GLITZ AND GLAMMetalsmithing: Jewlery Design Learn the fundamentals of metalsmithing and jewelry design. We will explore jewelry fabrication techniques including sawing, piercing, riveting and texturing. Starting with an extensive exploration of the various ways to texture metals, you can then design and fabricate a pierced pendant using these techniques. Textured & Keumboo Jewelry Keumboo is a traditional Korean technique for adding high karat gold to silver jewelry. Learn metal texturing and diffusion bonding technique in this hands on class. We will cover techniques to develop and excecute patterns in 24K gold foil attached to simple sterling silver forms. Designed for beginners, few fabrication techniques or skills are required to create unique and beautiful jewelry. Those with previous metals experience welcome! Intro to Lapidary Lapidary is the art of cutting, polishing, or engraving stones. See how you can take a rough rock such as an agate or jasper and turn it into a work of art suitable for incorporating into jewelry. Designed for the beginner and a great complement to jewelry making. Learn safety and the basic skill techniques to saw, grind, sand, and polish many different types of rock into cabochons. A cabochon is a gemstone which has been shaped and polished as opposed to faceted. The resulting form is usually a convex top with a flat bottom. Successful completion of the course results in certification to utilize the lab during open shop periods. Meet at the Madison Gem & Mineral Club facility off the W. Beltline. Etched Copper Pendants Learn basic metal etching concepts and materials in this hands-on jewelry-making workshop! You will create an etched copper pendant, while learning metal preparation, use of resist, etching baths and finishing your pendant. We concentrate on designs that involve no sawing or drilling. Needle Felting with WoolUsing colored wool roving (wool before it is spun into yarn) and a barbed needle, create art onto most fabrics for color art work, fashion a piece of jewelry, add as fabric embellishments and create 3 dimensional objects. Wool Wet Felted Pouch/PurseCome create a small pouch (for eye glasses, cell phone) or purse using colorful woll roving (wool before it is spun into yarn) enhanced with colorful silk threads. Wet felting with wool is an old art form being taken to new levels with bright colors and applications. This is not knitting and felting. The Art of Henna Henna has been used in the eastern Mediterranean to adorn the human body as part of social and holiday celebrations since the late Bronze Age. Markings consistent with Henna have been found on the statuettes of young women dating between 1500 and 500 BC. Using this organic plant based dye you will learn how to use henna to create beautiful, temporary tattoo patterns. Sandhill Crane Weekend OdysseyThe staging of Sandhill Cranes at the Jasper-Pulaski National Wildlife Area in northern Indiana is one of the more imposing spectacles in all of nature. Assembled in one area can be as many as 20,000 cranes! This is the second largest stopover area for Sandhills in the US. Join our weekend odyssey to witness this impressive natural occurrence and learn about this regal and once-endangered bird. On Sunday we will visit the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore. 2 Days. TRIP LEADER: Kim Tschudy, naturalist, author, itinerant hiker, experienced instructor, 19th year leading this trip.

Sacred Spaces, Haunted PlacesSpend a day touring southern/southwestern Wisconsin and NW Illinois to visit several sites that have become special places in the heart of one who takes the road less traveled. During the journey we will visit the ghost towns of Exeter and Exeter Union Cemetery, Moscow. Haunted places? Then we will travel on to Bloody Lake near Woodford, WI. Sacred and haunted? From Woodford we will travel to New Diggings, WI where we will visit an old time bar and the oldest Masonic Hall in Wisconsin. Time permitting we may visit the Matthew Kelly Church and the Father Kelley’s home and/or travel on to Council Hills, Illinois. On the return trip we will stop at Hauge Lutheran Church near Daleyville. Explore sacred and haunted spaces - join us for a unique outing. Course fee includes transportation (departs from campus). Grazing Wisconsin: The NorthwestExplore Wisconsin’s rich agricultural heritage as we discover where and how our food is produced and how some of our favorite beverages are made. We will focus on smaller, family-owned, and organic businesses in Northwestern Wisconsin. Starting with brunch at the classic Norski Nook and finishing with a tour of cranberry bogs, we will see how maple syrup, cheese, craft beers, organic wines, and ciders are made, and will tour farms where dairy cattle, beef cattle, bison, poultry, and produce are raised and grown. We will learn how community supported agriculture works, dine at popular regional restaurants, and lodge in unique and comfortable B&B’s. Course fee includes transportation, tour fees, and double-occupancy lodging with breakfasts. Course fee does not include other meals or incidental expenses. Space is limited, so register by September 9. 4 Days. TRIP LEADER: Heidi Conde is a former DNR educator, an experienced trip leader, and a longtime resident of Northwestern Wisconsin.

Growing Blueberries, Azaleas & RhododendronsAnyone who has tried to grow blueberries, azaleas or rhododendrons in Dane County knows it isn’t easy - but it can be done! Learn the tips and tricks to make your blueberry plants a success. The topics covered include soil type, soil and water pH, methods for testing pH, how to transplant shrubs, varieties that thrive in our climate, pruning, growing new plants from cuttings, and dealing with garden pests and other issues. Southern Wisconsin has a good climate for growing, but some effort is needed to get truly productive shrubs. We think the results are worth it! An optional 2nd discussion to test soil pH will be discussed in class. 1 Meeting. TEACHING ARTIST: Eric Johnson, a local gardener who grows blueberries, raspberries and prairie plants on Madison’s east side. In 2010, he harvested three gallons of fruit from his blueberry shrubs.

What if I need a Refund?

Full refund of course fees if we cancel a course for any reason. If you request a refund, A $5.00 Fee will be deducted from your refund. To recieve a refund, no-tice must be recieved by our office three (3) business days before the first class meeting. No refunds for inability to attend published rain dates. Refund of Membership fees requires return of Membership Card. Refunds for fees paid by cash or check can take up to 4 weeks to process.

What about Transfers and Credit Vouchers?

Transfers and Credit Vouchers are possible up to three business days prior to the starting date of any course. No Credit Voucher will be issued after second class session for multiple session courses. One-session and individual lesson courses require three business day minimum prior to class start date for Transfer or Credit Voucher re-quests. Credit Vouchers are good towards any course in the future and are transferable to another individual.

Returned Checks

A $30 fee is due on any returned check.
