TOP SCORES OF 2017ILLINI FALL TO MICHIGAN, STANFORDIllinois faced Michigan and Stanford in Ann Arbor, Michigan, last weekend. The Illini fell to both squads, posting a 404.000. Stanford won the tri-meet with a 417.550, and Michigan posted a 407.300. Alex Diab claimed the title on floor with a 14.200, Ngai split the pommel horse title with Stanford’s Modi, scoring a 14.800, and Tyson Bull earned the high bar event title with a season-best 15.050.

PARADISE RECEIVES WEEKLY CONFERENCE HONORIllini freshman Michael Paradise was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week by the conference office after posting a 14.200 on pommel horse against Michigan and Stanford. The honor is the first Big Ten Freshman of the Week nod for Paradise, and the third weekly conference accolade for an Illini gymnast. Paradise’s 14.200 was behind only teammate Brandon Ngai and Stanford’s Akash Modi, who both scored a 14.800.

ILLINOIS PLACES FIRST IN PUERTO RICOIllinois traveled to Carolina, Puerto Rico, last weekend to participate in the Puerto Rico Gymnastics Challenge. The Illini faced Michigan, Arizona State and the Puerto Rican and Spanish national teams. Illinois placed first, with a 409.450, and set season-bests on vault (71.750) and pommel horse (70.250) to close out the meet. Alex Diab’s season-high 15.000 earned him the floor title, Matt Foster won the title on pommel horse with a season-best 15.250, and Johnny Jacobson claimed the parallel bars title with a 14.300.

ILLINOIS DEFEATS IOWAThe Fighting Illini took down Iowa at home, 409.950-397.100. Illinois set a season-best mark on vault with a 71.500, keyed by Jacob Light and Bobby Baker each scoring a 14.450. In his season debut, Blake Martin added a 14.350 on vault. Alex Diab won his second floor title of the season with a 14.600, and Brandon Ngai’s 14.700 on pommel horse was good for his second title of the season in the event. Diab earned his second title of the day and fifth still rings title of the season, recording a 14.900, which ties his season-best mark. In his first appearance on parallel bars this season, Baker scored a 14.450, winning the title. On high bar, Tyson Bull earned his fourth tile on the event this year with a 14.250. Danny Graham made his collegiate debut with a 13.350 on rings.

QUIANA NAMED BIG TEN FRESHMAN OF THE WEEKIllinois freshman Sebastian Quiana was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week by the conference office following his performance at the Puerto Rico Gymnastics Challenge this past weekend. Quiana posted the highest score on floor by a freshman so far this year, with a career-best 14.750. The honor is the first Big Ten Freshman of the Week nod for Quiana, and the second weekly conference accolade for an Illini gymnast. Quiana’s stellar floor performance would have earned him the event title in Puerto Rico, but Diab posted a season-best 15.000 score to win it. The Illini posted a season-best 71.750 on floor, and the score was key to Illinois taking a commanding lead at the meet and securing a victory. Quiana also made his collegiate debut on parallel bars, scoring a 12.500.
