The home of the Yellow Jacket swimming anddiving program is the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center(GTAC), located on the west side of campus as thefoundation of the Campus Recreation Center (CRC).

The facility was the site of all swimming, divingand synchronized swimming competition as well asthe swimming portion of the modern pentathlonduring the Centennial Olympic Games in the sum-mer of 1996.

Along with hosting the '96 Olympics, the GTACplayed host to the 2005 and 2008 Men's andWomen's Atlantic Coast Conference Swimming andDiving Championships, and 2005 NCAA Zone Div-ing Championships.

The Jackets posted a third-place finish duringthe men’s ACC meet, marking the second highestfinish in program history, falling behind the second-place finish in 2001.

The Yellow Jackets served as the host of the2006 Men’s NCAA Swimming and Diving Champi-onships, March 23-25. The GTAC set a modern dayrecord for attendance, bringing in more than 10,000fans to watch the spectacle.

In front of the home crowd, Tech’s Evan Stowerstallied the highest diver finish in school history, tal-lying a seventh-place finish on the platform to gar-ner All-America honors.

The meet also witnessed five NCAA and U.S.Open records fall and three American records godown. Florida’s Ryan Lochte set two American andthree NCAA records en route to being named NCAASwimmer of the Year.

“It was a great opportunity for the city of Atlantato see how fast of a meet that is,” said head coachStu Wilson. “It was great for exposure for GeorgiaTech and was a tremendous way to showcase howfine of a facility we have. It no doubt will help withrecruiting and the more exposure Georgia Tech andour program gets, the more student-athletes willsee how great it is to train in such a state-of-the-art facility.”

The Jackets opened the newly-enclosed GTAC in2003-04, as they hosted NC State on Oct. 25, 2003.Tech went on to host 11 meets in the top-of-the-linefacility during the 2004-05 season, including theACC Championships and NCAA Zone Diving Cham-pionships.

In 2005-06, Tech welcomed 23 teams in theGTAC, before the men’s national championshipmeet.

The GTAA provides the Yellow Jackets with aworld-class venue for aquatic sports and serves asan important element of the physical legacy of theGames, enhancing the activities Georgia Tech can

offer its students for years to come. The 1,900-seat main stadium contains a com-

petition pool and dive pool. The competition pool is 50 meters by 10 lanes,

with two movable bulkheads so that courses canbe set up for 25 yards, 25 meters or 30 meters forwater polo. It also features a movable floor whichcan be set from zero depth to seven feet, eightinches.

The dive pool features one- and three-meterspringboards plus one-, three-, five-, seven-and-ahalf- and 10-meter platforms, as well as a Spargarsystem that sends a mass of bubbles from the bot-tom of the tank to ease entry into the water.

During the Olympic Games, the GTAC also in-cluded a temporary water polo pool with a seatingcapacity of 4,000. It was used for all competitionexcept the finals, which were held in the main pool.

The original $21 million facility was funded en-tirely by the Atlanta Committee for the OlympicGames (ACOG). Construction on the facility began inJuly 1994 and was completed in time to host theVIIth Synchronized Swimming World Cup in August1995. The newly-renovated enclosure of the GTAC ispart of an over $45 million expansion to the CRC.

Other test events held at the facility included theNations Bank Pan Pacific Swimming Championships, the IXth Diving World Cup and the IXth Water PoloWorld Cup.

Georgia Tech continues to reap the benefits ofa world-class aquatic facility for use by the Ram-bling Wreck swimming and diving program as wellas the student body. Tech held its first meet in theaquatic center on Oct. 5, 1995, hosting Emory.

“The Georgia Tech Aquatic Center is a beautifulfacility, which I think is one of the best in the coun-try,” said Wilson. “It gives our athletes an opportu-nity to train in an Olympic pool on a regular basisand state-of-the-art equipment.

“Swimmers have their own lockers, team room, computer lab and entertainment center where theycan watch their swims from previous swim meets orjust relax.

“Our athletes have all the resources needed tobe successful, in and out of the classroom here atGeorgia Tech.”

2009-10 Georgia Tech Swimming & Diving Media Guide

HistoryHistoryEARLY YEARS

Georgia Tech first fielded a swim team in 1918-19, when thefirst tryout was held at the city Y.M.C.A. and about 60 men cameout. According to the Blueprint, the fledgling squad featured“some of the fastest water splashers that the South has everturned out and one that would make any Eastern college hus-tle to beat.” The team was captained by G.R. Fraser, describedas the best swimmer in the South and holder of the Southernrecord in both the 220-yard swim and the 50-yard swim.

Tech’s first swim meet was on the road against the Clem-son Tigers. In addition to Fraser, the first Tech team includedWeiss, Scott, Carson, Evans and Owens, who returned with a 50to 19 victory. Fraser swam the 220 yards in 2:50.00, cutting fourseconds off his own Southern record.

The program enjoyed success against Southern competitionthroughout the 1920s. In 1927, Tech defeated all Southern op-position and made a good showing against two strong east-ern teams. The Jackets broke into prominence by forcing thefamous Brooklyn Y team to the limit, but fell 46 to 16. Twodays later, Yale handed the Jackets the short end of a 46 to 16score.

In 2003-04, the Yellow Jackets gave birth to a brand newrenovated Georgia Tech Aquatic Center. Tech opened the en-closed Olympic pool by hosting NC State on Oct. 25, 2003.

With the home fans cheering them on, the Rambling Wreckswam past the visiting Wolpack, 132-107 (men) and 152-91(women).

EARLY CHAMPIONSThe Yellow Jacket tankmen, despite the lack of an on-cam-

pus facility, won 10-straight unofficial Southern championshipsfrom 1926-35.
