GREETINGS

The Tigers play Kent State for the first time in pro-gram history on Friday at FedExPark. Dating back to 1978, Memphis has a record of 45-36 in three-game series against first time opponents. Home games in that scenario, the U of M sports a 34-26 mark. Un-der Coach Daron Schoenrock, the Tigers are 29-19 against first time opponents in a three-game series, 19-14 on the home turf.

GETTING RUNNERS ON BASE

Last season, when Memphis had 14 or more run-ners reach base in a game, the Tigers had a record of 26-15. On the other side, when the U of M had 13 or fewer base runners in a game, Memphis had a 5-13 mark. So far in 2013, Memphis is 9-4 when 14 or more reach base and 1-2 when having 13 or fewer base runners in a game.

OUTFIELD ASSISTS

Memphis has six outfield assists through 16 games. Of the six outfield assists, two have been at the plate to end an inning. Two of the remaining outfield assists happened at first base, one a double play and two other assists retired a runner at second base. Jake Little has two of the six assists while four other players have one each.

IRONMAN

Shortstop Ethan Gross has made 109 consecutive starts dating back to the second game of a double-header at East Carolina on March 26, 2011. If Gross starts each scheduled game this season he would tie the record for consecutive games started, which is held by Mike Dlugach (149).

ONE HIT AWAY

In all six of Memphis’ losses this season, the ty-ing run has been on base, at the plate or on deck. In the season opening loss to Illinois State, the tying run was on deck, but in the other five losses, the tying run stood on the diamond. In the 10 inning loss to Ar-kansas State, the tying run was on third. In two of the last three losses, Memphis has had the bases loaded when the final out was recorded. The Tigers had the tying run at the plate against Alabama with one out in the ninth, but couldn’t make a comeback.

Memphis has had 24 official at-bats with the bases full this season. The Tigers have mustered four hits in the situation, but have left the bases loaded in two of the last three losses. Bryce Beeler hit a bases clearing double in game two of the series against Buffalo for the Tigers fourth hit with the bases juiced. THE RUN AROUND

Memphis pitching has posted a 2.31 ERA so far al-lowing a total of 51 runs, 37 earned, in 16 outings. Going back to 1978, there have been three other oc-casions in which the pitching staff held the opposi-tion to 55 or fewer runs over the first 16 games. Prior to this season, the last time the Tigers achieved the feat was in 1984, allowing 43 runs. The table below shows the years that Memphis has limited oppo-nents to 50 or fewer runs in first 16 games and the win/loss record in those games.

BULLPEN THE DIFFERENCE?

Memphis’ bullpen has a 4-3 record with four saves so far and a 2.76 ERA. Through 16 games, the Mem-phis bullpen hadn’t posted an ERA under 4.00 since the 2008 season (4.25) prior to the start this season. Overall, the 2013 pitching staff has a 2.31 ERA, the best ERA among stats available dating back to 2008.

QUARTET OF LEFTIES

Memphis has started a left-handed pitcher in all 16 games this season. Looking at every Division I baseball squad, the Tigers are the only team to have a lefty start every game this season. California started southpaws in their first 10 games. Kentucky started lefties in their first six games, but a right-handed pitcher started in each team’s next contest. Only 12 other teams started three lefties to start the season, but in their fourth game, a right-hander took the hill.

OH-OH-OMAHA

For the first time since 2009, Memphis plays a team that is coming off a season that was capped off at the NCAA College World Series. Kent State made an impressive run to the grand stage last season. The Tigers are 9-32-1 all-time against teams that ad-vanced to the CWS the year before, 3-23 under head coach Daron Schoenrock. The last meeting, in 2009, was against Southern Miss after the Golden Eagles made it to the 2008 College World Series.

SWINGING WITH AN AXE

Memphis is one of two teams at the NCAA Divi-sion I level to use “Axe Bats”. Axe is an entirely new concept for bats, built on the fact that the old, round knob does not help the hitter. The patented Axe handle puts the bat in your fingertips for a consistent swing plane and a freer release.

Head Coach Daron Schoenrock employs the “freebie” award for each game. This season, each set of games notes will keep an eye on the freebie award. The categories of the freebie award are listed below with record in those games.
