Upon his arrival in College Park in 1993, Sasho Cirovski has transformed Maryland into a national soccer power, leading the Terps to the 2008 and 2005 NCAA titles, seven College Cup appearances, and 15 conference titles, all the while producing numerous top-level professional players. Now entering his 26th season at Maryland, the 2005 NSCAA National Coach of the Year has instilled his passion for excellence in a soccer program that expects to compete for the national title every season.

During his tenure with the Terps, Maryland has been to the NCAA Tournament 24 times, advancing to the College Cup in eight of those years, including four-straight appearances from 2002-05, culminating in the NCAA title in 2005. The Terps have also captured eight conference tournament titles (1996, 2002, 2008, 2010, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016) and six conference regular season titles (2003, 2005, 2012, 2013, 2014, and 2016) during his stay in College Park.

The 2017 season saw Cirovski put his name into the college coaching record books once again, becoming just the ninth coach in Division I history to win 400 career matches. The Terps opened up the season with 13 straight games unbeaten (10-0-3) and completed a school record 30-game regular season unbeaten streak that dated back to 2015.

The 2016 season was one for the record books for the Terps, as the squad posted a program-record 15-game winning streak and also carried a program-record 25-game unbeaten streak through the final game of the year. Maryland - which boasted its first undefeated regular season at 16-0-2 - also captured its fifth consecutive tournament crown when it defeated Wisconsin, 2-1, in the title game in Westfield, Ind. The Terps also captured the regular season title and snagged the top overall seed in the NCAA Tournament. Maryland nearly swept all the Big Ten special honors, as Gordon Wild was named Offensive Player of the Year, Alex Crognale snagged top defensive honors, and Cody Niedermeier was tabbed Big Ten Goalkeeper of the Year while Cirovski earned his first Big Ten Coach of the Year honor since Maryland became a member of the conference in 2014. Maryland also posted two NSCAA First Team All-Americans in Wild and Crognale - the first time two Terrapins earned that honor since 2010. Crognale signed a Homegrown contract with Columbus Crew while fellow senior defender Chris Odoi-Atsem was drafted in the first round by D.C. United.Cirovski was instrumental in helping the Terps make a stellar transition to the Big Ten in

2014, leading Maryland to regular season and tournament championships in its inaugural season in the league and its fourth straight conference tournament title a year later. In 2015, Maryland advanced all the way to the quarterfinals, defeating previous national champions Virginia and Notre Dame along the way.

Maryland returned to the College Cup for the second straight season in 2013 after capturing ACC regular season and tournament championships for the second consecutive season. The Terps fell to Notre Dame in the national championship game and Patrick Mullins became the first player at Maryland to win two MAC Hermann Trophies.

Maryland put together one of its finest campaigns in 2012, boasting the top winning percentage and scoring offense in the country. The Terps captured the ACC regular season and tournament titles and advanced to the College Cup before bowing out in penalty kicks in the national semifinals. Patrick Mullins was named the MAC Hermann Trophy Winner and all three seniors - Taylor Kemp, John Stertzer, and London Woodberry - all landed in the MLS through either the MLS SuperDraft or homegrown contracts.

In 2008, the Terps established the `Gold Standard’, capturing the program’s third national title and winning more games (23) than any other squad in program history. The team also set program-bests in shutouts (15) and consecutive wins (16) as well as registering a Ludwig Field-record crowd of 6,500 in Maryland’s bout with then-No. 1 Wake Forest. The 2008 season marked the first time in the Cirovski-era that the Terps won both the NCAA Tournament and the ACC Tournament. To top it off, Cirovski eclipsed long-time head coach Doyle Royal to become Maryland men’s soccer winningest coach in a win against Duke on Sept. 19.

The 2005 championship run did not mark the arrival of the Maryland program, but helped validate its place alongside the nation’s elite. In addition to a fourth-straight College Cup appearance, the Terps won the ACC regular season title and posted a 19-4-2 mark. In addition, Cirovski helped mentor Maryland’s first Hermann Trophy winner in Jason Garey, who left Maryland as the school’s all-time leader in goals (60) and points (140) and was the third pick in the MLS SuperDraft. Cirovski was named the ACC Coach of the Year for the second time in his career, and was the NSCAA National Coach of the Year for the first time in his career as the Terps brought home

their first national title since 1968.Under Cirovski’s guidance, the Terps have brought fans

out to Ludwig Field in record numbers. In 2009, the The Terps ranked second nationally in overall attendance and a then program-record crowd of 6,946 watched Maryland trump No. 2 North Carolina. Cirovski’s efforts to build a winning team that plays an exciting brand of soccer are only matched by his efforts to build Ludwig Field into one of the top soccer venues in the country.

In addition to his leadership on the sidelines, Cirovski is also a leader as the chairman of the men’s soccer NSCAA Division I committee. As chairman, Cirovski was the architect in creating the position of NSCAA Program Director, a major triumph for the sport. This position will be the singular voice of college soccer in dealing with NCAA legislative issues, overseeing College Cups and elevating the significance and status of the sport. He was also vital in brokering the television partnership between Fox Soccer Channel and the NSCAA, guaranteeing a weekly spot for college soccer on television.

Cirovski’s wife, the former Shannon Higgins, played collegiate soccer at North Carolina and entered the National Soccer Hall of Fame in the fall of 2002. The couple has three daughters; Hailey, Karli, and Ellie.

Big Ten Honors The Terps placed three players on the All-Big Ten teams. Senior Amar Sej-dic and junior Donovan Pines earned first-team plaudits while William James Herve was a unanimous selecton to the all-freshman team. Sejdic is now one of three players in Maryland’s short history in the Big Ten to earn first-team hon-ors twice (Chris Odoi-Atsem/Mael Corboz) while Pines, after earned all-fresh-man honors as a freshman and second-team honors as a sophomore is one of just three Terps to be selected to an All-Big Team team in three seasons (Odoi-Atesem/Eryk Williamson).

