• Aging is a part of human life. For many people, it sneaks up on them. A person may notice that they are not as active as they once were or they become more forgetful. The body and the brain begin to slow down but life goes on as usual for most people later in life. There is a big difference between trying to remember where you left your cell phone, your car keys or the television remote and dementia. Dementia is not just memory loss. Normal memory loss usually does not worsen tremendously as a person ages, whereas dementia tends to intensify over the course of months and years.

Dementia is caused by degeneration of the cerebral cortex or the part of the brain that is responsible for thoughts, memory and personality. The loss of brain cells in this area leads to permanent impairment of the brain that is characteristic of dementia, but memory loss is only one of several indications of dementia. Other symptoms include asking the same questions repeatedly, forgetting how to conduct basic tasks such as making coffee in the morning or writing checks to pay bills. Getting lost in places that are familiar or known to the individual is another characteristic of dementia. Other symptoms include repeating the same story over and over again word for word, sudden changes in mood and temperament and confusing common words such as using the word cup for bed. The mental decline in a person with dementia is severe enough to disrupt a person's everyday life.

The severity of dementia is measured by the ability to solve problems or to care for oneself. Some dementia patients forget to bathe or brush their teeth. Other determining factors include the amount of memory loss a person has suffered, the inability to judge situations accurately and being unable to solve problems. Dementia is not a normal part of aging while simple memory loss is seen as a common sign of getting older. Alzheimer's disease is the leading cause of dementia in 60-80% of cases, but it is not the only cause of memory loss.

Some types of memory loss are reversible. Depression can cause memory loss along with mixing some types of medications. A slight head injury can affect memory along with sustained alcohol abuse. Most of these problems, however, can usually be treated and memory improves.

The crucial fact to remember is that everyone will age and in doing so will suffer setbacks in memory, agility and overall health, but they will still be able to enjoy life. Many older people today perform some type of professional work or volunteer for a local agency or church. With dementia, that is not possible.
