE D.
6. Management plans from PEDs on how the June and November 2012 GETC: ABET Level 4
examinations will be conducted, administered and managed are requested to reach the DHET on
or before Friday 10 February 2012.
7. PEDs must ensure that Site-Based Assessments (SBAs) for the 2012 academic year released by
DHET on Friday, 11 November 2011, are at the PALCs when teaching and learning commences.
Orientation workshops for educators with regard to these SBAs ought to be conducted by all
examining bodies. Note that the SBAs and Learning Area Examinations and Assessment
Guidelines for ECDV4, INCT4 and WHRT4 have been dispatched to PEDs on Friday, 20 January
2012. Please ensure that all learners registered for these learning areas get copies on time
(ANNEXURE E). The first examination on the three learning areas will be in November 2012
onwards (refer to the November 2012 timetable for actual examination dates).
8. The monitoring and moderation management plans for the 2012 SBAs at Centre, Cluster,
District/Regional and Provincial levels must be made available to the DHET on or before Friday,
24 February 2012.
9. The June 2012 question papers will be handed over to PEDs on Friday, 30 March 2012 for
reprographics while the November 2012 question papers will be handed over to PEDs on Friday,
31 August 2012.
10. Submission of daily reports on the conduct, administration and management of the GETC: ABET
Level 4 June and November 2012 examinations are mandatory. All reports should reach the
DHET on or before 10: 00 in the morning a day after the actual examination has been written. A
composite report and a list of all irregularities on the conduct of the entire examination must be
forwarded to the DHET on Monday, 25 June 2012 and on Wednesday, 28 November 2012.
11. Pre-standardisation and standardisation meeting dates for the June 2012 examination will be
Thursday, 19 July 2012 at 14: 00 and Friday, 20 July 2012 respectively. For November 2012
Thursday, 13 December 2012 at 14:00 and Friday, 14 December 2012 respectively.
12. Capturing of marks deadlines for both examinations must be not later than 16:30 on Thursday,
12 July 2012 and Monday, 11 December 2012 respectively.
13. Interventions to be undertaken by PEDs during the 2012 academic year focussing on supporting
teaching, learning and assessment in the GETC: ABET Level 4 qualification must be
communicated to the DHET on or before Thursday, 29 March 2012.
14. PEDs are requested to forward to the DHET composite reports on moderation of SBAs and
marking for both the June and November 2012 examinations sessions. Deadlines for SBA
moderation reports are on or before Friday, 18 May 2012 for June 2012 examination and Friday,
26 October 2012 for November 2012 examination. Marking reports deadlines are on or before
Friday, 13 July 2012 for June 2012 examination and Monday, 10 December 2012 for November
2012 examination.
15. Please note that all 26 learning areas Examinations and Assessment Guidelines are due for
revision in 2012 by the DHET. The revised copies of the Examinations and Assessment
Guidelines will be available on or before Tuesday, 28 August 2012.
16. PEDs must forward the state of readiness reports to the DHET on a given template on or before
Monday, 14 May 2012 for the June 2012 examination and Thursday, 27 September 2012 for the
November 2012 examination.
