"He has protected us the whole way we've gone and in all the nations through which we've passed."

(Joshua 24:17b)

A quick history lesson ... Moses led the Israelites to the edge of the Promised Land (Israel), but Joshua is

the one who led them into their new land and was with them as they struggled to claim the land which

God had promised to them. Given the difficulties of claiming their new land, many began to wonder about

God. "Why would this God make things so hard for us?" And so, they began to question their faith in God

and wondered to themselves, "Maybe we would be better off worshiping some other god ... a god who

might not make things so difficult for us." This is the backdrop when Joshua offers a firm defense of God

and reminds the people just how good God has been to them along the way. "Listen to me," he says. "God

has been with us every step of the way. He has brought us this far, and He will never let us down. You fol-

low whomever you want to follow, but as for me and my family, we choose to follow God."

How easy it is for us to forget the goodness of God across the years of our lives. As I reflect on my life, I

have had it relatively easy. I have never worried about where my next meal was coming from. I always

knew I had a roof over my head. I have an awesome family who is there for me no matter what. I drive a

good car and am able to pay my bills on time. This is the way it has been for most of my life.

However ... There have also been days when I worried about what tomorrow would bring ... fears over bro-

ken relationships and death, fears over my finances, fears over my future. There have been days when

"hope" seemed like an overused religious word, and it had no real meaning to me. There have even been

days when I wondered if there really was a God.

Have you ever had days like that?

If you have, let's listen to Joshua. Let's take a peek over our shoulder at the

story of our lives. And if we do, we'll see that God has brought us this far, and

He's not about to let us down now. Sometimes, it's hard to find God in the diffi-

cult times of our lives. But He's always been there, and He always will be.

Thanks be to God!

Praise Him!

CURRENT NEEDS:

Here we go again!

Nifty Over Fifty Our January meeting was held at the church with 30 people attending. We played bingo and had a Hobo lunch. We recognized our January

birthdays and Judy had devotions.

We will eat at a cafeteria in Salisbury for our February meeting. Plans were made to stay at the church in March. At that time, we will have Debbie Shields from Hospice present our program. She will educate us

on Hospice care and the resources available to us.

This is a great fellowship - come and join us on the 3rd Tuesday of every

month! Susie Johnson

Please pray for Scott Boggs, Woody Chavis, Allen Milem, and Chris

Prince as they serve faithfully as local police officers.

A huge thank you to Dionna Milem for taking over

the website ministry. Dionna develops websites for a

living so she‘ll be able to keep up with the trends and

needs of the current user. THANKS Dionna!!

The Walking by Faith Sunday School class invites you to a new

series, beginning 2/16, entitled: gods at war by Kyle Idleman

You are invited to participate in a video series called gods at war,

which challenges us with the thought that perhaps all sin springs

from the same source - idolatry. It is a six week series focusing on

five false gods in particular: gods of pleasure, love, money,

power, and the god of me. The series was filmed in a docudrama

style featuring real people telling their true stories. These compel-

ling stories point the way to victory as we see the kind of life trans-

forming power that Christ is ready to pour out in our lives as well.

As a result, seekers, non-Christians, and lifelong Christians alike

will all be moved to grow their relationship with Christ.

The Walking by Faith Class is on the second floor of the Fellow-

ship building. Come give us a try!

Trustees

Boy Scout Troop 16 Valentine's Day Dinner

Scout Troop 16 Spring BBQ Saturday, March 8th, 2014 10 am - 3 pm $8.00 for one of the following: 3 BBQ Sandwiches or $2.75 ea 1 BBQ Plate, 1 lb. BBQ Baked Goods Available See Sarah Price for questions.

First things first ... a GIANT thank you to Jerry Carter, Steve Lambert, and Judy Brown for

their faithful service to God and to the Board of Trustees over the years. Their terms expired

in 2013 and, as such, they will be taking a well-deserved break from the Board. Jerry has

served for six consecutive years, three as our Board Chairperson. Words cannot express

the value of his contribution to this church. Please take the time to express your apprecia-

tion to Jerry, to Steve, and to Judy for their hard work for and with the church.

Welcome to our new Board members - Wayne Anderson, Jane Measmer, Kale Sloop, and

Doris Aldridge. These folks are already hard at work and will join current members of the

Board - Ben Edwards, Robin Heintz, Mike Morgan, Zac McCombs, and B.L. Starnes. You

have a strong Board of Trustees and are in good hands!

