Our approach to workplace health

Employers have a great opportunity to unlock a healthier, happier, higher performing workforce, by empowering their people to better manage their wellbeing, at work and beyond.

To help develop a workplace health program, Bupa have created a work health model as a framework for a holistic plan. It is drawn from a philosophy that any comprehensive wellbeing program should include each quadrant of the model; physical health, personal influences, psychological health and environmental influences.

Our solutions

We offer a range of seminars, workshops, online learning modules and resource materials that can be tailored to suit your organisation.

We pride ourselves on the positive feedback we receive from our sessions’ interactive format, particularly the focus on prompting group discussion and actively working through case studies. All of our workshops and seminars are run by expert facilitators who are experienced in presenting to a variety of professional audiences, and related resources are provided after every session. All content is evidence-based and grounded in principles of positive psychology, as well as clinically valid and legally compliant with current state and federal OH&S legislation.

An individual’s mental health and wellbeing can be influenced by cultural factors such as social connections and personal behaviours such as stress management.

Targeting mental health and wellbeing

Our mental health and wellbeing services are categorised within the two quadrants; Healthier minds and Healthier cultures.

Healthier minds focusses on the mental health and wellbeing of the individual, so the health factors we look to influence are related to stress management, personal resilience and healthy behaviours.

Healthier cultures focus on the dynamics of the workplace so we target those who can influence this; managers and leaders as well as things the organisation can change through teams and relationship building.

The steps for choosing the right mental health and wellbeing services

1Identify your target group. Do you need to change individual behaviours or those of the organisation?

For individuals, review the solutions under Healthier minds, for the organisation, review solutions for Healthier cultures.

Narrow down what you’d like to achieve.

Each health factor can be further divided into specific desired outcomes. Check the list on the next page for a key of outcomes.

2

Decide what level of intervention you require in your organisation:

• Introductory – assists with raising awareness by promoting simple preventative health messages and helpful strategies.

• Intermediate – develops a broader understanding of a health factor or topic, helps shift strategies into actions to initiate positive change, and supports individuals’ skill development.

• Targeted support – provides in-depth training for key personnel in addressing specific issues, manages them with confidence, and creates frameworks to help implement long-term protective measures within a workplace.

Online health assessment

The online health assessment surveys aspects of an individual’s current health status so they can receive a snapshot of some of their health risks and tips to improve their lifestyle. These might include eating better, reducing blood pressure, and moving more. They can then discuss it with their general practitioner who can compare their results with Australian population health guidelines and help them set realistic, well-planned health goals. Participants are encouraged to log in again regularly over the duration of the campaign to repeatedly take the survey and compare their results over time.

You will receive a clear indication of your organisation’s current health status overall, relative to Bupa benchmark data. These insights can assist with developing a workplace health plan specifically targeted to your company’s health risks and needs. The assessment is a cost effective way to reach large, geographically challenged workforces, and a tool that can assist with evaluating your program on an annual basis.