ACC History Maryland’s first two opponents in the NCAA Tournament came from the ACC, the Terps’ former conference. Maryland is one of the most storied programs in ACC soccer history, with 27 combined regular season and tournament trophies. The Terps are 4-1-2 against ACC opposition since leaving the conference.

Maryland Players in Penalty Kicks Parts of Maryland’s current squad have participated in four matches that have been decided in PK shootouts. vs. Indiana, L, 4-3 (2018 B1G Tournament Semi): Amar Sejdic (Made), Chase Gasper (Made), Mike Heitzmann (Missed), Vinicius Lansade (Missed), Johannes Bergmann (Made). Midseason Recognition Top Drawer Soccer recognized Donovan Pines (30) on its list of the top 100 players in college soccer at the midseason point. William James Herve (29) and Justin Gielen (87) ranked among the top freshmen in college soccer.

Honoring the Past The Maryland men’s soccer program honored the 50th anniversary of its first-ever national championship by welcoming back members of the 1968 title winning squad to Friday night’s match against Michigan State. The team was recognized on the field prior to the Terrapins’ nationally televised match with the Spartans. Maryland and Michigan State shared that 1968 national title after the two teams played to a 2-2 draw and were named co-champions. Maryland’s 1968 season was one of the finest seasons in program history. The Terrapins were the lone undefeated team in college soccer that year, finishing with a 14-0-1 record, and captured their 16th consecutive ACC title. The squad is one of three Maryland teams to finish the entire season unbeaten (1947, 1958).

Big Ten Preseason Honors Senior midfielder Amar Sejdic, redshirt junior goalkeeper Dayne St. Clair and junior defender Donovan Pines were named to the Big Ten Preseason honors list. Sejdic, a 2016 first-team All-Big Ten selection, is Maryland’s top returning assist man with four. Pines was a second-team All-Big Ten selection a season ago after being named to the Big Ten All-Freshman Team in his debut campaign. Both Sejdic and Pines proved their preseason recognition correct as both earned All-Big Ten First Team honors.

Across The Pond Maryland went on a week long tour of England in the spring and went 3-0 against international competition. The Terps opened the trip with a win over the reserves of Welsh Premier League side Connah’s Quay (pronounced “key’) Nomads with goals coming from Paul Bin, Sebastian Elney and DJ Reeves. After a few days in Manchester, in which the Terps attended a Manchester United FA Cup match, the squad traveled to Leicester City to play a combination of the 2016 Premier League Champions U-23 and U-18 teams. Maryland controlled play and won 3-0 in an impressive performance that saw Bin net two more times with Mike Heitzmann providing the last tally. Maryland played one match after the trip moved to London; a contest with the full U-23 team of English League Championship club Queens Park Rangers. The Terps smashed the Hoops, 5-0, with goals coming from Bin, Elney, Amar Sejdic,

and Johannes Bergmann. The Terps defensive effort throughout the trip was solid as the backline of Chase Gasper, Bergmann, Donovan Pines and Ben Di Rosa, backed up by keeper Dayne St. Clair, did not concede over the course of three matches. Defensive midfield ace Andrew Samuels cleaned things up in front of the Terps’ back four throughout the trip.

Preseason Recognition Top Drawer Soccer recognized a few Terps in its preseason content. Amar Sejdic (30) and Donovan Pines (77) rank in the site’s top-100 Division I players. Dayne St. Clair was named one of the top-10 goalkeepers in the country, while Richard Bedats was noted as an impact international signee.

Meet The New Guys! Top Drawer Soccer named Maryland’s incoming recruiting class the 12th best in the nation, continuing the program’s legacy of top rated classes. Frisco native Brayan Padilla (FC Dallas), the 58th ranked player in TDS’ rankings headlines the class with fellow ranked recruit Russell Shealy (102, Atlanta United) and MLS academy product Vinicius Lansade. All three have had success in the US Soccer De-velopment Academy, with Lansade leading NYCFC to a U-19/18 title this year. Four Maryland natives feature in Maryland’s class; Justin Gielen (Baltimore Celtic), Nick Richardson (Baltimore Celtic), Brett St. Martin (Baltimore Celtic) and Craig Eichelberger (Baltimore Armour). The trio from Celtic are proven winners, with St. Martin helping the club win a US Youth Soccer U-19 National Championship prior to Richardson and Gielen leading the outfit to a U-18 crown.

Maryland’s class is completed by a pair of international players; Slovakia native Richard Bedats and France native William James Herve. Bedats has a distinguished youth pedigree, captaining Slovakian youth sides from the U-15 to U-19 level. He chose the Terps over a number of national bluebloods including North Carolina, Indiana and Wake Forest.

Maryland Made Maryland head coach Sasho Cirovski will be assisted this sea-son by two of his former standout players in Scott Buete and Jake Pace. Buete has done nothing but win in his association with Maryland soccer, capturing a combined four conference tournament titles, three conference regular season titles and nine NCAA Tournament appearances in his nine seasons as a player and coach with the program. Buete was a three-year captain for Cirovski and the Terps from 2001-2003 and was an NSCAA First Team All-American in 2003 after snagging third team honors in 2002. He led Maryland to two College Cup appearances and an Atlantic Coast Conference tournament title in 2002. Pace is in his first season as assistant coach after serving as director of soccer operations for the previous four seasons. Between 2012 and 2016 as a player and staff member, Pace played a role in five consecutive conference tournament championship squads (ACC and Big Ten). He finished his career with 13 goals, including a career-high six as a captain his senior year.
