HEAD COACH CHRIS WHALLEY
4
Chris Whalley enters his first year at the helm of the Chowan University men's
soccer team. Whalley stated, “I am excited to begin a new era of Chowan men’s
soccer and am looking forward to the chance to continue to develop and learn un-
der the tutelage of AD Ozzie McFarland. I believe my coaching experiences over
the past 11 years will help me take this program to new heights and repay the faith
shown to me by the Chowan University athletic department and President White.”
McFarland stated, “Chris’ coaching success gives us an opportunity to make major
strides in our soccer program. He is the type of coach who will fit well with the
coaches and athletic personnel in our department. He will demonstrate the compe-
tence and work ethic that is needed and that of which will be our standard. We are
extremely fortunate to have him on our staff.”
Prior to Chowan, Whalley served as an assistant coach at Appalachian State Univer-
sity for two seasons. He assisted with all facets of the men’s soccer program in-
cluding booster and alumni relations while guiding the Mountaineers to the SoCon
quarter and semifinals in 2012. Whalley noted, “I am truly honored to accept the
position as the new head men’s soccer coach at Chowan University but would like
to thank Appalachian State University for all of their support.”
Before his stint at Appalachian State, Whalley developed training plans and worked
with elite level soccer players in Wisconsin as head coach of the FC Milwaukee Na-
tionals of the US Development Academy. Whalley also spent three seasons as head
coach at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee where he doubled the squad’s win
total from the previous regime and led the team to an upset of nationally ranked
Northern Illinois in 2011, marking the first win over a ranked team since 2006. He
had three student-athletes go on to receive professional contracts while the team
cumulative grade point average improved to over 3.0.
Before coaching at Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Whalley spent the 2005-2010 seasons at
Lees-McRae College. He turned a struggling men’s soccer team into a regionally
and nationally recognized program. Whalley accumulated a 77-22-10 career record
at Lees-McRae and guided the Bobcats to a #1 National Ranking in 2009 and NCAA
National Runner-Up finish that same season. Whalley guided Lees McRae to regu-
lar season Conference Carolinas titles in 2007, 2008 and 2009 and Conference
Carolinas tournament championships in 2007 and 2008. His winning percentage
of .78 is the best in Lees-McRae soccer history. Whalley remains ranked 5th among
NCAA Division II college coaches and 23rd among all college coaches in career win-
ning percentage. He coached 14 All-Americans and 32 All-Region players during his
tenure while earning NSCAA Regional Coach of the Year accolades in 2007 and
Conference Carolinas Coach of the Year honors in 2007 and 2009.
In addition to his post with the Bobcats, Whalley served as the head coach of the
West Virginia Chaos in the USL Premier Development League and also served as
selection chairperson for Division II MLS in 2009. He played collegiately at Mercy-
hurst College where he helped lead the Lakers to the NCAA Division II tourna-
ment and an NCAA Final Four appearance in 2002. He was part of two GLIAC
championships in 2001 and 2002 and was named First Team All-GLIAC in those
same seasons. He also played professionally for the Reading Rage and United Soc-
cer League in 2003-2004.
Whalley takes the reins of a Hawks’ program that finished 1-14 in 2013. He has a
wife, Alexis, and lives in Murfreesboro.

ASSISTANT COACH LEE WILLIAMS
Lee Williams enters his first season as assistant coach of the men’s soccer team at Chowan. Prior to joining the Hawks’ soccer program, Williams served as an assistant at UNC Wilmington where he helped the Seahawks finish in second place in the Colonial Athletic Association. The Seahawks finished their season with a 9-6-2 record while also earning nonconference wins over UNC Chapel Hill, Duke and Ohio State. Williams competed as a student-athlete at Appalachian State University. He started all 64 games in his ca-reer and played every minute of each game for the Mountaineers. Williams, a team captain, led the squad to three Southern Conference Team of the Year awards and earned various individual awards including: All-American status, All-Tournament Team recognition twice, and Defensive Most Valuable Player at the Coastal Carolina/Adidas Tournament in 2011. He was also shortlisted for the Herman Trophy, college soccer’s most prestigious individual award. During his time at Appalachian State, Williams worked with High Country Soccer as a volunteer coach. After graduating with a degree in Science in Health Promotion at Appalachian State, Williams pursued profes-sional soccer through Stockport County where he played against some of England’s top clubs for two years. While in England, Williams achieved an FA Level II coaching badge and a BTEC National Certificate in Sporting Excellence. Williams gained additional coaching experience with Cape Fear Soccer Academy in Wilmington, NC and served as an assistant coach for the men’s soccer team at Lees-McRae in the spring of 2013. The Liverpool, England native currently resides in Murfreesboro.

Chowan University is a four-year co-education intuition. It is the second oldest of North Carolina's seven
Baptist Colleges. Chowan opened in 1848 as a four year college for women, Chowan Baptist Female institute. It was renamed Chowan College in 1910, admitted male students in 1931, and established itself as one of the leading junior colleges in the South in 1937. In 1992 the college returned to four year status. In April of 2006 Chowan President, Dr. M. Christopher White announced the changing of the institutions name from Chowan College to Chowan University. The University fulfills its mission with a careful blend of both liberal arts and professional courses. Recognizing that such a blend of knowledge and experience is particularly suited to the needs of contemporary society. Chowan takes as priority the need to connect general education with specialized education, theoretical learning with practical learning, and intellectual skills with vocational skills. Set amid 300 acres of woodlands embracing beautiful Lake Vann, Chowan’s main entrance leads gracefully around a college green to an antebellum mansion known as the McDowell Columns Building. Sixteen major buildings of contemporary design provide air-conditioned residence, academic and recreational facilities. The small-town university campus attracts students from at least twenty seven states and several countries each year. The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools fully accredits Chowan University to offer the bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree in the field of education..

Chowan University stands in the old
Albemarle region of North Carolina
between the Roanoke and Chowan Rivers
in the northeast corner of the state. The
Murfreesboro area was first settled during
the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries,
when the principal inhabitants were
several Indian Tribes such as the
Chowanokes. Today, the stately old
homes seem to whisper of the storied
colonial and antebellum days.
Murfreesboro is located approximately 60
miles from Norfolk, Virginia and 120 miles
from Raleigh, North Carolina.
Murfreesboro is the location of the
boyhood home of Dr. Walter Reed,
discoverer of the cure for yellow fever,
and home to Richard Jordan Gatling, the
inventor of the Gatling Gun. Tours and
special events are offered throughout the
year by local groups.