Among the many issues currently on the plate of the Board of Trustees is an investigation

into the possibilities of replacing our current heating and air conditioning systems. These

systems are quickly becoming maintenance nightmares. And if were not for the dedication

and good work of B.L. Starnes, these systems would not have lasted us as long as they

have. Please thank B.L. when you see him ... along with his able assistants Jerry Carter and

Steve Lambert. Our church has saved thousands of dollars over the years thanks to these

men. Please go out of your way to say "thank you" for the gifts of their time and talent!

From van maintenance to leaky faucets ... from property and liability insurance to lawn

care ... from parsonage upkeep to facility maintenance ... These men and women are dedi-

cated to helping us achieve our mission - to "move the message" of Jesus Christ to those

around us. They do a fantastic job. Thanks be to God for their service!

DIDJA know that we have children’s activity bags in the narthex? EMILY STEWART creates them (and makes them seasonally appropriate)

for the kids.

She put pew cards in the pews also to tell par-ents that they are available. Be sure to use (and return) the bags and thank Emily for her creativ-

ity and efforts!

DASMARINAS, Philippines —Volunteers and

staff of the United Methodist

Committee on Relief loaded a

cargo truck with bright yellow

bags filled with relief goods,

and are ready to begin a 26-

hour trek to typhoon-stricken

communities in the central

Philippines.

The volunteers, mainly Filipino university and

seminary students, spent two days making food

packages filled with rice, oil, salt, brown sugar,

mongo beans (a versatile lentil), sardines, cook-

ing oil, and coffee for survivors of Typhoon Hai-

yan, which struck the Philippines on Nov. 8.

Enough bags were filled to provide 1,500 fami-

lies (or a total of 7,500 persons) with food sta-

ples to last about a week. Survivors of the cate-

gory 5 super storm will also receive water purifi-

cation tablets.

The 42-foot, 10-wheel wing van will be part of a

caravan of three UMCOR vehicles carrying the

vital supplies, UMCOR staff, and a handful of the

dozens of volunteers who showed up at the UM-

COR Philippines office here to load the truck.

The caravan will leave on its long trek from the

UMCOR Philippines office here in the northern

part of the country and will travel along the archi-

pelago, through about 10 provinces, to reach

survivors in the hard-hit city of Tacloban in Leyte

Province. The ride will include a four-hour ferry

trip between provinces.

“Thanks to the generous outpouring of United

Methodists, this is just the first of

several shipments UMCOR antici-

pates making to assist the survi-

vors,” said the Rev. Jack Amick,

UMCOR assistant general secretary

for International Disaster Relief, who

traveled from New York headquar-

ters and will ride with the caravan.

UMCOR has already granted a total of more

than $180,000 US to its field operations in the

Philippines to provide both fast relief assistance

and long-term recovery and rehabilitation aid.

Recovery is expected to take years, as the dev-

astation provoked by the storm was great and

widespread.

Typhoon Haiyan destroyed more than 250,000

homes and impacted more than 11 million peo-

ple across 44 provinces. At least 3,500 people

were killed in the super storm known locally as

Yolanda.

“Rebuilding will take years,” Amick said. “We will

move forward with the Filipino people, counting

on God’s grace and the support of United Meth-

odists and people of goodwill everywhere.”

Planned to begin in early summer, it

is a weeknight worship service tar-

geted to the people in our immediate

community who cannot or would not

attend a traditional church on

Sunday mornings.

Angel Tree

December 13th

Partnering with Fred L. Wilson Elementary

and the parents of the “angels”, we’ll have

a gift wrapping party - among other things -

so that Santa can deliver the gifts.

Look what’s cookin’ at MUMC!

As we seek to "move the message" of Christ to our neighbors, we are developing a closer than ever partnership with Fred L. Wilson Elementary School. Several of us met with Principal Erin Anderson and Curriculum Coordinator Mandy Campbell and have identified several ways to connect with them. Erin and Mandy will help us identify families in need for our Backpack Giveaway this summer and for our Angel Tree ministry in December. We will be promoting our Paws for Celebration (pet blessing on May 3rd) by sending information home with each child in the school. In addition, we are finding ways to support teachers and staff at Fred L. Wilson, letting them know we care. And finally, we are developing opportunities for MUMC church members to connect one-on-one with students who could use a little help and love from a grown-up friend. Stay tuned for more!
